DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06

This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Rhythms on Parade, a revised and expanded version of an earlier album, is one of Palmer's most inspired collections. Catchy tunes encourage kids to sing, play, and march along, while Palmer skillfully uses pitch, tempo, and rhythm to reinforce his lyrics. In "Roller Coaster," for instance, tempo and pitch vary to conjure an image of a roller coaster slowly climbing a hill and then rushing down the other side. Palmer sounds comfortable using a wide variety of sounds (including a children's chorus, percussion, keyboards, strings, and woodwinds) in a number of styles (ballads, jitterbugs, and country, among others), which should delight most any child. This CD is lots of fun and has plenty of movement activities that are explained in the CD insert. My kindergarten students have enjoyed it as has my 3 year old at home. Hap Palmer's voice is soothing for kids and not annoying to adults.

This CD is an excellent musical resource for the preschool classroom. I have used it for years with my Nursery 3-4 children. It gives a variety of musical themes. Everyone loves to "Stuff it in the Closet"

I have used this CD for a couple of years with my preschoolers and they all respond positively to it. It is all I need to teach rhythm instruments to my students. I highly recommend it.

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Brought rock back to its roots.......2003-05-01

This is the Classic Thorogood release that brought rock back to its roots when it was so sorely needed! Raw energy and an unabashed singing style that is just so fun to sing along with.

Thorogoods raw guitar sound and ample emotion on this CD make it one worth buying. It sets the tone for things that should have come but never seemed to break out on later albums. If you buy one Thorogood album, this should be the one. A staple of any blues or rock collection. Bouncing back and forth between the hard rocking (Move it on Over/who do you love) to the mournfull (The Sky is Crying) to the emotional (I'm Just Your Good Thing). This album runs the ladder of emotions up and down.

This is the kind of strait hard blues that started it all. "so much trouble" and "cocaine blues" are awesome tracks, so if you like ol' lonesome george you'll love this cd. peace.

Psychedelic groovers Mushroom move into pastoral, acid folk-rock on disc 1 of their 2 CD set. Mellotron, electric harpsichord, acoustic guitar give it a distinct flavor - blending "Ummagumma" Floyd, 70's King Crimson and Led Zep III. They haven't gone totally prog - members of OM Trio, Oranj Symphonette, Jolie Holland, Howard Tate, & Slovenly steer it into wild space jams, jazzy beats and freaked out post-rock on disc 2.

Only the second Mushroom release I've ever heard,better than their 'Analog Hi-Fi Surprise' disc.Disc one features Mushroom playing a gig in London,UK.It's more like psych/folk,with some out-there tracks,like the nine-minute "Isle Of Wight","Half Sicilion/Half Welsh",the trippin' "Just Because Nobody Understands You..." and "Blackwaterside".I could play this disc several times a week.Disc two takes the genre-fusing ensemble to Oakland,CA.This gig is more in the psych/jazz direction.But,rest assure,I thought it was a LOT better than other CD's I've heard before of such.Best cut,hands down is "Sunday Morning,Seven AM".Other audio goods here include the 2-CD's title track "Glazed Popems" and "Running Wild And Looking Pretty".Line-up:Erik Pearson-guitar,flute&tenor sax,Alison Levy-synth,organ&vocals,Ralph Carney-clarinet&soprano sax,Tim Plowman-guitar,Dave Mihaly-congas,bongos,tom-tom&bells,Matt Henry-piano,harp&mellotron,Brian Felix-sound effects,Michael Rinta-trumpet,Ned Doheny-bass and Pat Thomas-drums.Might appeal to fans of Gong,Stereolab,Spacetime Continuum and possibly Air.Recommended.

With two CDs this time around, Mushroom has went the full gammat as far as showing off their talent.
On Disc One, London, Mushroom merges psychedelic with jazz and proves that both genres are not that distant from each other. Imagine "A Saucerful of Secrets" and "Ummagumma"-era Pink Floyd converging with Can. Although I am a fan of "groovy" Mushroom, the first CD is one to cherish. It sounds as if the band is exploring the vast regions of their minds while paying homage to their influences of such bands as Faust and Gong.
On Disc Two, Oakland, Mushroom brings back the familiar "Mushroom sound" with groovy rhythms, experimental effects and layers upon layers of absolute wildness. The organs, drums, bass, synthesizers, guitars and brass intertwine to paint a surreal landscape of the world...if you consider that world to be the corners of 1970s America where Curtis Mayfield and Herbie Hancock reign.
I highly recommend this album but if you haven't listened to Mushroom before, I recommend you do what I did...start out with "Foxy Music" because if this was bought by a first time Mushroom listener, they may receive a shock to their senses whenever "l'auberge" first comes on the hi-fi. But for the adventurous types who crave experimentation+psychedlic+jazz+funk+originality, then definitely pick this up. You will not be disappointed.
