YNGWIE!.......2007-07-23
Trilogy
Yngwie ripping and shredding! All songs are well thought out, and all musicians on this album are excellent.
Best Malmsteen vocal album........2006-12-18
Following his successful release of the grammy nominated self titled "Rising Force" instrumental album in 1984 (which garnered him "neo-classical guitar god" by the way), within a year later and with the same line-up in addition to the drummer that replaced Barriemore Barlow (the greatest rock drummer England ever produced), Yngwie is set to debut Rising Force's best full blown vocal album "Marching Out". This ground-breaking album features not only his signature awe-inspiring guitar work but also his songwriting showmanship. For those of you whom still demanded Malmsteen's classic guitar work aside from J.S. Soto's growling vocals, crank up your volume knob on the tracks "I'll See The Light Tonight"; the classically intro and to the full blown guitar riffs/solos on "Disciples Of Hell", "I Am A Viking" and the dark, melodic instrumental piece to "Overture 1383". This is a no nonsense head-banging heavy metal album in its day and considered by many to be one of the most important and influential albums to date. Truly the best [early] Malmsteen vocal album.
Malmsteen Left its Mark.......2006-10-30
One of the must have CDs of Yngwie Malmsteen. Amazing solos and compositions.
Favourite Tracks: "I'll see the light tonight", "Disciples of Hell", "Soldier Without Faith", "Overture", "Marching Out" & practically everything
Almost 100% Perfect Listening...
Please take a notice that music is evolving. The future was shaping and taking the form of a name of a brilliant artist. The name of SHAWN LANE..
Don't you know him? Don't worry, neither i was aware of him (I am a Malmsteen aficionado since 1988!) This year and after his premature death his music came into my life and shocked me!
Exotic Scales @ hyperspeed & brilliant arpeggios make Yngwie a Top-Shredder for sure. But if one can (could play) fastest and more lyrical & difficult parts on the guitar this would be SHAWN LANE (+RIP)
Let me remind you that Yngwie uses economy picking, Shawn Lane had been alternate picking almost every note. Check him on youtube. SHAWN's solo cannot be played by any Yngwie.I have heard that Shawn had reached 18 notes/sec! Too bad he's gone. He had so much to give. RIR SHAWN
Stunning realisation of Yngwies early talent.......2006-08-15
Malmsteens famous ego once made his mouth say these immortal words - "Anyone who denies I started a new way of playing guitar, is just lying". And you know what? He's kind of telling the truth. But that doesn't make it OK to go around saying it! Such statements can only be backed up by blinding excellence over a long period. Yngwie had the brilliance, but it only lasted a few albums before starting to dissipate due to a shallow creative well.
Regardless, it has to be said that had he continued to produce albums of this stellar quality his ego may have been justified. For stellar it is. An album of near metallic perfection marred by only a couple of tracks that over the years I've come to resent somewhat for blighting this masterpiece.
And masterpiece it is. OK the dil intro was a pain in the old days of cassettes - cos you'd fast forward past it but once you get past that thing then things improve markedly. Truth be told, I'd often fast forward past the first two proper tracks as well, I'll See the Light Tonight and Don't Let it End not quite floating my boat despite their hearfelt longing mixed with heroic metal bombast. No fols, what I wanted was to be found on tracks four onwards.
Disciples of Hell and I Am A Viking are sort of prototype power metal. Bombastic, passionate and fiercely talented heavy rockers and this sort of stuff must of primed so many of the power metal bands that came pouring out of Europe 10-12 years later. The mental imagery these two tracks evoke is spot on for the genre and Jeff Scott Sotos' vocals are magnificent. The instrumental Overture 1383 is a somewhat welcome breather before the listener plunges into the meat of what was originally side 2.
The full metal racket of heroic sytled metal of Anguish and Fear, On the Run Again, Soldier Without Faith and Caught in the Middle capture perfectly the zeitgeist of this form of foot to the floor metal. Yngwie on this album setting forth a histrionic guitar blueprint that so many others followed. Sometimes it feels like every European guitarist from '85 onwards felt obliged to give a passing nod to his fiery fretburning style. But the important aspect which shouldn't be forgotten is that these are proper songs, not just excuses for the next solo. The whole thing is closed out by the instrumental title track, easing the listening down from the whole experience.
A fiercely individual work, Yngwie barely acknowledging the outside world, putting forth his vision which at the time was almost 100% undiluted by commercial concerns. The sort of album that is hiding somewhere in almost every euro metalheads collection and the collections of many heavy rock fans around the world. A quality buy which, along with Trilogy, would be my personal recommendation for any Yngwie newcomer who wanted to see just how influential this guy was. Marching Out would slhow the metal side of the guy while Trilogy the more hard rock/goth metal side of the show.
Unreservedly recommended stuff.
Only One Semi-Loser Song Here.......2006-02-27
The WAY too Def Leppard-ian "On the Run Again" ,despite the typically brilliant guitar solo, is the only song here that's not worthy of Classic designation.
I wanted to start this review out calling this album Yngwie Malmsteen's Rainbow, but that honour goes to Ybgwie's effort with Alcatrazz, which I feel is probably a better overall effort. Yngwie, by Marching Out, had started writing ALL the parts in practically all of the songs he played on, and I feel that this approach led to his eventual downfall songwriting wise. Jeff Scott Soto is a fantastic singer, and a good songwriter as well, but it's obvious here that Yngwie was about as intrusive idea-wise as possible. This approach of his markedly lowered his next album, Trilogy, in quality (though on an instrumental level that disc is practically flawless). It took Joe Lynn Turner's help for Yngwie to have any impact at all (songwriting-wise) on his last arguably significant, Rock-based, album, Odyssey.
On this effort, such excellent songs as I am a Viking probably would have benefitted with Jeff's lyrical input; the lyrical variable as it was ended up extremely poor on Yngwie's part. In other words, one has to make sure to not look TOO closely at the lyrics on the abovementoned song to really enjoy it. Otherwise it's certainly one of the best of the '80's and would have fit with the best on such an outstanding Classic as Dio's Holy Diver quite well. I would daresay that Soldier Without Faith, I'll See The Light Tonight, and Disciples of Hell qualify similarly. Terrific songs with plenty of imagination fueling them.
Otherwise, anyone who gets off on a hyper-steroided version of Coverdale/Hughes Deep Purple, and especially Dio/Bonnet fronted Rainbow, will worship this album. BUY!!!

happy music.......2006-08-29
I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio, not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work. You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then? Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back. That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil, and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay, log onto Amazon, click, click, all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived, suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.
Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26
It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

Beautiful voices, beautiful songs.......2006-10-06
Sigmund Romberg isn't in fashion today, but he was one of the founders of what became modern musical comedy, and in listening to this compilation of songs from three of his best-known operettas, you can understand why. Kirsten's soaring soprano and MacRae's rich baritone combine flawlessly to give the very feel that contemporary audiences must have gotten when they attended a performance of a Romberg work (MacRae also starred in the film version of "Desert Song"). The best pieces on the disc are the duets, some of which can give you authentic chills ("Deep in My Heart, Dear," "Wanting You"), and MacRae's thrilling solos ("Serenade," "The Riff Song," "Marianne," "Stouthearted Men," and the tango-esque "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise"), but Kirsten's renditions of "Romance," "The Saber Song," "The Girl on the Prow," "One Kiss," and the classic "Lover, Come Back to Me" are almost equally good. I've replayed this collection at least 20 times in the last month and I'll do it again. If hearing it doesn't it make you want more Romberg, your tastes are obviously not for classic operetta. Highly recommended.
Beautiful Music - Good Perfomances.......2006-03-25
Kirsten was a first class opera singer who sings this music with technique, voice and style. MacRae has a pretty voice- but I miss the true operatic baritone depth, volume of sound and range of Merrill, Tibbett or Nelson Eddy in this music.
Superb singing.......2005-05-11
This album is not a "performance" but a studio recording of music from three operettas by the great Sigmund Romberg. The singing is superb. Gordon MacRae is a known quantity from his role in the movie version of "Oklahoma" and his voice is never disappointing. Dorothy Kirsten is less well known these days but her voice is well suited for operetta. This album is a deal as it contains most or all of the music of Sigmund Romberg and his lyricists for three operettas, "Desert Song", "New Moon" and " Student Prince". The only quibble with the album is that it begins with the weakest selection ("Student Prince") and if one plays it all the way through it's a long wait for "Desert Song" and the extraordinarily tuneful "New Moon". Most of the tunes are known these days (if at all) from instrumental "mood music" recordings. The singing of MacRae and Kirsten is enunciated well enough so one may enjoy lyrics as well, by the likes of Oscar Hammerstein III. The inclusion of all three operettas gives this album an advantage of the often mix-and-match approach to many available Macdonald & Eddy recordings.
A KISS.......2004-02-21
SUNG BY MARIO LANZA, HE IS AND WILL BE THE GREATEST TENOR OF THIS GENERATION AND THE NEXT GENERATION TO COME.THIS MANS VOICE WAS ONLY PARTIALLY DEVELOPED,IF ONLY AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL IN 1947,IF ONLY HE WOULD HAVE TURNED HIS BACK ON MGM AND CONCENTRATED MORE ON ORERA HE WOULD HAVE REACH THE HIS GOAL,OPERA.I HEARD HIS VOICE WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD.I DOH"T THINK HE DIED OF A HEART ATTACK,HE WAS HELPED.I AM 62 YEARS OLD, AND HAVE WAITED FOR ANOTHER VOICE LIKED MARIO LANZA BUT SO FAR NONE HAS MATERALIZED.
Romberg never sounded better!.......2003-09-24
I am one of those who, as a great fan and collector of operetta songs, find this album (actually a compilation of 3 LPs from 1963) the single most brilliant one ever recorded.
There are very few singers who could get so completely into the spirit of the songs and characters of operettas as Gordon MacRae. A technically magnificent voice with a phenomenal range, vibrant intensity and great warmth and sincerity - the rare singer whose performances all felt spontaneous and who could go from caressing the ear one moment to singing in the most powerful tones the next - all in a glorious legit voice of course. His rousing numbers like "The Riff Song" from The Desert Song and "Stout-Hearted Men" from New Moon are so exilarating that they actually conjure up a larger-than-life vision. His haunting "Softly as in the Morning Sunrise" obliterates all other versions and in terms of passion expressed in song, it would be difficult to surpass his rendition of the Desert Song.
Kudos also of course to the everlasting charm, grace and talent of the great Dorothy Kirsten who sounds perfectly convincing and fetching as the youthful heroines she portrays even though she was already fiftyish at the time this was recorded. Her solos of "One Kiss", "Romance" and "Lover Come Back to Me" are nothing short of superb and convey the longing of her characters beautifully. Truly enchanting.
As someone who loves to compare as many versions as possible of the great musicals and operettas, I can truthfully say that I have never heard more exquisite versions of those songs anywhere. While many versions I have heard elsewhere seemed either over the top or emotionally detached, these ring with true romantic ardor and the arrangements are beautiful. If the beautiful duets like "Wanting You" from New Moon and "Deep in My Heart, Dear" from The Student Prince don't send shivers up your spine, nothing ever will. They litterally take your breath away.
I do feel, however, that a couple of the songs from the earlier MacRae version (from the early 50s) of The Student Prince rank a bit higher than the songs from this version if only for the fact that the arrangements of the "Student Marching Song and The Drinking Song" were livelier and performed not just by the chorus as they are here, but led by Gordon MacRae at his very best. I miss hearing him on those when I play this CD. (Most of the songs from his earlier versions of The Desert Song and The Student Prince are available on various CD compilations. His earlier version of New Moon has not been released on CD yet, but can be found on vinyl).
The Robert Wagner chorale is absolutely outstanding and does a splendid job throughout.
(Please note that the original vinyl albums of each show featured additional songs not included in this compilation and a finale medley).
Yes, I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves operettas, melodious songs and rich singing voices!

Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops are as American as apple pie.......2000-07-16
For those of us who have enjoyed the irrepressible Maestro Kunzel and the effevescent Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for so many years both live, on Cd and on PBS, this collection of Americana is as good as it gets. Sousa, long revered as America's March King, shines on these discs as the composer of delightful dance tunes and even 'The Presidential Polonaise' a worthy contender with the weighty European prcessional. Its a pity that the President doesn't trot this out for White House functions. The tunes are every bit a Fourth of July celebration. The spoken word piece, 'Casey at the Bat' couldn't have a better narrator than Johnny Bench,a man who knows the score about baseball. So, if you want to have yourself up and marching and dancing and laughing around the house, buy this collection and treat youself to a holiday any day of the year.

Customer Reviews:
Very High Quality 'Easy Listening'.......2007-01-18
This is the second of Chandos 'The Grainger Edition' recordings I have reviewed and it is much closer to the heart of my tastes than the piano accompanied baritone solos of Volume 2 I previously reviewed. Just as I will value a cookbook if it has just one extraordinary recipe or a computer book if it has just one extraordinarily good programming idea, I wouldlove this album even if everything else but 'Scotch Strathspey and Reel' were junk. But, of course, all the other tracks on the album are not junk, they are very, very good. Just not as enjoyable as this superb rendition of the famous sea chanty, better known by its first line 'What do we do with a drunken sailor...' The 'Joyful Company of Singers' earns their name on this one. Next to Russian liturgical choral singing, sea chanties are my favorite, so I confess to being just a bit less than impartial on this one, but there you are. This one is simply lovely.

Customer Reviews:
Recommended UNT release.......2001-07-30
Corporon's nationally-recognized North Texas Wind Symphony provides crisp playing and solid intonation on this 1999 Klavier release. The works on this disc, which date from the mid 1920's to just a few years ago, contrast nicely with one another. The bright sonorities and Greecian flavor of Makris' "Aegean Festival Overture" open the program, followed by German composer Rolf Rudin's lush and visceral "Bacchanale, Op. 20." Ken Benshoof's witty and Copland-esqe "Out and Back Again" features a violin-cello duet amidst an agreeable chamber wind accompaniment. Vincent Persichetti's monumental 1972 "Parable IX, op. 121," by no means an easy work, is given an excellent reading here by the North Texas musicians. Following that is former Army bandsman John Krance's sensual orchestration of George Gershwin's brief "Second Prelude," a work that sets the stage for the CD's excellent finale, UT professor Donald Grantham's brilliant and colorful "Fantasy Variations" (on the same Gershwin prelude).
If you have an affinity for orchestral sound (in this case, band sound), then this CD is for you. The playing is taut, the interpretations sensitive, and the sonics are fairly good. The Grantham makes this purchase worth it. Highly recommended.
