Somewhere along their musical path, Def Leppard shed their raw, youthful rock aggression and became a pop band. Their new direction, beginning with Pyromania and continuing with Hysteria and Adrenalize, was a complete departure from their earlier, stripped-down, AC/DCish approach, and it vaulted them to mega-stardom. Slang is their first record without producer "Mutt" Lange since their debut, On Through the Night. The good news is that it's a much more organic, less overproduced record than they would have made with Lange, but it's still more pop than hard rock. Dance beats and funky riffs, with no shortage of slower power ballads, sum up this record pretty thoroughly. The single "Work It Out" has a nice strong chorus (with almost Sebadoh-like harmonies) and is certainly less bombastic than past hits like "Pour Some Sugar on Me." Def Leppard have long since abandoned their heavy metal roots, but with Slang they've at least moved away from the studio dominance of Lange, and that's a step in the right direction. --Adem Tepedelen
Customer Reviews:
We must all grow up!.......2007-07-25
I know that this album does not sound like pyromania or hysteria, but we must all know when to grow up and move on. Def Leppard did with this album and they showed that singing about adult stuff is much more interesting than "having you dad tell you to mow the lawn"! This album is emotional and deep when it comes to writing of the lyrics. Yes, this album does not have the crunch crunch of pyromania or High n dry, but the lyrics do pack a serious punch. It was time for them to change because Adrenalize was a big mistake and even if that album did sell 6 million copies and had five hits, it was still a bad album. Slang is a must for any DL collection or if your into emo music, this would be right up that alley.
Lets get, lets get, lets get, lets get grunge...........2007-04-23
By this stage of their illustrious career Def Leppard were bandwagon jumpers of the worst kind, that being that instead of merely genre jumping they were genre jumping and doing the new genre badly. Not only does this album betray a band desperately trying to stave off irrelevance to the hard rock world but also a band with precious few ideas at this point.
It's not all bad news however and in fairness there are some high points. So in point form;
- Flagship cut/title track/lead single Slang is an excellent piece of hard rock fluff. Top stuff from a band of hard rock veterans who showed their fun side in teh video for the same song, which was unfairly ignored by MTV due to grunge and alterna-rock swamping the airwaves.
- Gutless ballads like All I Want is Everything generally do the band no favours. It's not a band song in itself, but is the best example of what was otherwise wrong with this band circa '96.
- Semi alternative, muddied arrangements, conversely produced cleanly (no I can't explain that). But the issue is that this album is seeped in pointless affectations doubly stupid given that by '96 grunge was already merely a genre with the hard rock world (though the majors were still in denial over this) and trying to put out an album so heavily influenced by such a sub genre was a painfully bad thing to do.
- This album cam with some limited edition attachments in some territories. Mine has some acoustic versions of various Lep tunes. Except for mega hardcored completists these acoustic tracks don't add up to much.
All up a disappointing addition to the often sparkling Lep catalogue, leaving their legacy looking fairly shaky and embarrassing.
A departure, but in a good way .......2007-04-20
Some DL fans hate this album because it's such a departure from their normal grinding rock, but this band is nothing if not adaptable - and this grunge-y, dark sound is what was saturating the airwaves at the time. I think 'Slang' is terrific, and quite a bit better than a lot of the stuff that was out there. It should have gotten far more airplay and publicity than it did. Oodles of bands come and go, but the phenomenal talent in DL is what keeps them ahead of the curve and in the game.
Ok album.......2007-03-14
I enjoyed this album. There were a few weird tracks, but other than that, it wasnt that bad. Too bad this album didnt get aired on the radio, i believe they would of had a few hits. If your a def leppard fan, dont miss out on this album.
Def Leppard-Slang.......2007-01-24
This is one great cd by Def Leppard. If a hard core Def Leppard fan, this will be one of your favoriates in your collection.

Album Description
Slang sets off on another sonic adventure with More Talk About Tonight, the second release from the critically-acclaimed alliance, in stores August 17th (Terminus Records). Filled with sophisticated arrangements and free improvisations, the album is both indefinably modern and reassuringly classic at the same time, as if the duo in charge (Layng Martine III and Dave Schools) were equally as influenced by Herbie Hancock as Brian Eno. They pilfer freely from abstract rock, alternative jazz and electronica, and the result is nothing short of beautiful cacophony.
For More Talk About Tonight, Martine began by tracking the improvisational threads that developed out of the recording process when he gathered the "core band": bassist Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), drummer Matt Abts (Gov't Mule), keyboardist Ray Packzkowski (Trey Anastasio, Viperhouse) and guitarist/special effects master Knox Chandler (The Golden Palominos). More Talk About Tonight plays like a night at a post-apocalyptic speakeasy, with friends like Vic Chesnutt, DJ Logic (Medski, Martin & Wood), Lori Carson (The Golden Palominos), Eric McFadden (George Clinton), Paul Pimsler, Jay Rodriguez (Groove Collective), and others occasionally stepping up onstage to join Martine and Schools for a song or two before disappearing back into the smoke-filled room. More Talk About Tonight weaves a brilliant soundscape brimming with abstract imagery and atmosphere.
Customer Reviews:
more talk about tonight.......2004-10-07
if you dig the bellwether project, this album is more of that same jive...it definately does not have the recognition is deserves. more talk about tonight incorporates alot more turntables, and every track is very unique and very funky. it's simple, buy this album.
A Must Buy!!!.......2004-08-17
I feel this album is at least five times better than their debut record, The Bellwether Project. Layng Martine and Dave Schools really break through with a eclectic group of musicians comprised of DJ Logic, Eric McFadden, Matt Abts, Vic Chestnutt and a lot more. With so many players with a wide range of style keeps this record changing ever so often to where it pleases almost all musical tastes. (...)

Hole guitarist, Eric Erlandson, compiled this rare and unreleased material from the early days. You get the band's first sandblasted recording, 'Turpentine' (previously unreleased), their first three singles (nothing to brag about), an unreleased demo of 'Miss World', 'Old Age' and three unreleased tracks, including a stark cover of Donovan's 'Season of the Witch'! This rarities collection serves as a reminder of Hole's screechy invective.

After Zion I's original label folded, Zion and Amp Live took their album back to the lab and retooled it. The initial misfortune turned out to be an auspicious opportunity as DeepWater Slang 2.0 benefits from the second pass. A diverse, broad album that's as much for thinkers as it is for rump shakers, Slang is more evidence that Zion I is helping to take charge of a Bay Area underground scene that's been wayward of late. Amp's tracks perfect a malleable sound that can be organic one moment, spacey the next, and then slam it back to concrete afterwards. Zion is similarly versatile, bringing an intelligent, expansive worldview to his songwriting. The group keeps it refreshingly light on cameos, including Pep Love on "Warrior Dance" and L.A. wordsmith Aceyalone on "Cheeba Cheeba." Zion I gets deep--not to drown you, but to immerse you in their vibe. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
The No-Cal-based underground hip-hop duo's sophomore effort. 15 tracks including the first single, 'Cheeba Cheeba', featuring Aceyalone. Raptivism. 2002.

Another Excellent Album From Oaktown (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-03-22
Zion I is a group that I've been sleeping on for some time. I really didn't get into them until their 2005 album "True & Livin'" which was dope. This album "Deep Water Slang V 2.0" is a great album as well. Amp Live's production and Zion's rhymes do fit perfectly into the CD. The lyrics on here are consistant and fresh sounding, something that is starting to lack in Oaktown.
The best part of the album is when Amp Live slows his production down. Songs like "Flow" with Grouch and "Finger Paint" with Susie Suh and Dust. Some of Amp's beats are kind of bouncy which are real hard for me to adjust to, but are still nice. "Warrior Dance" with Pep Love is a up beat song that I like. Even though the upbeat production takes a minute to get used to, Zion's lyrics hold things down.
This a real nice album comming from the duo Zion I. If you like hip hop with a different taste, then this album would be good for you to take a listen to. I find this album to vibe almost perfectly. This album is out of print, but I've been seeing it in many stores still for about $14 (well at least here in ATL), so I recommend that you search around for this album before you purchase it here for a high price. Once again Oaktown puts up another great album.

Audible Stress Relief {5 Stars}.......2007-01-25
Whenever I listen to this album, I always end up in a better mood no matter what is troubling me. Whether you're cruising on a sunny Saturday afternoon, grilling in the backyard, or lounging wherever you may be, this album will make for an excellent backdrop to do it to. This album just feels right. I mean, words don't really do it justice. I can't describe to you what the vibes contained on this disc are like. It's something that you have to experience yourself. It's a shame that albums like this don't get spins on radio. In fact, it's a cryin' shame.
Forget about flaws. There are none on this album. Amp Live's beats are simply too unique to compare to anyone else and Zion rocks every last one of Amp's creations with ease and precision. I don't normally recommend buying overpriced albums, but this album is probably worth the $35 price tag that you see above. I know I'd pay it if I didn't already have this album.
Just press play and let Zion I do the rest. The beats on this album are unique, relaxing, and refreshing. The lyrics are the perfect blend of concious raps and Cali swagger. I can't really say much more than that because I'm still at a loss for words five years after its release. Get your hands on it any way you can. Even if you have to download it, because you're going to end up buying it anyway. It's that good.
Standout Tracks: Every song on the album is excellent
Deep Water Slang.......2006-10-11
4 years ago I was introduced to this... ZION I's 2nd LP, by a friend who had recommended it to me. Though I really enjoyed the listen for its unique sound and tight flows I haven't had the chance to really appreciate how good this was until now. I keep this and their first in heavy rotation every weekend. I can't stop playin this shhh... So, don't sleep on it go out and support it. Peace
Something new.......2006-06-21
I just got turned onto these guys, and I've liked pretty much every track I've heard. They have a very original sound. The beats are great, and it's been good listening for the car, gym, etc.
Futuristic Hiphop from Cali duo.......2005-01-13
The combo of MC Zion and producer Amp-Live prove to be one of the best kept secrets outside of California. I was brought to attention of this group when they recently competed in an MTV2 battle-of-the-bands type program. This is their only album I have at the moment, their debut "Mind Over Matter," which is ranked highly, is out-of-print I believe. But this one was very satisfying.
I believe that Amp-Live MAKES this album. He has to be one of the best producers today. He likes to use a lot of guitar, and plenty other live instruments(sometimes done by himself or Zion). This album is full of spacey, serene, melodic, and most importantly futuristic soundscapes. These beats, along with Zion's rhymes, truly feel like your witnessing the future of Hiphop! Zion may not be the best emcee I've heard, but he's more than capable to be Amp's sidekick. Maybe he's just too abstract for my comprehension. Zion can go conscious, political, spiritual, and definetly funky on any given track, so he does not bog this album down at all. It's just that Amp and his beats are the main attraction. Yes, Zion does have a weird, some say even an annoying voice. I think having a distinguishable and unique voice is an asset to an MC in most cases, and Zion's higher-pitced "little-kid voice" eventually hits you as an asset to their music.
Amp-Live gets three tracks to himself, without any rhymes: the intro "Jahmbo," the title track, and the cool "Kick Snare," with Killa Kela beatboxing(I seriously thought it was Biz Markie). One of the singles "The Drill" is the first song with the two, and should grow on you, especially the second(and last) verse. Tracks 3-6 are definitely the meat of this album. Especially "Finger Paint"(ft. Dust) and "Flow,"(ft. The Grouch) both with have serene and awesome beats with solid rhymes as well. These two just might be the two best of the album. "Warriors Dance"(ft. Pep Love) is a club-type song for the thinkers, if that makes any sense, and has just an outstanding beat. I actually think Pep Love outshines Zion on this track, but they both kick it. "Kharma" is one of my favorites too, and Zion does a little crooning on this one with an insightful message. "A.E.I.O.U." is probably my least favorite track off "Deep Water Slang." It more of a club track too where Zion waters down the lyrics, but it's too short to turn anyone off.
Before you know it, you get to the single and old-school throwback "Cheeba Cheeba" with Hiphop legend and fellow-Californian Aceyalone rockin' it with Zion. This is easily of of my favorite songs here, with Acey one of my personal favs who's rhyming like we haven't heard him in years, and the only flaw of it is the hook. The last five round the album out nicely, but aren't as memorable as the main part of the disc. You have "Sorry" where Zion is sincerely repenting for his wrongdoings and one of Amp's most memorable melodic beats. "Le Le Le"(w/ Dust & Deuce Eclipse) is upbeat and had an annoying chorus at first. Then I found out it was from an African tribal chant, and that turned it around into a good song. I mean, how often do you hear a hook like: "If you really love your mama say Le, Le, Le!"? "Boom Bip" is a slower track with Goapele singing, it's okay but not memorable. "Mind Blow" is hit-or-miss. I'm feelin' it, it's really different and authentic, and kind of a change-of-pace in this album. "Dune" finishes it up, where Zion is speaking in a distorted voice. This track is good, but Zion uncharacteristically says something about giving a girl ecstacy and watching her go insane. ??? Actually, there is a short bonus track "One More Thing"(which is track 31) feat. Suzie Suh that is decent, but "Rock Y'all"(track 34) is really good where Zion gets fiery and political and this is the official end of the album.
This album is consistent, has top-notch beats, great rhymes, and is worth your time. Check it out to witness the future of Hiphop! Everything about it is futuristic. Zion's lyrics are rooted in the old-school, no doubt, but he along with Amp-Live are able to take us to the future of Hiphop and music! I think even rock fans could listen to this and like it, but it's definitely for all you Heads out there. Support these guys, let's hope to keep hearing from them long into the future. I think they have an album coming out this Spring...
