What The &$@# Is This? Has He Gone Completely Mad? .......2007-07-28
On first inspection of this covers album put out by Ozzy you may immediately assume the worst.
If you decide to give it a listen you will find that Ozzy sings some of his favourite songs on this collection or cash cow depending how you see it, however most of it is devoid of the emotive quality that I love so much from the Ozzman. The music is a little bland, except on the more rocking cuts.
The man's love of the Beatles is represented with a tender take on "In My Life". Trust Ozzy to pick the most famous Lennon song with a couple of F-Bombs in it. My favourite tune on here is Ozzy's superb take on "Sunshine of Your Love. HIs voice is great on that one.
All in all an interesting yet odd collection of songs all covered with Ozzy's "sod it if they don't like it" attitude. Don't start your collection here.
it's okay, but far from great..........2007-05-11
I'm an Ozzy fan...I like his music better than his vocals, but I still call myself a fan...and I'm a completist as well and I have to have a complete collection, so that was one of the 2 main reasons why I got this CD. The other reason was because I normally enjoy cover albums, such as "The Spaghetti Incident", "Acid Eaters" and "Yeah!", even if critics don't like `em, fans feel let down and even if sometimes this kind of records end up packing more than one stink bomb.
Well, in the case of Ozzy's cover record, I think it is one of those mixed bags: you'll find tracks that are very much enjoyable, but chances are you're also gonna find more than a few that are gonna make you raise an eyebrow...the rockers are clearly the best, while the ballads and the mid tempo numbers are...well...not quite there...most of the songs are played in a quite respectful way with regards of the originals, although there are a few changes here and there that might not appeal to those who liked the originals.
The CD starts with "Rocky Mountain Way" from Joe Walsh, and while the song is not exactly a highlight, it gets things started with a nice, rollicking pace. Then comes The Beatles's "In my Life", the first of 3 Beatle related tunes included here, and clearly the best of the bunch, by far: this song wouldn't sound out of place in one Ozzy's last 2 solo records, and the influence is obvious. I like it, even if I'm not a Beatles fan.
"Mississippi Queen" works pretty good, especially because of the performances of Ozzy's excellent supporting band: Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) on guitar, Mike Bordin (Faith No More) on drums and Chris Wyse on bass. Actually, I'd have to say that the band are probably the heros here, stealing the show from Ozz. "Go Now" is not a good song to begin with, and this cover doesn't really do anything to improve my opinion of it...
"Woman" is simply...I don't care for the original, I don't care for this cover... "21st Century Schizoid Man" works great: I mean, who can claim those lyrics as his own if not Ozzy?? I never thought I'd hear Ozzy singing a Bowie song (yeah, I know the original version was done by Mott the Hoople, but Bowie wrote it, didn't he?) and the result is...funny, I guess...I'm not particularly crazy about "All the young dudes", the original or any of its hundreds of versions, but for some reason that I can't quite pin point right now, I find this one to be O.K...not great, but O.K...
Can anyone explain to me the presence of "For what is worth" here? This one really doesn't make much sense to me...it's not terrible, but it's not that great, either...the same can be said about "Good Times"...not very good...I was extremely apprehensive about hearing Ozzy's version of one of my favorite tunes, meaning "Sunshine of your Love" and...the track is O.K, a weird intro notwithstanding, but Ozzy's vocals really don't help much...once again, the band steals the spotlight, big time...
"Fire" is a great choice: like "21st Century Schizoid Man", "Fire" makes perfect sense in an Ozzy album, if only because of its lyrics, but in truth, the song sounds pretty cool..."Working Class Hero" is...a little odd...again, the lyrics ring true and feel right for Ozzy to sing, but there's something about this tune that doesn't quite click for me...it's not bad, but I don't particularly like it...
And finally, Ozzy's take on my ALL TIME favorite Rolling Stones song, "Sympathy for the Devil", is pretty respectable, but buyer beware: this is one of the tunes were Ozzy and his band experiment a little with the structure, so you might be a little taken aback... I thought it was fairly enjoyable, and once again, the band steals the show...and who else but Ozzy (and the Stones, of course...) could sing these lyrics? I don't like it as much as the version that GN'R did, but still...
Yeah,, we all know that Ozzy and Sharon have done quite a few controversial (to put it mildly...) and highly debatable business decisions in recent years, and many fans feel that this is yet one more: adding 4 tunes to a CD that was already available (albeit in a boxed set) rang as a rip off to many...and while I do agree with that to some extent, I must say for the record that I personally benefited from that decision, since I hadn't (and I still don't have) any intention of purchasing the box set, which I'm sorry to say, it's quite lackluster...and of course, releasing this also allowed the Osbournes to buy time until the next Ozzy studio album (Black Rain, scheduled for release May 22, 2007). Oh, yeah, the DVD side...not worth the price of admission, really: the full album again in 3D surround, which is pointless for those who (like me) don't have a surround home theater, a video for "In my Life" which is funny but far from essential, and a totally dull, boring and pointless segment called "Dinner with Ozzy and friends" which is little more than Lemmy and Ozzy babbling on in their incoherent, unintelligible way, and to make matters worse, it features the annoying "beeps" of censorship for bad language... I DIDN'T even want the dual disc to begin with, but for some reason that I can't begin to understand, its price was LOWER than the price of the regular CD...oh well...
Bottom Line, I think that this CD is probably meant for a mainstream audience: those who followed Ozzy because of his TV show and not because of his music. You can play this full CD to your mom and she'll probably enjoy it as much (or more...) as you, which I find to be extremely disturbing...there's something wrong with the world when your mom asks you to turn ON the volume of the latest CD from an artist that she has ALWAYS loathed... anyway...this is a mixed bag for longtime Ozzy fans, but it'll probably make for a nice evening of music listening with your parents...I'll leave it up to you (and your folks, haha...) to make up your minds...but I'll tell you this: I'm a longtime fan, and I have to say that this record doesn't do much for me and it's little more than a curiosity item for the mainstream audience...
Drives me crazy!.......2007-01-11
My husband drives me crazy playing this cd! But he seems to love it! He said he highly recommends it!
Original Ozzy.......2006-11-10
Its true that other have played the songs of Under Cover, but it is also
true, at least in my opinion, that Ozzy has revamped these songs so
much that they must be considered as original Ozzy. For example,
Sympathy for the Devil has so many subtle changes within it that it is
really a new song, and a really great recording at that, as compared
to the original Rolling Stone rendition. If you don't like Under
Cover, then you never liked Ozzy to begin with, so why plaster this
area with reviews from non-likers of Ozzy?
Not as bad as Pat Boone's Metal CD.......2006-10-29
Here's my take on Ozzy's cover CD.....you can look at it two ways. If you're expecting him to stick to his own kind of music, meaning metal, you'll think this is a joke. (Although not nearly as bad a joke as when Pat Boone did that metal CD.) But the other way of looking at it is, Ozzy is over 50 and has EARNED the right to record a CD of some of his early favorite songs......if only for his own amusement. If you don't like it, then don't buy it! Simple. Maybe he'd like to turn on some of his young fans to musicians he admired when he was a nobody.....like the Beatles, Stones, Cream, King Crimson, Mountain, Arthur Brown etc. Maybe his fans think he should be doing covers of Zeppelin, Priest, Motorhead, Maiden etc. (I admit Ozzy should have considered covering "Dazed and Confused," "In-agada-da-vida," "Born to be Wild," "Purple Haze," "Summertime Blues," "Comfortably Numb" etc) But Ozzy is more a fan of the Beatles and Cream than he is of Judas Priest and Zeppelin. So he should have the freedom to do what he wants. The fact that he likes old Moody Blues and Buffalo Springfield and Mott the Hoople was mildly suprising to me.
What works on here? "Fire" by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown works....so does "21st Century schizoid man" by King Crimson. Lennon's "Working class hero" is pretty appropriate too. The CONCEPT of the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" works (the Stones were satanic before Sabbath was born)......but his delivery doesn't. He butchers the Beatles songs, and most of the others are pretty bad too. ("Mississippi Queen" and "Rocky Mountain Way" are passable.)
So I give this CD only 2 stars because of "Fire" and "21st century Schizoid Man" and "Working class hero." The rest of it is lame. But hey Ozzy, if it made you happy.....it's better than acid for you these days.

Customer Reviews:
Oh the songs in his head.......2007-03-07
I think the reviewers, who are definetly Ozzy and Black Sabbath root fans miss the point of this cd. This is a goof for Ozzy and these are probably the songs that he has really liked over the years and probably listen to either outside or inside his head. He just had to sing them. Lighten up and enjoy them. It's Ozzy the master of the absurd
Great Job, Ozzy!!.......2007-01-04
I wonder why Ozzy took so long to release this kind of material. All songs are just what you'd expect Ozzy to cover. The Beatles' 'Woman' by itself is already worth the money. And Ozzy singing 'Sunshine of Your Love' in his own fashion is just marvelous. If you're an old Ozzy fan you must get this album. And don't get me wrong, but this is not for the regular head bangin' teens, indeed.
Ozzy is a legend.......2006-07-10
While I can admit this isn't one of his best albums so far, it is still worth the money. Ozzy is a true lenend and this album contains some enjoyable songs. Everbody hasn't been used to his incredibly high standard of music that he has been producing for the last thirty-five years, so when he releases an album that isn't quite up to his usual standard they jump on it and bag it. This won't be his last album, he spring back with an incredible album and everybody will be ready to suppport him again. He truly is the master of metal.
KARA - OZZY.......2006-06-15
Wow, listening to this conjures up visions of a drunken bar patron forcing his way onstage with a covers band and tipping them till they let him sing. How else to explain this flat sounding re-working of classic rock songs from such a seasoned vocalist like Ozzy? One needs only to the current Def Leppard "Yeah!" CD to realize just how lame Ozzy's "Under Cover" is.
Granted, this started life as 1/4 of a box set, where listening to it was an exercise in context. But to hear it as a stand alone document is a marker of declining greatness, and what one supposes is the inability of the Osbourne entourage to warn Ozzy that this really wasn't a very good idea. Ozzy's cover of "Women," a standard by John Lennon, is warbley wandering, a song in search of pitch and devoid of emotional impact. "Rocky Mountain Way" loses its uniqueness. Only on a mere three songs does Ozzy measure up to the material chosen here, and they are "Sympathy For The Devil" (he obviously relates to the subject matter), "Working Class Hero" (singer matches song) and "21'st Century Schizoid Man" (a natural counterpoint to "Iron Man"). Which means that "Under Cover" would have made a heck of a bonus EP for a full length original Ozzy CD. But as a stand alone? Strictly naptime.
Yikes!.......2006-05-24
While I am of the opinion that much of Ozzy's recent work is quite good (I Just Want You, Perry Mason, Junkie, Gets me Through), this is not. A truly awful product.
While this is supposed to be a tribute to classic songs Ozzy treasures, most of the arrangments are so bad it may discourage younger listeners from hearing the originals versions. If you haven't heard King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", Mountain's "Mississippi Queen", Arthur Brown's "Fire", or (god forbid) the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil" do yourself a favor.

The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24
This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.
Gorgeous.......2001-11-25
Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.
Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17
Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

GREAT TE KANAWA !.......2004-02-19
THIS IS A GODD OVERVIEW OF KIRI TE KANAWA`S TALENT,THIS COMPILATION INCLUDES GREAT OPERA ARIAS,AMERICAN SONGBOOK CLASSICS,MAORI SONGS AND MORE,DIGITALLY REMASTERED. REALLY ENJOYABLE.

What a great anthology of 1980s R&B ballads........2007-07-25
If you (like me) grew up in or were around during the 1980s then this 2-CD set is not to be passed up. Classic hits by The Gap Band, Teena Marie, Regina Belle, The Manhattans, Freddie Jackson, Billy Ocean and other great R&B artists which became Quiet Storm staples are all included here...with crystal-clear sound quality. Play it to relive all those memories or to set the mood for love with that special someone...either way, it's GUARANTEED to please.

Customer Reviews:
It's a real masterpiece.......2002-03-15
You won't be disapointed by these great cover-songs. Joe's voice is incomparable as always. His unique voice can only adorn all these songs. "Street Of Dreams" is a wonderful Rainbow song, which turned to a magical, hipnotic sound, Joe's voice can take you away from this world into the mystery time...
EXCELLENT COLLECTION HAND PICKED BY JLT!.......1998-06-23
This CD is a must for any true JLT fan! From Fandango to Rainbow--and anywhere in between--the music is great! His chops are still in tact!
YOU WON'T BE DISSAPPOINTED IF YOU'RE A FAN OR NON FAN.......1998-05-13
AS THE TITLE SUGGESTS THE WHOLE ALBUM IS COVER TUNES. JLT EVEN RE-DOES A RAINBOW CLASSIC "STREET OF DREAMS" IN A NEW AND INTERESTING ARRANGEMENT. BAD CO'S "DEAL WITH THE PREACHER" IS EXCELLENT AS IS THE DEEP PURPLE CLASSIC "HUSH" WHILE I DON'T AGREE WITH ALL OF JLT'S CHOICES (SUPPOSEDLY FANS CHOSE THEM?) THE ALBUM IS VERY WELL PRODUCED AND JOE LYNN DELIVERS AS ALWAYS. I'M A BIG RAINBOW AND JOE LYNN FAN AND I WAS NOT DISAPOINTED.

Greatest Cover Album Ever.......2001-08-01
Joe Lynn Turner delivers a cover album that only he could deliver. This album rocks from the first song We're An American Band to the last song Sunshine of Your Love. The songs range from absolute rock classics, rearranged soul classics, and real nice remake of the Rightous Brothers classic Unchained Melody. Never before have you heard such a strong collection of songs, heart and soul. This is a 10 out of 5 Stars. A must for all Joe Lynn Turner Fans or not!!

Customer Reviews:
Dramatic hip hopppppp.......2006-06-01
This is electronica, they sound a lot like Spore, mixing up old sounds like classic sounds of people saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen. Your attention please." Classic songs remixed, like Que Sera. Some are very short/interludes. Short songs are 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13, 18
(1.) This is an intro. Weird talking. "Where is the tailor? Just tell me where he is!" (2.) !!!!!! This is a remix of Que Sera, infused with old men's voices from maybe the '50's, it is a great song. This song is good for everyone, whether you like classic movies, classic rock, or electronica. (3.) !! This is entirely jazzy hip instrumental except for the first part.
(5.)!!! Hypnosis theme. Very mellow and dramatic.
(9.) Good, mellow and slow like their other stuff. FYI 6 minutes long.
12!!!!. Charlotte Savory does a great job on this. This is like the score to
The Chillest Trip Hop.......2006-04-30
I am hurt to see that no one has yet reviewed this album. This guy is a mad sampler, fusing voice clips and looped muzak to create some truly chilled out tunes. I was very dismayed to see he's released only one album, so I will have to do some research to see what happened to this dude. If you like relaxing, grooving hip hop, pick it up.
