You Thought You Knew It All?.......2007-07-11
One of the Megadeth's most underrated beside "Risk", "So far, So Good...So What!", and "Cryptic Writings" is "Youtanasia". Many fans say that the last good Megadeth album was "Countdown to Extinction" or "Rust in Peace". I cannot understand it. I think the riffs in this album are very good and they are proper metal. The first song "Reckoning Day" is special because it has brilliant drumming. It feels like judgement day...the lyrics "Don't Want No Revenge, ain't no pay back time, it ain't called getting even, here comes the reckoning day...". "Train of Consequences" is a great song...many think it is one of Megadeth's best. "A Tout Le Monde" would be a great closing track in the gigs..."These are the last words that I ever speak, they set me free". The album really is as heavy as "Rust in Peace"...may be heavier too. It's nice to notice that there's some religious songs too. This is the first album where Mustaine thanks God. The songs "Reckoning Day", "Train of Consequences", "I Thought I Knew It All" refer to that thing how great God is. "Victory" is an issue of crusifiction I think. The song "Blood of Heroes" refers to saints I think...their message is still here. I think the song "The Killing Road" means the road of the sinner...it really is a killing road. "Black Curtains" tells about the never ending hell...so it's a warning...the lyrics are purely about destruction and pain and fear.
Stars: Reckoning Day, Addicted to Chaos, I Thought I Knew It All, A Tout Le Monde, Train of Consequences
4.4 2nd fave Megadeth CD.......2007-06-20
I know many believe the older Megadeth stuff is better. I, for one, didnt appreciate this CD until recently. Being a fan since 85 i have a history with them. The songs are stripped down, not thrashed out and the guitar solos are more melodic. The difference between this disc and other Megadeth is that this is more song oriented and there are hooks.
Best tracks are the incredible (one of my Favs of all time) 'A tout le monde' and my fav. 'Elysian Fields". Also tracks like 'Thought i Knew it all' and the cool 'Train of Consequences' are really well done. Yes the songs are structured but far from weak.
This is a polished sound for Megadeth, but this CD hit the point good. Some may see it as more commercial, i see it as accesible. But lyrically it is personal and the songs really kick as*! Just not in a 'speed metal' sense. Very good CD that gets a bad rap amongst their catalog.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
Youthanasia is not Megadeth's best album, but it is awfully close. If you enjoyed Countdown to Extinction, you will love Youthanasia.
Megadeth tries something different........2007-02-04
On Youthanasia Megadeth decided to try a new direction, this album was less heavy than the previous ones and you could tell that there was a more comercialised sound to the album but its not as bad as you may think (Atleast they didn't sell out like Metallica). Megadeth have always rocked out loud and on this album its the same but there is less thrashing on this album, you can compare this with Countdown To Extinction which had alot of success the riffs are slower but still sound heavy and the lyrics are more political and insightfull, the concept is about kids who are grown into poverty and drugs so its very thought provoking. If you ask any Megadeth fan and they will probably tell that Youthanasia contains one of Megadeth's best songs like Train of consequences, Reckoning day and Tout La Monde which is the most beatifull ballad song dave has ever written and it doesn't sound to corny which is great. There is also the other underrated songs like Elysian fields which is my favorite Killing road and the song Youthanasia all this makes for a great and catchy album, it also shows how much they evolved but the problem is that the last two songs in my opinion were just filler like Victory with its lyrics from previous song titles I never liked this song and think that it was quite awfull. Anyway the bonus tracks are almost worth getting this remastered edition and its not a cash-in as the sound is very much improved and Dave Mustain really does care about his fans as you'll see in the liner notes.
great great album.......2006-08-24
megadeth are one of my favorite bands, i love daves vocals and martys guitars AND especially davids bass lines. this album to me is like megadeths master of puppets, the first time you listen to it, it seems like good tracks just keep comin and comin. maybe not as heavy as countdown to extinction or rust in peace, but this is album is extremely catchy.
my favorite songs on this album are:
reckoning day
train of consequences
addicted to chaos
a tout le monde
blood of heroes
and family tree
hopefully i helped you decide whether or not to buy the album

Youthanasia.......2005-04-22
This is one of the greats in Megadeth's army of unstopable Heavy Metal power. The songs are amazing, there wasnt one i didnt like. The first song Reckoning Day was a song no metal head can forget. And Family Tree (number 8) had an infectious chorus and gets stuck in your head for days. Over all,its worth the money.

worth the extra cash for the live tracks!!!.......2004-11-26
This Japanese version of Megadeth's Youthanasia is simply killer...the live tracks alone are worth the extra cash in my opinion, and the song Crown Of Worms is awesome too! In my opinion, this cd is very under-rated and overlooked...This cd still has all of the classic Megadeth elements, such as killer riffs and the trademark Dave Mustaine snarl,it's just slower, that's it,period! I don't understand why any Megadeth fan would reject this cd,but we all have our own opinions...songs like Reckoning Day,Train Of Consequences,Black Curtains,Victory, and Blood Of Hereos have the trademark Megadeth riffs, and Songs like Addicted To Chaos show an amazing in-depth songwriting ability by the man Dave Mustaine...Personally,I like all of the songs on this cd,even the title track that everyone thinks is so terrible...on to the 3 live tracks,Holy Wars will simply blow you away, and Symphony Of Destruction and Sweating Bullets sound really awesome live too,the sound quality of these live tracks is pretty much an A+,b/c you can hear all of the instruments really well...So to sum up this import version of Youthanasia, they made a masterpiece better just by adding 3 live bonus tracks with killer sound and a good bonus studio track called Crown Of Worms!!! 13 stars out of 5!!!

This is one awesome album. The original songs from Youthanasia are classic Megadeth, but the remixes of S.O.D. and H.W. are great songs for those who love Megadeth and industrial rock. What else could a band like Nine Inch Nails and Megadeth come up with but a great industrial song like Symphony of Destruction. I recommend this CD to any Megadeth fan.

Solid metal; doesn't match previous masterpieces.......2007-06-06
Youthanasi is an album of very consistent metal. Again produced by Mustaine and Max Norman it trundles alonb at a mixture of speeds and once more addresses a range of issues. Such intelligent and trend ignoring music not only shows the bands muse not waning but also contines the bands quality period as this album is assuredly better than anything pre Rust.. However it is also most assurdly not in the same masterclass as Rust and Countdown.
My personal favourite tunes here would include lead cut Reckoning Day and Train of Consequences for having plenty of the fire musically that we've come to expect plus the intellectual aspect as well. Elysian Fields and The Killing Road both show the band at their most melodic, riding riffs that complement the rhythm section. Other tunes that pass the test (IMHO) would be Addicted to Chaos and Blood of Heroes, the former a particularly brooding slow burner of a metal number but perhaps not to everyones tastes.
More middling metal in terms of quality is A Tout Le Monde which for all the fanfare at the time doesn't really work. Nor does the title track. Both are salveable for Megadeth diehards as something a touch different in particular the former. And the great playing on this CD (with restraint added to the formula) and the fact the booklet contains full lyrics to the shebang is also nice.
Fairly rubbish tunes are on this album alas, these basically being the final three tracks. Album closer Victory is at least in posession of an idea which is to make extensive use of previous Megadeth song titles to form much of the lyrics. Also to be noted is it's defiant yet uplifting tone which doesn't happen that often on Megadeth albums.
This is a good album of sturdy metal not without flaws. The production and interesting players not to mention the bands history all work towards making this a four star album despite some dodgy tracks. Megadeth fans probably already own this - newcomers should pick up Rust in Pieces and Countdown to Extinction first and then move onwards to this.
By the way early editions sometimes had a bonus disc of 6 live tunes - great extra value if you can track it down.
Youthanasia.......2007-04-24
Megadeth-Youthanasia ***
To cut straight to the chase this is not the best Megadeth album. Not by a long shot. I heard nothing but good things about this album so bought it and was so let down that it isnt even funny. Mustain and Friedmen are once again as always excellent. The two of them had they stayed friends and been able to stand each other would be rivaling James and Kirk by now.
'Reckonin Day' is a great song. The best way to start of the album really. A nice way to get the ball a rollin. 'Train Of Cosequences' is the best song on the album, and it is really just down hill after this. The song is actually one of the best songs Mustain ever wrote. The guitar is great and the lyrics are signature Mustain. Some of the songs like 'Addicted To Chaos' 'A Tout Le Monde' and 'The Killing Road' are all excellent songs. The latter containts an excellent guitar solo. The title track 'Youthanasia' is a diamond in the ruff really because it is surrounded by awful songs. 'Elysian Fields' is just flat out bad. 'Family Tree' is boring and offers nothing and every time I try to listen to this album all the way through I skip this song. 'Blood Of Heros' has its moments where it is a great song and then others it is just annoying, and Mustains voice is strained on it, it seems. 'Victory' is not victory for the band, the song just flat out sucks, sorry die-hards but lets face facts it sucks. The other songs werent even worth mentioning.
This is one of the worst Megadeth albums by far. It only offers a hand full of good songs, and even those are sub-par to say the least. There is only really one excellent song anyways. Youthanasia is out of all the Megadeth albums I own, the worst. It is not worth owning, buy the best of for 'Train Of Consequences' because it is the only song really worth owning.
Youthanasia; another victory for Megadeth.......2006-08-11
Youthanasia (1994.), Megadeth's sixth studio album
The early 90's saw Dave Mustaine's Megadeth enter their golden years as a band. With the recruitment of guitar genius Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza at the start of the decade, the band had what would become their classic line-up in place. From these changes came firstly 1990's `Rust In Peace', one of the greatest metal albums of all time in my opinion and following this, 1992's `Countdown To Extinction', which was a little more commercial and less thrashy but never the less compromised nothing in songwriting excellence and was a classic album in it's own right. By the mid-1990's though, musical tastes were changing rapidly, metal had maintained popularity alongside the alternative rock burst at first but by 1994, grunge rock was all the more predominant and other acts such as the rap-metal styled Rage Against The Machine were gaining popularity. The metal scene was going underground again. That aside though, how did Megadeth's `Youthanasia' fare?
At the time of it's release, `Youthanasia' sold copies faster than anything else Megadeth had produced and would subsequently produce and peaked at #4 on the billboard. Dave Mustaine and his band make no compromises again with their sound though to fit in with the current musical trends at the time and credit to them for doing that. The album met with good critical reviews upon it's release however for some reason some fans found the album too `poppy'. I personally struggle to come to terms with this view, seen as `Youthanasia' for me comes across as being less commercial than it's predecessor `Countdown To Extinction'. The guitars for me are a little heavier and crunchier and the songwriting is darker and moodier. This is perhaps a good reflection of Dave Mustaine at the time of the album's making where he was becoming frustrated with other band members wanting to write more songs as well as other tensions. There are songs on the album that have a little commercial feel to them, but no way for me is this album poppy. The album was a victim obviously to some `fans' who only liked Megadeth because they were fast and heavy, not because they were Megadeth. Bands develop from their original stylings; ok so this ain't thrashy and fast like `Rust In Peace', get over it and embrace an intelligently developing band with an open mind. After all, it is even as if Megadeth sold out their sound with this album; just look at the beautiful `A Tout Le Monde' - MTV censored the video because the lyrics were `disturbing' on the suicide theme. Dave Mustaine and Megadeth bow down to no-one on this disc. These irritations I have about peoples perceptions of the post-thrash era Megadeth aside, this is one awesome album. Dave Mustaine's lyrics and his vocal delivery of them throughout the album is awesome and he deals with various `difficult issues' such as incest on `Family Tree' and suicide on `A Tout Le Monde' really well. The riffs are heavy, dark and crunchy throughout the album giving way to some mesmerising musical sequences. The album is no slouch on the solos front either and as is per usual for a Megadeth album, there are lots of them and they all shine.
Following Megadeth's re-union in 2004 with the release of 'The System Has Failed', Dave Mustaine personally helped remaster the band's back catalogue. With 'Youthanasia', the remaster is excellent. All of the guitar lines shine through the remaster, the drums are crisp sounding and the bass is ever present. Mustaine's vocals also sound great. The remaster has a demo of the classic `A Tout Le Monde' with slightly different lyrics in the French chorus. Also included is a previously unreleased song called `Millenium Of The Blind' and `New World Order' and a nice instrumental in `Absolution'.
A slow, brooding and foreboding riff gets the album going with `Reckoning Day'. A very strong and atmospheric opening track with a great chorus. I like Mustaine's growled and sometimes distorted vocals on this opener. One of the album's finest efforts in `Train Of Consequences' follows, with it's unusual scratchy riffs and clanging basslines. The verses and chorus are effortless and the solos are great. `Addicted To Chaos' is a sludgier and moodier affair with some quite introspective lyrics, again love the chorus; very effective, as is the echoey `Addicted!' vocal exit. The amazing `A Tout Le Monde' is next. The song about suicide is one of Dave Mustaine's finest songwriting moments and the song pans out to be a timeless ballad styled tune, a great change of pace. Freidman's solo is also astounding and the harmony to end the track is excellent. The more poppy but enjoyable `Elysian Fields' is next. The riffs are catchier on this one and less dark and the harmonised chorus makes a great sound. `Killing Road' has a vintage Megadeth opening with the solo guitar riffing and bass/drum interjections. Lyrically truthful abouts it's subject matter, it has more great riffs and fine solos.
`Blood Of Heroes' is next up. Another slower and in some ways ghostly sounding song, which is appropriate for it's content again. The song has a sirine opening and catchy riffs. Mustaine's vocals have a slighlty different but good sound to them. The chorus is awesome. After this is another one of the album's gems in `Family Tree'. This is a fantastic track which has some rather disturbing subject matter about...incest. The song has some nice contrasts, ranging from a whispery verse and built to climax in the chorus. `Youthanasia' is a solid title track about the forgotten generations. Mustaine's lyrics carry the song very well and are the centrepiece. The bonecrunching chorus is also very effective. `I Thought I Knew It All' is another solid metal song, not too spectcular but featuring some great guitar work in the chorus (I'll say it again, this album has some really cool choruses right through). `Black Curtains' is on a similar level, a little bit slow and stately nevertheless it generates a gloomy atmospheric for the song, as was probably intended. Then though we come to perhaps one of Megadeth's greatest tracks in `Victory'. This for me is without doubt the finest track on the album and is Megadeth at their very best. Only Dave Mustaine could pen lyrics using song titles from his previous albums, but he does it here in this song to create a song to show he has been a victory over drugs and has survived his excessive addictions, `some crazy shit has happened since the conjuring' indeed. That aside, this song has fantastic riffs and a rip roaring chorus that's a real sing along, not that I personally identify with Mustaine's years of heroin and cocaine usage of course! The song has a great, urgent drive and has a vintage soloing section which is the song's highlight. Mustaine and Freidman trade off 4 magnificent solos.
So there we have it, the much underrated IMO `Youthanasia'. Megadeth may have developed and outgrown their earlier thrash roots but they are no way watered down artistically on this album; this album is 50 minutes of kick ass heavy metal with plenty of awesome moments. Another classic, this is the 3rd of 3 five star efforts from the Freidman/Mustaine/Menza/Ellefson era of the band, which is without the best Megadeth ever had. A must for any metal fan, you'll be missing out if you don't own this one!
Lacks speed but still damn good and heavy. .......2006-01-28
Even though Youthanasia is not as fast as Rust in peace of Peace sells they still got the heavyness. This is way better than Countdown to extinction. Also this has some pop elements but not in a bad way. Not those pop elements found in this new music. In a way, it adds some heavyness. The only bad song is I thought I knew it all which is a lame pop some. Also the production is great. Even though they remastered this album, the original version sounds better. This is just a great metal album. Metallica were the kings of 80's metal, the early 90's had Megadeth. I got a used copy for 1.00 dollar in near perfect condition. Great deal. Even though I like Metallica better than Deth, this is just as good as Metallica ever written.
Youthanasia Takes The Next Step From Countdown's Perfection.......2005-12-18
Countdown To Extinction is the greatest Megadeth album of all and one of the greatest metal albums ever made, and Dave Mustaine had to have realized that there is only one place to go from the top and that is down. Now...Youthanasia comes out and Megadeth shows us that the fall from grace is going to be a very gradual one for the Megadeth boys. A close to the perfection of Extinction, Youthanasia starts out with Reckoning Day and makes us pay attention right away. Feel the power. Train Of Consequences, Addicted To Chaos, A Tout Le Monde, Elysian Fields, The Killing Road, Family Tree, the title track & Blood Of Heroes list among the truly great songs on this album. Megadeth makes strides to become a popular entity, but they are still heavy and anyone thinking that they sold out to the poser side of metal, think again. A few weak spots, but nothing overpoweringly weak. Still a strong effort.
Dig it!
