The action in this tale about the 18th century adventurer and (at least in popular lore) seducer is set in Cassanova's native Venice in the mid-1700s, so it makes sense that the soundtrack would be loaded with Baroque pieces. The Venice-based Tomaso Albinoni is featured prominentaly, along with heavyweights such as Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Rameau, and George Frideric Handel, and lesser-known composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Durante, and Alexandre Desplat. Er, actually Desplat is a contemporary French film composer who also released his score for the couldn't-be-more-different Syriana shortly after Casanova came out. Of the two pieces he penned here, "A Venetian Virgin" is in pure Baroque style, while "Inquisitor Pucci" betrays a more modern film-music vibe. Meanwhile, orchestrator Sonny Kompanek rearranged a couple of the tracks and authored the tense "The Plume's Nom Is Casanova," which doesn't sound embarrassing sandwiched between pieces by Albinoni and Handel. Overall, it would have been nice to get longer excerpts from the pieces--many feel chopped into too-small fragments--but the music's innate grace and elegance can't be beat for a period film. Or for any film, really: Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major ("The Doge's Decree") will be familiar to buffs, who will remember it featuring prominently in the Dustin Hoffman-¬Meryl Streep showdown Kramer vs. Kramer back in 1979. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sheer Beauty for the Ears.......2006-07-25

For those that purchased this CD, I need not get into how masterfully infectious the movie was. After the first viewing, I found it charming, but after the second, I was hooked by the witty, clever story holding fun twists all along the way. So while I could go on and on about the movie and all of its wonderful aspects, the score was simply priceless. Apt in every scene, and all done with incredible baroque music that I had never had the opportunity of hearing before the film.

The disc walks you through the movie with no changes that I could tell from the original score. The only omission I found was that the song dubbed "Casanova's Theme" is played in much greater length in the closing credits, and that didn't seem to make it to the CD. Not a terrible loss.

Authenticity can sound great as well!.......2006-07-11

As an avid baroque music listener and performer, I can attest to the delightfully pleasing performances on the soundtrack as well as the painstakingly accurate performance practices utilized in the recording of this soundtrack.

The producers of this film fortunately went to the trouble of hiring some of the top period performance musician-specialists in the country (perhaps in the entire world) to record the soundtrack to Casanova. I know, because several of them were faculty members of the Oberlin Conservatory Baroque Performance Institute who went AWOL to Hollywood in June 2005 for the recording sessions. We all forgave them, and were actually quite excited that period music performance was having its day on the silver screen.

Do not miss this exquisite potpourri of wonderful baroque composers' works performed as closely as humanly possible to the way that they heard their works during their lifetimes! The film may not have been intended to be historically accurate (part of the fun), but the music certainly ended up that way. Not only that, but it sounds heavenly (unlike Casanova's antics) and up-to-date, not musty and old as if it were sealed in a museum case.

Lots of interesting baroque music unknown to me and
put together in dramatic sequences that add zest and
class to the listening experience. Also wonderful to
play in auto while driving thru boring country or in
slow moving traffic!
This CD will get a lot of play from me.

Wonderful relaxing music........2006-02-25

Saw the movie and had to have the soundtrack. Great music to relax by. When you need to get away from the cares of the day the classics can't be beat. The producers of this movie certainly chose wonderful music to accompany it.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. For fans of Sean Callery's work on 24, this CD is a must have. This soundtrack is also very enjoyable on long drives, and it brings you right into the show.

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

to sum it up! a mediocre soundtrack for a mediocre movie. WTF was milan thinking when they omitted one of the coolest songs from escape from la. which is the theme of snake surfing in pursuit of eddie. (played by steve buscemei)

as for shirley walker, sweetheart stick to doing what you do best and that's scoring BATMAN cartoons. even the final clash between snake and cuervo jones sounded like it came from the aforemention animated series. (sigh)

oh well, i guess i'll pass this one up.

Irreverent And Exciting.......2001-10-12

It's interesting how music goes as irreverent as the movie it was written for. John Carpenter does that in almost all his movies, especially "Escape From L.A.", in which he shares composition chores with testosterone lady Shirley Walker, a woman who knows her way through action film music.

The album opens with the classic "Escape From New York" theme, as arranged by Walker; this theme never sounded better. Carpenter's irreverence is best heard in 'Snake's Uniform' since you hear a lot of guitar effects in it. Yet I'd like to indicate that the highlight on this album is Shirley Walker's action pieces performed by both herself on synthesizers and herself conducting the orchestra -'Submarine Launch' is electronically fantastic; 'Escape From Happy Kingdom' and 'Crash Landing' show her best for orchestra. Also Walker knows what Carpenter wants since you can hear some irreverent cues such as 'Sunset Boulevard Bazaar' and 'Motorcycle Chase', a track with a "Batman Beyond" flair.

In general, this album is interesting, with honorable mention to Shirley Walker, an underappreciated composer who can show great chops in writing music for action films. Too bad this album is too short.

Some great music for a sequel/remake........2001-10-09

The rocking remix of the originial Escape from New York theme as well as Carpenter's "Snake's Uniform" track make this a must have for Carpetner buffs. Walker's compositions are strong back up to this overly maligned sequel/remake to the Carpenter classic.

EXCELLENT, BUT SOME GOOD STUFF MISSING.......2000-10-13

Actually the music that I bought the CD for isn't there. The music I am talking about is the music played when Snake chases after Eddie on the surfboard and when Snake shuts down the earth. That music was way cool but what has been left on the CD is still quite good. But the CD is a tiddler at only 31 minutes long. I don't know why Milan did this. Carpenter is an ACE musician and all his work should have been on this disc.

NICE HAPPY MUSIC.......1999-02-06

This music is totally light-hearted and hugely enjoyable. Track 3 is so cool and track 9 is kind of spooky. I only wish more tracks from the film were in it.

pretty decent soundtrack.......2005-11-13

this soundtrack is one of those soundtracks that stands out just a bit better than the movie. for me, this cd is pretty good with only 5 tracks that are kinda weak. i thought the ministry track "paisely" was great. going into this really deep depressing sound that ministry rarely ever visits. "the one" shows white zombie ultizing a rare keyboard usage that is fantastic. "10 seconds down" while already previously released on sugar ray's debut "lemonade & brownies", it's nice to have it without the tie-in to "danzig needs a hug". "dawn" is just one of those stabbing westward songs you'll either love or hate, personally, i love it myself. it's slow and at times hard and pounding. and then theres the deftones track. a gem that was unjustly left on their b-sides album. if anything, this warrants a buy for that tracks alone. i could on forever singing the praises of the songs that i thought were good that make this a rarity worth buying...but i won't. it's better to get a taste and decide for yourself.

Great soundtrack.......2004-02-05

Proof that director John Carpenter's metal-esque influence on the musical scores to his films is ever prominant; the soundtrack to his 1996 film Escape From L.A. further illustrates this point. White Zombie's "The One" is a ripping track that makes this compilation an absolute must have for White Zombie fans the world over, while Stabbing Westward's "Dawn", Tool's "Sweat", Gravity Kills' "Blame", Clutch's "Escape From the Prison Planet", and the Deftones' "Can't Even Breathe" are all standout tracks. Sugar Ray's "10 Seconds Down" is a must hear just to hear that this band was actually half decent before they succombed to the world of pop radio, while Ministry's "Paisley" finds the band at their sludgey "Filth Pig" era stage. Tori Amos is an odd artist to be featured here to say the least, but her "Professional Widow" cut is a good listen. All in all, the Escape From L.A. soundtrack is definitely worth picking up for metalheads and industrial buffs.

Joltin' John Carpenter does it again- only better........2001-02-11

John Carpenter, whose understated scores beautifully underscore the action (or the mood) in his films, has, in conjunction with Shirley Walker, produced some of his finest work to date. There are punched-up reprises of some of the tracks from his earlier score for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (and the electronic enhancement works well), but fans will find his "western theme" (in the movie, it's played when Kurt Russell suits up prior to entering L.A.) a welcome addition. The tracks here show a definite progression in terms of the music found "under" his films: there are some vast improvements throughout. Highly recommended.

Some bright spots, some cloudy........2000-11-02

Ironically, this soundtrack fails in the same way that it succeeds. A paradox? Maybe. Here's the breakdown:

I'm a huge White Zombie / Rob Zombie fan. When this soundtrack was released, there was only one song on it that I really cared about: "The one". I had heard it live at a Zombie / Pantera show in SF a month prior, and the song just ripped up the audience.

To my delight, the record contained a bunch of songs by some of my favorite bands; Tool, Ministry, Clutch and Sugar Ray. Sadly, not enough of these were new or very good tracks. "Paisley" is indicative of the turgid sludge that Ministry has become, no fire or wit or power. "Cut me out" shows little of the catchy yet ominous style that made "Possum Kingdom" a hit. I already had "Sweat" (tool) "Escape from the Prison Planet", "Professional Widow" (Tori Amos) and "Fire in the Hole" (orange 9mm) on CD, so this stdk was really a re-hash. The tracks that stuck out for me were "10 Seconds Down", a monster rock track by Sugar Ray at the height of their rocking-ness, "The One", a classic Zombie track, and "Foot on the Gas" by a band I had never heard of before and have never heard from since called Sexpod. the Deftones track was OK. The Stabbing Westward song was as weak as all of their post-UNGOD material.

I think soundtracks succeed most often when they include rare tracks or good remixes of songs we already know. All the people who were likely to buy this soundtrack probably already had most of the songs on it, and that never works (you can tell by the wealth of reviews on this page!). I'm sure it didn't help that the movie tanked royally, and most people will miss a couple great songs.

Personally, I think the movie looks dumb, but I haven't seen it. But this soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks I have. Best bands on here: Deftones,Orange 9mm, Tool, White Zombie, Pre-sellout Sugar Ray, Gravity Kills, and Stabbing Westward. If you like this cd, buy the Bride of Chucky or Crow:City of Angels soundtracks.

Heard these guys in a small bar in Portland several years ago, bought the CD. Wore it out & bought another- have given it as gifts so friends could enjoy it as well. Its music that is timeless, and tireless. My personal favorites are Steel Blue Eyes, and Little Saigon. Another Portland band, no longer together- Little Women have a cool blues sound- if you get the chance buy Radish Head at any price- you won't be disappointed.

Thoughtful, intelligent lyrics combined with the soul of a bar band. If Tom Petty lived in Portland, Oregon this is what he would be doing. In person they are even better!
