Fire down under.......2007-01-18

This album started Riot's slight claim to fame and is fantastic. Most definitely worth the buy. Riot remains one of the most overlooked bands of the 1980s best.

Underrated Hard Rocker.......2007-01-17

This hard rocker from Riot has been undeservedly lost in the shuffle. The hot opening track, "Swords and Tequila", possesses irresistible drive and energy. Another prime cut is "Outlaw", with has a good alternating feel shifting from the verse to the chorus and back again. The lead guitar work isn't overwhelming, but that's not the point of the album; almost every track is under 5 minutes, varies in arrangement from one song to the next, and has a solid groove. No 8-minute guitar solos here. The lyrics are better than many others in this genre, as well, but quite tame; if you get off on profanity-laced lyrics you will be disappointed by this one. But the songs really rock, so who cares?

Pre-hair metal masterpiece.......2006-08-10

This was what heavy metal was like before Def Leppard put out Pyromania and Ratt emerged. Heavy, great solos aggression and excellent songs. Once the mainstream caught on, it neutered the aggression and became posing. Listen to this album and you'll understand why metal caught on in the first place. Not a bad cut on the entire album. This album and Restless And Wild (not Balls To The Wall) by Accept show how brilliant early 80s metal can be.

Quality example of early Eighties rock/metal.......2006-08-07

Growing up in the early Eighties and rocking to bands comprising the NWOBHM and the emerging metal scene in the U.S., you'd think that one would be familiar with RIOT. I had never heard of them until two weeks ago when I happened to stumble across a review of them here on Amazon. I'm blown away. I am obsessed with this album. It rocks front to back (with the possible exception of the two bonus tracks at the end - depends on your taste). Definitely one of the top 100 metal albums of all time. They have a sound all their own. In my opinion, the guitar solo during the final two minutes of 'Feel The Same' is the highlight of the album. Anyone obsessed with early Eighties metal, or a fan of good rock guitar solos, should definitely add this masterpiece to their collection. 'Fire Down Under' is solid and will not dissapointe. It's heavy, melodic, and motivating and the musicianship and vocals are first rate. A superb effort from RIOT.

Fire still smokes.......2006-03-02

I first heard this classic back in '81, when it was first released,and it still sounds great today.I agree Riot should have made it big,but anyone with the "High Vaultage" issue knows why they did'nt if you read the liner notes. It definately deserves it's place on Kerrang's top 100 Metal album's of all-time. Is that a mink that appears on their album cover's and does anyone know why they chose it?

No, not Anymore.......2000-11-07

James Cotton is a blazing bluesman with a hot harp, but his voice has deteriorated so badly that this disc is basically unlistenable, except the cuts where Darrell Nullisch does the vocals. Cotton still plays great, but he shouldn't try to sing anymore. Just listen to the song samples to hear it for yourself.

if you enjoy blues with just guitars and harmonicas this cd id for you. james cotton can still play the harp,but his years of singing are behind him. the best two songs are its alright and boot knockin boogie with darrell nulisch on vocals.still muscially its a gem

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

A touch of history...........2002-01-28

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

This is my all time favorite RIOT album. I first bought the LP when it first came out in 1981 and it blew me away. Up to this date on 2007 and since the album first came out in 1981. I have this album with me in my car and in my PC at work. This is a MUST HAVE CD if you don't have it already. I do agree on MUSIC FRANTIC's review on this paticular EXTRA 5 Track CD. TAKE NOTE: The Metal Blade CD label has a better recording quality.

Beware of this version.......2006-01-26

As many people have already stated, this is one of the best metal albums ever made. This version also has the added bonus of having five bonus tracks. This version is badly mixed, though. I got this cd, and as much as I love this album, I had a hard time listening to it because of the sound quality. Fortunately, I found out on the Riot website that the release of this album by Metal Blade has the original mixes from the original tapes. I got that one, and it sounds incredible. It has three less bonus tracks than this version, but it's the original ten songs that I really want to have, and they sound so much better on the Metal Blade version.

Bottom line: if you like metal, your collection is incomplete without this masterpiece -- but get the Metal Blade release.

Metal gem..........2006-01-26

This thing rocks. In your face early 80's metal with not only speed elements, great vocals and guitar work but melodic force as well. This last effort with original vocalist Guy Speranza showcases "early" Riot at their metal peak. Why this classic effort didn't make these guys big is hard to fathom. Original guitarist Mark Reale carries on the Riot spirit to this day but if you are looking for the classic Riot sound this is the one to pick up. The bonus tracks are just an afterthought on this disc but believe me the original material on this release should be enough to please your hard rockin' palate. FYI: Riot is still making great hard rock/metal music with vocalist Mike Dimeo...

The Real Thing.......2003-04-23

This is one of the greatest hard rock records EVER. No goofy hair metal posturing, just lean hard rock and roll.
