5 out of 5 stars Best Cherubino..........2007-05-06

No kidding. This album has the best Cherubino part compared to the other Le Nozze di Figaro copycat. After you've listened to Non so più cosa son, you would feel bad hearing the other rendition of the same song.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful music.......2006-06-20

you do not have to be an opera expert to appreciate this cd , as a person who is just beging to appreciate fine opera this is a wonderful choice . waht is nice amazon gives you the opportunity to listen to the tracs prior to buying it. i am extremelly pleased with this item and im sure you will be to. sincerly christian john nielsen

5 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes and Listen.......2006-05-28

If right now you need to know joy and timelessness, a heart filled with light, beauty that has been and will be always, overflowing with the splendor you are fashioned from, knowing all that is your own, that you are only in the least important sense alone, with nothing to fear other than never perceiving any of this, close your eyes and listen to the Duettino Sull'aria from Le Nozze di Figaro...

5 out of 5 stars Terrific value, beautiful quality........2004-04-16

This CD is a wonderful value with top-notch recording. The Cherubino character (mischievous lovestruck youth) is especially delightful on this CD. I fell in love with "Sul Aria" in The Shawshank Redemption, and later saw this opera live. Though it's only a highlights album, I found it rather complete, with solid linear notes (plot summary for you to follow along), and ALL of the beloved songs I had remembered. I recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional recording.......2003-09-29

The quality of this recording is exceptional. Naxos recordings are often played on classical music stations for good reason. The performances are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars I got it for the same reason...........2006-03-07

as many of the others...because that one song that echoed over the courtyard of Shawshank Prison grabbed me. So, I looked in the credits and discovered this. OK, so it's just the highlights, but it's an AMAZING album from start to finish. Presented with passion, humanity, and sometimes even humor. Sometimes opera will drive me up the wall when I don't like one of the singer's voices, but this one has a wonderful collection of talent, and is very easy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the full-length version?.......2003-05-03

I have both the highlights and the full recording of this version of Figaro. For some reason, though, Amazon doesn't seem to carry the full version, which is too bad. This is one of the few operas I actually think needs the recitiatives.
Anyway, so since the acting doesn't matter too much on a highlights version I won't get into that. The singing is very good, in fact I think it's probably the best version of Figaro out there. The only exception is in regards to Gundula Janowitz's performance of Dove Sono, which seems to be very ill-suited to her voice. The rest of her part is done beautifully. I also think it's sad that Marcellina's aria was left off, since that is always one of my favorite songs and I will never intentionally buy a recording where it has not been included, but due to how frequently it gets cut, I am not surprised.
Anyway, I recommend the highlights version if you are after something you can listen to in the car and don't want to bother with a full three disc set. For all other purposes I would advise you to track down the full-length recording, which is definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars "Che belle voci!".......2002-06-26

This recording is fantastic. Bohm is a lively, exciting conductor who can also make one wet-eyed in the final scene. Prey has the perfect blend of mischievousness and richness of sound for Figaro's character, and he is well-matched by Edith Mathis as Susanna who is delightful and full-voiced. Gundola Janowitz as the Countess is also amazing, and her "Dove sono" is really moving. Fischer-Dieskau is a powerful Count, too. Troyanos (Cherubino) is beyond praise and her "Voi che sapete" ranks with Frederica von Stade. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the selections are good, though I wish the sextet "Riconosci in questo amplesso" was included. In all, great!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great opera.......2001-08-18

The Marriage of Figaro is arguably one of the best operas ever developed, and it's great to know that this cd contains the best songs from the fabulous opera. The orchestra, along with the singers, give a grand performance of high caliber. If you enjoy classical music, then this will make a magnificent addition to your musical collection.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-12-30

After watching Shawshank Redemption I looked everwhere for this recording. This is some of the most emotionaly moving pieces of music I have ever heard. Im a 17 year old guy in a punk rock band, and I cried probably the hardest Ive ever cried in my life when listening to the duettino sull aria. Its one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my entire life. I cant imagine not having it.

Hot off two critical successes (Pride & Prejudice and The Brothers Grimm), Dario Marianelli went all dark and moody with his score for James McTeigue's dystopian thriller V for Vendetta. Marianelli occasionally bursts out with powerful cues such as "Governments Should Be Afraid of Their People," but he mostly focuses on building a sense of pervasive dread and growing tension. Interspersed among his cues are three songs which in the film are part of V's personal jukebox of "forbidden" tunes; all three are intimate and lovely, and it's striking to see how well contemporary artists like Cat Power and Antony & the Johnsons sit next to Julie London's 1950s croon. Finally, many viewers of the movie have been struck by the powerful setting of the final scene to Tchaikovsky's memorable 1812 Overture. It's hard not to be. That piece is actually incorporated in "Knives and Bullets (and Cannons Too)"; the track starts with a nice-enough dramatic build-up by Marianelli, but when the overture (originally written to celebrate the Russian victory against Napoleon's troops) comes in, marking the disc's final two minutes, its sheer power and grandiose bravura make everything that preceded sound diffident. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This CD is great. I highly recommend it as the music is extremely well done.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!...great sounds, great tracks...A Great Soundtrack.......2007-03-09

I've never heard nore bought a soundtrack by Dario before. It was after I saw this movie that I snapped this soundtrack up at once. Like some of the other gere greats the past few years, this comic-book inspired movie has a similar main theme which represents "V" and his will to fight the system. Nat Portman's character has a softer similar sounding theme which is very soft & touching. If anything is better than that...on the last track is the select capture from Tch. 1812 Overture that caps the actual film. GREAT SOUNDTRACK!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent soundtrack from an excellent movie!.......2007-01-19

1 out of 5 stars V for Vendetta.......2007-01-10

I was totally disappointed in the CD. The music choices from the movie were so good, and was looking forward to listening to them; instead I got all the background music. I wish I could return it for a credit - I feel totally ripped off. BEWARE!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid soundtrack.......2007-01-04

I enjoyed this soundtrack immensely, it's one of the few that I keep in my CD player, and MP3 player all the time. The score is one of the better ones, and the songs are great. My only complaint is it's not the entire score or song list.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-07-18

this is a good album. i love the hard hitting guitar, but the lyrics could be a bit more creative.

5 out of 5 stars still one of the best.......2006-08-08

I was greatly saddened to hear the news that the only original member of the band, bassist Dom, had finally left Throwdown to focus on other things. just when the band had finally reached the moment and popularity they had always been struggling for, he decide to leave. Oh well................maybe he'll be back.
Anyway, throwdown have always been one of my favorite bands. Even though i am far from being straight edge, i still enjoy this band greatly. Their music is brutal and powerful, and you can really hear the anger and conviction in singer Dave Peter's vocals.
Musically, this release is a lot more reminiscent of pantera than any of their other releases. Whether dime's passing had something to do with this or not, i dont know. Acually, a long with A perfect Murder's "Strength through Vengeance", "Vendetta" made me sad, cuz it reminded me a little too much of pantera, and what once was, and what will never be again for that band.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant kick in the mouth........2006-05-15

this is gym music. this is ass kicking music. this is getting your head caved in music. this is a vendetta. now kill fred durst! this about as true as it gets for hardcore. honor, pride, and strength. this album is true and solid.

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Weak And Timid.......2006-05-01

If Blink 182 is for you then this band ain't for you. One of the best post-Pantera bands out there. I played this loud and proud while the peace protesters "sashayed" by in Chicago. They scattered like cockroaches when the light are turned on. This band will beat you to the ground and take your girlfriend.

2 out of 5 stars Umm.......2006-02-18

To the guy below: you found this in the "hardcore/punk" section because Throwdown is a hardcore band...

No matter how many mediocre attempts they take at metal, they are always going to be a hardcore band first and foremost.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Surprising!.......2006-11-24

I would strongly recommend this collection to anyone who is seeking a new approach and sound world for these Mozart operas. Ostman opts for brisk tempi and transparent textures, but hardly ever at the expense of characterization or expressivity. The singers respond to the challenge with performances that bristle with excitement and fun. The cast blends with the orchestra like a chamber music ensemble, inspiring the listener to experience the opera as a conversation between the text and the intimations expressed in Mozart's musically and psychologically penetrating orchestration. Occasionally one may miss the lyric line and warmth associated with such great Mozart conductors as Bruno Walter or Karl Bohm; but the brio, virtousity, and brilliant insights of Ostman compensate with different kinds of rewards. Also, there is an intimate atmosphere in these recordings that is most faithful to the ethos and meaning of the libretti themselves. After listening to this period approach, my understanding of Mozart has changed radically, and I continue to relish the challenge that these performances have given to my interpretative sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most thought-provoking recordings ever, combined with some of the most perfect performances I have ever heard........2005-09-14

First of all, I must state first that I was ANXIOUS to write this rave review. Ever since I got these cd's and realized the treause that is to be found in these recordings I just couldn't wait until I'd had the chance to tell everybody else about it... I honestly believe these recordings should be heard by anybody who is interested in this repertoire and music in general, since this are also some of the most perfect pieces of music in the repertoire.

As for the music itself, I am not going to write about. I think it is enough to read my last sentence to realize exactly what I think about it - and it is really just a must. That's composition taken to the highest possible level.

What I do want to write is about the performances.
Arnold Ostman, not the most known figure in the musical world, (not even amongst musicians- I come from Juilliard, and that name is definitely not one everybody knows) has created in the 80's in Mozart the equivalent of what Harnoncourt and Gardiner have done in Bach performance practice, i.e. has totally changed the conecption which was assimilated into everybody's mind regarding notions about how music of that era should sound like.

Trying to create a performance experience which emulates Mozart's period performance practice he changed everything starting from tempos, through ornamentation and of course- the voices themselves.

For us, most people indoctrinated by the post-romantisicm eastablished especially by Herbert von Karajan and the ilks of him, the first initial response will be a shock. The almost imperceptible swift tempos, the small voices etc. are sure to knock over anybody who haven't heard these recordings before. It might create an intial negative response but hang-on there, as the result is so much more gratifying then of hearing a recording of Karajan, Giulini, Furtwangler or any GREAT other conductor from that era- They were obviously incredible musical figures, but in terms of style and total perception of the piece it just doesn't work on the same level, in Mozart of course. (You'd still want to keep your Furtwangler's ninth copy...)

What is so great about Ostman is the freshness of mind with which he walks into every piece. Just like a real iconoclast
it seems as if he has landed from an entire different planet, and is just coming to conduct these pieces and give their debut. I can't give a more sincere and true compliment than that, musically speaking.

The results are the most fresh interpretations up to date of Mozart most important operas which also derive from some of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Under Ostman's direction it seems as though all the singers bloom and give their most musical and inspired performances,
holding on under the swiftest tempos in an admirable way. There is no point in pointing out names because it is as in a rule that the performances are just stellar one by one, even though not carrying around sometimes the most famous names.

This is not to say that all of the recordings in this set are equally perfect, and that I agree to all of the interprations and the insights given by Ostman, but you can't disregard the feeling that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted and executed it almost flawlessly. (the one exception might be small part of Cosi, mainly the overture, which was recorded very early in the stages of period instruments playing- therefore not always as perfect as you would have liked to hear it, but the performance as a whole is still the most beautiful Cosi I know.)

As for the packaging itself: The price is a complete steal, (incredible especially if you order it through other sellers, got mine for about 40$). What you DON'T get are the librettos, so you'd HAVE to get them from a different source. Either a different recording you might have, (you just might want one of the standard reference recordings one usually hears about like Giulini's) or you could just buy the librettos through Amazon, would still cost you very little.

Should not be missed by any terms by anybody who cares for music.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever!!.......2004-01-12

Ostman created a stir when he made these recordings in the 1980s. And now it available in a collectors' edition box. I'm so excited. Sumi Jo's Queen of the Night here is even better than her recording for Solti. Ostman's Don Giovanni is the fastest I've ever heard, not to mention the most exciting. This Cosi Fan Tutte is Gramophone's reference Cosi. And this Figaro has many "alternative" arias that other recordings never bother with. Don't worry, the alternative is at the back so you can program it out. In fact, this is the only set of Mozart operas with ALL the alternative arias available. Even Gardiner does not have some of these. So this is a supreme set of importance.

I cannot recommend this too highly. Exciting performances now available in Decca's collectors' edition.

great album, perfect. too bad the record label sucks, maybe the band would still be around if they got the promotion they deserved. i really want to know what their next album would have sounded like :(

4 out of 5 stars Solid, but far from being something special........2006-10-02

This is another post-hardcore/post-punk/screamy vocals band, and this album is very similar to their last. The one difference is they've improved as songwriters, no doubt due to growing up. This album is really what happens when mediocre teenage songwriters become mediocre young adult songwriters. The songs are distinguishable, but not immediately so. As with most bands in this scene, the best thing they have going for them is the use of catchy melodies, rather than interesting songwriting. The lyrics can border on laughable as well. He spends a lot of time howling about the site of his grave, and the blood someone gave to him, etc. etc. Nevertheless, as a steady improvement over their last album, this one shows decent pop sensibilities, good energy, and has hints of raw talent. If they can make the composition a bit more consistant we should expect better things in the future.

5 out of 5 stars ven red is one of the BEST bands EVER (R.I.P).......2006-08-22

i bought this cd at the concert right when it came out....and even i was skeptical. i didnt think there would be ANY way to top Between the Never and the Now. i was wrong. as much as lovvvvve that cd i think this one is even better. i ve seen a few people ripping on zach for screaming....why? he has f*cking emotion and thats a lot more than a lot of other bands. this music is not like anything ive ever heard. yes in the sense that it has all the basic instruments, it is the same, ok...but the lyrics and zachs amazing vocal range...and the sheer 'catchyness' of the songs will make anyone a fan. and if you dont like them i think you'd be better off not admitting it.

4 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted...........2006-03-22

I've had this album forever and give it a very solid 4 stars (I rarely give anything 5 stars). The main reason I write this review is because of a set of unfortunate circumstances. While VR has put out two great albums to date, this one being their best, it seems as if their record label wasn't so jacked to promote them so....if you didn't already know, Vendetta Red is broken up. Seven years together and they've decided they can't push it much farther, especially with nobody helping them out.

I highly recommend checking this album out, especially since it's the last stuff we'll ever hear from them. The majority of the tracks are above average even though the lyrical content is a bit gruesome. The vocal range of the singer is incredible and the band truly knows how to come up with infectious melodies.

R.I.P. VR (and Finch for that matter, they broke up too, weird)

1 out of 5 stars How do they make violence sound so sterile?.......2006-03-10

My friend loves this cd to death, and made me exchange it for two of my cd's for a weekend (De-Loused in The Comatorium, and In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth... she got the better end of that deal) so I would "love it" too.. nothing could be further from the truth. The song titles and imagery are borderline tongue-in-cheek commentaries about the pervasively false mood of emo.. when in fact, they're part of the herd. The imagery is a complete joke, I'm sure lyrical fragments are already sprouting on MySpace headlines like a fungus. ("When you were laying face down in a pool of blood... you never looked so beautiful." ..are you serious?) The broken sentence-fragment metaphors, insipid similes, and convenient rhymes are right out of a junior high poetry book. The singer's voice is decent, but definitely not anything to write home about. Beyond that, though, and more distubingly, the music is weak up and down this crapfest of a CD. The intro and chorus of Silhouette Serenade would feel perfectly right at home in a Chase Financial commercial, with birds flying in slow motion, Kiefer Sutherland's voice declaring corporations are making life better for you, and so on... vomit. There's no energy, urgency, or real depth to any of the songs, and the whole album really has a mediocre, stagnant, undynamic quality to it. Hell.. even Anberlin's newest album blows this out of the water.

Essentially, if you like lumbering, go-nowhere songs that value production over songwriting, doomed to stand in the shadow of their superiors, get this album. Oh, and then buy everything you can from Evans Blue and From First To Last while you're at it. You deserve it, champ.

This is a dream cast, recorded for posterity. I've seen/heard many productions of Nozze, and have never heard it better.

5 out of 5 stars The best Figaro on record!.......2000-07-27

This is a recording that ranks with the greatest. The sparkling, crisp overture and a remarkable cast, this is one for every classical music lover's library. Solti conducted with his usual unerring command, and you will never hear a better Countess or Figaro than Te Kanawa and Ramey. No one beats von Stade as Cherubino, and Thomas Allen and Lucia Popp as the Count and Susanna are wonderful. Obviously, I can't say enough good things about it. The recit's are stylistically correct, and not under- or over-done, and the arias all seem "right" in tempo, in feel, in motivation. I always feel that this is the realization/interpretation that Wolfgang would have loved.

If you are looking for the best recording of Figaro, stop here!

5 out of 5 stars Great 2nd album from Mic Geronimo.......2007-06-07

I remember when "Nothin Move But The Money" first came out, I was in the 10th grade and it was a hot song, now 10 years later I picked up the album again and I forgot how good it really was. A slept on and under rated MC with a smooth flow, he delivers a very tighht album. Though rather short, at only 12 songs, not one is bad, in fact I'd say 1 is ok, the rest are good, with a few being real good and 1 classic and 1 almost classic. Guests are minimal as well (rapping on 2 songs and doin the hook on 3) , and quite a few grew into some of the bigger names in rap shortly after this album dropped (Jay-Z, LOX, DMX, Ja Rule, and another great but under rated rapper, Tragedy Khadafi). Production is great on almost every song and handled by some bigger names. Irv Gotti & Lil Rob did 2 songs, Puff Daddy, Pete Rock, Buckwild, Prestige, Legendary Traxter, Havoc, K-Def, P & Time, Chrin Lange, Prince Kasan all do 1 song. A must have rap album from an era where rap was still about lyrics and not bling bling and women.

3 out of 5 stars (3+half stars) VENDETTA......return of the natural........2006-05-30

After getting his debut album "the natural" wayback in the day when it 1st came out i was hit with 2 assumptions. 1)That album was laced with alotta hit records and 2)He wouldnt be able to recreate it cuz there were alotta fillers on the debut also so i thought he'd used up whatever he had in the tank in the 1st time round. How wrong i was+unfortunately i slept on this until very recently when i decided to cop it on the cheap. It starts off with 1 of the crossover aimed tracks "nothin move but the money" which was produced by PUFFY and genuinely wasnt as bad as i thought it wouldve been because MIC tears it down with some lovely wordplay. Next is the title track "vendetta", a MOBB DEEP sounding track were Mic flips some warnings to mc's. Then ironically comes "survival" produced by HAVOC from Mobb Deep, a jazzy rugged joint where Mic sounds in his element. Next is the IRV GOTTI produced "life n'lessons", a crossover type joint with a lovely laidback feel to it where Mic is in storytelling mode describing his life. The next joint is a K-DEF (Marly Marl's partner) produced heatrock, guaranteed to make you nod ya head. The next track "street life" is very much a radio filler and "be like mic" has a repetitive boring beat despite some of Mic's best rhyming. Then there's a track from PETE ROCK which i was not expecing at all called "unstoppable" and thats exactly what it is once you put it in your deck. A bone crunching bassline+beat driven track with a delicate piano rift with a touch of jazz mixed with Mic's stellar flow. Then there's 3 reletively forgettable tracks in "single life" (cr*p), "things aint what they used to be" and "how you been?". All 3 have a more r+b influenced vibe rather than a harder rugged edge Mic sonds better on. Finally we're giving "usual suspects" a posse cut with DMX, the LOX and Carl Thomas with a badboy feel. After hearing 2 of his 3 albums i get the impression that this cat makes albums with a handful of excellent str8 up real hiphop tracks mixed with a handful of more laidback radio/r'n'b tracks that kind of take abit away from it. Well worth coping for the variety of the tracks.

4 out of 5 stars I wasnt expecting this.......2005-12-08

I bought this in a Pawn shop and when I lisened 2 it I was like why was this in a pawn shop? This is a good album, but I 4got some people dont know what true hiphop is, like I said true hiphop has feeling and Vendetta does have that feeling! so get this if u r a fan of true hiphop!

4 out of 5 stars a nice surprise .......2005-09-30

i will admit I had not heard any of mic gs stuff but one day I was at the local record store and saw this and decided to listen it turned out to be a very enjoyable listen. Mic g is a very talented lyricist and while his lyrics are not always the best his flow is great and his words are the truth. the beats are dope although sometimes the cheese factor creeps in to the CD but this is forgivable actually most of the album works very well considering that almost all of it was done with a sequencer type device there are a few vinyl samples here and there but for the most part these are electronic sounds not like techno or anything like that but it still works. if you enjoy modern underground Hiphop with a few gangsta touches you will probaly enjoy this also check out Mic G THE NATURAL it is a better album than this 4 MICS

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2005-08-30

Mic Geronimo did an excellent job with this album. Unfortunately, due to the lack of promotion and marketing, this album didn't sold very well. The best songs on the album are "Usual Suspects", "Unstoppable", and "Street Life". Overall, this is a true gem and it always seems that the truly talented get push aside while the untalented ones (Such as Nelly, Lloyd Banks, and Jermaine Dupri) get all the fame and fortune. In conclusion, if you love East Coast Rap, you need get a copy of this, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite enough Rigoletto.......2007-07-11

Julius Rudel perpetuates a heavy, turgid pace with the Philharmonia Orchestra, which is in commendable tune. The opening prelude is especially excellent, with the dreadful opening chords hinting at the mocking jester Rigoletto's pitiable kismet. Alfredo Kraus lacks the dripping sex appeal of Plácido Domingo and the heartiness of Luciano Pavarotti; nonetheless, he depicts a petite, youthful Duca di Mantova, which is not entirely without charm. He juggles "Questa o quella" and "La donne è mobile" with ease, but his most stupendous moments are with Sills in Act I ("È il sol dell'anima") and with the courtiers in Act II ("Possente amor mi chiama"). The late, great Beverly Sills has often been criticized for shrieking her roles, particularly near the latter days of her career. Sills has never shrieked a day in her life; for one to carp Sills thus would be to voraciously lacerate and crucify Maria Callas. However, Sills is, to be fair, not in her prime, but she offers a lovely, if occasionally chirpy, performance as Gilda. Her mature reading of "Caro nome" is charming.

Sherrill Milnes, a denizen of the roles of Amonasro, Giorgio Germont, and other Verdi baritone roles, offers a gruff Rigoletto. His performance of "Cortigiani, vil razza donnata" may leave one slightly disappointed; one should reference his preferable rendition for Richard Bonynge with Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. Samuel Ramey gives a disappointing performance as Sparafucile; the illustrious American bass-baritone might have made an interesting Rigoletto, but the vile assassin Sparafucile is a role sculpted for the likes of Nicolai Ghiaurov, Martti Talvela, and Ivo Vinco. Mignon Dunn is a deplorable Maddalena. She reminds one of a squawking crow trying to sound like a siren; one can now understand the phrase "shockingly horrible." Where is Shirley Verrett? Where is Fiorenza Cossotto?

In short, this is a set of highlights worth having in reference to the price, but Rigoletto is an opera which should be presented in its entirety for any listener to fully enjoy and appreciate.

1 out of 5 stars Old maid, shrieker!.......2004-05-20

This Gilda sounds like an old maid, shrieking her way through Verdi's music. What a disgrace, she sounds like a hag!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Enough Rigoletto When You Think About It.......2003-12-27

This recording, which offers only the highlights from Verdi's dark opera Rigoletto, is a fine studio recording with good singers and good orchestration when you really think about it. It's true that the lead singers are past their primes and their vocals, though well-trained and dramatically convincing, do not pack a punch as good as they used to in their salad days of the 60's. Only Sherril Milnes and Samuel Ramey, both baritones, deliver a noteworthy performance. Samuel Ramey is in fine singing condition and he had only been singing professionally very recently. In fact, if you are a fan of Ramey, this would count as one of his oldest recordings and his voice is superb here. This is a recording dating from 1978. By then, Beverly Sills and Alfredo Kraus were much older (Sills was approaching her fifties and Alfredo Kraus had also past his glory days as tenor) but nonetheless this is a well delivered opera recording as a whole. It can get you interested the entire opera and perhaps when you do buy the whole opera you can get superior singers and a much loved recording. It's a sort of "introduction" to opera. The same can apply to the recordings of "Barber Of Seville" and "La Traviata", also under the baton of maestro Julius Rudel and starring Beverly Sills- which were also made in the late 70's.

The strength of Verdi's Rigoletto lies squarely on its powerful drama. The tragic plot revolves around a court jester (Rigoletto- Milnes) who is employed in the service of an extremely decadent and corrupt Duke (Kraus). The Duke's first aria shows him to be a womanizer (Questo e Quella) along the lines of Don Giovanni. When Rigoletto insults a deformed guest at the Duke's party Monterrone, Rigoletto is cursed. Later, the curse comes into effect when the Duke seduces Rigoletto's daughter Gilda (Sills) only to rape her and toss her aside for his next conquest. When Rigoletto hears of the Duke's awful crime from Gilda herself, he vows revenge. He hires a hit man Sparafucile (Samuel Ramey) who accidentally has Gilda killed instead. The Duke gets away with his awful behavior scot-free and in Rigoletto's last lines he remembers the curse (La Maldizione!). This dark plot was Verdi's newest attempt to provide characters that were neither dark or light, good or bad but falling in a more flawed and human middle ground. Rigoletto inadvertently has killed his own daughter and the evil Duke goes unpunished. It is a character study on the character of Rigoletto- mainly his desire for revenge.

This recording is worth buying. It's an affordable, even budget price and has its moments. For a soon to be 50 Beverly Sills she does manage to pull off an impressive Gilda - frail, innocent and daydreaming of romance. Nowhere is this more vividly expressed than in her aria "Gualter Made". Sills' soaring, light legato is beautiful to hear. Though she is a mature sounding soprano by the time of this recording, she still does a great job, coming into the very same ground that sopranos like June Anderson and even the ultimate diva Maria Callas walked- both Anderson and Callas sang Gilda, even if the role is calling for a vulnerable, teenage-sounding kind of soprano, All in all a great recording. And Julius Rudel conducts with superb aplomb...especially noteworthy is the exchange of recitatives between Milnes and Ramey early in the opera which is underscored by strings. And the finale is to die for.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2002-02-17

This Rigoletto is absolutely wonderful. Rudel conducted firmly but not magnificently, but the cast is magnificent. Milnes (also the title role in the Rigoletto with Sutherland and Pavarotti) is the best ever, no doubt. Always touching and powerful, his acting is amazing (if only there was a Milnes/Callas version!) and his screams of "Gilda! Gilda!" are unrivalled. Alfredo Kraus isn't an incredible actor but his creamy, youthful tone is perfect with the added bonus of a high D in "Possente amor." (Only Pavarotti, by the way, attempted this on any of the recordings I've heard - Domingo, di Stefano, and del Monaco are among those that cut the aria or went for the lower note.) Sills is an extremely convincing Gilda even if, at times, like Callas and Sutherland, she sounds too mature. If you want an incredible Rigoletto and duke, go for this. Gilda . . . well, Sills is great but I prefer Cotrubas or Gueden.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful cast.......2001-10-13

This 1978 studio recording of Rigoletto stars a cast that brings energy and life into all its wonderful music. I have to admit that Beverly Sills's vioce is getting a little old here, in fact she is way past her prime, she doesn't have that signature endless top range. That said she pulls off a Gilda very close to that of Callas and Anderson. Kraus is in a role that he was born to play, his vioce is on top form here with all the sparkle of incredible tops c's. Then there is Milnes who turns a Rigoletto that is yet to be matched. His vioce brings up all the anger and rage that Gobbi brought to this charater years before. This set is a wonderful deal, great music at a great price.
