She does it again.......2007-01-29
An outstanding follow-up to her debut album, Learning How To Fly. Inga's voice is smooth and accurate while at the same time retaining a sense of intimacy and warmth.
Inga sings and swings.......2006-07-09
A great album of great songs. Inga sings with feeling and is ably supported by the Bill Peterson Trio. 'Black Crow' and 'Just in Time' are exceptional tracks, but then the whole album is superb. Excellent.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31
If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.
Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25
It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.
pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19
It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!
Excellent CD.......2005-03-20
I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

well, if you like elevator music then you should get this cd. if not then dont waste your time, its lame. big time lame. just listen to the audio samples im so glad i didn't waste my money on this piece of crap.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.
DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good to Me," she has such an upbeat twinkle, you suspect she means every word. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
if you like female jazz vocalists you'll love this album.......2004-07-27
I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.
Everyone does it, and seldom as well..........2004-04-10
All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

Breathtaking...if you understand Hebrew.......2006-01-24
This is a sure hit with hippie types. What really works in it is the beautiful liturgy read with intensity and religious ecstasy. I am not sure how it would sound if you do not understand Hebrew, however, although the melodies, at least some of them, may still be familiar.
They also have a Pesach disc that is also wonderful, and always playing in the background around the holiday time at my house! I really love this disc!
Glowing Jewish chants to warm your heart.......2003-11-14
In this cd you will find beautiful chants in Hebrew (or Ladino?)and Spanish. The mood is festive and cheerful, the melodies haunting and enthralling. The singers have no American accent whatsoever, which make the chants sound quite real. The accompaniment is sometimes oriental, sometimes a mixture of all kinds of instruments. Although some of the songs are sometimes too modern and sentimental, this is a excellent performance and I highly recommend it if you need music to hearten you and give you a feeling of community.
Too straight (?) for me.......2003-10-28
Being, for the most part, foreign to Jewish traditions, I can not truly appreciate the beauty of this CD but enough people have praised it for you to believe what they are saying.
The reason I got this CD was very simple: it was produced and arranged by Anthony Coleman, my hero pianist and composer. His style, technique and wit has thrilled me on virtually every of his own CDs so anything to do with him I am buying, no questions asked. In addition, this CD is released by the Knitting Factory, which (to a degree) is a recommendation by itself. Some of the most exciting and accomplished musicians from the so-called downtown New York scene of improvisers are playing on this CD in addition to Anthony Coleman: Erik Friedlander, Jim Pugliese, Marc Ribot, Brad Shepik, Ben Street, Douglas J. Wieselman, among others.
So, what's the problem? Emphasis was clearly put on singing, and musical accompaniment is (or appears to be) secondary: all this sounds rather uneventful and, well& boring, to me. I was hoping to hear some exciting, original musical renditions, not unlike many gems released on Radical Jewish Culture edition of John Zorn's Tzadik Records. I am not saying they are not present, I am saying that I can not recognize them.
Music To Touch Your Soul.......2003-06-15
This CD is a collection of some of the most extraordinary music I have ever heard. It is probably my favorite CD in a very large, eclectic collection. There are 12 magnificent Shabbat songs/chants on the disc. The prayers are all from the Jewish Sabbath liturgy and the music has roots in the Sufi, Turkish, Ladino, Hebrew and Ashkenazi traditions. You don't have to be Jewish, however, to enjoy the music. I find myself playing this several times a week and singing along. I cannot carry a tune, but my singing is always joyful and from the heart - with this magical music, it would be impossible to feel anything other than exhilaration. Fortunately the English lyrics and Hebrew transliteration are provided with the CD.
Another reviewer, Rabbi Gershom, has already written a detailed description of the music, its roots and meaning, which I enjoyed very much. So, I will not attempt to do the same. I am lucky to live in New York City and have access to Temple B'nai Jeshurun, which produced this CD. And yes, their Shabbat services are wonderful. However, you don't have to live in Manhattan to partake of this musical feast. "With Every Breath" brings the wonder and beauty of Shabbat to your own home. Enjoy!
Magnificent!.......2001-03-09
At our house, we like to put on some music on Friday afternoon as we get ready for Shabbat (the Sabbath), and I'm always looking for something new and inspiring. I had never heard of either this CD or the synagogue that produced it, and there were no online samples to listen to here, but I thought to myself, "Why not?" and put it on my Wish List anyway. Sure enough, somebody bought me one, and all I can say is, thank you, thank you, thank you!
The words to the songs come, of course, from the Sabbath liturgy. When I first played the CD, I was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few Sephardic arrangements included. There's a mantra-like version of "Hiney Matov" based on a Sufi motif, a Turkish "Yigdal," a traditional Sephardic "Eyn Kelohenu," and a beautifully-chanted "Ki L'Olam Chasdo." That last one is Psalm 136, which, if you look in your Bible, is a long list of lines praising God, alternating with "For His lovingkindness is forever" ("ki l'olam chasdo" in Hebrew). Now, if you read this psalm in King James English, it sounds boringly repetitious. That's because it wasn't mean to be read in "Protestantese," it's supposed to be joyfully SUNG in Hebrew. It's a responsive reading: The cantor does the lines, answered with "ki l'olam chasdo" by the congegation. This tradition is all but lost among Askenazic (European) Jews, but the Sephardim still chant Psalm 136, and when you hear the rendition on this CD, you will chant it, too. The same can be said for "Halleluya," which is Psalm 150 sung in an arrangement by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
In addition to the Sephardic songs, there's a beautiful "Lecha Dodi" medley, two Shlomo Carlebach tunes, and a soul-filled "Ma Gadlu" (Psalm 92:6) arranged by Rabbi Shefa Gold, using "Yah" for the name of God instead of Adonai: "Ma gadlu ma'asekha Yah" -- "how vast are your works, O Creator-God!" Not only does this substitution work gramatically, it also rhymes! All in all, this is superb music. And for those who don't know Hebrew, it comes with a little booklet of explanations -- ten stars!

What a vocie what a cd, a great cabaeret/jazz singer..........2003-12-02
She has a pretty pretty voice, this cd is a classic, it's perfect park & make out music(believe me I know, I'm a 16 year old girl with a reputation at my high school). I love to do my homewaork to this cd or to exercise with it too, it's lovely. The songs are great especially Every Breath I Take, I usually seduce guys alone with that 1st track(almsot the whole football team has heard this cd-haha). Buy it you will love this, if you like Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, or ella, this is on the same lines, but different.
What a gem!.......2001-07-15
Simply the best Marlene's album ever. Her voice is so fresh, and she's singing so sweet, you won't believe your ears.
