Originally conceived for the British market, where Roxy Music and its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry were much more popular than in the States, The Platinum Collection gathers every band and Ferry single, along with some popular album tracks, on three chronologically arranged discs. As an overview of both acts' extensive and connected careers, from 1973 through Ferry's 2002 Frantic album, this is a far more comprehensive overview than the many single compilations already released. Initially, there was a substantial musical dissimilarity between lead vocalist Ferry's solo work, much of it less artsy and aggressive than early Roxy songs such as "Do the Strand" and "Virginia Plain." Eventually, by the late 70s the two became less distinct. The primary difference being Ferry's tendency to radically rearrange musty pop, folk, and R&B covers between his more sensually lush, dance oriented music. Roxy Music disbanded in 1983 leaving Ferry, whose solo work comprises almost half of this package and the entire third disc, to carry the torch. Short but pertinent notes about each song, along with small reproductions of the original British picture sleeves, provide some historical background. And although all three CDs include 15 tracks, there is plenty of unused room on each for more music. Regardless, this is an essential addition to any British rock fan's collection. The compilation is nearly as classy and sophisticated as the stylish band, and its suave singer, deserves. -- Hal Horowitz

Very good introduction to Bryan Ferry. However, it is missing "Everytime You Go Away".

5 out of 5 stars A Superb and Classic Collection of Romantic Rock Anthems.......2006-07-20

I was a fan of Roxy Music since I first heard Avalon and More Than This. They have always been a band that people can relate to. Roxy Music is a Progressive Rock band that wore drag, with Brian Eno beginning in this Band as its Keyboardist, and the fact that with Sax and great Rock and Roll guitar as well as drum and bass, that makes Roxy Music into a true anthem band of British Rock fron the 1970s.
Bryan Ferry is a great Crooner, and he even in drag is a Glam Rock Sinatra, when David Bowie has no one ever who can stand at his level from before or after, as a performer, as they BROKE THE MOLD when he was created as a performer. Bryan and Roxy Music are definatly Bowie types in performing, with the use of Keyboards and Moorg Synth sounds as well as Sax and Rock Guitar, giving them such a classic style of the time that could rival Bowie, but of course no one could top Bowie.
My favorate songs from the time from 1972 to 1975 are Street Life and Pajamarama as well as Love is The Drug plus Virginia Plain and Both Ends Burning from Roxy itself as a Band, when Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and The In Crowd by Bryan solo are amazing, but his version of Dylan's Hard Rains Gonna Fall is the top favorate for me from that period for Bryan, when my least favorate from that era in anything is Do The Strand. Lets Stick Together was released in 1975, and I totally recomend the whole album and not just the selections on this Collection. In dealing with 1975 to 1985 I recomend Dance Away and Angel Eyes as well as Sign of the Times from Bryan's Bride Stripped Bare album. Avalon is a true classic but Flesh + Blood has songs that are not too clamorous for me, so the songs from that album on the Collection exept Same old Sceene I do not recomend. Avalon and Boys and Girls are classics in full status, while Is Your Love Strong Enough is a song that should have been on Boys and Girls reissued or Bete Noire which was as amazing.
In closing this is a true classic in a Collection.

I've always liked Bryan Ferret. As far as a rock singer goes, he has great hair. But this compilation is just like all the rest only it has more stuff on it. What really irks me though is the best stuff was left off. Songs like "Bitters End" where Andy McBride's saxophone sounds like a fart on an empty subway platform. Now that's rock & roll. This I believe. And where is "Take me To The River (and chuck me in)"? All in all, a wonderful cd set, but I should have bought something else with the money, like the new Brian Ferret compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Compilation.......2004-12-30

I love the early Roxy Stuff, and the Later Bryan Ferry Stuff. It hardly seems like the same perosn when you hear the full progression of Ferry from Glam rockin Eno-Ite to the mellow crooner he has become. I will say he is still cool and fun to listen to in any era of his music. The only oddity is the glaring ommision of "Out of the Blue" and "In Every Dream Home a Heartache". Oh well, I have those in other form as well. It's a great Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music starter kit.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Clean Sound.......2007-02-01

It's Lou Reed's best tunes, remastered and sounding good. A pretty good anthology from the New York Master.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Collection.......2005-05-25

I like this alot. A lot of classics and some lesser known stuff. Some live, some studio. A good mix. Someone else mentioned they preferred the studio Velvet version of "Heroin" and I have to agree. At least maybe have the live and the studio version both included. The insert write up was nice and pretty informative as well. Check this out if you are a Lou Reed or Velvet Underground fan or want a good starting point to see if you will like his/their other stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of VU and solo cuts, how can it not be anything less.........2005-05-03

Considering how far across the spectrum Lou has gone over a 40 year period, the songs manage to interweave nicely, and is not a conventional "greatest hits" by any stretch to be called "Ultimate" or "Essential". But it's typical of Reed to confuse, confound, frustrate, and upset critics and fans...

He wrote these songs and sequenced them in order to a way that he was satisfied with listening to as an album in its own right versus a chronological "hits" package, pulled the masters and gave a short commentary of each song in the booklet (including revealing that the epic "Street Hassle" cut features an uncredited Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith on part of the song).

He chose to go with the edited "Sweet Jane" versus the found extended version or the 70s radio classic from "Rock and Roll Animal". The VU songs at times go with the original recordings, and others (I'll Be Your Mirror, White Light White Heat and Heroin) go with his solo versions in concert.

In the notes he felt a lot of the songs took years to catch on, and gave "Perfect Day" as an example, even though he prefers "Hangin' Around" as a favorite. He includes cuts from "Live In Italy" and "Take No Prisoners", although leaves hits like "I Love You Suzanne" off.

For an intro it's essential. But most people would be better off with the original CDs these came off of.

4 out of 5 stars A solid best-of.......2005-01-20

Despite the mastering Lou gave to some of those Velvet Underground tracks ( is it just me or did he put his vocals up higher into the mix ), I find this a rather solid best-of collection. It's a rather neat and tidy collection for those willing to buy this collection. Frankly I see this collection is better than the recent NYC Man with the added crap remix of Sattelite of Love which is here in it's original format ( and best ). I say this is better because I think you get a better feel for all the tracks and you get a more rounded idea of the personality that was put into the records. It's worth a try to see the many different levels/facets of Lou Reed's work on two compact discs. As the man himself says " try it."

4 out of 5 stars A collection by the man himself!.......2004-08-29

I have heard many of his albums including compilations. It is surprising some of the songs he chose but the collection works out well. I am glad this collection is up to date. I like "Magic and Loss", "ecstacy" and many velvet's classics. He takes pride in the sound quality in his music to improve the clarity of his songs. All in all a great overview of his work.

4 out of 5 stars lady has a distinctive voice..........2007-07-01

I'm not sure I get what her songs are always about...not that it matters, because
I simply enjoy hearing the voice. No one out there sounds like Martha Davis...and
that's good enough for me.

Did I say I like the woman's delivery and phrasing?

5 out of 5 stars If you love "Only The Lonely" you have to buy this CD!.......2007-01-27

I bought "Essential Collection" by the Motels because I wanted the song "Only The Lonely." I think that's one of my 10 favorite songs of all time. It turns out the whole CD is awesome! There's a certain "film noir" atmosphere to many of these songs. This is smart stuff! So feed your brain and buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Nobody can do it quite like The Motels........2005-11-03

I was actually quite thrilled to see that The Motels had come out with an Essential Collection cd. They were one of the best bands to come out of the 80s, yet still they were SO underrated. Sad to say, but I had even forgotten about them until 2 years ago when VH1 did a "Where are they now?" on different bands. But then it struck me...MARTHA DAVIS!!! (And the Motels of course.)

"Only The Lonely"...which is my personal favorite and may be one of the most remembered..was absolutely one of the best songs straight out of the 80s. "It's like I told you..Only the lonely can play".

"Suddenly Last Summer"....as another user added, this was also a great song to come out of the 80s..I'd say it was the 2nd biggest hit of the band.

Other songs you might be vaguely familiar with.. "Shame" and "Remember the Nights". If you were EVER fan of the Motels, pick up this CD and get interested again! And if you aren't familiar with the band but you like other bands such as Quarterflash, Blondie, Berlin or Missing Persons..then check this out. You won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Very good compilation of an underrated band.......2005-05-15

I hadn't heard a Motels song in like 15 years until 'Only the Lonely' played last week on XM Radio. I was instantly reminded of just how much I enjoyed listening to the band back in the 80's.

Unable to locate the 'No Vacancy' CD (it's apparently out-of-print), I purchased this compilation instead. It is very, very good - not great as I really prefer their later material over the earlier stuff.

Few vocalists can belt 'em out with the raw energy of Martha Davis - she's terrific, as is the rest of the band.

The music of the Motels has aged very well, and in a business overloaded with hype and hysteria, I can honestly say that this group is (for the most part) underrated. 'Suddenly Last Summer' is one of the best ballads to come out of the 80's, period.

Recommended, and well worth the price of admission.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Collection But Still Missing Hot 100 Hits!.......2005-05-04

Yet another compilation from The Motels. EMI/Capitol does it again -- that is, milking cash out of them as much as they can! Instead of giving their albums a proper update and remaster treatment (5.1 audio on DualDisc perhaps?), Capitol throws out yet another collection! Yet they still didn't get it right!

Notable Billboard Hot 100 entries are still missing!:
"Forever Mine" (#60 - 1982). Only it's b-side, "So L.A.", makes an appearance.
"Shock (7" Remix)" (#84 - 1985). Would have been nice to have this in remastered form on CD finally. Why it was left off again I'll never know.

Furthermore, including Martha Davis' lone charting solo single, "Don't Tell Me The Time" (#80 in 1987), could have been a possibility as well. Keep in mind that much of the Motels' back catalogue remains out of print, so these lost charting singles remain on those hard-to-find albums.

On the positive side, all tracks have been digitally remastered very nicely! The sound is breathtaking! That's the only real advantage of this collection and reason enough to buy it. However, instead of getting perhaps an even fresher remastering for 2005, the tracks appearing on the 2002 release, 'Classic Masters,' seem to have been placed directly on this collection with the same mastering, as evident by the 2002 publishing credits. I could be wrong, however, since Evren Goknar gets the mastering credit here instead of Robert Vosgien (on 'Classic Masters'). Regardless, the Motels have never sounded so good!

Unlike the 'Classic Masters' collection, the single versions of both "Shame" and "Total Control" are included. The latter track is nice having in it's edited form for a change even if I don't like how it was edited. It does get chopped quite a bit, removing many key parts of the track and going from 5:54 on 'Classic Masters' to 3:52 here.

I think the main problem with this so-called 'Essential Collection' is the failure to fill the disc with 79 minutes of music. There's easily enough room for at least another 6 tracks here. The disc only clocks in at just over 52 minutes of playing time! That leaves another 27 minutes of space! Capitol could have easily squeezed in those missing chart entries in addition to other radio/single highlights and b-sides. Even the gorgeous "Some Things Never Change" would have been a welcomed addition.

I suppose the label was trying to present something different to the 1990, solid yet flawed, 19-track 'No Vacancy - The Best Of The Motels' release. But this compilation simply comes across as inferior with the skimpy tracklisting and song choice. Perhaps it would have been best to have just reissued the now out-of-print 1990 collection with a slightly altered tracklisting -- including the Billboard Hot 100 entries "Forever Mine" and "Shock (7" Remix)" -- with a fresh 2005 remastering.

Overall, 5 stars for the remastering and 1 star for yet another poor attempt at compiling Motels' classics on disc again. Maybe next time Capitol will offer us all those charting singles on one disc?

Is there a finer green-blooded punk band in all of Boston than the Dropkick Murphys? The Singles Collection 1996-1997 answers the question with a rousing "Oy!". Like all good punk outfits, the Dropkick Murphys recorded several 7-inch records and toured diligently; most DM fans will have most of these tracks, but will probably want crunchy, angry anthems such as "Fightstarter Karaoke" and "Regular Guy" on compact disc. In addition to this material are 10 live numbers from the Do or Die record release show. The sonic document perfectly captures the Murphys' harsh sizzle and, combined with the rest of the disc, distracts from the fact that The Singles Collection contains three--count 'em, three--Clash covers! At least their allegiances are clear. --Jason Josephes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for the true fan.......2007-02-07

This CD has some favorite tracks you've heard before, and some tracks that only appeared on singles. The versions of songs from Do or Die aren't as good as the originals from Do or Die, but some of the new songs (Front Seat, Guns of Brixton) are great additions to any fan's catalog. Also, the live songs are pretty decent. Pick this album up only if you have their other CDs.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a DK fan who heard "Worker's Song".......2006-03-08

I was REALLY psyched when I heard "Workers Song". I had never heard Dropkick Murphys before, but I like punk, and especially meaningful punk, a la Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Sex Pistols, Clash, Flipper, DOA, and others. I should have listened to the reviews that mentioned it was all three chords and lots of noise.

I don't think the Dropkick Murphys are the problem - they seem to be a GREAT group. I readily identify with the "Irish Pride" thing, even though I'm only a little Irish (probably about 1/8 or so), because of the persecution they've suffered at the hands of the English (one of my favorite songs of all time is John & Yoko's "Luck of the Irish"). Irish suffrage and Irish pride are not empty phrases to me, and for that reason alone, I like the music and the points that DM raises in some of its songs.

Maybe I should have just settled for the CD with the song I liked and gone from there. I listened to a couple of other songs on "Blackout" and I will be buying that CD. So, while I can't give the above CD more than 2 stars, I still give the Dropkick Murphys group 5 stars.

I love Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, adn I figured, to tide me over until the Sweet Escape, I'd get one of ND's older CDs since I have all of them Tragic Kingdom and on. It was between their debut and this. since Beacon Street got rave reviews, i bought it over the self-titled one.. When i popped it into my stereo, it was only alright. Some tracks were ok, but some made me feel nauseated and I could only listen to it for the first 5 seconds. *cough* blue in the face *cough* The only songs that I liked were By The Way and Doghouse was ok. I lovvveee by the way though. Overall its worth two stars for me. [I love the inside of the disc all the pics are so cool. I also like the disc with all the little band members!]

5 out of 5 stars No Doubt back when they were ska!.......2006-03-30

I'm having a hard time deciding if I like this one more than No Doubt's self-titled album. They are both excellent albums and everyone should listen to them at least once. Here's a song by song:

1.Open the Gate: Love this track. Gets really catchy near the end. 9/10
2.Blue In the Face: This song is really annoying to me; it's too slow and Gwen's buzzy bee noises are annoying. 4/10
3.Total Hate 95: No Doubt and Sublime team up to bring us this incredibly catchy and fun jam. One of my favorites from this album. 10/10
4.Stricken: Gwen's singing is so cute and catchy on this one. I love it. 9/10
5.Greener Pastures: I didn't care for this one at first, but now I like it :) 8/10
6.By the Way: This one is somewhat slow and is carried by Gwen's singing. 7/10
7.Snakes: This one's ok, not particularly catchy but the guitars on this one are great. 8/10
8.That's Just Me: I love this one. 10/10
9.Squeal: Another really fast and catchy song. I like the horns on this one. 10/10
10.Doghouse: A great finisher. I love it. 10/10

I highly recommend this album if you (1) are interested in hearing what No Doubt sounded like before Tragic Kingdom (2) you really like Sublime (3) you are just interested in high-quality albums that are generally avoided by the mass media. If you really like this one, be sure to check out the self-titled one.

5 out of 5 stars Beacon Street Collection.......2005-11-28

Easily one of No Doubt's finest, the Beacon Street Collection stars amazing frontwoman Gwen Stefani in the band's early, raw, ska sound. A must-have for hardcore ND fans!

3 out of 5 stars John Foxx > Midge Ure.......2007-06-03

To the reviewer who said:

"And it is true that after John Foxx left Ultravox seemed to pull together becoming a tighter unit then before. This new Ultravox breathed life back into music and created, while not excitement, music to make you think."

I'm sorry but you don't know a lot about music or Ultravox. They definitely got along better with Midge but the first 3 Ulatravox albums with Foxx are pure genius while the music made by this later incarnation, while certainly fun and catchy as h-ll, is complete fluff by comparison. "Breathes life back into music?" The Foxx incarnation was incredibly influential, they basically invented new wave along with a few other key artists. Who exactly did Midge Ure influence? "This new Ultravox...created, while not excitement, music to make you think". Huh? Exactly the opposite. Here's the deal, Ultravox with Foxx is to Ultravox with Midge as Genesis with Peter Gabriel is to Genesis with Phil Collins. Perfect analogy.

Don't get me wrong, when I was a kid the Midge version of Ultravox was my favorite band, I wore this tape(!) out. But then I got a little older, discovered the original version of the band, and as decades go by that stuff just keeps getting better and better. This is especially true now with what's going on in alternative rock, seems like everyone is into the late 70s and the original Ultravox music actually sounds much more "current" than this later stuff. So do yourselves a favor and go check out the first 3 albums. You could get "ULTRAVOX! The Island Years" as a starter but for fans of the Midge incarnation I might recommend working backwards from "Systems Of Romance", the masterpiece they released before Foxx left and Midge joined. "HA! HA! HA!" is my favorite of the original 3 albums but that and the self-titled debut might be a bit jarring initially.

P.S. There's really no need to compare them but as long as you do I have to say that you seriously underrate Depeche Mode. I'm not counting the Vince Clarke era or the subsequent years when Martin Gore was still finding his way. Starting with "Some Great Reward" Gore wrote many brilliant songs, deceptively complex and original (if not always so lyrically). The synth arrangements (mostly by Wilder) were also simply amazing. If you think anything in the entire Midge Ure canon approaches the genius of Violator, in terms of composition, arrangement, and production...then I don't know what to tell you.

4 out of 5 stars Unltravox best of.......2007-03-09

Had longed for this album ever since losing my cassette version way back when it was originally released.
Ultravox certainly emulate the sound of the 80's - big synthesiser choruses and drum machines. Midge Ure's melodies are strong and catchy. "Vienna" is a classic stand-out.

4 out of 5 stars Can't we all just get along?.......2007-01-08

My take? Ultravox were synthpop all right, and closer to Alphaville than to Roxy Music, though there's plenty of Ferryesque goodness here to be sure. This is merely to say that I don't see how anyone looking for synthy eighties fun could possibly feel let down by this compilation, even as those who preferred the less bleepy "new romantic" style or even the arena-rock scene should find much to like as well.

I never completely figured out what the big deal was about "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes," "Reap the Wild Wind," or even "Vienna," but many people love them, and they're all here. My personal favorites are "Love's Great Adventure" (which may be rivaled only by AV's "Universal Daddy" for practically unpardonable giddy exuberance), the gorgeous ballad "Lament" on the other end of the spectrum, the anthemic "Hymn," the bouncily paranoid "Sleepwalk," and "Visions in Blue" (which changes gears from its almost gothic, dirgelike first half to its dancy second half by means of a peculiar but singularly brilliant modulation that neither you nor I would have thought of, because let's face it, we're just not that clever).

Final note in response to the reviewer who criticized the omission of "If I Was": that's a Midge solo track, so it doesn't belong here. For that one you need "If I Was: The Very Best of Midge Ure & Ultravox," which is a strong compilation in its own right, though I'm still partial to this one by a slim margin.

5 out of 5 stars underated.......2005-10-30

I think these guys make some of the coolest synth music around. They are not talked about alot. I love every song on this album. Holy cow vienna rules. The new synth fans need to check out some of the old guys who started this type of music.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Synth Rock .......2005-07-05

Midge Ure always steals the show with his amazing, almost tenor voice. But he`s a tremendous guitar player too, he was tour guitarist with heavy metal legends Thin Lizzy and that should be taken seriously. His arrival to Ultravox brought charm elegance and fresh ideas to a band that seemed to be a bit tired from the John Foxx era. This collection of songs must still sound fresh, because i`ve heard recently dance covers of " Dancing with tears in my eyes" and " Hymn" in the radio. They sounded great because they`re classics, but without Midge`s voice it ain`t the same.Ultravox were drum programming pioneers and on many tracks i even hear effects charged drums(flanger).Billy Currie adds nice synth and violin lines stamping a classic touch to the band in tracks like the popular " Vienna".Some of the songs haven`t aged well because the synth lines sound outdated but if you can forgive this this cd is fully enjoyable as any of U2`s 80`s recordings.Iwonder what could have happen if Ultravox had released something in the nineties. They could have been huge.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch listening.......2006-10-28

Prior to this year I couldn't have named one song by Mink Deville. I happened to pick up a punk compilation one day which had "Spanish Stroll" as one of the tracks. Then I was hooked. The group was early on identified with the punk movement because of their performances at various punk venues. But Mink Deville has no ties to the Ramones or the Velvet Underground. This is essential rock n' roll and smooth ballads. Willie Deville's vocals and the instrumentation introduce a bluesy Spanish flavor with even an occasional accordion thrown in the mix.

I was so impressed with this disk that I went out and bought the two CD set "Willie Deville In Berlin" which I would also highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Sin of omission.......2005-05-25

A valiant try at a worthy "best of" collection. With 22 tracks, there's no excuse for omitting "Heaven Stood Still." But any effort to get these other 22 great songs into people's ears is an effort worth commending. If you don't know Willie DeVille, begin with this one, then quickly buy the recent re-issue of Le Chat Bleu.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Soul Singer.......2003-01-08

This is an outstanding collection of songs ranging from gritty rockers to lovely ballads by a terrific singer. Fans of (early) Springsteen and Southside Johnny will love this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need from the milkmen.......2005-11-20

When the Dead Milkmen first released this album i thought that it wasn't going to capture all of the work they've done over their illustrious career. I was wrong, being a huge DM fan for a long time i knew what their best songs were and what should be on this album. I saw the track listing online a while ago and said, "wow, this is all their best songs on one cd, it looks like someone finnaly made a great greatest hits album!" and it's true, if you wanna get into the DM, get this one.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so much cooler than you.......2005-08-09

Dead Milkmen were my "I'm cooler than you because I like this band" group I chose in high school. The only song I had ever heard by the band was "punk rock girl", but I said your typical hard core fan stuff like how much I liked their earlier stuff and compared them to other bands like Frankie's Weiner that no one else had heard of. Did you have to know what you were talking about? NO, of course not. It's all about image. I formed several bands in high school that never played a show. I would put up flyers all around the school and cancel the shows the day they were supposed to go off. I would tell people the club didn't meet fire code. Girls would ask if they could sleep with me to cheer me up. There was a six month period where I fronted nine fake bands that never picked up an instrument, but I had a rock star following. That is why I'm where I am and you are where you are.

5 out of 5 stars coolest cd ever.......2005-06-20

This is a great cd by the Dead Milkmen. it has a great variety of music- compare "tiny town" to "instant club hit". It starts off pretty straightforward and gets really weird after the 8th or 9th song but it's still a great album that I can listen to all day and be amused every time.
Not only does it have great music, it's really funny. get it today. best songs- bitchin camaro, the thing that only eats hippies.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental 5 star album.......2002-03-19

I was a Milkmen fan since Big Lizard came out...blah, blah, blah (but, its true). Anyways, I picked this CD up as a quick fix for my collection as my few remaining Milkmen albums typically are on tape. Sadly, most of these tapes were also either played to death by myself or stolen/farmed out to (former)friends. This CD covers most of the highlights of their career with the exception of "those 2 albums" mentioned in the other reviews.

The milkmen are wonderfully snotty and gleefully offensive and very funny in a smarter than it first sounds sort of way. Its pointless to figure out if they are thumbing their milky noses at the subjects of their songs or the (sometimes stilted) conventions of punk music itself; it is often both and that is a good and "nutritionally" healthy thing. There were a few songs that I missed not hearing on this album such as "Gorilla Girl," "Brat in the Frat," and "Beige Sunshine" just to name a few and this almost forced me to end the streak of perfect reviews. I just can't do it.

If you've never heard the Milkmen, prepare yourself for a musical awakening. ONCE PROPERLY AWAKENED, go out and buy Big Lizard in my Back Yard, Beezlebubba (my personal favorite), and Metaphysical Graffitti; these three albums flesh out most of the Milkmen's career as well as provide the majority of the tracks on this CD.

A final warning if you buy this CD: keep it under close eye when your "friends" come to visit, you may end up losing both.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2000-10-13

If you are interested in the Milkmen, but have no idea where to begin, this is the album for you. It includes songs from many of their albums, allowing the listener a taste of each development in the band's style. There is a notable era missing from this collection, that of the infamous out-of-print albums (infamous not because they are poor quality, but because the alternate label those particular albums were on quit making more copies AND they refused to relinquish the rights to the songs... what kind of nonsense is that??). Anyway, this collection will help a listener decide which albums to seek according to his or her taste. So buy it! And if you get hooked and buy them all, pass this one on. Spread it around.

The real reason for the Misfits' prolonged life-after-death is that underneath the three-chord bluster, campy imagery, and pancake makeup there are some great, catchy, pop-hook-driven tunes. Not to mention that no one can sing "whoaah-whoaaah-whoooooaaah!" like the Elvis-impersonating, golden-throated superboy Danzig. But even the most die-hard Misfits freak must surely tire of listening to version after version--7-inch take, live recording, previously unreleased demo--of two-minute punk songs like "We Are 138," "Rat Fink," "Halloween," and "Braineaters" off the bazillion bootlegs and dozen-plus authorized releases from this short-lived act. Collection II does compile some of the Misfits' most collectible vinyl artifacts, like the groovy "Cough/Cool" single. But it's recommended for fans only, who probably already own more than one copy. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I prefer Collection II.......2007-05-12

It seems most 'Fiends' prefer The Misfits Collection I better. I love it too, but I find myself listening to Collection II far more often. Now I have nothing against raw sounds and bad production, my own band has plenty of that, and I admit that the raw, unpolished sound is a large part of the Misfits charm, however, a little production can go a long way.

Collection II has some of my favorite Misfits songs and the entire album sounds better overall than Collection I. 'We are 138', 'Nike a go go', 'Queen Wasp', 'Last Caress', Halloween 1 and 2', and 'Hatebredders' are in my opinion essential songs for a Fiend to have and I believe the best versions of these songs are found right here.

For new Misfits fans and potential Fiends, I highly recommend Collections I and II to start you off. Some will like Collection I better, some will prefer II. I say as long as people are still listening to the Misfits it's a good thing and we can all celebrate one of the most unique, mysterious, and original rock bands of all time. Cheers to all you Fiends!

5 out of 5 stars Collection II.......2007-05-08

Misfits-Collection II *****

While not quite as good as the original collection, this, collection II is still a great way to get to know The Misfits without having to go out an buy all of the classic albums that feature the classic line up with the great Glen Danzig. Once again, much like the original collection this is a great way to introduce yourself to the band or even just a great addition to a die hards collection.

No this is no where are good as the original collection but this does have everything else that was left off. Collection II does contain some classic Misfits songs like the lead of track 'We Are 138.' This song is easily one of the best that the band ever recorded. 'Attitude' is another classic and easily in the bands top ten songs of all time. 'Last Caress' just might be the bands greatest song of all time if not just behind 'Bullet' and 'Die, Die My Darling.' The original version of 'Halloween' is another contender for the bands best song, it is easily the most important and the most influential. Cliff Burton decided he wanted to play bass because of this song. This is also the reason why AFI formed was because this song made Davey Havok want to start a band. I know most punk fans are not real big on AFI but all there albums before The Art Of Drowing are straight up punk and Hardcore punk. They are a great band. 'Horror Hotel is another classic, while not as famous as the others it is without a doubt one of their classics. 'Demonomania' is short but oh so sweet. 'Devils Whorehous' is the song that most people heard the first time they were introduced to The Misfits, and a real cult classic.

Collection one might have the majority of the bands classic songs it really would not be complete without Collection II. This contains it all that was left off one. For the casual fan, diehards and newer fans of The Misfits this and the original collection, which is simply titled Misfits, are great ways to discover the band....while they were good anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Enter Collection II.......2006-07-27

While not as good as Collection I, Collection II is deffidently a good buy. This collection, just like Collection I, contains songs that aren't avaliable on the studio albums, such as, Cough/Cool, Children In Heat, Rat Fink, Halloween II, Horror Hotel, and Mephisto Waltz(which was an unused Samhain song that somehow ended up on this collection). This album also contains alternate versions of Hatebreeders and Braineaters. I find these versions to be better than the originals on Walk Among Us.
This collection contains some damn good Misfits songs, like We Are 138, Attitude, Cough/Cool, my personal favorite Children In Heat, Hatebreeders, Braineaters, Halloween, We Bite, Demonomania, and Bloodfeast. In fact, the only songs on this CD that I don't like are Rat Fink and Halloween II.
If you're looking to buy your first Misfits albums, buy Walk Among Us, and the two Collection albums. Trust me, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars a great work but..........2006-06-30

i own this album, collection 1, walk among us and static age. the production on collection 1 is horrible compared to the rest but in my opinion collection 1 has the best songs, just poor quality. danzig has an awesome voice but he doesnt sing to please everyone...he sings cuz he likes to rock out. as a misfits junkie i would recommend collection 1 first then pick up the rest (static age and walk among us). where eagles dare is still my all time fav misfits song. its vulgar but how can you not like it?

3 out of 5 stars Not necessary.......2006-04-20

I was a big Misfits- fan about a half year ago. I bought 3 of their albums, Collection 1, Legacy Of Brutality and this one. Now the problem that I have, is that there really isn`t an essential Misfits collection (Box Set maybe, but not everyone needs THAT much Misfits). I prefer this one, because Collection 1 has poor versions of great songs, and Legacy Of Brutality sounds muddy as hell. I am actually still kicking myself for the mistake of buying so many Misfits CD`s, because Static Age has almost every great song in it. Walk Among Us would be a good album too.

This doesn`t mean that this one sucks. Not at all, this CD still has their best songs like Last Caress, Attitude and We Are 138, plus some of my personal favorites like Return Of The Fly, another version of Hatebreeders and We Bite. But that`s about it really. What we need is a definitive Misfits collection, preferably on one CD, that has all of their best stuff from Static Age, Walk Among Us and the two Collections.

So, don`t make the same mistake I did, unless you are really, really into Misfits. And even then you should think about how long you are going to be a big fan. For casual fans, I would recommend Static Age or Walk Among Us. This one is for the die-hards only.

4 out of 5 stars great songs, inferior set list.......2006-10-13

Ask any Cocteau Twin to choose 18 songs for a compilation, and you're likely to get a different response each time. Still, Stars and Topsoil leaves out too many first-rate songs to be considered truly representative collection.

Let's start with track one. Why was Blind Dumb Deaf chosen to represent the Garlands album, and not Wax and Wane? Scanning though the rest of the list, I picked up on some glaring omissions, including From the Flagstones, Crushed, and Oomingmak.

Furthermore, a proper collection would have encompassed the whole of their catalogue, not just up to 1990. Bluebeard, anyone?

Sorry to say it, but I think this compilation, not being a true "best-of", is a waste of money for all but those completely unfamiliar with the Twins' music.

5 out of 5 stars Escape to a beautiful place.......2005-09-25

I cant say anything bad about Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice makes me melt and she takes me where I want to go.The guitarists Will and Robin work in perfect harmony with liz providing a perfect sureal soundscape. Pure bliss.

5 out of 5 stars "Pink Orange Red" worth the price alone.......2005-08-15

I'll be brief - The Cocteau Twins have made some of the most heavenly, lush, etheral, otherworldly music I've ever heard. The atmospheres they create are so palpable you can almost step into them. For years, my personal favorite CT song was "Pink Orange Red," originally on the TINY DYNAMINE ep. Alas, I became permanently seperated from my old vinyl collection from the 80s (long story) and couldn't get this song for ages. So when STARS AND TOPSOIL came out and I saw "Pink Orange Red" on it, I snatched it up in a heartbeat.

I would agree that this is not a "best-of" collection, but nearly every song here is fantastic. Actually, it does include my least favorite CT song "Sugar Hiccup," but I'm the only one that seems to be mildly annoyed with this track so no matter. Undenyably, STARS does include some of CT's best music, like "Aikea-Guinea."

This is a fine place to start for newbes although just about anywhere will work since most of their music is wonderful. My first CT was THE PINK OPAQUE which actually is somewhat of a "best of" collection. Maybe the best album to pick up first would be TREASURE or their debut GARLANDS which is a bit heavier, darker and gothic compared to some of their later works which focus more on beauty. Some of the last few albums they released like HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS are a bit more slick and digestable, but still great.

5 out of 5 stars The 44th greatest Scottish band of all time..........2005-05-17

...according to List Magazine, that is. This collection proves that the Cocteau Twins should rank somewhat higher, say, 26th, right behind Nazareth. Seriously, though, no matter how often I listen to it, I can't figure out how the band came up with their song structures, their arrangements, their sound. Multilayered, ethereal, dreamy--their music is unlike anything that came before it to my knowledge. I really have no idea who their influences might have been. Perhaps this quality is why their work has aged so well. Or maybe because Elizabeth Fraser is a brilliant vocal artist, unlike any other in pop. For those who already love the Cocteau Twins, this CD may be interesting for the remastered versions. The liner notes are weak, though. For those unfamiliar with the band, this is a fine place to start.

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting album.......2004-12-01

I am not really familiar with The Cocteau Twins music except for their enchanting album "Treasure" and now "Stars and Topsoil: a Collection (1982-1990)". I bought "Treasure" last year on a whim. I had always wanted to check out their music. I had heard a song or two by the Scottish trio over the years but I couldn't remember them. I liked what I heard and thought they were worth looking into. I immediately fell under Elizabeth Frasier's haunting vocals. She has one of the most incredible voices in pop music. No one really sings like her. Her voice can be fragile yet powerful at the same time. Robin Guthrie's shimmering guitar riffs complements Elizabeth's delicate vocals. Listening to The Cocteau Twins' music is such a joy to listen to. I especially love the addictive "Sugar Hiccup" which is simply irresistably infectious and the swirling sounds of "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops". I am also a big fan of "Lorelei" and "Pandora" too. I thought "Stars and Topsoil" is a great introduction to newer listeners like myself and gives me a broad idea of the band's music. I loved all the songs. As I listened to the cd, I could hear their influence on bands like Black Tape For a Blue Girl and Lycia iwth their haunting, ethereal pop melodies. I defintely plan on picking up the band's other remastered albums in the near future
