5 out of 5 stars This is a monument to Kate's talent.......2005-12-01

I discovered Kate through an NPR interview where soon after I purchased Wandering Strange. I have been a devoted fan ever since. All of her Albums are good, but some are definitely stronger than others. Monuments is by far the best so far. The stories she tells in these songs are fascinating, and yet the stories would be nothing with the music. The first song is haunting about the man with the yellow guitar she picks up who has her in tears with his playing. Her ode to Joe Louis in comparison to Mohammad Ali is ingenius. It's all tied together Louis's furnture. New South is fun and touching at the same time. Corn in a Box is about wonder. This is a fabulous album that I don't think I will ever tire of.

4 out of 5 stars Tunes 4 the New South.......2003-08-11

Kate Campbell picks up where her amazing "Rosaryville" CD left off. She chronicles the south on tracks like the "Yellow Guitar," "Halfway to Memphis, halfway to Tupelo." "Corn in a Box" throbs with Walt Aldridge's acoustic rhythm guitar. "If we're spinning through the heavens on a giant little ball, don't you think that it's incredible how we manage not to fall," Kate sings on the beautiful "Strangeness of the Day." "New South" is a playful tune, "They make Mercedes down in Vance, Alabama; And Tennessee is cranking Nissans out; I read about in my Wall Street Journal; we're all living in the new south." My favorite track is "How Much Can One Heart Hold," it's upbeat melody contrasts with the lyrics' sadness of fighting in the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam. The CD concludes with one of Kate's most haunting tracks, "Walk Among the Stones." With the cover art being grave markers, "Monuments" is as somber and heavy in subject, as it is gorgeous in melody and excellent in musicianship. While all of Kate's work is special, this set & "Rosaryville" are my two very favorites. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars music for living.......2003-06-11

Blessed with a heartbreakingly beautiful voice and a keen sense of grace in the midst of pain, Kate Campbell creates lyrics that are bound up with stories, most of them tied to the American South. The stories are poignant, but never sentimental. She does not shy away from the strangeness and painfulness of life, nor its beauty. She writes about real people in such a way that their lives enrich those of her listeners. This is true not only of Monuments, but also of her other cds. Her music and her words have a way of getting into the listener's life. They certainly have become a part of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering.......2003-05-30

As with Kate Campbell's other CDs (Songs From the Levee, Moonpie Dreams, Visions of Plenty, Rosaryville, and Wandering Strange) Monuments is centered on a central theme. With Monuments, Campbell explores the poignancy of the past and its relevance in the present. Monuments are, after all, made and displayed for remembering. You should listen to this CD from beginning to end because the songs are positioned in such a way as to make them even more meaningful and to raise further questions. For example, "New South" makes clear historian Eric Foner's conclusion that the South was remade in the image of the North after the Civil War, but the next number, "Petrified House," is about a southern woman determined to continue living in the Old South in her "pertrified house." For me, as a Christian, "The Way Home" helped me greatly. But then, all of Kate Campbell's stories help me, whether she is writing and singing about the South, about the strangeness of a complex world, or about bowling alleys and homegrown tomatos. You will not be disappointed in Kate Campbell's latest offering.

5 out of 5 stars Sparrow!.......2006-07-21

I don't have any special points to add, I just wanna keep the ratings high cuz this album rules and is, as others have pointed out, a really skillful combination of all the cool punky s*** we love so much. It's not exactly crust and it's definitely not grind per se. It's more like complex/technical punk rock run through doom metal sludge. Which means you get a lot of rockin speedy short songs, except that they're heavy as hell, and they occasionally have slow doomy parts. Whatever. It doesn't matter what you call it, cuz when you hear this, it'll be like "omfg, this is like all the coolest non-trendy hardcore underground music that I've always liked smashed together". And if you're into political lyrics, HHIG definitely do that a lot more convincingly than other bands, which is cool too. I don't have any of their other albums which is a shame, but I find myself listening to this a whole lot, even though I mostly listen to like noise and experimental music otherwise. Also, I ordered this from Am(a)zin directly (not from some used seller) and after an entire half year of not getting it, cancelled my order and found it in a cool record store like a couple weeks later. Just a thought...

5 out of 5 stars A crucial record!!!!.......2006-03-05

I first got this lp around the first week it was out and have listened to at least once a week for almost 9 years now!!! Combines all the best elements of trash, punk, and grind and mixes it with politically charged, intelligent lyrics. The guitars on this lp, as opposed to arson, are more melodic and oddly complex for this style of music. Own this or be lame!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brutality.......2004-11-01

If you've ever had an interest in hardcore, find this one. It's worth your time and money. Yet more proof heavy music doesn't need to be stupid, these guys show musical and lyrical eloquence. Oh, and very heavy. I've been on board since the 7" came out way back when. You folks who don't own a turntable shouldn't get too excited, but I own a third LP (12" 45rpm, more accurately. they all are...) titled "The Plot Sickens: Enslavement Redefined". I honestly don't know if that one came out on CD (I've bought all their stuff on vinyl along the way), but if you see it, get it. My vinyl is a black gatefold sleeve with the artwork printed in orange. For no reason I can explain, that is my favourite HHIG release, but they're all consistent in their quality. I do agree, it's odd finding this on amazon, but hey: I think it's about time. Finally a corporate acknowledgement of the existence of the underground music scene, other than to ban it and treat it like a threat. Hey, for those into any form of underground music, myself also including hip hop and black metal in my collection, try typing in names of bands/artists you dig. You may be surprised at what is on here, like DropDead (even though I'll still take my hardcore on vinyl, at least there's some access to it now for those who don't have cool record stores near them.).

5 out of 5 stars Best Passionate Grind Band.......2004-03-27

Whoever rated this 4 and Arsons 5 is deeply wrong. While Arsons documents the bands first 7" and LP and more heavyset side, this is where it starts getting great. Yannick on guitar was also in one of underground hardcores most influential bands: Union of Uranus, which later HHIG did a split with. He brings his crazy sense of melody and heaviness to HHIG, this album is a little more less metal and more grind punk. The album that came after this one was ever more crust punk, these guys were always changing, but as musicians they always had it down.

"How long will take their pills?! How long will they lead?!"
This album brings forth a lot of anarcho-punk lyrics about society and class struggle etc. That's what I love the most about this album, from the cover to the lyrics, they know what they're talking about and they know how to play unlike any other grind band ever in existence. The doom sludge, to the epic anthemic melodic yet heavy punk rythms, to the straight grind, this is one of the most passionate super heavy grind, punk, hardcore, crust, whatever, albums/bands ever.

BTW It is sort of scary that you can get this on Amazon, but that's Prank Records fault, you certainly can't get their Great American Steak Religion stuff here.

4 out of 5 stars Punk You!.......2002-05-24

This is some heavy sludge-core punk, like a hardcore band doing Black Sabbath. Very angry and brutal; it worries me that you can get this kind of stuff on Amazon...go figure!

Album Description

Legacy Five is a beloved quartet founded on the principles learned from two giants in Christian music. George Younce and Glen Payne had a profound influence on thousands of people, none more so than Roger Bennett and Scott Fowler, both former members of the Cathedral Quartet and founders of Legacy Five. Continuing the tradition with Glenn Dustin, Scott Howard and Frank Seamans, Roger and Scott have recorded a labor of love in Monuments.

5 out of 5 stars L5 comes through again!.......2005-03-08

Aside from the fact that this is my all-time favorite southern gospel group, this is an amazing group.
This is their latest CD and it's a huge hit around my house. From the upbeat Roll Away to the worshipful Not That You Died, it's all about the cross and what Jesus did just for us on Calvary. These songs on this album will encourage you to keep the faith and perservere to go and see Jesus face to face.
Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Legacy Five's Best to-date.......2004-11-20

This is one of the, if not, the best recording ever made by Legacy Five. It's the first project that has Frank Seamans, the new tenor for the group and I feel he fits right in perfectly. This is a powerful CD with one simple message, it's all about the cross. It's well worth the money, I'd even buy it for friends and family. On another note, no pun intended, I would like point out some mistakes on Amazon's part. First, the label is Daywind Music and second, the real order of tracks are as follows. 1. Consider the Cross 2.Out of My Darkness 3. Roll Away 4. Unless 5. It's the Truth 6. Calvary Reminds Me 7. If It Couldn't Be Done 8. Not That You Died 9. Whosoever 10. Monuments 11. Raised to Walk 12. 5 out of 5 stars !?!?!?!?!?!?!?.......2007-02-10

THIS IS THE REAL FUEL! The early 90's bay area punk band. Not the post-alternative cookie cutter crap you would find at wal-mart. NOT the band who were SO desperate for a singer they whored themselves on American idol. If you are into hot water music, samiam and bands of the like, pick this up. If you are into creed and nickelback, then the OTHER fuel is more like to suit your tastes. And you have my sympathies.

5 out of 5 stars This is the TRUE Fuel.......2005-10-24

This is NOT the crappy band from PA that call themselves "Fuel". That band is complete and utter garbage, they sound exactly like every other post-grunge band out there.

This Fuel came first, therefore, they are the TRUE Fuel. This set the stage for bands like Hot Water Music and Propaghandi. If you aren't a hopeless moron and can appreciate awesome punk rock, then you will like this cd.

4 out of 5 stars ARE YOU GUYS IDIOTS.......2004-03-16

Who can every confuse this absolutley amazing band with the softer "FUEL". It is mind-boggolying that people would confuse and even write a bad review of this band when they don't know what they are about. REAL SMART, give yourself a pat on the back.
First this band came out of the SF scene about the same time Jawbreaker(another great band). This, I would consider emo-core, but I hate using that term. Sooooo many people use "emo" that the term gets tossed around like a rag doll and loses its meaning. Emo is slowed down hardcore that bands form the east coast started, bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Fugazi(more insturmental), and Dag Nasty. On the west coast we had Jawbreaker and Fuel plus a lot of underground emo.The lyrics are Brilliant on this record.

DISENGAGED
I'd like to help but I've got to worry about myself!
Taking the easy way out again?
It's not my fault. The problem belongs to someone else
Taking the easy way out again?
I've played my part. It's someone else's turn
Taking the easy way out again?
Dont show me the truth. It only makes my eyes burn
Taking the easy way out again?
When conflict is avoided, pricnciples fall void
We only serve to justify ourselves
As isolated islands we continue abstinence from action
In attempt to justify ourselves
I've got to fight. Macho stance I must defend
Taking the easy way out again?
Can't let them know I'm scared. I've got to pretend
Taking the easy way out again?
Can't speak out my ignorance will show
Taking the easy way out again?
I can't be hurt by what I don't know.
Taking the easy way out again?
When conflict are avoided, principles fall void
We only serve to justify ourselves
When we accept others pain, to uncontrolled reason we throw our blame.
We only serve to justify ourselves
Disengaged with a cynical pride the way that we were taught
Quite satisfied, fully denied, we sit back and watch
And I don't want to live my life like that
I don't want to live my life like that.

ABSOLUTELY Brilliant lyrics and that just one song. Every song has great lyrics and meaning. Good music makes you think, right?
Put these lyrics against any of "the softer FUEL" other band and it will lose badly, sorry. This is heartfelt and meaningful music and for anyone to bash it, shame on you?

1 out of 5 stars Let's See.............2004-02-03

maybe they call this "PUNK" Rock because a bunch of "PUNK'S" listen to it. After a formal review, I am very aware of both "Fuel" bands & must say, this particular "Fuel" SUCKS.. PUNKS!I find it humorous that anyone could compare the two, since this "Fuel" is so audioable you can scream along! And for those to even bash the REAL "FUEL", well all I have to say is...you must have a "Sunburn" in your Prince Albert, that's what all the screaming's about!

5 out of 5 stars New FUEL (Something Like Human; Sunburn) Sept. 23, 2003.......2003-08-11

THE UPCOMING NEW CD BY FUEL, THE BAND WHO BROUGHT YOU "SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN" and "SUNBURN", IS DUE TO BE RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2003. and it's about time !!! Just goes to show you....when choosing a name for your band, be careful to choose one that was never used before!!! Ask BMI or ASCAP for research on names.

We've surely all heard how great Megalomaniac is so I'll base this review off of the b-side, Monuments And Melodies.

Monuments And Melodies is definitely a ballad that I didn't see coming. Brandon's voice/lyrics really is what's put on display here and he comes through better than expected. I'll admit that at first I wasn't to keen on it, but (surprise!) with further listens I started to like it more and more. Next to I Miss You, this song will probably go down as Incubus' most effective love song/ballad. With emotion to spare and excellent vocals, don't pass this up if you're an Incubus fan.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All.......2004-07-05

This is a good cheap single i must say. Both are great songs by incubus but the reason i rate it 4 is becuase it is edited. I have heard megalomaniac on the radio so many times. I bought this hoping to hear the whole real version of the song.
1.Megalomaniac 9/10
2. Monuments And Melodies 10/10

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-05-05

Megalomaniac is an awesome single by itself, very deep and at the same time very incubus-ish. People who've known incubus for a while, and know more about them than "Morning View" will be happy to hear some of the old stuff (like s.c.i.e.n.c.e), only new!:-) And the (only released on this CD-) "Monuments and Melodies" is even better. It's a very slow song, but nontheless great. Brandon Boyd on the guitar!
It's a great CD for someone who doesn't know all facettes to incubus yet. Go get it :-)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recording of the King Kong Score.......2001-12-21

I own and have listened to all the recordings of the score to the film King Kong (1933). This is simply the best of them all. Fred Steiner's recording is even superior to Max Steiner's original soundtrack recording. The CD's only shortcoming is that Fred Steiner did not record the entire score. Most of the score is here, and it is magnificent.

    5 out of 5 stars A classic score.......2000-03-01

This recording was previously released but I couldn't get it before. That's why I'm glad to know that this magnificent score was re-recorded and is now avilable again. Fred Steiner reconstructed the score and, of course, this is the best recording ever made. Rhino and Ryko seals are trying to offer us old recordings with lots of dialogues... That's a pity.

Kate Campbell is one of those artists that, however good her recordings may be (and they are very good) she is best experienced in a live setting. Kate's songwriting/storytelling talent is well in evidence on Monuments. Singling out favorites is hard, but I will note "Joe Louis' Furniture", "How Much Can One Heart Hold" and "The Way Home" as standouts. If you are not familiar with her music, I would describe it as very personal Southern folk music that tells a story but leaves a bit of mystery, (for instance, what's the deal with "Corn in a Box?"). Like the best singer songwriters, Kate Campbell's songs are not likely to be confused with anyone else's.
