Sequentia here performs a miracle of musical restoration, bringing to vibrant life medieval Icelandic texts about gods and heroes inhabiting a mythic past. Drawing on oral traditions and informed scholarly speculations about long-dead performing styles, they have come up with a hypnotic disc that startles with its power and beauties. The songs and recitations are interwoven with captivating fiddle tunes, and the singers wrench surprising emotions from the old texts. The late Barbara Thornton shines in her solos and duets, and Benjamin Bagby's mesmerizing chanting, recitation, and singing brings us as close as we're likely to get to sitting at the feet of the bards of old. An extraordinary disc that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis

Sings to my DNA.......2007-02-17
While it's not unusual for me to have several different recordings of the same work by different performers, this is the only case in which I have two identical CDs, one for home and one for the car. I have to assume my Scots-Irish ancestry has some Nordic blood, as this music affects me powerfully. I haven't even read the program notes, so it can't be that the text's mesmerizing. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if mead is your drink, it's perfect.
Pretty Good.......2007-02-01
There are some really awesome moments on this disc. All of the Voluspa segments, especially the final one describing Ragnarok, and The Song of the Mill are very well done. The stark atmosphere serves to not only enhance the singing portion, but really draw you into the song. The booklet that comes with the CD is essential, with beautiful translations of the poems that put Caroline Larrington's Poetic Edda to shame.
But there are also a lot of weak moments. I can't say that there is anything interesting in the instrumentals, which are fortunately few and far between. The Tale of Thrym is ok the first time through, but loses it's appeal very quickly. Odin's Rune Verses lack emotion compared to the rest of the pieces.
I also found the Italian Opera style singing a bit imposing. The rolling of the r's is sometime distracting, and I wondered the first time I heard it if that's what the language really sounds like. Of course, this is my first exposure to Icelandic, so I really couldn't tell you if its right or wrong, but the male singers do it much more than the females. Perhaps it just comes from their background as opera singers.
Overall, this is a good thing to have if you're at all interested in Norse/Icelandic/Viking mythology. If you're not, I think you can skip it.
For the Nordic Soul, an echo across time..........2006-10-23
I thought nothing like this existed, yet here it is! The Sequentia group sings ancient Nordic mythological poems, in very much the manner of ancient Skalds. The skald was a bard, or troubadour, of ancient Scandinavia. In the Sagas, many of the greatest skalds came from Iceland, a land colonized by Norwegians unwilling to live under the dictatorship of King Harald Harfa-gri (Harald Fairhair). The songs on this album are recited in Icelandic, a language that has changed only slightly from the Old Norse spoken by their ancestors. The style of performance is a specualtion, to a certain degree, but very much like that of most traditional Nordic folk music, traditions that have been passed on for centuries.
Medieval Latin? Music.......2006-10-14
For some reason, it doesn't sound quite nordic to me. Did they really roll their 'R's in the Old Norse, or is Sequentia putting a Latin spin on it? It sounds like Italian opera accompanied by medieval Icelandic instruments.
A great tool for learning as well as the musical enjoyment.......2006-07-11
I am impressed by, actually, the insert book! It has 47 thin pages of history, lyrics, and translation.
I bought this CD because the only foreign language I really retain is from foreign music. The lyrics are decently clear for learning. I didn't expect the insert book to have Icelandic lyrics, but it has that and a translation. There is a summary on each of the poems also.
The music is a bit simple, but the real art is in the song. The singing could even go without instrumentation. The album is 76:52 minutes long.

Customer Reviews:
Holy (insert expletive here)! These guys are amazing!!.......2007-06-11
1) "The Rage of the Skullgaffer" is THE coolest damn song title, ever. Did my heart good just to see it there on the song list. But hearing it--which I totally recommend for anyone who likes stellar guitar work, Bach, heavy metal and/or breathtaking musical mastery--made me sit in front of my speakers with my mouth hanging open. Still does, actually. The work is that clean, that dynamic, and that incredible. Seriously--someplace Bach is squirming in his grave, wishing he'd been born in the Faeroes and spent some time playing with an axe. I'd buy the CD again just for this track. It's that good, and that unprecedented.
2) Want 13 compelling reasons to read "The Poetic Edda"? Buy this CD. Much of the subject matter for the original pieces comes from the stories found there. "Ragnarok" is a fine concept album, really--running the cycle through Loki's need to come up with an impressive gift for Thor, through his hand in the death of Baldur, up to the meeting of his own fate. And more.
And the subject matter itself--while worthy enough--is not the only amazing and noteworthy point. The voice, hand and many layers with which these pieces were composed is stunning. The lyrics stand alone as examples of excellent poetry true to Viking-Age Norse subjects and style.
They also work just fine as metal lyrics, too.
How cool is that?
3) Just buy it. Really. If you're a fan of smart, powerful, accomplished heavy metal; if you're a vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, bassist on the prowl for some stellar examples of excellence in your art; if you like folk-modern fusions, Norse culture, the Faeroes and/or TYR themselves--you can't possibly be disappointed in this CD.

Viking Metal mised with Folk.......2007-03-01
This is essentially a Metal album fusing post-Metallica black album vocals with grandiose chorals and Faroese and Irish folk music. Sounds a bit The highlights are Wings of Time and Lord of Lies. Both have this folk/metal mis at their core and take this out of the normal Norse metal, (if their is such a thing).
f you like riffs and power metal of-old then you'll love this!
I'm ready for Battle.......2007-02-21
What a Band!!!!!!! I've been looking for a band that does Progressive/Epic Viking/Metal with "clean" vocals for sometime. I dig the harsh vocals, as Enslaved are my favorite band in this genre. Enslaved have done incredible "Viking" metal(Vikingligr Veldi, Frost and Eld) from a Black/metal persective. So, I wanted something from a heavy/epic approach. And Tyr fit the bill magnificently. The guitar work is brilliant(return of the skullgaffer, ride to hel just 2 examples) but, throughout this masterpiece the guitars are stunning, as is, the drummer and the bass playing. These guys are the complete package. Vocals are very well done, as they are sung in English and imo, the beautiful language of Faroese. Tyr tell an excellent story with this brilliant slab of Metal. I am ready to go into battle and die on the field, whenever I listen to this masterpiece. Just lay my sword by my side. And play "Ragnarok" at my Viking pyre. Get it or die.
Progressive Viking Metal?.......2007-01-20
I love Viking Metal, Black Metal, Progressive Rock, Thrash, and some Power Metal if it is over the top and Tyr is a cool mix of all those types of music. They bring a really blend of Progressive Rock and Metal, Epic Power metal meets James Hetfield vocals, Shredding riffs and tons of solos. All of their music is very melodic. The vocals never get screamy, but tend to stay between a melodic croon and a gruff shout and there are tons of power metal layered background vocals on the choruses. Tyr are a 4 piece band with 2 guitarists who both shred amazingly and instead of really fast riffs, opt for slower and mid paced progressive rock riffs and catchy folky epic leads that give them the black/viking metal feel even though they dont have the aggression or dark mood of that kind of music. The songs on Ragnarok are great, very catchy choruses, tons of changes, mellow breakdowns, folk interludes, sing-alongs, key changes, jazzy time signatures, etc...
The theme to all of the songs are Viking battles, epic journeys, the afterlife, death in battle, finding ones self and are based on ancient pagan myths and history. Did i mention that these guys are from the Faroe Islands, between northern Europe and Iceland.
Get this record if you like good catchy epic metal that isnt to aggressive or dark. If you like Metallica, Sonata Arctica, Amon Amarth, or Ensiferum, you will love this!!!

GWAR!.......2006-12-20
Maybe not the best, but this is a solid Gwar album. The riffs, the humor, the meat, it's all here. I'd have to say the stand-outs are the title track, "Dirty, Filthy", and of course the classic opener "Meat Sandwich", which I saw them perform last week. The rest still is great though, right down to the last track. Studio albums are all good and fine, but you'll really never know Gwar until you see them live. And for godsakes, get up in the first few rows. It's a bloody good time.
An Underrated metal classic.......2005-12-25
After the experimental yet still good This Toilet Earth comes GWAR's forgetten, amazing album. My third favorite (My favorite is Scumdogs and my 2nd favorite is America must be Destroyed) this is a metal masterpiece with every track extremely good. Standouts for me are "Whargoul", "Meat Sandwich", "Crush, Kill, Destroy", "Knife in Yer Guts", "Fire in the Loins", "Martrdumb","Nudged" and "None but the Brave" though every track is awesome. Any metalhead should appreciate this classic.
Another good Gwar album.......2005-06-05
This, although definitely not their best, is a very good release.
As with many of Gwar's albums, this one starts out with an AMAZING song, Meat Sandwich, which is one of Gwar's best of all time. That, though, is the only true standout song on the album for me. The other great songs on this album are Whargoul and None But The Brave, but they just do not match up with Meat Sandwich. There are really no songs that I hate, but all of the others are just ok; nothing special. Most of the songs on this album are pretty heavy, and the humor of some songs, such as Dirty Filthy, really makes this a solid Gwar release. There is better out there from Gwar, but this one definitely shouldn't be passed up.
An underappreciated gem in the Gwar catalogue.......2002-03-05
Ragnarok is the forgotten Gwar album: sandwiched between the experimental This Toilet Earth and Gwar's punkish Carnival of Chaos/We Kill Everything, Ragnarok's full-on synth-metal seems out of place. But this is brilliant, classic Gwar, and it's evident from the get-go with Meat Sandwich. Oderus sounds downright pissed on that one! There are tons of great songs on this album: Whargoul, Ragnarok, the insidiously catchy Dirty, Filthy, Stalin's Organs, Martyr Dumb..the list goes on and on. Ragnarok is also the Gwar album with the most non-Oderus songs: Sleazy has a great tune with "Think You Oughta Know This" and songs sung by Cardinal Syn, Sexecutioner, Slymenstra and Beefcake really flesh out the album. This disc brings Gwar lore back to the forefront as well, and the songs focusing on the impending doom of a comet, along with Cardinal Syn's attack, are plain fun. Overall, a return to form and a brilliant and underrated disc. One of Gwar's strongest. Highlights: just about everything.
Quite good.......2002-02-23
This isn't Gwars best album but its a good introduction to the band. The best songs are Meat Sandwhich, The New Plague, Ragnarok, Dirty Philthy, and Wharghoul. There are a few uninspired album fillers on it but its definitly not a bad album. I like how Gwar can be very humorous and still make great music. Its well worth 15 bucks.

Hellishly Evil.......2004-09-11
looks like Thyme wants to take a new approach to their music, and decided to make it satanic.
The Vocals are clear to hear, and it doens't sound like he's singing in a echoing cave (from Arising Realms, the echoes are quite annoying). The guitar riffs are simply freakin evil. I don't know if i should compare it to Immortal's "Battles In the North". i don't think there's a similarity though.
the drums! drums are freakin fast as well.
this album is for you, if you want fast, and satanic music!

** Ragnarok UK **.......2005-01-20
Ragnarok UK were an excellent band, a superb fusion of black metal with folk music. Very well done but not to everyone's tastes as you do need an open mind.
With a beautiful concept of Norse myths and beliefs etc they took their music to new levels along with varied instruments (harp, cello, flute....) to create some good substantial folk music, these and electric guitars, pounding (programmed) drums and bass (probably to portray the anger in those barbaric times), the vocals are also varied to suit.
Deorth (vocals/bass) is now I believe part of The Meads of Asphodel. But if Ragnarok sound like they might be your thing don't hesitate to pick up the albums!!
In 1999 they also released `Domgeorn', along the same lines but with a more fuller, mature sound with some lyrics in Saxon (also with a bonus cover of Heart of Steel by ManOwaR). Rumour has it that the 3rd album was lost when the label Neat Metal sold their wears to Sanctuary music :(
For Erik.......2000-01-22
Excelent selection of folk/metal/goth......great for heavy metal lovers. They take you on a journey to the distruction and creation of the world, as you listin images will appear in your head; very inspirational. They go to the edges of creativity with varying tones and rhythms. My favorites are Passion To A Golden Dawn, Where Once Ravens.., And The Earth Shall Be Holy....among others. They did an EXCELENT job on their first album and on their second Domgeom as well....and i can't wait until he (they) comes out with the third.....Great Job Guys! Farewell...
For Erik.......2000-01-21
Excelent....it is a magnificent collection of folk/metal/goth...great for heavy metal fans. Passion to a Golden Dawn, And thee Earth Shall Be Holy, & Where Once Ravens...are my favorites...among others. Most of it is very dark , it keeps you on the edges, giving you many images as you listin. They will take you to another world, it expands the mind to create. I think they did a great job on their first album....and their second as well..Domgeom. Thee Musicain has a great talent......and i hope he (they) come out with a third one in the not to distant future. Farewell..

Got me into black/gothic metal.......2004-08-10
I bought this album mistakenly believing it was a power metal band. When I first heard it, it obviously wasn't what I expected...screeching, growling, with the fastest guitar work I'd ever heard. It took a few listens for it to grow on me, but when it did, I realized that there is something to the music on this disc: it is powerful music that just wouldn't sound right with melodic vocals. The intro is slow at first, but builds up to the crushing "God is Wasted". This is a good introduction to the speed and melody of the band, as well as the deep-throated vocals. "Searching for my Dark Desire" continues in the same vein, but delivers even more power. "Time Before Birth of Life" begins with a memorable riff, as does "My Hate is His Spirit" before dissolving back into the status quo of speedy guitarwork, though the latter song has a keyboard interlude to break up the monotony a little. "My Refuge in Darkness" is probably my favorite, though by this time the long growl of the singer at the beginning of the song is getting old. The album ends on a great note with "For the World I am Blinded" and the Outro. All in all a very solid black metal album. Its only flaw is it does get monotonous towards track 7 onward.
