5 out of 5 stars amazing album.......2007-07-23

this is an amazing album both musically and in guitar virtuosity. i love the idea of shred in a classical foundation, and malmsteen knows how to pull it off beautifully!

5 out of 5 stars Shredding for Shredding Sake.......2007-05-05

When this record came out I am proud to say I already knew two things. 1. Who Yngwie Malmsteen was. 2. How to pronounce his name - at least I think I knew that - all because of the mid 80's radio show "Metal Shop". Rising Force is one of those albums that I am glad I am reviewing 20 + years later than right after I bought it. Mainly because my opinion has changed very little. This was killer back then and it remains so to this day. I never cared much for the two tracks with vocals but the instrumentals are phenomenal. This record is everything that was good about 80's metal - it is a fine example of the self-indulgence guitar style of the era but with remarkable musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars This set a standard.......2007-03-17

There was not a guitar player on the face of the GLOBE that didn't sit up and take notice when this was released 20+ years ago . No other guitar player is this fast and this clean . His use of baroque chord structures had never been done before . If you think you are a good guitar player , try this . The only weak spot is the pedestrian ( even by heavy metal standards ) lyrics . This is a landmark release .

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not Malmsteen's best shredding.......2007-02-13

I would consider myself a casual fan of Yngwie, and guitar shredders rarely make it into my CD collection at all. Rising Force contains some quality playing and interesting song structures, but I feel that it is artistically dated at this point. Yngwie became a much better player in later years, and seeing him in the G3 DVD was mind-blowing. Going from that to Rising Force made it easy to see his improvement. The album is a classic for guitarists, but the guitar work is clearly not up to par with Malmsteen's more recent material (which is really a good thing when you think about it). Also, the production seems rather mediocre and muffled, making the potentially exciting songs sound dead. Basically, if you're a big Yngwie fan, you'll want it, but if you just want to hear some amazing playing, go for his stuff at G3 instead.

5 out of 5 stars The one that blew down the doors for neoclassical metal!.......2007-01-31

If you're a guitar nut, you should own this, PERIOD. It's the album that opened the door for a flood of characters like Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, and a host of others.

Nonetheless, I'd like to point out a difference between a "door opener" and an "influence." Many reviews here credit Yngwie as a major influence on guys like Satch, Vai, Gilbert, V. Moore, Macalpine, Petrucci, Becker, Friedman, etc... and from that list, I can give you relative youngsters like Becker and Friedman, but c'mon folks: everybody else on that list had already been honing their chops for years: their influences were the same as Yngwie's: Paganini, Mozart, Bach, etc... what Yngwie did for them is OPEN THE DOOR, and in some cases like Vai and Satch, their sound is more reminiscent of Van Halen than anything else, anyway: I'm not really certain YJM had much influence on them at all.

So... yes: this is the apotheosis of neo-classical shred guitar. Not only should you own it for posterity's sake, but also because "Black Star", "Far Beyond the Sun", and "Icarus Dream Suite op. 4" are all right up there with any neo-classical recordings ever made: at least one of them should be on your regular guitar-oriented playlist from here on out.

Yngwie ripping and shredding! All songs are well thought out, and all musicians on this album are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Best Malmsteen vocal album........2006-12-18

Following his successful release of the grammy nominated self titled "Rising Force" instrumental album in 1984 (which garnered him "neo-classical guitar god" by the way), within a year later and with the same line-up in addition to the drummer that replaced Barriemore Barlow (the greatest rock drummer England ever produced), Yngwie is set to debut Rising Force's best full blown vocal album "Marching Out". This ground-breaking album features not only his signature awe-inspiring guitar work but also his songwriting showmanship. For those of you whom still demanded Malmsteen's classic guitar work aside from J.S. Soto's growling vocals, crank up your volume knob on the tracks "I'll See The Light Tonight"; the classically intro and to the full blown guitar riffs/solos on "Disciples Of Hell", "I Am A Viking" and the dark, melodic instrumental piece to "Overture 1383". This is a no nonsense head-banging heavy metal album in its day and considered by many to be one of the most important and influential albums to date. Truly the best [early] Malmsteen vocal album.

5 out of 5 stars Malmsteen Left its Mark.......2006-10-30

One of the must have CDs of Yngwie Malmsteen. Amazing solos and compositions.

Favourite Tracks: "I'll see the light tonight", "Disciples of Hell", "Soldier Without Faith", "Overture", "Marching Out" & practically everything

Almost 100% Perfect Listening...

Please take a notice that music is evolving. The future was shaping and taking the form of a name of a brilliant artist. The name of SHAWN LANE..

Don't you know him? Don't worry, neither i was aware of him (I am a Malmsteen aficionado since 1988!) This year and after his premature death his music came into my life and shocked me!

Exotic Scales @ hyperspeed & brilliant arpeggios make Yngwie a Top-Shredder for sure. But if one can (could play) fastest and more lyrical & difficult parts on the guitar this would be SHAWN LANE (+RIP)
Let me remind you that Yngwie uses economy picking, Shawn Lane had been alternate picking almost every note. Check him on youtube. SHAWN's solo cannot be played by any Yngwie.I have heard that Shawn had reached 18 notes/sec! Too bad he's gone. He had so much to give. RIR SHAWN

5 out of 5 stars Stunning realisation of Yngwies early talent.......2006-08-15

Malmsteens famous ego once made his mouth say these immortal words - "Anyone who denies I started a new way of playing guitar, is just lying". And you know what? He's kind of telling the truth. But that doesn't make it OK to go around saying it! Such statements can only be backed up by blinding excellence over a long period. Yngwie had the brilliance, but it only lasted a few albums before starting to dissipate due to a shallow creative well.

Regardless, it has to be said that had he continued to produce albums of this stellar quality his ego may have been justified. For stellar it is. An album of near metallic perfection marred by only a couple of tracks that over the years I've come to resent somewhat for blighting this masterpiece.

And masterpiece it is. OK the dil intro was a pain in the old days of cassettes - cos you'd fast forward past it but once you get past that thing then things improve markedly. Truth be told, I'd often fast forward past the first two proper tracks as well, I'll See the Light Tonight and Don't Let it End not quite floating my boat despite their hearfelt longing mixed with heroic metal bombast. No fols, what I wanted was to be found on tracks four onwards.

Disciples of Hell and I Am A Viking are sort of prototype power metal. Bombastic, passionate and fiercely talented heavy rockers and this sort of stuff must of primed so many of the power metal bands that came pouring out of Europe 10-12 years later. The mental imagery these two tracks evoke is spot on for the genre and Jeff Scott Sotos' vocals are magnificent. The instrumental Overture 1383 is a somewhat welcome breather before the listener plunges into the meat of what was originally side 2.

The full metal racket of heroic sytled metal of Anguish and Fear, On the Run Again, Soldier Without Faith and Caught in the Middle capture perfectly the zeitgeist of this form of foot to the floor metal. Yngwie on this album setting forth a histrionic guitar blueprint that so many others followed. Sometimes it feels like every European guitarist from '85 onwards felt obliged to give a passing nod to his fiery fretburning style. But the important aspect which shouldn't be forgotten is that these are proper songs, not just excuses for the next solo. The whole thing is closed out by the instrumental title track, easing the listening down from the whole experience.

A fiercely individual work, Yngwie barely acknowledging the outside world, putting forth his vision which at the time was almost 100% undiluted by commercial concerns. The sort of album that is hiding somewhere in almost every euro metalheads collection and the collections of many heavy rock fans around the world. A quality buy which, along with Trilogy, would be my personal recommendation for any Yngwie newcomer who wanted to see just how influential this guy was. Marching Out would slhow the metal side of the guy while Trilogy the more hard rock/goth metal side of the show.

Unreservedly recommended stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Semi-Loser Song Here.......2006-02-27

The WAY too Def Leppard-ian "On the Run Again" ,despite the typically brilliant guitar solo, is the only song here that's not worthy of Classic designation.
I wanted to start this review out calling this album Yngwie Malmsteen's Rainbow, but that honour goes to Ybgwie's effort with Alcatrazz, which I feel is probably a better overall effort. Yngwie, by Marching Out, had started writing ALL the parts in practically all of the songs he played on, and I feel that this approach led to his eventual downfall songwriting wise. Jeff Scott Soto is a fantastic singer, and a good songwriter as well, but it's obvious here that Yngwie was about as intrusive idea-wise as possible. This approach of his markedly lowered his next album, Trilogy, in quality (though on an instrumental level that disc is practically flawless). It took Joe Lynn Turner's help for Yngwie to have any impact at all (songwriting-wise) on his last arguably significant, Rock-based, album, Odyssey.

On this effort, such excellent songs as I am a Viking probably would have benefitted with Jeff's lyrical input; the lyrical variable as it was ended up extremely poor on Yngwie's part. In other words, one has to make sure to not look TOO closely at the lyrics on the abovementoned song to really enjoy it. Otherwise it's certainly one of the best of the '80's and would have fit with the best on such an outstanding Classic as Dio's Holy Diver quite well. I would daresay that Soldier Without Faith, I'll See The Light Tonight, and Disciples of Hell qualify similarly. Terrific songs with plenty of imagination fueling them.

Otherwise, anyone who gets off on a hyper-steroided version of Coverdale/Hughes Deep Purple, and especially Dio/Bonnet fronted Rainbow, will worship this album. BUY!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Melodic Metal albums.......2007-02-16

Sure this is much more commercial than Marching Out, but several other reviewers fail to note that 'Trilogy' was very keyboard oriented and bridged the gap between 'Marching Out' and 'Odyssey'. Yngwie was changing his sound to fit the times and cranked out one serious masterpiece!

Joe Lynn Turner sounds absolutely amazing and Yngwie's playing is flawless. These are some excellent, hook-laden melodic rock tunes that need to be heard. I should also mention that the production on this album was heads and shoulders above the previous 3 albums!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - the first shakes of the Malsteen mission.......2006-08-15

Odyssey is a strange twist of an album. It always felt to me that this album had tracks that suited the excellent Trilogy (Rising Force, Riot in the Dungeons, Crystal Ball) and others that seemed totally out of place such as the excremental Heaven Tonight.

Had Malmsteens next album been comprised of rock of the likes of Hold On and Dreaming (Tell Me) this album could of been viewed as a transition, yet the studio LP that followed was Eclipse which was a very mainstream rock album, not at all like the weird time signatures of Hold On or the overly keyboard heavy Deja Vu and Crystal Ball. Which makes this album sort of stand out as out of synch with what followed and what came after.

This album - featuring the much maligned Joe Lynn Turner on vox - is NOT the place for the newcomer to start on their Yngwie collection. It is for those who tried and liked Trilogy and Marching Out and Eclipse and want to explore further. For fans there are some gems here, such as the aforementioned Riot in the Dungeons and the great album.gig opener Rising Force and the often overlooked Faster than the Speed of Light. The latter track flying pell-mell to it's conclusion, full of firey vocals and great guitar work. There are also a couple of worthwhile instrumentals hera nd the production by Malmsteen and Jeff Glixman is bright and sparkly - no return to the slightly broody production of Marching Out. A flawed album not without it's high points.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful metal.......2006-05-06

Odyssey and Marching Out tie for the best Malmsteen albums. I like Odyssey for the catchy, melodic songs that just keep begging to be played over and over. Marching Out was a metal slaughter-fest that just plain rocked.

Although a little cheesy in places, Odyssey is just fun to listen to. So many memorable lyrics and great riffs, I just wish the lyrics could have been a little stronger. And the sound quality is superb. Only two other CDs seem as crisp and clear to me: Metallica's "Garage, Inc." and Candlemass's self-titled album. Every note comes through perfectly and the music sounds "full" and complete. This CD wraps you in sound. Very nice.

Every song on Odyssey is a masterpiece. Even the slow, thoughtful songs still sound "heavy" enough, but the music is emotionally moving at the same time. And Joe Lynn Turner is at his best on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Commercial, yes, but a masterpiece anyways........2006-04-21

This album arguably showcases Yngwie at the peak of his songwriting skills. Having shared the pen here with the gifted singer Joe Lynn Turner, the final result is a perfect mix of neoclassic-flavored shredding and soaring-but-radio-friendly melodic vocal lines. These are all great songs, whether you play them with a full backing band (like in the album) or just with a poor acoustic guitar. I guess that's what makes this album so transcendent to my ears: the songs in there stand on their own, no matter how they're played, and that certainly is a big plus.

In fact, what I like the most from this album is what many hardcore fans seem to hate. First of all, the change in style is a total success from a musical point of view, even if it's true that there's an explicit commercial intention. Secondly, Joe Lynn Turner does sound mellow, but he adds a lot of value to Malmsteen's music. Turner's perfect intonation and well-controlled voice is a present to anyone's ears. In addition, his huge range, expressiveness and beautiful tone are top notch. I list him in my top five vocalists of all times, really. Take for example the power ballad "Dreaming". Yeah, that's a love song and everything but... do you want a better example of "baroque & roll with tears"? Both Turner and Malmsteen gave the best from them on that song! Also listen carefully to "Hold On" - admittedly a very AOR theme. Do you want a better performance than *that*? Or take a look to the big arena rock airs on both "Heaven Tonight" and "Now is the Time". Ok, they sound tamed as hell, I agree... but you can't deny those also are two perfectly crafted pieces of music, aren't they? And all that is in big part possible thanks to the wonderful pipes of Joe Lynn Turner!

Anyway, if you liked "Marching Out" and "Trilogy" I don't think you should complain neither. There's also some material here for fans of the "more traditional" Yngwie - it's a commercial release, so it targets every taste, right? ;-) Thus, the opening "Rising Force" with its syncopated riffing, its power-metal-influenced melody and its frantic soloing is perhaps the perfect example of good old Malmsteen. Also "Riot in the Dungeons" sounds like the original Malmsteen we all love, as well as "Faster than the Speed of Light" and "Deja Vu" - though at a lesser degree in the later.

One thing is certainly missing in this album: a good instrumental. "Bite the Bullet" does show Malmsteen amazing tone and technique, but it's too short; and "Krakatau" lacks of melodic hooks, it's too thrashy, too rhythmic; and the solos sound like pure jam - amazing solos, yes, but they sound like completely self-complacent jamming. However, overall this is a masterfully interpreted and conceived release. It is the first time (in my records) that Yngwie dared to show us a slightly different side of his musical geniality. It was the first time he demonstrated he could evolve, perhaps thanks to the teamwork with Turner. That reason instantly takes a bow from me. It sincerely think "Odyssey" is the most refined and mature release from Yngwie Malmsteen, and that's why I give five stars to it. So, go for the most criminally underrated of all Malmsteen albums and give it a good try with wide open ears. I'm sure you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Legends arn't born every day.......2006-03-26

Yngwie Malmsteen had suffered an injury to his picking hand when he crashed his farrari, and also found out some record executives had swindled him bigtime. Fans wern't sure if his next album would hold up in the guitar god technique department... but the rest is history. This album blows flames out of the sides when you open it. The singer is the best ever, the keyboardist and drummer are twin brothers and Malmsteens chops and tone are holding the metal scene hostage with lethal weapons. He slaughters naysayers and burys them with taste. This is a five star neo classical extraviganza!!!

Album Description

Neo-classical rock guitar legend Yngwie J. Malmsteen returns with Rising Force with Unleash The Fury, a guitar shredder's dream album! From the opening riff of "Locked & Loaded" to the 4 instrumental numbers, Malmsteen and Rising Force (Dougie White - Vocals, Patrick Johansson - Drums, Joakim Svalberg - Keyboards), produce an album that excels in every facet of musicianship. Two of the instrumentals ("Fuguetta" and "Paraphrase") are both variations of themes composed by Bach, while "Cherokee Warrior" allows Malmsteen to show off his vocal talents as well.

A former member of Steeler and Alcatrazz, Yngwie J. Malmsteen turned the music world on its heads when his Rising Force album was released in 1984. The album hit #60 on the Billboard charts and earned him a Grammy® nomination. His next album Trilogy would continue to showcase Malmsteen's high standard of excellence, which continues to this day.

Yngwie J. Malmsteen is one of rock's greatest guitar heroes. He continues to be a featured draw in every guitar-oriented magazine on the planet. With a mix of technical playing, appreciation for classical composers, and hard rock edginess, Malmsteen is one of the most respected players around. He performed in the G3 tour in 2003 with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

5 out of 5 stars Unleash the Fury - Ingwie Malmsteen.......2007-03-15

Ingwie Malmsteen is one of the best hardrock guitar player.
Phantastic technic and music quality! Me like very.

5 out of 5 stars His best metal CD to date.......2007-03-08

Not one bad song. Not one cheesy ballad. Just pure metal and pure Yngwie.

3 out of 5 stars A surprise (almost) return to form.......2006-11-16

OK I gotta admit, the level of expectation for this album even from long timr devotees such as myself was tiny. And at the time of this albums release (2005) Yngwie had all the profile of an ant on the metal scene radar. But this album ain't half bad. Sure, after the horrific tryptych of Alchemy, War to End All Wars and the abominable Attack! the sound of a surgeon sawing your leg off would probably sound OK, but this album starts to recall the mid to late 90's second purple patch for the Swedish fretboard burner.

The opener Locked and Loaded (rips live by the way) gets down to business with few prissy pretensions and the second tune of Revolution is also a bonafide rocker. In fact this album is a touch like Attack! in that the majority of the songs are straight ahead rockers. Except the quality here is a vast improvement. And Yngwies production job is more in the mid spectrum of the sound range which means not everything is high pitched white noise which is an impression that's stuck in my mind in regards to War to End All Wars.

Other points to consider are the 18 tracks which would normally stunt an album but the feel of this album isn't half bad. It doesn't feel plodding when you listen to it from end to end. A few obligatory instrumentals do help to break things up a little though none of those here really grabbed me. I'd far prefer to the rockin' tune Cracking the Whip than yet another pretentious solo with a latin/muso name like Fuguetta.

Still playing wise the guy still has it and here there is a real sense of passion and urgency on this disc that has been missing from some of his recent albums. And some of the tunes do show some mobility, for example Winds of War (Invasion) which has a start reminiscent of the ballad come rocker Final Curtain from the Fire & Ice album only to swerve into a slow and weighty rocker. A number of other tracks here are also heavied up by being slowed down - not that it works for all the tracks it's tried on but this is something Yngwie has started to do a little more so it's nice to see some belated development from the guy.

Lyric wise this is the same sort of stuff Yngwie always blathers on about. Cold Scandinavian concerts totally in keeping with his history and gothic leanings. Though at least by not dealing much with issues or real life he can't exactly date, though there is some loss of human connectivity with such an approach.

I like this album. Can't give it more than three stars though as it IS a touch naff lyrically in places, slightly overlong and he hasn't gotten fully into stride again but for longtime fans or lapsed fans this is a good buy.

By the way - the enhanced section of this CD isn't much to write home about. Get yourself one of his tutorial videos for greater insight. But at least he's trying to add a little extra value and keep currenty.

And Yngwies band this week - Dougie White on vox here sounding vastly more comfortable and part of the team, Joakim Svalberg (keys) and Patrick Johansson (D).

3 out of 5 stars Really Just More Of The Same.......2006-11-08

I cut my teeth technically as a guitar player on the Rising Force and Marching Out albums so I'll always have respect for Yngwie for giving us those 2 albums. At that time his technical ability and style were novel and us guitarists took note. However, I agree with most of the lukewarm reviews here. Yngwie does recycle the same old diminished runs, harmonic minors runs and scalar patterns over and over and has done so on every album since those 2 aforementioned. It would be refreshing to hear him do some soloing in a major key for instance...I know he can do it...he almost never does though. This style of music needs to have alot of refreshing nuance, tempo changes, and scale variations and arpeggios to be interesting...Yngwie doesnt seem to want to explore new musical areas...he needs too...Having said that this album isnt horrible...its simply just more of the same.

5 out of 5 stars Muy parecido a los discos ochenteros.......2006-08-21

Tambien recomiendo Attack!!! y Concerto with electric guitar in E flat minor

1 out of 5 stars Album is great, actually one of Yngwie's best, but the mix and production are the worst ever!!!.......2007-04-24

I love the songs on this. Yngwie's playing is great as well. However, the mix and production are the worst of any CD I've ever heard. What the heck is wrong with Yngwie on this?

2 out of 5 stars War would probably be more fun than this album.......2006-08-21

Man, the adjectives just come flowing out of me in relation to this album. So many in fact that I think I'm gonna do a little dictionary kinda thang here. I'm going to put down a descriptive word and give you it's special meaning in relation to this album:

Ridiculous - Booklet art. I mean look at the back cover. There is a picture of a suit of armour with Yngwies head superimposed over it. Or did he actually dress up like this.

Pompous - The other photos - the guy smiles in a total of one of them, in all the others he's got this studied look and in one he's got a sword in one hand and a guitar in the other. Is he trying to be Rhapsody?

Neoclassical - If you don't know what this means your reading the wrong review. For those in the know, yep this is more of the same in the very worst possible sense.

One dimensional - OK that's cheating cos it's two words. But it sums up this album - it's full of neoclassical runs for the sake of it without any imagination. Understated riffs that are barely worthy of the name except for Bad Reputation which ain't a Thin Lizzy cover alas. More gothic lyrics (get a life - look out your window and think of something to write about). And of course we get instrumentals with stupid Latin names, just in case he wasn't pretentious enough.

Desperate - "Cover art used by special arrangement with legendary artist Frank Frazetta". Seriously, the cover art got more attention for this nonsense than the tunes. And it ain't any wonderful thing anyway. The cover in question has two pseudo fantasy/medieval dudes getting, well getting medieval on each other. The artist apparently does covers etc for Conan comics or somesuch. Cool if Yngwie was Rhapsody or Dragonforce. And if his fan base was 15-20, however methinks that most of his (dwindling) fanbase is probably more like 30-35 so how about we get some maturity in outlook/lyrics etc? The whole 'I'll get you with my axe blah blah blah' and 'you'll never defeat me, don't you see/my arpeggio will bring you low'. What a lot of... well I can't say given the family viewing timeslot we're in!

This album is pretty dire. Facing the Animal was good, no question about that. And Live!! was a well times piece of party rawk rock. So what went wrong here? I own every darn studio LP by this guy and have copped heaps of flak for it over the years from mates. But now even I'm starting to wonder (actually I did continue buying his albums - Attack!! plumbing even lower depths but that's a story for another review).

For anyone who cares by this point the band here is John Macaluso (D), Mats Oluasson (keys) and Mark Boals on vox. Here the man sounds broken in voice, toiling with a powerless voice that's only useful for high end straining. Actually it's weird to see him back in the fold but obviously Yngwie had gone through all his vocalist options and was starting at the top of the list again. But to be fair to Boals I've heard his efforts on the Lapse of Reality album and he sounded great there. So what's the go here?

I fully expect a raft of negative votes for this review, hey if it makes you feel better go ahead. Just don't blame me if you blow your dough on this and discover that this album does indeed give a new meaning to the word unloveable. Darn it all, as a young pup I used to buy any mag with an Yngwie article... what went wrong ...

At least the last track is genuinely amusing. Hey you deserve something to smile about if you make it all the way to the end of this record.

5 out of 5 stars FOR THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE YNGWIE, GO TO HELL!!!.......2006-02-06

I'm sick of y'all bashing my man Yngwie J. Malmsteen, I like this album so much, I bought the Imported version and the US version at one of his shows. Me myself, being a guitar player, I have to say that WAR TO END ALL WARS is one of the rawest Yngwie albums out there, so unless you've been to one of his shows and got to meet him, please don't be quick to judge a book by it's cover. In fact, I dare anyone to challenge Yngwie Malmsteen to a shred off competition, CHALLENGE HIM!!!!
Al-eyet?!!

5 out of 5 stars Bloody x-cellent !!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-05

I have no problem @ ALL w/ the production of this gem (it just suits the music just fine...).
The songs are all very strong (w/ the exception of the bonus track 'Black Sheep' which is just plain silly)...
Hell, I even prefer this release over Alchemy.
Yngwie RULES !!

1 out of 5 stars Yngwie Who?.......2005-03-07

This album in no way resembles Malmsteen's unbelievable playing of the '80's! Yawn is right!! Worst mix ever!! (my grandmother can do a better mix!...and she's dead!)The lead vocals are torturous to listen to! Why can't someone as talented as Malmsteen come up with better songs? and better solo's? Nevermind the ridiculous lyrics!!
Been there...heard that!.. remember his song "Deja Vu"? ...I have that feeling every time I hear his solo's!. How many of the same scale patterns do we have to endure before we all roll our eyes into the backs of our heads??(granted that they ARE fast and, for the most part, clean) This album has all of the makings of a carelessly put together "rush job" for some quick $$.
Unlistenable garbage that's not worth the plastic it was recorded on.The only thing this "CD" is good for is a......FRISBEE!! Don't waste your money or your time on this trash! Malmsteen....you should be ashamed of yourself ! Maybe less time teasing your mop and more time in a practice room will put that much needed creativity back into your solo's. YNGWIE WHO?????....NOW IT'S TRUE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album!!! 6 stars!!.......2006-11-04

I'm not a fan of guitar players, not of instrumental music, not even of Yngwie Malmsteen, but this album is overwhelming, just brilliant!!

I listened to Yngwie because my brothers were fans of 80's hair metal, and well I liked Trilogy and the debut album, but they never did get much into me. Then one day I told my brother that Yngwie had released a new album, he bought it, and when I listened to it, it was love at first sight! I never thought that an album of a guitar player could be this exciting!! These songs are not only a show-off demonstration of power, they are really good rock n' roll! Blitzkrieg, the first tune, rocks from the very first second. Leonardo is outstanding. Playing with fire is incredible!! My favorite of the album. Playing's intro is so exciting! I also love Wield my sword. It's good that Yngwie took the medieval metal theme just to show all those so-call medieval rock bands what GOOD MEDIEVAL METAL is! And Yngwie doesn't even pretend to be one of them!

Overall, I love this album, I don't understand the reason for the changing of covers, but this is Yngwie's best, a true jewel.

3 out of 5 stars For the fan, not the newcomer.......2006-08-18

Another dedicated hard rocker of an album which quite often moves over into outright metal this is in some ways a fairly dark record. A quick perusal of the lyrics sheet shows a range of topics being addressed such as the end of the world, futile wars, government conspiracies etc. Wow, what had he been drinking before writing this stuff? Not that being a darker album makes it bad, it's just somewhat of a departure.

Musically it's quite consistently in the Malmsteen vein, blinging solos and some of the usual fast paced riffery. Due to the lyrical bent there is even less human connectivity that normal with a Malmsteen release but it's balanced by the production being pretty good, a fuller bodied sound much like Facing the Animal which was co-produced by Chris Tsangarides, though this albums production was a solo effort by the main man himself.

Band wise this time we have Mats Olausson on keys, Barry Dunaway on bass, John Macalusoon drums and - hey, a big hello to Mark Boals returning to the revolving microphone duties slot. And even after all these years his voice sounds darn good. Weaker on the bottom end but still quite capable through most of the register which is a joy to hear.

In direct comparison with other 90's Yngwie product this has better production than Seventh Sign but weaker, though heavier, songs. It is not as good as Facing the Animal which was more song focussed. This album seems more an excuse for lots of solos and it has to be said there is some seriously frenetic fret work here. In relation to Fire and Ice this album is far less experimental. The lapsed fan who dropped Yngwie off their radar screen after Fire and Ice should firstly get reacquanted with him via listening to Facing the Animal and Seventh Sign or even his '98 live offering before wrapping their ears around this fairly dense listening experience.

Not bad but not good either.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most recent albums!.......2005-08-06

"Blitzkrieg" and "Blue" are worthy in comparison to the original Yngwie J. Malmsteen's 1st "Rising Force" album. The concept of this album is no different than his recent releases. It is an excellent recording in terms of his no-holds-bar raw guitar sound and more definitive in years. The biggest drawback was the drums (sorry John Macaluso, you're a talented drummer...but...) it sounded like someone was banging on trash cans throughout the hour and kind of killed the record. Overall I do like this record, it's a signal heading towards his original style by incorporating Yngwie "J." Malmsteen's Rising Force which will eventually lead us to know that Yngwie is rising again...as Yngwie J. Malmsteen like how it all started.

2 out of 5 stars boring.......2003-05-15

I pretty much agree with the other guy who said this was a boring album.
I have his first 4 albums (RF,MO,3,O) which are good enough
(except maybe odessy) to forgive YJM for playing the same solos
and same arpeggios.
here it's dull, the lyrics are stupid ( think of a band of 17-year olds) and if you've heard some other stuff before by YJM, you'll find nothing new about the solos.

1 out of 5 stars Dull, boring and total uninspiring........2003-03-29

Repetitive widderley didderley fret work over and over and over again just like all previous releases. Childish and stupid lyrics like all previous releases. Melodies throughout that sound like some 3rd rate opera.

1 out of 5 stars Read this if you're not an ignorant rock guitarist.......2006-08-23

I made my purchase based on the recommendation of an ignorant rock guitarist and I was foolish enough to listen. Harmonically speaking this album is redundant, simplistic and ugly (speaking of the sounds which emanate from this mess, not the album cover). Melodically speaking this musical piece of work doesn't fare much better. Yngwie Malmsteen can play the guitar fast and loud but he plays primarily repetitive patterns and pentatonic scales, it all sounds the same after a while. If your desire is to listen to loud, fast guitar playing your money is better spent on Frank Gambale, Al Dimeola or perhaps vintage Larry Carlton (particularly his first two albums "Larry Carlton" and "Strikes Back"). These gentleman are far more talented than Mr. Malmsteen. If you can bear listening to guitar playing without sound effects you may want to try a Jimmy Bruno CD. Your average teenage male or "20-something" guy with a mullet who hangs around at the Guitar Center is almost guaranteed to give you bad advice when it comes to music. I've met many of these types and most can't make a decent sound or play without the aid of electronic special effects. Futhermore most can't even play a complete song, read music or have a basic working knowledge of chords.

5 out of 5 stars Yngwie continues to outdo himself as the BEST guitarist of all time..........2005-11-29

Folks...

I love reading the reviews by these pedantic pundits that claim shred metal guitar is garbage and not music. Anyone who considers this train of thought veracious is obviously not a musician, and especially not a guitar player. Yngwie pushes an amalgamation of neo-classical, blues, and heavy metal into a concoction that no one other than he can accomplish.

If you like this music, I highly recommend the following guitarists, who are quite excellent and also followers of Yngwie's bold coalescing of various & sundry musical types:
1) Jason Becker (Cacophony)
2) Marty Friedman (Cacophony)
3) Vinnie Moore
4) Paul Gilbert & Racer X
5) Greg Howe

5 out of 5 stars finnaly a decent singer to go with the greatest guitarist alive.......2005-08-19

this is one of yngwie's best -its worth every penny
there are only two problems that mar this close to perfect album
1. very few instrumentals
2. yngwie sings on one song
I love yngwie, he inspired me to learn guitar, but man, he just cant sing. with the exception of that one song, this is musical genius. if you love high speed guitars, any kind of metal, or classical music yngwie is sure to please.

i put this cd on for my friend who listens to nothing but Punk Rock, and even he loved it.

Best songs: Ship of Fools, Baroque and Roll

5 out of 5 stars holy (...).......2005-05-27

this is possibly the most amazing thing i have ever listened to.Yngwie is one of the fastest and most talented guitarists ever. oh yeah, don't listen to the moron reviewer who said shred metal is not music. it is about as musical as music gets. "If Yngwie wants to shred, put out a shredding album"... is this guy serious? this is a shreding album dumbass. and it is an amazing one at that. Boroque and Roll is an amazing song, and a fantastic demonstration of some of the greatest guitar work of the last few decades. this IS PURE MUSIC. in shred metal there is supposed to be a big emphasis on the guitar. so don't say how Yngwie goes on for too long, ruining the song, and desroying the "current key being played". notice how the solos are all in thew right keys. to say shred guts a metal song, is like saying guns, explosions, and hot women gut james bond movies. stick to reviewing what you know about, which is probably things like greenday, nirvana, and korn, bands where the guitarists play 2 chords. SHRED!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my freaking gosh!.......2005-12-25

This review isn't about which version of these early sessions to buy. I bought them both and I'm glad I did. This review is about: Yngwie was 17 when he arranged and played this amazing music! No, forget that. Nevermind that he was only 17. The music on "Genesis"/"Birth of the Sun" is fantastic for any band of any age.

I love all the Yngwie albums (although Barriemore Barlow's hideous drumming on "Rising Force" makes that otherwise great album almost unlistenable. Didn't 80s minimalist drumming suck? Nearly every great rock group went through that monotonous two-drum-sound on at least one album. Blech.) but this one has become a favorite. The energy is so fresh (duh).

Buy either of these CDs and you will be amazed.

4 out of 5 stars A comparison sound review: Birth of the Sun VS The Genesis.......2005-05-14

I am posting this review under both "The Genesis" and "Birth of the Sun" albums.
First, let me make one thing perfectly clear: I do not now, nor have I ever, worked for or been associated with either Yngwie or Marcel Jacob in any way. The following is just my personal unbiased opinion as a guitarist and fan. Take it for what it's worth.
I have Yngwie's "The Genesis" as well as the demos released by Marcel Jacob under the Rising Force name entitled "Birth of the Sun", and although they both have basically the same demo tracks there is an interesting difference between the two in sound quality.
Marcel's disc is slightly louder in volume and to my ears more "pure" (for lack of a better word) in that it sounds closest to the original demo tapes (of which I have a crumbling cassette copy from eons ago). It seems that Marcel did not do any major reprocessing to the tapes, so what you get is basically the raw, straightforward 8 track demo sound from 1980, which some listeners may prefer. I feel that Marcel wanted to keep things as original as possible and I believe that he did just that. In his liner notes he explains the technical process and the problems he had finding an 8 track Tascam machine to play the tapes on. The results are not bad, but what you end up with is a recording that is still quite a bit rough around the edges.
Yngwie, on the other hand, has chosen to remix his distant past. He has re-recorded all of Marcel's bass tracks, effectively cutting his old bandmate out of the demos completely, so no credit is given to Marcel on the disc. Zepp Urgard's original drum tracks remain, so it would seem that some animosity exists between Yngwie and Marcel. Or maybe Yngwie liked Zepp's drumming but not Marcel's bass work on these tapes. Of course, it is also possible that Yngwie wanted to re-record Zepp's tracks as well, but perhaps he reasoned that since the drums leaked onto the live guitar tracks it would have been more problematic to replace them. Possibly it was merely due to the fact that drums are not Yngwie's forte. So for whatever reason, Zepp's tracks remain.
Purists may scream "sacrilege" at this remixing of a notable piece of modern electric guitar history but as Yngwie says in his own words, "It's my creation after all". Normally, most bands use a more collaborative process in the creation of their art, but not in this case where it is obvious that the man had his own vision and the creation sprang from one mind alone. The truly talented artist (in any genre of art, be it painting, sculpture, or music) must always pursue his own vision, and who are we to question his methods. We can only accept or reject his results. Anyway, the newly recorded bass tracks give these aging demos a more streamlined and, shall we say, "produced" sound than before. He also did a better job of remastering the original tapes to produce a less compressed and clearer sound spectrum with a much heavier punch to the drums. Overall, it's a smoother, more aurally pleasing sound.
Therefore, in my humble opinion (and with all due respect to Marcel, who did the best he could), Yngwie has released the superior set of demos here. They are much better sounding and more polished than Marcel's version. It is most likely Yngwie who has the first generation tapes, so he has the highest fidelity copy to work with. In the end, I really like what he did with these raw demos. So my vote goes to Yngwie.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2004-12-02

The other guy who reviewed this works for Malmsteen so he is sabotaging this killer disc. The fact is , this is a great slice of early Malmsteen (circa 1982) when he was like 16 or 17. He does all the vocals and the guitar work is unbelievable (as always). An absolute must for YM fans!! The sound quality is great - who cares if its a boot - its a piece of history!! Pick this up ASAP before YM's management tries to take it off the market.

    1 out of 5 stars Cheap Bootleg.......2004-07-02

I bought this album in Stockholm Sweden, thinking that this was a official Malmsteen release. It's not. Though the tracks on this album are quite similar to the listing on the official release "The Genesis", "Birth of the sun" is released without Malmsteen's or his managements knowing. The sound on this album is fair, but it's not the real deal. Instead of "wasting" your money on this bootleg buy "The Genesis". I have both albums and my advice is: Buy "The Genesis".
