Customer Reviews:
A terrific compilation.......2002-06-08
The idea of a greatest hits album for a classical composer is nearly an absurdity, but the selections for this package are almost perfect. The signature magic sound of Ormandy and his great Philly Orchestra open with Symphony 4 movement 1.Ormandy and crew reappear later with the war march from Athalie-a true crowd pleaser. Not to be missed is the On wings of song piece sung by Elly Ameling in all her pristine glory. The song is simply beautiful beyond words.Movements 3&4 of the Incomparable Octet for strings are included. At the tender age of 16 Mendelssohn may have reached his peak with this work. The 6 Children's pieces are delightful,if insubstantial. The 4th movement of the 5th Symphony is a force of nature, perhaps the highlight of the disc. The only quibble is the inclusion of the hackneyed Wedding March instead of the achingly gorgeous Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dream.Even for the Mendelssohn fan there are performances here you'll want to add to your collection. At such a low cost you cannot go wrong.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Wanna Fight?!.......2006-11-02
Rob Halford is the best heavy metal vocalist of all time. He has a great talent for surrounding himself with guitarists that compliment his style. I thought that nothing could be better than Priest but I was wrong with this CD Halford cranked the JP sound up a notch and kept it fresh.
Awesome album. "Nailed to the Gun" and "War of Words" are my favorites.
Not Pantera-Inspired.......2006-04-25
Back in the early 90's, Rob Halford left Judas Priest to produce music not musically fit for Priest. Drummer Scott Travis left with him and while Judas Priest hired Ripper Owens; Halford formed Fight. Listening to it, the band is definitley different from Judas Priest. A lot of people say its Pantera-inspired.
I disagree with that. Pantera is harder than Fight and Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo has a deep voice. On this album, Rob Halford (who's a very gifted vocalist and can sing in many different pitches) sings a majority of the songs in a very high pitched voice. Some of the songs he sings the same way he did in Judas Priest, but on very few songs could you classify Halford's voice as even "kind of" deep. But the music does have a crunching guitar sound, a great bass rhythm wall, and Scott Travis's abnormally fast drumming. It's got a different sound from Priest most definitley and the lyrics are different too. The fact is, bands like Judas Priest aren't known for their lyrics. In a band like that, lyrics don't matter. In Fight, Halford has lyrics about freedom of speech and gun control among other things. The songs are as follows:
1. Into the Pit-5/5-The drums come out loud & fast. Then Rob Halford begins singing in his abnormally high pitch voice he can do. It sounds great.
2. Nailed to the Gun-5/5-Rob Halford now sings in his regular voice. The backup vocals on the chorus are really cool.
3. Life in Black-4/5-This song is just OK.
4. Immortal Sin-5/5-Really good song. The beat is grinding and good. There are times when Rob Halford doesn't even sound like Halford.
5. War of Words-5/5-Really good lyrics about freedom of speech.
6. Laid to Rest-4/5-Not my favorite song.
7. For All Eternity-5/5-This is more of a ballad, but it sounds like a Judas Priest song.
8. Little Crazy-5/5-Really good song. The guitar playing is great.
9. Contortion-5/5-"Contortion. All I see is red." Rob Halford in angry mode.
10. Kill It-5/5-As I said, I don't see this album as being Pantera-inspired at all, but if it is it's most evident on this song.
11. Vicious-5/5-One of the best on here.
12. Reality, A New Beginning-5/5-A good album closer, Halford's cadence on this song is cool.
At the end of the last track if you wait a few minutes, there's a hidden track that would probably called "Jesus Saves" and features some really odd sounding vocals by Rob Halford. Sounds like overlapping vocals of Halford and a young child. I have one more thing to add. Before rejoining Judas Priest, Rob Halford was in three bands. This bad, Two (which was produced by Trent Reznor and featured Marilyn Manson-guitarist John5),
and Halford. I haven't actually heard the Halford album, but if I walked into a music store and was going to buy this or Two, I'd buy Two. This album is pure heavy metal. Two was really electronic/Nine Inch Nails sounding. All the songs on that album, it's the same on this one too though, were awesome and really catchy although Halford's voice sounds really almost unrecognizably different. Anyway, Judas Priest will always be Rob Halford's band but this is a worthy entry in Rob's discography.
GRADE: A-
Still a great album.......2005-06-10
War Of Words is the first album Rob Halford released after his departure from Judas Priest. War of Words does not really sound like the music from Judas Priest. Sure there are minor resemblances with Judas Priest's Painkiller album, but overall it was a new start for Halford. By the way, Judas Priest drummer Scott Travis played the drums on this album.
Musically War Of Words reminds of then popular bands like Fear Factory, Pantera, Prong, and Biohazard. To put it in other words, expect a mixture of Thrash Metal and Hardcore. The guitarists mainly play heavy chunky riffs, but there are also more melodic songs like "Immortal Sin". Also expect some excellent solos. The opening song "Into The Pit" reminds me the most of the Judas priest area. It is a song that goes from mid tempo to fast. The song sounds like a mixture of the albums Painkiller and Jugulator. The song "Life In Black" reminds me of the doomy Black Sabbath.
For a 1993 release, the production is really excellent. The production is really heavy and clear. Are there also negative aspects on this album? Yes there are. Some songs could have used more diversity, more tempo changes, different patterns, etc. Musically, some songs are based around only a few riffs and that's it. The remix album Mutations, where 5 songs from War Of Words have been remixed, shows that with use of electronics these songs become more interesting. Also the clean vocals of Halford could have been better. The clean vocals should have been less raw, but maybe the rawer clean vocals suites the music better. Vocally there are also some typical hardcore shouts like in the song "Contortion".
It is strange when you compare War Of Words and Jugulator, Priest their first album without Halford. These albums have more in common with each other than with other Priest records. Strange! Overall, War Of Words is still a great album.
solid thrash; good step post-Priest.......2005-04-20
this was Rob Halford's first project after leaving Judas Priest following the Painkiller album. This is good, solid thrash. Riffs are good and solid drumming by former priest drummer, Travis. Anywho, a very good album. The only reason I don't give it the full 5 stars is because it lacks diversity. There are about 3 songs on here that are all good, but all sound remarkably similar. The sound picks up where Painkiller left off and if you're into that, you will likely enjoy this.
A true classic..........2005-04-16
Rob Halford knew exactly when to abandon the incredibly pretentious and out of touch monster that was Judas Priest. While "Painkiller" was a soaring metal cruncher it bore the IQ of an 14 year old and showed that Priest had finally peaked and needed a rest. As a man in his late 30's-early 40's it became obvious that Rob was looking to sing less about "metal monsters" and "metal meltdowns" and more about something that hit closer to home for him. Politics, AIDS, insanity, new beginnings and deep secrets became the grist from which Rob would pull his rather tormented vocals. I hate particularly when people call this a "Pantera" influenced record as this record does little "groovecore" and slams more convincingly as a mixture of low-down street thrash and late 80's crossover such as Cryptic Slaughter and the Cro-Mags. Rob took something tough, fresh and fast and made a one-dimensional but pummeling record in which he growled, screamed and shouted his way through thoughtful lyrics and a scooped "tone of hell" production. His backing band was ferocious and young enough to put Rob back in the position of making music that found a purpose beyond trying to be "video game" styled entertainment that was long tiring on the worldwide metal throng.
Among the many highlights on this record include the double-time "Into the Pit" and "Nailed to the Gun" displayed a chugging machine-grind that benefits from Halfords throaty delivery. Slower numbers like "Reality - A New Beginning", "Little Crazy" and "Immortal Sin" give room for passionate vocal performances that finally show Rob tackling ideas that were actually important to him as the time. "For All Eternity", "Laid to Rest" and "War of Words" also provide strong moments for the band as well. "Life in Black" may not be the most exciting track and "Kill It" may be a bit 'durrrrrrr' but but the rest is a strong example of a man who wanted to try something new and embraced the sound as an honest personal expression.
While many debated the value of Fight, I feel that this first record with it's snazzy and rather confrontational artwork, lyrics and strong political stance made dolts like Pantera and the like look rather immature and left to the rednecks. This would also be Rob's last extreme vocal performance for quite some time as he would explore other vocal styles for a period of time before coming back to the screaming metal style on his own.
This is a classic that stands for quite a bit and draws a reaction from anyone connected to the Priest camp. I for one found it passionate, grinding and rather impressive from a man who had only been singing about the "wings of steel/deadly wheels", "metal meltdown" and "hell patrol" just a few moments earlier.
I suggest that fans of old-skool metalcore, Rob Halford and even those who liked the more brutish Judas Priest tracks to purchase this...

Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30
Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.
Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.
A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24
Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

Not even Lenny can get an orchestra to play Sousa well!.......2006-04-20
I'm sorry - but if you want to hear a march done well - it has to be with a band! Sousa and strings DO NOT MIX! There are some orchestral marches on this Cd and they're well done...but come on, Stars and Stripes sounds wrong with cellos instead of euphoniums!!!
I also have found that Lenny takes the Sousa marches way too quickly. It almost sounds like he was insulted to have to record a Cd of these lesser pieces of music - so he rushed through it to get it over with.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you want to hear marches: Buy a band recording (the SOUSA box set by the Marine Band). Trust me, you'll hear the difference.
Great Marches.......2005-10-02
This is an excellent CD for those who enjoy march music. One doesn't often find Sousa and opera marches on the same CD, but this has an excellent compilation of all the "great marches." Leonard Bernstein beats the orchestras into a peppy pace. It's a wonderful CD to accompany exercise routines and fast walking. Buy it!
Not the best but a good one.......2005-06-29
This CD is not the best one but it is an honest one. It contains the best-known marches that have been recorded between 1967 and 1976. The orchestration is good, the choice of marches is good too. I have heard better performances but it does not mean that this CD is not good. It is an honest CD and if it is the first CD of marches that you buy, it is a good choice. There are so many CD of marches that I have only one thing to say : listen different CD and choose the one that will please you. You buy a CD for you; not for the rest of the World.
Can I get my money back.......2004-02-10
Great selection of music but poor technical quality on the CD.
Sounds "muddy" compared to other CDs. Some of the tracks do appear on other CDs I own so I have basis for comparison.
Don't know if problem is in the "mike-ing" and mixing on original material or in the conversion to CD format.
I'd like to return this CD for refund
Indeed a Great Album.......2001-06-14
I agree that this is a fine album, containing the best-known marches, from the pure marches by Sousa to the operatic and theatrical marches by Verdi and such. This album is probably the only march CD you'll probably ever need. Otherwize, try the one with Arthur Fiedler. His album is pretty good too.

Snapshots of the War.......2006-03-01
This collection of speech and song excerpts gives listeners a sense of the Second World War and how it effected popular culture. As the editors admit, it is rather light-hearted, with humorous songs mixed with news broadcasts and narration. Although it is not an archive of material from 1939 - 1945, the CDs provide a series of audio snapshots of WW II.
Cross purposes?.......2002-08-15
I bought this item primarily for historical purposes, to have on my shelf the actual words and sounds of the period. I think the editors had a different purpose in mind, perhaps to weave the important historical speeches with the music of the day in order to achieve a more narrative perspective with some entertainment value added. The "excerpting" of tunes and speeches was a bit overdone, I think, especially when one knows what the rest of the speech was, and I found myself waiting for the real point of the speech which came, as usual, toward the end. What you hear on this disc are primarily the oft-quoted preambles to speeches. Also, the riveting words of Mr. Churchill to the United Kingdom and the Empire were given less representation than they should have been.
Technically, the two disc set was remarkably clean and the digital processing successfully eliminated the surface noise and degradations of time on these historic recordings. Very well done.
If you're looking for an important historical record, look elsewhere, but for a "mass market" overview of this terrible time this set serves its purpose well.

Glenn Gould Edition: Chopin / Mendelssohn / Scriabin / Prokofiev.......2007-05-17
I am totally satisfied with the condition of the cd and it was delivred promptly and in perfect condition.
Thank you very much.
Scriabin is Gould's best.......2007-05-10
I've finally heard a recording of Glenn Gould some of which I like. The Scriabin pieces suit his talents perfectly. As other reviewers have stated, the Chopin sonata is just plain weird, and who cares about the Mendelssohn? Prokofiev is one of my favorite composers for piano, and I borrowed these disks just to hear what Gould would do to him. In the end, I'm ambivalent; there's plenty of dash, but not much sonority to Gould's performance. His piano is indisputably a hammer-clavier. The bottom line is that I much prefer Richter.
superlative scriabin and prokofiev........2006-12-18
Gould didn't like Chopin's sonatas. It kinda shows. He takes a satirical approach to the music - it is fascinating, in a way, but don't buy this cd for the chopin sonata.
Buy it for the Scriabin and Prokofiev. The Prokofiev 7th is especially fulfilling. Simply superlative. Pollini or Richter's accounts each have their own merits, but Gould nails the sonata with a clear idea of where the composer intends to take us with all those dissonant and percussive music.
The Scriabin fifth is also the best i've heard. Gould takes a different approach and puts the sonata against the metronome, with a steady pulse and all that. surprisinly, it works, and what you have is an amazingly legible reading of a normally illegible piece of apocalyptic music.
New visions around old musical patterns!.......2006-05-08
After a quarter of Century from his death, Gould `s fame is still increasing. Glenn Gould constituted for Canada and the rest of the world, the new prototype of the rebel generation of the piano. He literally demolished barriers and imposed a new approach in what concerns to play Bach.
This album constitutes a true rarity in all senses. This is a repertoire that few or nothing has to do with him. From his interview of 1959, he stated clearly he did not like Chopin at all, according him, Frederick was not a good composer and just a superb miniaturist. But in the early seventies something deep inside changed and decided to play the Third Piano Sonata and these selected pieces of Mendelssohn.
For all those purists this approach, surely may be not pleasantly well received. It' s an Anti Romantic approach, Gould was always an enfant terrible and these works must be listened taking into account this statement.
His Scriabin is fabulous; enigmatic and loaded of a dark poetry. His Prokoviev is extremely interesting.
And please remember: All new art demands the extinction of the established order. That explains that, behind the ashes of the Romanticism, the Impressionism was borning : Death and transfiguration.
THE BEST AND NOT-BEST OF GOULD.......2004-12-30
These two discs, both made when Gould was in his late 30's or turning 40, are different in origin. The first, containing the Chopin sonata, the Mendelssohn and some Scriabin and Prokofiev, is of broadcasts over CBC. More Prokofiev and Scriabin on disc # 2, but studio recordings this time, done in New York. There is some wonderful playing here, indeed most of it is superb. The downer is the Chopin sonata - oh dear me, this will never do.
Loquacious as ever, Gould lets the world know about Chopin's shortcomings as a composer in large-scale forms. Until I heard the sonata from him I wasn't bothered by this, because he sometimes pontificates on some work to its disfavour and then gives a cracker of a performance, as with Bach's Italian concerto and Chromatic Fantasy. This time the omens were right - he doesn't like Chopin's B minor sonata and it shows. Just to complete the party, Sony apologise for some of the recorded quality on the broadcast disc, and this piece is the one where it's below par. I would not have recognised Gould's highly individual touch, normally unmistakable, from it. The first movement is the worst - far too slow and played with an artificial clarity. The last movement might have been interesting on another day, with the same choppy distinctness in the rondo theme the first time round but with more pedal when it recurs, but it doesn't work for me on this occasion. The two middle movements are better, but the scherzo needs more brilliance and the largo sounds uninvolved. My thoughts reverted enviously to the bright-eyed innocence of Cziffra in both movements.
Once done with that I was back with the great player I bought this set to hear. Most of the Mendelssohn and most of the smaller Scriabin and Prokofiev numbers are new to my collection, which is no model of planning or order. I was delighted instantly by Gould's freshness and clarity in the first Song Without Words, a beautiful and convincing counterbalance to the more romantic account of it that I have on LP from the great Guiomar Novaes, who now seems to be largely forgotten. Everything goes right for me from here on, although Gould's handling of the first movement in the Scriabin sonata # 3 raised my eyebrows a bit. I am used to Horowitz and Ashkenazy in this work. Both take the movement considerably faster, but there is no tempo indication, and Gould strikes me as a natural Scriabin stylist, something I would also say of Horowitz but much less of Ashkenazy. What the composer does say is `Drammatico', and this quiet approach is not my own idea of being dramatic, although Gould does admittedly build up the tone in the latter stages of the movement. The other Scriabin sonata is simply terrific, and in Prokofiev's fearsomely difficult 7th sonata Gould turns in a performance of dumbfounding virtuosity, as he does on another recording of it that I have from him.
Gould's playing is playing that I respond to strongly in general, and this is a set I respond to strongly in general too. On the first disc the recorded quality improves after that sad Chopin, although there is a certain amount of tape-noise in the background. I have no problems at all with the recorded quality on the second disc, and the multi-lingual liner note has an easy job in being informative and interesting owing to the considerable help it gets from the garrulous Mr Gould himself.
