Oh man, this is THE metal album! 5 stars all the way. Few may know that 'The Priest that is the Beast" was already pushing , what... seven years of metal already?!? This was the album that finally broke the American membrane, and unleashed them in the West. True die-hards knew of 'British Steel', but for the most part, we only knew of the MTV video of "Another Thing Comin'"
Every song on the album is real... searing... 'Priest' (except for the melodical 'Take These Chains') but listen to it with your metal babe, and I think you won't care to much. Don't worry, they bring it right back with 'Devil's Child' which is one of the greastest 'fillers' I've ever heard.
This album is essential Metal 101 for the collector of the 'Fine Heavy Arts'. Buy it, put it in, and offer your faith to the 'True Metal Gods'.

One life, I'm gonna live it up!.......2007-05-05

...the first words of the incredible, "You've Got Another Thing Coming". Words that everybody can relate to. And, of course, the rest of "Screaming for Vengeance" is just as great. This was one of the first heavy metal CDs I can remember buying, so it makes sense to me at least that I should share with the world my adoration for the classic, the timeless, "Screaming for Vengeance".
Throughout their years, Judas Priest has experimented with progressive metal (which they practically invented with the early classic "Victim of Changes"), speed metal, power metal, NWOBHM, and guitar-synth hair metal (Turbo was virtually as good as Van Halen at their magnum opus!). It's no wonder that with all of this under their belt, and their seniority (KK Downing and Ian Hill founded Priest in '68 or '69), Judas Priest laid the groundwork for countless heavy metal hopefuls to follow. That, and the fact that the first ever dual-lead guitar factor of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton, along with Rob Halford's marvelous vocals (he's up there with Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio as one of the greatest frontmen in heavy metal), these guys are in a class of their own.
Now I will review my favorite tracks of "SFV". The first, four tracks are great enough as it is, and I'll get to that right now.
"The Hellion": A slow yet powerful introduction with a great riff. It has a kind of progressive energy that gets you ready for an excellent rocker.
"Electric Eye": A speedy, epic tune with a great vocal performance by Rob Halford and some blindingly amazing guitar work by KK and Gleen. The quick change at the bridge shows that progressive-styled music played a role in the band.
"Riding on the Wind": Love the energetic drum opening, followed by a fiery and lush guitar riff, along with Rob Halford's unstoppable falsetto wails. More great guitar soloing and this makes for a great cruising tune.
"Bloodstone": Great followup to "Riding on the Wind". The opening guitar riff is very New Wave of British Heavy Metal-styled. After that, the second lead guitar comes in and a funk-metal masterpiece is created. Of course, more soaring guitar soloing and Rob Halford's passionate vocal performance.
"Screaming For Vengeance": Very energetic song, with more soaring falsetto wails and a bit of noticeable progressive styling around the three-minute mark. Ends with a drone that goes into...
"You've Got Another Thing Coming": The single off the album, which makes for a great, driving song. Rob Halford gives a dramatic, vocal performance and the guitar solo is very inspired.

The rest of the songs are great, too, but like I previously stated, it's worth your money even for the first, four songs. I would probably put this as one of the ten greatest heavy metal albums, IMO. The selection is great and if you want an inspired, wonderfully-crafted and energetic heavy metal album, I'm almost certain you're gonna dig this one.

Metal Gods.......2007-04-19

This has to be the defining Judas Preist album and arguably their best, although they would follow this one up with the impressive Defenders of the Faith. You have the widely known rockers like "Electric Eye," "You've Go another Thing Coming," and of course the title track, but all the cuts are impressive. It is Halford at his screaming best and then you have the two greatest Heavy Metal guitar players of all-time, Mr. K.K. Downing and Mr. Glenn Tipton, what more needs to be said about these two legends. If you aspire to be a fan of heavy metal, you must own this CD.

One of the best metal albums EVER.......2007-04-13

Forget all the negative stuff you have ever read about this album . This is the most commercially successful Priest album . 25 + years later it still holds it's own . This album stands , like a sentry , at the gates of metal's golden era . If you like metal , you simply must own this piece of history . There are just too many classic songs on it .

The true definition of 80's metal!!.......2007-03-13

This album captures an era in heavy metal before the genre was broken up into sub genres.This was metal the way it used to be before spandex and eyeliner started ruining everything.This album is fantastic.It's not pantywaist pop metal like Ratt and Poison and it's not hardcore thrash like Metallica and Slayer.It's a great example of early 80's metal.Every song is a winner.You won't find a bad song on here.

I have always considered Screaming For Vengeance to be Judas Priest's best recording and showcases the band at the top of their game.The opening instrumental"The Hellion" will hook you right away and it does'nt let go until the end of the album."Electric Eye" is always an instant classic."You've Got Another Thing Comin" was a huge radio hit.The title track just plain rocks along with "Devil's Child".Another one that stood out was "Fever" because I liked the way it started slow and built up steam."Riding On the Wind" was great because of the famous drum roll at the beginning and "Bloodstone" has those Black Sabbath like evil guitar riffs at the beginning of the song and was my favorite on here.Rob Halford gives his best vocal performance on this album as well.

This album is an enduring classic for all time and has really stood the test of time since its 1982 release.The last great Judas Priest recording at least for a while.No synths,no electric drum kits,no power ballads,just good old fashioned old school traditional heavy metal the way it was intended to be.Every 80's metal fan should own this album.If you don't have it,get it today!!

The Best of Samuel Barber.......2003-12-23

Samuel Barber's most popular orchestral works have seldom been as well-performed as they were by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin. This wonderful EMI recording is a lasting testament to the great things that Slatkin accomplished during his long tenure in St. Louis.

The overture to "The School for Scandal" was an early triumph for Samuel Barber and it was clearly an exciting, dramatic, and sometimes lyrical work. Slatkin is very sensitive and understanding of this music and was able to lead the St. Louis musicians in one of the best performances of this popular work.

Perhaps Barber's best-known work is the "Adagio for Strings," originally part of a string quartet. It bears the distinction of having a world premiere under the legendary Arturo Toscanini. It's interesting to note that Barber had gone to Italy one summer and managed to meet the Maestro, who was on his own summer vacation. Toscanini was impressed with the aspiring, young composer and was soon even more impressed with the "Adagio for Strings." Toscanini chose to premiere the "Adagio" with the NBC Symphony on a broadcast performance. It is one of the most deeply moving compositions by any American composer. I've seldom heard such a powerful performance as this one by Slatkin and the St. Louis orchestra.

Toscanini also premiered the first of Barber's "Essays for Orchestra." Interestingly, however, the first recording of this energetic, colorfully orchestrated work was by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a 12-inch 78-rpm RCA Victor Red Seal recording. Slatkin not only conducted this work but the two essays which followed, the third of which is one of Barber's later works (with rather spectacular, imaginative writing for percussion).

Finally, there is the rather jazzy and compelling "Medea's Dance of Vengeance." One critic referred to this as a boogie woogie for orchestra. It is very syncopated and almost overwhelming in its intensity, particularly in this performance. Anyone familiar with the legend of Medea will recognize that Barber has managed to faithfully depict the horrible events in this memorable work.

I must have listened to this CD a thousand times, and I want to hear it a thousand more. There is so much more to Samual Barber than the one piece he's popular for. Check it out!

This classic disc has been the prime recommendation for Barber's short orchestral pieces since the early 1960s. Remastered onto CD for the first time, and with the addition of some other items conducted by Thomas Schippers, it sounds better than ever. All of Barber's music is blessed with the virtues of impeccable craftsmanship, tunefulness, and, above all, brevity. The most beautiful recording ever made of the Adagio for Strings is at last on CD, thoughtfully coupled with some of the other recordings the young Thomas Schippers made for Columbia Masterworks--of the music of Barber and others--between 1960 and 1965, at the start of his all-too-brief career. Although he was never on personal terms with Barber, Schippers had the ability to put Barber's music across in just the right way, with the perfect blend of energy and lyricism, toughness and warmth, and, above all, the feeling that its sentiment was real, yet ineffably contained. This disc showcases a spectrum of talent from the young Schippers before his tragic death. However, contrary to the other reviews, this is not the best version of the "Adagio" that I have ever heard. The other tracks on the disc are a nice complement and some are hard to find on CD. All in all, a decent buy.

Great music and a great package.......2006-11-10

This reissue of material conducted by Thomas Schippers shows the great style he had conducting Barber's (and Menotti's) work. This CD has been reissued again with a more mundane package as part of the RCA red seal releases. This disc presents background information and pictures that are a delight to the collector and will interest the listener new to this music. Its sound is good for its age and packages material together very well.

An American Classic.......2005-12-03

Like many of the other reviewers, I owned this recording as an LP. Listening to it again in the CD format was a wonderful experience. Barber's lyrical gift was extraordinary. "Romantic" is an inadequate word to describe his music. And it sounds peculiarly American, like Copland's. You can't imagine that a European could have written it. It has too much freedom and sparkle, too much yearning and openess. My only criticism is that this disc omits "Knoxville: Summer of 1915", which I recall was on the old LP, with Leontyne Price as the soloist. Thomas Schippers seems to have been the ideal interpreter of this composer. What a pity that he died young.

Best of Barber.......2004-09-30

The cover and Barber performances come from one of my favorite LPs - an old Odyssey release from the 70s. (Having worn one down, I was lucky to find a new one at a second-hand store - and soon after the CD was, finally, released.) Needless to say, I've listened to these performances frequently but never tire of them. Schippers, who was a close protege of Barber's (his lover?), infuses all of the Barber orchestral pieces with enormous vitality and emotion. The Adagio is one of the two or three best (if not THE best) on record, and the Medea Meditation and Dance of Vengeance is a knockout, more forceful even than Barber's own recording of the music in the Medea Suite for Mercury in the 50s. The School for Scandal Overture is a rollicking and tuneful delight, and the Second Essay is superbly done. My only objection is the CD is a rather scatter-shot collection, a massing culled from the handful of recordings Schippers made for Columbia in the early '60s. The sound is fine, but I'd sure love to hear an SACD version of this recording.

Is there anything to add...?.......2003-09-26

Is there anything to add to the string of glowing reviews of this CD? Perhaps not but I feel an obligation as it has been part of my life since I first bought it in 1967--and wore out several LP versions of it. The combination of composition, interpretation, playing, and engineering of the Barber pieces is unparalleled in my experience; each must be considered as definitive. I particularly favor the Second Essay which comes across as a major work of it era and should appear in concert more often. The contibution by Martina Arroyo is just an extra added attraction in this extended compilation. Legendary!

Don't get ripped off.......2006-10-21

Well...I have only one thing to say about this soundtrack selection. Whoever created this soundtrack was on "CRACK!" and needs to be removed from the music industry. I mean how can the "Main" score in the movie not in the soundtrack selection? This is like going to Disneyland and not see Mickey but Bugs Bunny? (No ofense to Bugs. I love you :p) Too bad I found this review way too late till after I have purchased it. (for $0.01) I think this soundtrack ain't worth listening to or better yet...to be looked at. For the price I've paid, I think I got ripped off.

BTW if anyone know where I can get my hands on the movie version of "When Johnny came marching Home" the acoustic version and also the Man's Chore version. Please share with the world. I think the people of the world will be very happy to find that someone do care for another's love for "GOOD MUSIC". :D

Warning.......2003-04-30

A collection of "ethnic" rap tunes and some poorly played classical pieces are the sum total of this horrible CD. Be warned that in the movie "When Johnny Came Marching Home" is played continuously but is no where to be found in the Soundtrack.
While the soundtrack does have Beethoven's 9th symphony it is played so horribly that it does not make this a worthy purchase.
Buyer beware.

Kamen with a vengeance.......2003-03-13

The best way to describe the music in this score is to listen to Die Hard 2: Die Harder, as a lot of the material used in that score is used in this one. With under 30 minutes of score, most of the music consists of songs and 2 lengthy classical pieces by Brahms and Beethoven. "Goodbye Bonwits" is mainly ominous in nature with hints of the Die Hard theme. "John and Zeus" begins like the last one, but then goes into action mode with racing strings. "Papaya King" contains lots of strings, some low-key pianos, and quotes of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" by the brass. "Take A-Nother Train" quotes the famous Die Hard theme again and contains loads of powerful brass and driving string rhythms. "Waltz of the Bankers" contains ominous strings and flute rhythms played over marching snare drums. "Gold Vault" is almost mickey-moused sounding at the beginning, but then goes into Kamen's usual punctuating strings. "Surfing the Aquaduct" is an exciting action cue that is very reminiscent of many of the action cues in "Die Hard 2: Die Harder", with frantic strings, pounding brass quoting the Die Hard theme, and driving percussion. A nice edition to this score is a classical piece by Alexi Mosolov titled, "The Iron Foundry", which is an exciting orchestral work that sounds a lot like something Michael Kamen would write. The songs can basically be forgotten, except for "Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful. Overall, a great score, while not as good as the other two, still holds its ground and sounds great outside the film.

A poor soundtrack.......2002-03-25

For some reason this soundtrack has completely missed the mark. There are some songs on it, but mostly rap, (Thank god they included Summer In The City by The Loving Spoonful), some classical pieces, but I don't recall Beethoven's Ninth being in the movie, and some additional score. If you're looking for a soundtrack with a cool collection of songs, you're in the wrong place. If you're a "real" soundtrack collector, you'll be disappointed that the "Ants Go Marching" theme, which was featured so prominently in the film, can't be found anywhere on this soundtrack.

About half the CD consists of score, and since the original "Die Hard" album was never commercially released ... the only real reason for buying this album is to get as much of the legendary "Die Hard" score as possible... And now they've even stopped printing this album...

This was the best of the 3.......1999-07-15

This was the only one of the three movies that I think had a good soundtrack. It had some good rap songs like "Summer in the City" and I don't usualy like rap too much. The soundtrack is one of the better ones but still does not get much recognition.

This is how you do it..........2007-07-24

How does a band that came out strong in the shadows of bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne break through to keep their careers? They get better and better and slide into a completely different genre. Let me tell you, I have always loved this band, but I was never really impressed by their writing abilities other than the fact that they could write something catchy and their overall sound was great, but they never impressed me as musicians. I have to say, when I picked up this disc, I was expecting the same and probably knowing then that this would definitely be the last nail in the coffin for these guys. Wow, did they have me fooled! They slid right into more of the metalcore genre this time around and showed everyone that they actually have a lot of musical talent! So, I don't know if they got lessons or if they were just like, "Finally, we don't have to dumb it down anymore!" But yes, this album blew me away from start to finish. If you are expecting the same old DKL from the days of The Darker Side of Nonsense, you aren't going to get that. But if you like some of the newer sound of bands like say Killswitch Engage, or even some of the less mainstream bands like August Burns Red or something, this is definitely right up your alley. ENJOY!

Solid, but still not quite great.......2007-06-07

Westchester County, New York-based quintet Hinge formed 1997, then changed their name to Dry Kill Logic in time to release their debut, "The Darker Side Of Nonsense" in 2001, and a sophomore effort called "Dead And Dreaming" three years later. Although the latter was partially influenced by metalcore, both of those first two albums were predominantly nu-metal (a very popular genre in the early 2000s). Now, in 2006, Dry Kill Logic's officially complete: Album number three, "Of Vengeance and Violence," is almost straight metal/moshcore (though technically speaking, it is probably best described as nu-ish, moshcore-influenced groove metal.)

As a result, "Of Vengeance and Violence" is doubtlessly DKL's heaviest and best record yet. It sports an abundance of jagged, abrasive rhythms, propulsive, industrial-strength, sometimes thrashy riffing, good vocals, and hefty drumming (including a few blast beats -- Phil Arcuri's drumming seems to grow more complex and furious as the album plays.) There are several flashes of brilliance sprinkled on throughout the album, such as the fiery, turgid guitar lead, memorable groove, and ripping, even borderline-wailing solo behind "4039," the blowtorch riffs, bullying rhythm, and forceful double bass/blast beat pummel that anchors the heaviest tracks ("Boneyard" and "Dead Man's Eyes"), and the deft, almost blistering rave-up, "Lying Through Your Teeth." But surprisingly, the album's biggest highlights are definitely the two soft numbers: "Kingdom of the Blind" and "In Memoria Di." The former is a power ballad of sorts where frontman Cliff Rigano takes over and shows the world his astonishingly great, proper-singing abilities; and the latter song is an acoustic-strummed, lighter-waving set closer with more exceptional vocals.

At the end of the day though, there's an indefinable "something" that seems missing from "Of Vengeance and Violence." For one, most of the heavier fare blends together too much. Plus, a substantial amount of the record seems a bit flat, flaccid, and/or formulaic - catchy, technically proficient, and sufficiently heavy, but lacking a noticeable flare, backbone or timeless innovation, thus giving off an air of somewhat tired or uninspired songwriting. And whatever the problem may be, one thing is for sure: The members of Dry Kill Logic obviously put a respectable amount of work into "OVAV," because this is by far their finest, and most accomplished, realized, and relevant release to date, but the album (and the band, in general) are still a ways behind most of their peers, and miles behind groups like Lamb of God, Chimaira, and Machine Head. It does not speak well for DKL that they are three full-length albums into their career and have gotten only so far. This is a very competent band, they have all of the tools they need to get the job done, but they just haven't completely done it yet. Hopefully they will get another shot at greatness before the music industry (and the rest of the world) gives up on them.

Lest this review comes across as too harsh, it should be noted that "Of Vengeance and Violence" isn't a bad album by any stretch of the imagination -- in fact, this is a good, solid record. But is it worth buying? Well, that all depends on your loyalty to this band and/or this genre. If you are already a big Dry Kill Logic fan, or if you just can't seem to get enough of this whole moshcore/metalcore/New Wave Of American Heavy Metal scene, then by all means, pick this album up. And "Of Vengeance and Violence" is still worth hearing even if neither of those apply to you, just don't expect too much.

third time's a charm.......2007-04-21

This is by far DKL's best record to date. They have matured by leaps and bounds and have grown both musically and lyrically. They have not sacrificed any of their heaviness, but are getting better at writing great hooks. They usually have some softer songs on their albums, and this is no exception. Song number 8 may be my favorite DKL song. It is really catchy. If you are new to DKL, this is the one to get first. If you like it, you will like the other two cds, but their debut is very chaotic and immature compared to their newer stuff.

I'm a fan of DKL after hearing their last alubm, The Dead and Dreaming. All I can say for this latest release is not as good as the last outing. For fans of DKL only....

Dry Kill Logic's third album.......2006-12-17

In my opinion, there is no way Dry Kill Logic could possibly do anything bad. This is their third album as Dry Kill Logic, previously Hinge, and it's another amazing one. As you listen, you can tell they're growing more comfortable exploring their talents. With a few tracks you can see them get away from their normally metal-core songs. I would have had a problem with this if it wasn't executed so perfectly. The album flows well and there is never a time where I would want to skip a track. Pick up all 3 albums and support Dry Kill Logic. They don't get nearly enough attention, especially for being so damn good.

Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

a great selection of Barber works.......2005-01-25

The diverse pieces on this CD give us a wonderful example of Samuel Barber's genius, and leaves no doubt as to his place in the hierarchy of American music, from the dramatic and theatrical opening and closing works, to the poignant, exquisite "Knoxville: Summer of 1915", to the much loved "Adagio for Strings", a composition even people who never listen to classical music are familiar with.
"The School for Scandal Overture" has always been a favorite of mine, and "Knoxville", so beautifully sung by soprano Sylvia McNair, uses the words of James Agee, that describes small town living in days gone by, in a profoundly touching way.

The "First Essay for Orchestra" was premiered along with "Adagio for Strings" by the grand maestro Arturo Toscanini in an NBC broadcast when Barber was only 28, and was the beginning of Barber's many huge successes, both critical and popular.
The "Second Essay" was written for Bruno Walter in 1942, and is much more abstract than the "First Essay", and is the least familiar piece on this CD for me, and the "Adagio for Strings" is given an appropriately delicate, somber performance, contrasted by "Medea's Dance of Vengeance", which builds to a fantastic rhythmic finale.

Barber's music stirs the emotions, enchants with his strong melodic lines, and always has that uniquely American "sound", music that could not have been composed anywhere but the U.S.A.
Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra do justice to these terrific works, and Ms. McNair is perfect in "Knoxville", which is one of the signature pieces in her repertoire.
Recorded in 1991, the booklet insert has liner notes on Barber's life, the text of "Knoxville", a small bio of McNair, and full recording info. Total playing time is 65'29.

Pure Americana.......2002-02-06

This is a terrific collection of works by Barber. Like Copland, Barber's pieces evoke nostalgic images of America, but their overall character is delicate and pensive. The opening overture is as delightful as a summer picnic. It is a perfect lead-in to the soft reminiscences of Knoxville, poignantly rendered by Sylvia McNair. The outpouring of grief from the 1st Essay and the heartbreak of the Adagio are adroitly interrupted by the anger & agitation of the 2nd Essay. Medea's Dance is an appropriate farewell closer. All in all, a well programmed disc with 65 minutes of great music and Telarc's unmatched sonics. Easily recommended!

I agree with earlier reviewers regarding this recording of "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" - one of Barber's most beautiful and hauntingly nostalgic works - is exceptional. Sylvia McNair is one of (if not THE) best interpreters of this piece that I've ever come across.

It begins with an eerie backwards fiddle, then the beats kick in, banging for dear life, and the cool, authoritative voice of Emma Härdelin floats over the top. It's the third Garmarna album, fulfilling every promise they'd made on their first two records. The ancient and modern achieve an almost perfect balance here, the original material sounding as if it should be centuries old. Blood, guts, violence, love, they're all here, every aspect of the human condition. While the band conjures up musical magic, it's Härdelin who emerges as the sorceress, the true star, with a voice that just seems to bewitch. Put it all together, and you have something that's more than the sum of its impressive parts. This is the record you always knew Garmarna could make. --Chris Nickson

This is one album you have to own!.......2006-01-16

This was my very first Garmarna CD. I bought this album by blind dumb luck, having never even heard of Garmarna, and I was completely enthralled by it. After close to 5 years it is still my favorite album. Emma Härdelin has gorgeous stirring vocals, and the beats will move you whether you understand the language or not. Their music is both traditional and contemporary with a little tribal edge mixed in. You will want to play Vengeance over and over. After hearing the unique music of Garmarna you will feel compelled to beg and plead for them to tour near you, or at least I did.

Who cares if you can't speak Swedish? You'll have no trouble feeling the ancient stories and deep emotional resonance of this exceptional, splendid, wonderful CD. I'm an unabashed fan.

From the heart-pounding opening track to the off-kilter rhythms of "Stomped Bread" to the lushly evocative tone of "Herr Holkin", "Vengeance" presents a beautifully rounded portrait by musicians who successfully bridge some of the oldest poetry around (including a stop in the 11th century to scoop up Hildegard von Bingen's spare verse) with modern instrumentation. This is not easy listening music, by any means. The drums are tribal, the rhythms industrial, and the direct, clear voice of Emma Hardelin drives all of it with a beauty that is fierce, but never harsh. Please make room in your collection for this CD!

Vengeance Comes Dark and Bloody from Garmarna.......2005-03-11

Garmarna's growth over the course of three albums, from 1994's Vittrad to this disc, released in 1999, is amazing. Starting off as a simple folk/rock outfit, Garmarna has, to paraphrase the words of one band member, evolved from a folk band into something else. That something else includes rollicking electronic grooves and an aural soundscape that was only hinted at on previous efforts by this Swedish outfit.
The album gets off to a heavy start with Gamen. It then crashes to a halt into the Pre-Medieval Industrial groove of Euchari, originally a hymn penned by abbess Hildergard von Bingen in the middle ages.
Another track of note includes the dark bloody title track, both eerie and unnerving at the same time, with lyrics (though sung in Swedish, the English lyrics are included) about murder, drinking blood and wild beasts. Of course, this is typical of Garmarna's lyrical fare. Only here the music really provides the appropriate backdrop to the disturbing traditional tunes.
As a whole, the album loses its intensity as the disc wears on, but don't let this keep you from getting into other wonderful tracks such as Herr Holkin, Polska (the one tune closest to their previous work) or Sorgsen Ton.
I would like to hear more rootsy stuff but this is a great disc nonetheless. It would be nice to hear an album that combined the best of their early folk work with the electronica of this album. One can only hope. In the meantime, immerse yourself in the world of Garmarna -- you won't regret it.

From the first kick-off of astounding techno merged with ancient Scandinavian to the last, soaring note, Garmarna manages to make an album which brings Swedish legends to life. My favorites on the CD have to be the opening hair-raiser, "Gamen," the CD's title track with its unforgettable opening sound of a heart beating, "Vedergallningen," and the melodic "Euchari." And it is obvious from a glance at the CD's lyrics (sadly only printed in English) that Garmarna wastes no time on toning down the blood, violence, and magic of its selected folk tales. Another plus is Emma's beautiful, soaring voice, but even when it's absent the instrumentalists do a wonderful job, as evidenced by the song's only non-vocal track, "Polska."

Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24

This set is extremely valuable, not only as an overview of Dame Joans career but because it contains three complete LP sets that have been very hard to find. The sets are the 2 LP French opera (operetta) set, the Mozart album and the Wagner album. Although some of these do not show her to her best advantage (the Wagner set) they all have some very beautiful things and the French items are superb. The annotations and photos are interesting as well and there are some piano songs with Bonynge that are released here for the first time along with a scene from a live Covent Garden Norma.

Rareties available on CD at last!.......2006-03-29

While Joan Sutherland has recorded a number of impressive aria collections throughout the many years of her recording career, they tend to get lost in the shuffle of the countless reissues Decca/London has endlessly repackaged. While some of the original collections have appeared intact on CD--"The Art of the Prima Donna," "The Age of Bel Canto," "Love Live Forever" (her operetta collection that was originally titled "The Golden Age of Operetta"), to name a few--others are currently represented in the CD catalogue by only a few selections on discs that also include excerpts from complete opera recordings or duplicates of selections from other original collections. As a result, it has been impossible to assemble a CD collection of her recordings without a LOT of duplication, and some of the most interesting collections are still unavailable (e.g. "Command Performance" and "Serate Musicale").

While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.

I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.

I first heard of Dame Sutherland while on the internet while listening to a internet radio station. I was instantly a fan, her control, technique, and tone is perfectly executed and rivals the equally fantastic Maria Callas. She has a powerful voice and presence that will evoke every emotion from her listeners. Highly recommended to all Opera Diva fans.

WHO ELSE CAN SING LIKE THIS TODAY?.......2005-04-10

This is Decca's second multi disc evaluation of this fantastic singer's long career and many recordings. True that a lot on the first set is duplicated here, but there are a few exceptions here and there that make it a worthy addition. Of particular interest are the very early items of Handel and Italian baroque arias, some forgotten song recordings and a live performance of the duet from Norma. It can't be said too many times - who can sing like this today? For sheer vocalism it's hard to find anyone on the same wavelength. This set will give very young opera goers an idea of what they missed.

A bit difficult to get into..........2007-07-30

This is death metal at it's most warped and confusing, imo. The vocal delivery is so distorted that you can barely pick up the words with coherency. However, if you can adjust to this you will find that you are listening to one of the most aggressive metal albums ever produced. It is so good that I have decided to buy some of Nile's other offerings. Please, take the time to consider this one carefully. If death metal is not your bag, then don't buy this one. But, if you are getting into the scene somewhat then Nile's "Black Seeds of Vengeance" will overpower your desire to retreat.

Holy Epic Brutal Egypt Death.......2006-09-28

Nile has always been a favorite band of mine for at least the past year and a half. There are many reasons why that is. Every drummer the band has had is extremely talented at the blastbeat, and Derek Roddy does the honors of blasting the drum sets on this album. The guitar melodies are like none other. You'd think that a band who played music like this would hail from the Middle East or Africa, but they actually hail from South Carolina. Impressed I must say. I also hear people complaining about the vocalists. True, they may not be decipherable, but with a band of talented musicians, you'll probably grow over it and accept it.

"The Black Flame" is a more epic song, while tracks like "Black Seeds of Vengeance" and "Chapter Of Transforming Into A Snake" is pure speed and blast fury.

Don't miss out on this if you dig death metal.

Amazing.......2006-05-21

This is the first Nile cd I bought. I had heard various song of a number of there albums so I knew what I was getting into. This cd mixes brutality,technicality, and atmosphere all into one. The musician ship is excellent Sanders and Wade shredd and riff away on their guitars while cheif spieres provides a nice thick bass line. The drumming done by Derrek Roddy( of Hate Eternal) is amazing with insane blast beats and great fills. The songs can range from brutal like Black Seeds of vengance and Masterbating the God of War to sorowfull and epic like To Dream of Ur.This cd is a must buy for fans of death metal.

DEATH METAL !.......2005-12-13

Well, this was my first death metal cd, so it has a special place in my heart. It's not my favorite, but I'll always remember it as the first time I listened to a full album of such heavy music. All I knew was, I needed to get a death metal cd, any one would do. Nile was one of the few death bands the store carried, so I picked this one up. It delivered. If you like your death mixed with egyptian theme, then Nile is the band for you. I find it epic sounding.

Roddy-Riffic!!.......2005-10-23

Hello! Awesome album, very solid all the way through, and doesn't become boring like alot of Death Metal albums can. My favourite songs would have to be Masturbating the War God, and Multitude of Foes, the latter which took Dallas Toler-Wade about a year to arrange!

However, I am really writing this just to clear something up. Alot have been praising Pete Hammoura's drum work on this album, and while he is a great drummer, it may interest you to know that the only song he actually played on this album was 10 - To Dream of Ur. The rest of the albums drumwork was taken care of by the legendary Derek Roddy. He had never heard the material, and yet, managed to get every track down in just 27 hours!! Awesome work, and he is very often overlooked, as the album just credits him as playing 'Additional Drums'. WTF? Pete Hammoura played ONE song, therefore, making him the one who filled in some 'Additional Drums'. Just wanted to clear that up, that's all.
