Product Description

New York City, 1896. A man walks into a bar. He sits down, orders a beer, and laughs long and hard at the bartender's newest story. It's a good tale, though too bawdy to repeat at home. The next day he goes into the same bar, gets his beer, and drops his change into a phonograph. He's listening through rubber tubes to a man telling a story similar to the bartender's. Without warning Anthony Comstock's defenders of decency charge into the bar, push him aside, destroy the record, and escort the bar's proprietor to jail for promoting indecency. The records on this CD are the few that Comstock's men missed. Scarcity and suppression have kept them silent for a century. Put aside the modern myth of a more genteel era: these late-Victorian performances are indecent even by--especially by--today's standards. And while not for mixed company, they spoke to many in the coarse language and crude humor of daily experience. They were stories told readily in the bar; yet they became legally actionable offenses when fixed in wax and played on a phonograph in that same bar. These newly-discovered recordings play like soundtracks to the moving images of prize fighters, scarf dancers, and kissing lovers flickering on the kinetoscope--the other nickel entertainment in the bar. The records and films were produced in the same years, in the same studios, by the same people. They were enjoyed in tandem by the same audiences. They were accused of violating the same standards of decency in communities where they were profitably exhibited. And together, they presaged the clashes between morals and mass media that would erupt regularly during the century to follow. This CD presents these extraordinary recordings in their unexpurgated entirety. It allows us to hear uncut and uncensored what new technology made possible and the protectors of public morals made illegal: "indecent" performances driven out of business, off the public stage, and into the privacy of unmixed company in the home.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is a peice of HIStory!!!.......2007-07-13

It is nothing short of amazing that these crackly bits of recorded history survived the indecency raids of the early 1900's!! The liner notes contained in this c.d. are actually a book worthy of its own section in the bookstore, and contain the fascinating history of these recordings and drama and scandal which preceded the discovery that men were recording them!!! When you listen to these jokes, limericks and stories that were recorded in backrooms and hideaways due to their scandalous contents- you will not believe what you are hearing and you will understand why (even 100 years later!)a parental advisory label adorns its cover!!! SO hide the kids and pick up a copy of Actionable Offenses. It is hours worth of fun!!!

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Una colonna sonora strepitosa.......2007-06-09

5 out of 5 stars Barry In Top Form.......2003-11-15

I've long been a fan of John Barry and have followed his work from the early 60's. When I think of his best efforts, my thoughts keep drifting back to Indecent Proposal. He he gives us some of the most beautiful film music ever. The 25 minute suite of melodies represent Mr. Barry at his peak. The music fits the film perfectly and though Wood Harreslon almost singlehandedly ruins a potentially good movie, John Barry comes to the rescue. I'm forever grateful for all the wonderful music this talented composer has given us.

5 out of 5 stars Barry's best work.......2003-03-30

Perhaps best known for his work in the Bond movies, John Barry has become one of the most widely known musical composers. Barry offers any one of us a beautiful escape from the pop world dominated by teen "divas."

His 25 minutes of original music on the Indecent Proposal soundtrack is simply his best work. Like many of his works with Bond, his music simply makes the movie. It covers all ranges of emotion in what is sometimes a subtly twisted but ultimately sweet love story.

Other songs from Bryan Ferry, the Pretenders and Seal make this CD well worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars John Barry fan.......2002-10-20

I remember watching this movie and hearing the instumental music for the first time. I instantly recognized the music and was drawn to it, like responding to the voice of a dear and long-time friend. I have been a fan of John Barry's music for awhile now, starting with the movie "Dances with Wolves", then discovering my favorite "Somewhere in time". Buy this CD, if only for the 25 minute insrumental suite by John Barry. It will stir your heart and soul. I look forward to hearing the rest of his music.

5 out of 5 stars Compliments the Movie to the "T".......2002-01-11

Well I have to say that it was John Barrys instrumental that made me buy this CD immediatley. I remember walking into a music store and they were playing the 25 min. suite I could not leave the store until the music was over, I knew immediatly that it was from this movie because I remember how poignant the music was. I was dissapointed in Sade "No Ordinary Love" was not on the CD but "If I'm not in love with you" as well as others made up for that omission. I have bought it several times over the past few years as gifts for friends that enjoy instrumental suites and have since researched and found John Barry's other collections such as; "Out of Africa", "Scarlet Letter" and "Somewhere in Time"

Happy Listening

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Praised by knob twiddlers around the globe for his schizophrenic, digitalized, genre-bending soundscapes that were first heard on Ginuwine's "Pony" in 1996, Timbaland could be expected to employ the same hit-making formula, right? Well, yes and no. On Timbaland's third release with rhyme collaborator Magoo, his drum programming and beat structures continue their funkified, futuristic trajectories on "Humin," an ode to club hoppers who forget to use their Listerine, and "People Like Myself," with its off-kilter Middle Eastern samples. However, the jury's been out on the nasal-toned, Q-Tip-sound-alike Magoo since 1998's Tim's Bio, and Tim's commitment to introduce a retooled Magoo to the rap public's jaded consciousness is part of the problem with this release. As the featured emcee on a large bulk of the tracks, Magoo's mic skills get outclassed most of the time by guests like Jay-Z and Tung Twista on "Party People" and Ludacris on "Considerate Brother."

Magoo's shortcomings notwithstanding, Indecent Proposal is a must purchase for many reasons. It provides contemporary beatmakers with some more lessons in futuristic beat construction (peep "Indian Carpet"); there's a hot collaboration featuring singer-songwriter Beck in a duet with the late Aaliyah ("I'm Music"), and more lovely ballads by Aaliyah ("Love Me"). Lastly, Tim claims that he will not be releasing any more albums after this one so here's your chance to cop the last full-length recording from one of the most eclectic producers in the contemporary rap and R&B game. --Dalton Higgins

Timbo does his job 100% bringin out full potential on every track. U should def. cop this record if u in2 pushin the lines of hip hop music 2day n lookin 4 a new sound.

5 out of 5 stars Timmy is King.......2005-07-21

Come on yall giving him such harsh reviews. For his beats alone you could give the album a 3.5 - 4.

On this album he uses sounds from all over the world making his appeal beyond the traditional rap listener. Once you have heard rap enough, it's easy to get sick of or criticize any rapper just about. I like lots tim and mag's random party lyrics even though i admit he is not the greatest to say the least.. If you couldn't tell though, they are not trying to be concious or gangster, or bog you down with drama in their life.. they make feel good music and they are damn good at it...

all i'm saying is.. try to find another damn rapper who sounds anything like Timbaland.

3 out of 5 stars Timbaland's B-side's.......2003-06-08

Timbaland has always had a talent for producing some of the hottest tracks known to hit the air-waves. Such artists to have the privilege of working with the great Timbaland include Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Nas and many more, the list goes on and on.

This album doesn't really live up to the expectations of some, proving that Timbaland hasn't given his all on this album and on the contrary deciding to let his "B-side" tracks control the majority of this album.

Fortunately, Timbaland and Magoo do have some hidden beauties in the form of "All Y'all" and the sonic-filled "I am music" which does show that Timbaland can produce a few good tracks on his own work should the appropriate single be required to attract the ever-so widening audience.

Overall I recommend this album to the new generation of hip-hop lovers and the hardcore Timbo' followers but unfortunately this album has more filler than killer which could leave some listeners with an impression of someone with great potential yet to display full potential through his own work and collaborations.

3 out of 5 stars This should have been called Timbaland & The Posse !.......2003-03-14

Timbaland & The Posse: The Outtakes! Is what it sounds like!

This man is a Genious!

He is by far the most Innovative (Futuristic) producer of our time! I would rate the Neptunes next but Tim will be always 1st! Timbaland has been Beating ...down for the last 6, he is entitled to one mistake! I cannot believe he lacked on his own project. And where was Magoo? I was really looking forward to hearing the two comedian's bounce off one another. This album has entirely to much Petey Pablo and I really don't like his voice. Also the album comes off as a compilation of Outtakes of others albums he produced. The first 6 tracks are Hot to death and then the album takes a generic turn for the worst. Then it picks up a bit with the Tweet song "Love Me" and AAliyah's "I am Music". This really shocks me considering the first album was so creative throughout and had alot of MAgoo? This could have been a return of the Dynamic Duo and it was ruined by to many guest appearances and some spare tracks. Tims Bio, is a far more satifying effort even without Magoo's presence all the way through. We all know that Timbaland never stops Beating these Ni**az up side the head! Your still the man though everyone knows. He proved that on Missy's "Under Construction" and definitley on Justin Timberlake's "Cry me a River!" Also we must not forget the superior "MS Jade- Girl Interupted LP!" Which is Bangin' from start to finish! Timbaland probably was having Girlfriend Problems or a Kool Aid Break! Please don't "Beat" us down or hurt us to hard Tim" we know you are coming for Revenge it's already here! And it started with Ms Jade, which is a masterpiece in the Timbaland production Archieves!

3 out of 5 stars Indecent Proposal.......2003-01-29

I felt that Timbaland & Magoo should of came through with something more than an "Indecent Proposal"/Album is so-so/It's like a movie you want to see but can wait till it comes to video/With an array of artists on the album you would think Tim can't miss/But the beats ate the artist like praying mantis/Jay Z and Ludacris survived/Happy to be alive and tell their story/Magoo will never receive mainstream exposure/In closure, 3 stars cause Tim thrives as a beat explorer - Dimpals a.k.a "Leroy"

5 out of 5 stars "themes & cues savor the romantic that dwells in all of us".......2005-04-12

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

Sit back and unleash the first disc with composers taking each film score cue in alphabeltical order:

"CASABLANCA (AS TIME GOES BY)" (Herman Hupfeld)
"DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (MAIN TITLE & LARA'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"EL CID (LOVE THEME)" (Miklos Rozsa)
"EMMA (MAIN THEME) (Rachel Portman)
"GONE WITH THE WIND (TARA'S THEME)" (Max Steiner)
"IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (Dimitri Tiomkin)
"LOVE STORY (WHERE DO I BEGIN)" (Francis Lai)
"PLAY MISTY FOR ME (MISTY)" (Errol Garner)
"PRIDE & PREJUDICE (MAIN THEME)" (Carl Davis)
"RYAN'S DAUGHTER (ROSY'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (THROW THE COINS)" (Patrick Doyle)
"SOMEWHERE IN TIME (MAIN THEME)" (John Barry)
"THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE" (Max Steiner)
"VERTIGO (SCENE D'AMOUR)" (Bernard Herrmann)
"YOUNG & THE RESTLESS (NADIA'S THEME)" (Barry DeVorzon/Perry Botkin Jr)

Arrangements that soar and then simmer into pure meditation of grandeur ~ classic film music prevails, as orchestration comes to the surface with pure originality ~ one masterpiece after another is long last presented as it should have been, is cause for celebration ~ each cue is a distinctive gift for striking modernism, touching on the transition of the period in this planets history.

Second disc is waiting in the wings are the composers and selections also in alphabeltical order:

"A MAN AND A WOMAN (UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME)" (Francis Lai)
"BRAVEHEART (END TITLES)" (James Horner)
"CINEMA PARADISO (LOVE THEME)" (Ennio Morricone)
"EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (MAIN TITLE/ICE DANCE)" (Danny Elfman)
"EMMANUELLE" (Pierre Bachelet/Herve Roy)
"ENGLISH PATIENT (AS FAR AS FLORENCE)" (Gabriel Yared)
"FINDING NEVERLAND (IMPOSSIBLE OPENING)" (Jan A. P. Kaczmarek)
"GHOST (UNCHAINED MELODY)" (Alex North)
"IL POSTINO (MAIN THEME)" (Luis Bacalov)
"INDECENT PROPOSAL (MAIN THEME)" (John Barry)
"JEAN DE FLORETTE (MAIN TITLE)" (Jean Claude Petit)
"LAST TANGO IN PARIS" (Gato Barbier)
"ROMEO AND JULIET (LOVE THEME)" (Nino Rota)
"SUMMER OF '42 (THE SUMMER KNOWS)" (Michael Legrand)
"TITANIC (MY HEART WILL GO ON)" (James Horner)

Each composer has the passion and skill for exploring human emotions, coupled with a unique gift for striking exotic orchestral colors, make this with all it's splendor unforgettable ~ themes that ring with familiarity as each film comes to mind through music.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF TRUE DEATH METAL. THIS REVIEW WILL REFER TO BOTH INDECENT & OBSCENE AND PIECES.
FIRST "INDECENT & OBSCENE" 9 SONGS OF SOME OF THE BEST DEATH METAL EVER. THE OPENNING "FLESHLESS" IS IS AWSOME AND IT WILL KICK YOUR ASS. BY THE WAY THE VOCALS ON THIS ALBUM SICK. ITS LIKE SWEEDISH OBITUARY. THE GUITARS ARE REALLY HEAVY AND LOW TUNED. THIS WHOLE ALBUM HAS GOOD PRODUCTION.
SECOND "PIECES" THE 6 SONGS WERE FROM PIECES EP AND ITS AWSOME. THE BEST TRACK FOR ME IS THE SONG "PIECES". PICK THIS UP YOU'LL LOVE IT.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2005-04-23

I'm not going to break this album down, but I will say this:I agree with the other fellow reviewers when they say Dismember are way talented and probably THE most underrated death metal band ever! This album is one of their older albums but I believe it is their crowning achievement. It is a classic and it is one of the ten best death metal albums ever! The track "Dreaming in Red"(which is really the last track on Indecent and Obscene, the other 6 songs are from Pieces I believe)is, believe me when I say,one of the single best songs ever!It takes me to a whole other strange plane.Try it under the influence of some reefer.Swedish Death Metal friggin' rules!

5 out of 5 stars Brutal till the end!.......2004-08-19

wow! I recieved this in the mail yesterday and the minute I put in my cd player I was blown away by the intensity of the guitar and drum work this is indeed a great death metal album ah and the funny thing is that I found out about this band when a friend let me borrow a box set of DVDs called Traces of Death which included many death metal bands I found to be very interesting so i decided to purchase this album from this particularly very talented yet underrated band simply magnificant work although I think the last 6 tracks seemed to have had slightly better production than the first 9 anyways this is a MUST HAVE for all death metal fans

5 out of 5 stars old-school deathmetal.......2003-04-29

If want one of the greatest metal cds ever buy this.

This is the kind of music that's been influenced by many artists and movements of pop music that went before, which of course everybody does, but this band didn't appropriate these styles with any real conviction. It's kind of like listening to the greatest music movements of the 80's (this album was made in 1992) as made by a generic poser band like Survivor ("Eye of the Tiger") or Frank Stallone's band (remember Sly's brother's band from the 70's? Didn't think so.) Throw in a little Duran Duran, a little new romantics, a little George Michael, a little Billy Idol, some really faux Prince grooves, some hair and spandex band, synth pop this, synth pop that, a lot of swagger attitude and mix liberally in the studio. It's whiffs and hints of literally every power pop thing you heard from 1978 to 1992. I imagine anybody listening would start into a song and say, "That's not a bad groove." And then they'd say, "That's not a bad hook." Then they'd start bopping their heads and really trying to get into the song then the lyrics don't quite hit the right mood or the the listener finally figures out the groove isn't really in the pocket or they finally realize the hook isn't that great. Go to the next song and repeat the same experience. A little disappointing. I really want to root for every band. Maybe it was the mix of guys in the band or maybe the producer pushing them into material that really didn't fit. Whatever the cause this seems like the kind of pop music that gets made for TV when the TV producer wants something that sounds vaguely like something else but doesn't want to pay for the rights.
