Swedish Rockers Age.......2007-07-13
This is a good look back at Europe's career, capturing their early albums with the energy and jazz a good Christian metal band needs like Seven Doors Hotel and Stormwind. Then they shifted gears to arena shock rock with the huge Final Countdown, a much more mature album. The last six tracks show an aging Europe past theor prime but it's much more right here right now. When these people who grew up in the 80s and 90s, that's when we've got them, when they don't care if they're popular any more because 1 they graduated high school and 2 they're getting old. The latter days of Europe is much more like Irish purity, for similar stuff see Robert Plant's solo career or later Asia. I had two Europe albums on casette,. one the machine ate the tape and the other is still intact. I have their first 3 80s albums on CD ripped on my hard drive so it doesn't skip. Unless you really are into your European roots like myself, I would stay away from their 90s and 2000s stuff, they sound like tired old men, but that's when we got them.
Great Compilation..........2007-05-07
Buying this 82-92 collection of Europe was just the icing on the cake to my Europe collection. Of course,we know,at least in the U.S., Europe's major success was in the eighties. All my albums of thiers was on cassette. So this is the perfect cd, to compliment all. I'm sure in the future,I may want to buy ,"The Final Countdown" on cd.Anyway,I discovered some tunes,I never heard of.That were popular overseas. So what a great deal for me. If you know Europe, you the the tunes.Of the tunes ,I wasn't familiar with,"I'll Cry For You","Sweet Love Child" and "Yesterday's News, what a great discovery.Maybe ,with my renewed interest in the band,I'll check out the newer recordings.Hair rock will rule forever in my books. Europe fills the bill.
A useful disc for diehard fan or casual observer.......2006-03-17
This is a really good taster for this band. The main reasons are that it has their huge hits plus doesn't shy away from putting on some of their earlier rockers either and some of them may surprise people who only knew their couple of megahits back in the day.
Really it's a good buy for Europe fans too as it collects most of the stuff that make us like this band. For the real fan one of the attractions is the liner notes by Joey Tempest. They do add to the listening experience and aren't just chest beating nonsense.
I'm not going to go into detail with the various tracks - the newcomer can discover for themselves what songs apart from the hits they like and determine if they want to explore further (the chronological order of this album is a good touch, more bands should do this with 'best ofs').
Just a note for those who already have all the albums - there are a couple of non LP tracks here - study the tracks listing our mates at Amazon have available and decide for yourself if hearing/owning these are worth the money. My vote is that yes, get this disc even if you have all their studio LP's.
This is the Europe collection to buy!!.......2006-01-29
Europe scored big in the 80s with Carrie and the Final Countdown and produced a string of hits and it's a shame that Europe is often over-looked and under-appreciated. Europe was one of the best bands from the 80s and their Prisoners in Paradise album was a great album. Europe has released an album with all their greatest hits and this is an excellent collection. This is a great album.
Ah, The 80's!.......2004-05-18
Europe was a hair band from Sweden who enjoyed their gratest commercial success with 1986's The Final Countdown. Some of it may be a little AOR influenced, but it still is very good. The first few tracks are VERY heavy and power metal sounding. Then some lighter, but still powerful songs come. Included on here is some of the band's biggest hits, The Final Countdown, Rock The Night, and the sometimes corny power ballad Carrie. But in spite of the lyrics sometimes being corny, they were one of the most unusual, fun, and interesting bands of the infamous hair metal era.

This anthology leans heavily on recent efforts, drawing just six of 14 tracks from the Fish era. Doggedly unfashionable in the '80s, these Brits have in fact turned out superior prog-rock with minimal bombast and tuneful ingenuity. One new track, "I Will Walk on Water," indicates the band's day is far from done. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
A great way to get to know early and mid-Marillion.......1999-11-04
Also known as Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other, this represents the commercial best of both the Fish and Hogarth eras. There are other wonderful, thought provoking songs on the albums this compilation comes from, and true music fans will search these out.. This CD is, however, a great way to get to know the basic elements of Marillion's music.
OK album, but for starters only.......1998-06-22
I believe there are only one or two 'new' songs on the album, the rest is old stuff. It's an ok album to get to know the band, how they were and how they are nowadays (I'm referring to the 'exchange' of Fish with Steve Hogarth). The only 'new' song, which doesn't appear on any other album would be the last song - 'Sympathy', which is a cover, (and therefore) not really Marillion-like, if you ask me. Don't buy it if you already have the other CDs, but otherwise a nice 'get to know' album.

Good performances of somewhat minor Lindberg.......2006-07-09
Magnus Lindberg's writing for larger ensembles is extensive, and he has often quipped that his "favourite instrument is the orchestra". Here the Sakari Oramo leads the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra in four pieces for chamber orchestra.
The style of Lindberg's youth--up to "KRAFT" in 1985, was focused mainly on rhythm. "Tendenza" (1982) is a good example of this, very energetic, violent even, its soundworld is something like Elliott Carter's with stranger textures. This is good listening, but in spite of the ingenuity of some of its ideas, the total result is somewhat immature. KRAFT showed great progress, and the best was yet to come, for after that massive piece, Lindberg entered a hiatus of two years while recovering from a tropical disease and rethinking his style, ultimately reappearing with a focus on extremely rich harmonies.
"Corrente" (1992) was one of the first pieces Lindberg wrote after his comeback trilogy "Kinetics"-"Marea"-"Joy" and the first version of his piano concerto, but breaks new ground in introducing a form that was to be widely used in the Clarinet Quintet, "Related Rocks", and the Concerto for Orchestra. A smooth, even orchestral sea (the title does mean "flowing") dominates in the first portion, while towards the end there's a dance-like ostinato. It also inaugurates an occasional use of quotation; here we hear a bit of Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary" buried in the waves. Later that year, Lindberg reworked the piece as "Corrente II" for large orchestra, but I think the original version for chamber orchestra works better.
Lindberg had received a commision from the Swedish Rikskonserter for a vocal work, but responded with the purely instrumental "Coyote Blues" (1993). The work is built up from small melodic motifs that allowed to move freely in what might be described as aural arabesques; indeed, Lindberg has called this "fake Arab music". This is an unusual move, and the piece sounds very different from Lindberg's mature work. I find it lacks real power or excitement, and rarely return to it.
"Arena 2" (1996) is the latest of the works here. It's a scaled-down version of a piece Lindberg wrote the previous year for the 1st Jean Sibelius International Conducting Competition. Much of the music is based on toying with a brief motif and frequent trumpet fanfares (perhaps explaining the piece's title), compelling engine-like moments first on low instruments and later on high winds, and even elements of true melody (which are generally not one of the composer's concerns). "Arena" showcases all sorts of different orchestral possibilities and is extremely elegant in its construction, showing that Lindberg had made progress since the overlong "Aura" for orchestra of 1996 before. Now, I prefer the version for full orchestra, which is awesome in its proportions and sounds better with fuller percussion, but "Arena 2" is very useful indeed for understanding the structure of the piece.
"Corrente" and "Arena 2" are good pieces, and tie into "Corrente II" and "Arena" in such a way as to make the whole remarkable, but all in all the four individual pieces on the disc are somewhat minor Lindberg. If you are looking for an introduction to his post-KRAFT work, the Sony disc with "Cantigas"-"Cello Concerto"-"Parada"-"Fresco" is good, as is the Ondine disc with "Feria"-"Corrente II"-"Arena".
