5 out of 5 stars Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13

If you favor blend, balance, pitch, and all the other parameters of the English traditional choral style, you'll be very impressed with the Tallis Scholars' refined presentation. the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars i can't believe they did this in '82........2007-06-19

it's really just mindblowing. Bathory still had 2 more years before his debut, and you had Venom and Motorhead... buuut. This is just totally devastating. Discharge actually establish a HELLISH, BRUTAL sound that's not cheesy or takes any getting used to, you don't really have to 'gain appreciation' for it.

Discharge is just fkn hard.

5 out of 5 stars BEST PUNK ALBUM OF ALL TIME.......2006-12-22

This is as good as it gets.Hostile, seething rage committed to tape.An avalanche of razor guitars, thundering bass, colossal, thrashing drums and the angriest, most demented vocals ever layed down.
Discharge reached their zenith with this 1982 release, and in the process paved the way for Grindcore,Thrash Metal,Death Metal,etc.,etc...
One of the most influential rock albums ever.A sublime, crazed masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a band.......2006-01-14

I can't seriously think of a better band than Discharge. They are tighter than a crab's [back] and the formula is intact: riff, riff with verse, riff #2, riff #2 with chorus, then repeat twice, then end abruptly. AWESOME. I mean, don't cut corners. When this album was in my collection in high school, I deliberately played it to piss people off. Listen to the bass solo on "The Final Bloodbath" at about the :39 mark: it's going so fast, it disintegrates into total unstructured noise, AND IT'S ONLY A ONE-NOTE SOLO. Good God. "State Control" is one of the top 10 punk singles ever. And "I Won't Subscribe" is the blueprint for every punk song in history. Rancid should be servicing these guys after a show, they are so brutal. Nothing even comes close. "Drunk With Power" is almost unintentionally funny it's so good. This album is worth it for the small (they were bigger on the LP) photos of the band alone, playing their instruments in some live setting: the lead singer Cal looks like he is screaming his freakin' lungs right out of his body. Also, the lyric sheet. Get a load of these profound poetic phrases: "Britain among others deal in death when selling arms to developing countries / to developing countries they sell death / where there is urgent need for medical programmes". And that's the whole song. No, really. I mean, why ramble on, get your point across and move on to the next one. I wish I could have sat around and watched these guys practice in their prime, I bet they would run through about 150 songs in an hour. Simply put, this album is loaded with extra tracks, has the lyrics, photos, supposedly it's remastered (not that it matters, it still sounds like a freight train of at least thirty overdubbed guitars playing the same riff). I seriously cannot think of one album in any genre of music that this couldn't obliterate with one song. What more could you possibly ask for? Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare For A BeatDown!!.......2006-01-05

Imagine a gang of four spiky-haired English street punks stomping and pummelling you in a dreary alley somewhere in London or New York. Imagine the impact of their combat boots and fists as they crash repeatedly onto your unprotected head and into your gut and groin. Imagine for good measure they add in a few whacks with a pipe or a baseball bat. Now imagine that going on for a total of 47 minutes and 37 seconds and that is a good approximation of the aural equivalent of this record. If you like your music loud, fast, aggressive, and historically groundbreaking, not to mention violent, brutal and extremely working class, it doesn't get any better than this. This record is no joke. Slayer is often considered to have been one of the most extreme bands ever, and much of their early sound, especially on their masterpiece Reign In Blood, was inspired by this album. See Nothing Hear Nothing Say Nothing is a key foundation of all fast, brutal, and extreme rock to follow. This album is the true and original "rage against the machine" and the real "fight the power". It is harsh, angry, pissed-off punk industrial noise. It speaks for itself. Prepare for a beatdown!!

5 out of 5 stars The grandfathers of crust.......2005-06-18

Discharge. To those of us who saw them back in 1982, just saying the name is enough. We know which Discharge album is the one that matters and when we reach for a Discharge disc to put in the player, this is the one we choose. The three best and most interrelated releases are all on this disc. The first 14 tracks are from the "Hear Nothing..." (LP), the next three are from the Never Again (7") and the next two are from the State Violence (7"ep). So, what does it sound like? Well, the closest thing to it would be a circular saw. This is a "Wall Of Sound" that Phil Spector never dreamed of. A full frontal assault on the senses. Nothing else even comes close. This must be played LOUD - as LOUD as possible, play it for your neighbors, the next block over, on a stereo pumping out at least 200 watts. A couple of cheesy little plastic speakers or headphones just wont cut it. With these three recordings, Discharge became the grandfathers of Crust, DBeat, and more. This album created a whole new genre for hardcore and Discharge became the most heavily copied band ever. If you don't believe me, buy this, then go out to Profane Existence, and buy any record at random. (Guess what, it sounds a bit like Discharge) And not without reason. Back in 1982, the sonic wall they created on this album was unlike anything that had come before it. It's not metal, there are no double bass drums, no self indulgent guitar solo's, or silly vocal falsettos. Okay, they did get a bit weird on the last four tracks, but you are going to buy this for the first 19 and ignore the last four, trust me. By the time you get to Doomsday, the 19th track, you are going to say "Oh, My, Friggin God" and you will have a new favorite album, or you just wont get it and you'll never play it again. Either way, you'll know it was harder louder and more intense than anything else on the store shelves back in 1982, and its still holding it's own in 2005. Other reviewers have compared this record favorably to Motorhead and Venom, and unfavorably to Good Charlott, Avril Lavigne and Blink 182. But these are not accurate comparisons. The closest comparison you can make is to bands like Antisect and Anti-System. The only way to make this disc better would be to remove the last four tracks. As it is, this is easily one of the three most important punk / hardcore records ever. If you disagree with that statement, then this disc is probably older than you are. It is simply impossible to overstate the importance of this album, and the influence it has continued to hold.

Album Description

The American Yiddish musical theater, a vibrant expression of the immigrant experience, became famous during its heyday in the 1920s-1940s. Combining the musical flavors of Viennese operetta, Tin Pan Alley, and eastern European nostalgia, these songs and duets are quintessential American popular music—with a Yiddish voice. Volume 1 spotlights the hit songs of Abe Ellstein, one of the genre's premier songwriters. New, historically accurate orchestrations re-create the unforgettable glory days of Yiddish radio and film, the uproarious vaudeville houses, and the thrill of a night at the theater on old New York's fabled "Second Avenue."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great collection, nice orchestrations.......2005-01-19

Great collection of yiddish musical theatre favorites. Unfortunately the singers were told to sing the songs in a supposedly "authentic" galician accent which in certain instances is completely incomprehensible to any yiddish speaker. The singers are quite good and the orchestrations are lush and well done.

5 out of 5 stars A Great New Addition to the Milken Archive!.......2004-03-10

This CD is perfect for fans of Yiddish folk music and newcomers to the genre alike. It is a great introduction to some of the treasures of the Yiddish stage. Especially worth noting are the four tracks sung by Elizabeth Shammash, whose rich Mezzo-Soprano voice brings a great sensitivity and tone to her pieces.

      5 out of 5 stars Astonishing music.......2004-06-09

      --Thomas Tallis--
Thomas Tallis, born in 1505, was one of the outstanding liturgical composers of his day, being the acknowledged master of the composers of England from the time of Queen Mary's reign forward. He was a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth, and worked closely with many other composers, most particularly William Byrd. He was an organist in addition to composer. He died in 1585, having navigated his way through the tumultuous catholic/protestant difficulties of the church which provided his livelihood and creative outlet.

      --English Anthems--
There are twelve anthems here. Tallis recognised the needs of the newly Protestant clergy, who looked for intelligibility and simplicity in the worship. These anthems were in the vernacular of the people, some of the earliest liturgical anthems in English (as prior to this, the Catholic church celebrated in Latin). However, the compositions here span the time from the young King Edward's reign to the middle of Queen Elizabeth's reign, a time of great shifting of religious foundations and sensibilities.

There are some pieces here for men's voices only - four-part pieces such as 'If ye love me' and 'Here the voice and prayer' are quick famous, and very concise in scope. Other pieces are more elaborate, MATB choirs, and a few very substantial five-voice compositions, 'Christ rising' and 'Blessed are those', the later scored for a standard pre-Reformation choir of treble, mean, countertenor, tenor and bass.

The 'Tunes for Archbishop Parker' consists of eight tunes, two of which may be very familiar - the 'Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis' by Ralph Vaughn Williams comes from this number, as does Tallis' classic 'Canon'.

      --Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece from Hans Holbein the Younger, a portrait of Edward VI as a child, painted in 1538, during Tallis' lifetime.

      --The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.

Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Thomas Tallis, the namesake of the group, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is remarkable, both in composition and performance. The original recording was made in 1986.

If you want proof of the ever-deepening talent level throughout the Christian music world, go no further than southern Oregon's Seven Places. Expectations for Hear Us Say Jesus, the band's sophomore effort, were modest at best, considering the group is a relatively little-known act who garnered some buzz with an initial release (Lonely for the Last Time) and a slot on several big-name summer music festivals (Festival Con Dios and Cornerstone to name a few). Yet listeners will be pleasantly surprised when they encounter this energetic and thoughtful collection of songs that boldly proclaim the gospel. Stylistically many of the release's better numbers ("Fall In Line," "Even When," "Where Almost There," "All In My Head") may remind some of Third Eye Blind, Skillet, or even the Newsboys. But there is a fresh-enough appeal with frontman Seth Gilbert's expansive vocal range to stamp a unique mark on this brand of Christian pop. The group even explores new areas while adding strings and pedal steel guitar to several tracks as they look to grow artistically. As Gilbert sings on the opening song, "Fall In Line," "We've got something to say, We've got something to say." Indeed they do and it's worth a good, long listen. --Michael Lyttle

      5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Change.......2006-09-30

This band is different from what you will hear from many Christian artists. They are not afraid to say Jesus as the title suggest, and it's a nice change. The music is clean sounding, and lifts the spirits. I really loved this CD. It's definitely worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, great lyrics.......2006-03-24

Excellent Christian CD with really great lyrics... you can see that they have a relationship with the Lord Jesus!

4 out of 5 stars Better than their debut album........2006-01-10

I got this cd about 3 months ago, because I own their debut album, plus I had heard the first single "Fall In Line", from the album on Christian radio, which I loved. This album is much better than their first. Hear Us Say Jesus has alot more songs that jump out at you. I really like the songs "Watch", "We're Almost There", and "Be My Salvation". My favorite track though is "I Look Upon Your Hill", which is a song that really speaks to your heart, and you can feel the love of Jesus. A really good album. Good Christian alternative music. 4 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful set of songs...........2005-12-08

Seven Places, where to start? The growth from their first CD is astounding. They are much more mature, and you wouldn't even know having changed two bandmates, because the album is very confident and the message is very clear... Jesus is Lord THE and Savoir...

Their first album had some georgeous music on it there wasn't a bad track on it, "Everything" was exquisite, and "Lonely for the Last Time", was another amazing standout. But where the first album showed great promise, thise promise is beginning to be fulfilled, and its very exciting!!!!

I will admit, when I first got this disc back in April, I did not care for it very much, but after setting it down for a few months and picking it back up in September this year, I began to warm up to the music. And after listening to it nearly everyday for 3 months straight, and can now name it as one of my all time favorites along with their first disc.

This disc, although not as accessable as their first, is infinitely more rewarding. Just like with the Lord, the more time we spend with it(him), the more we enjoy it(him).

My personal favorites on the disc have to be: Actually its impossible to name a favorite... All the tracks are so varied, but all have the running theme that the Lord or God, sent Jesus to save us, and despite our best efforts, we'll never be good enough, and its only through him we are free, and we will never understand it until we accept the fact and recieve him as our personal savoir.

I do personal love "All in my Head", as it is hard for many people I've known to understand that knowledge doesn't save us, it destroys us, it is only through the Lord that we recieve wisdom, and the knowledge is often found to be lies. "Holes in His Hands", is great to me, in that it demonstrates just how silly it is to say we can escape God, the ONE whom created the entire Universe along with us... Right.... "Watch" is another favorite "Watch me walk through these prison bars, then will know my heart is free, then you will my heart is free...", but truly, I enjoy each track just as much as the next!!!

So, I hope that you will come to enjoy this record as well, and you will especially appreciate it after listening to "Lonely for the Last Time". :) And of course, after you've recieved the Lord as your Savoir, until then, you'll always just see it as "music".

      God Bless ~Amy

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Annointed Talent from Southern Oregon.......2005-07-21

Seven Places delivers far beyond expectation in their second album. Just as the title suggests, you will hear the band "Say Jesus" many times throughout the album. The lyrics are real, mature, heartfelt, and annointed. Lyricly, there is much depth amidst simplicity in this album.

The change in the line-up does great things for the sound of this album. While still sounding influenced by 'Third Eye Blind,' this album leans more toward 'Coldplay,' and 'U2.' Everything sounds a lot more complete and radio playable production-wise, while still bold and ground-breaking in creativity.

This album is an immensely rewarding and enjoyable listen the whole way through.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-26

This is such a great collection of 20th century songs, that it behooves me to say something brief about each composer on this disc. I think that by doing so the listener gains more insight and thus more appreciation of all aspects of the song material.

The music of Samuel Barber (1910-1981), whether his symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music or songs, is notable above all for a pronounced and refined lyricism. Barbr wrote songs thruout his career, and his published vocal output, though relatively small, is perhaps the most distinguished of an American composer. He preferred lyrical , romantic poetry, and his word-setting was perfect.
Stephen Foster (1826-1864) published his first song when he was 18 and by dint of hundreds more became, in the words of Aaron Copland,"our own national hero (who) had a naturalness and sweetness of sentiment that transformed his melodies into the equivalent of folk song." He was truly a songwriter rather than a composer, for he wrote no concert works or operas.
Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) assimilated Debussian impressionism and, somewhat later, Oriental exoticism. During his brief career, he composed 64 songs, including four song-cycles.
George Gershwim(1898-1937) began his career in Tin Pan Alley and eventually, with works such as 'Rhapsody in blue' for piano and orchestra and some other works, brought Jazz into the concert hall.
Paul Bowles (1910- ) has long enjoyed celebrity status as an author,a writer of novels, short stories and essays. After a brief study with Aaron Copland, he made a considerable reputation as a composer of incidenal music. Virgil Thompson once described Bowles's songs as "enchanting for their sweetness of mood, their lightness of texture, for in general their way of being wholly alive and right".
Cole Porter (1891-1964) had the rare ability to invent superior catchpenny tunes; deceptively simple, often elegant melodies that stay in the ear. Consequently,he became one of the most successful American songwriter of his era.

As to Samuel Ramey's performance of these songs, one can only say 'business as usual', and that means great sound, great diction, great interpretation and always with that extra something that only a few bassos have!!!!The variety of works is varied and interesting and, if you please, is NOT a cross-over album. There are too many songs that denote the classical element. He was wise enough to vary his selection to avoid that particular situation. I really like this disc!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest American bass.......2007-01-10

Ramey fans will not be disappointed by this charming collection of vocal gems.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but one dimensional.......2000-04-26

Samuel Ramey is undoubtedly one of the finest and most versatile opera singers of his generation. However, these songs do not show his voice off at his best. One of Ramey's main faults is a lack of variety and vocal colour which is ABSOLUTELY needed in a song recital. This lack of colouring means that most of the songs come out sounding the same. The other major concern is that Mr Ramey's vibrato is quite pronounced. Most opera singers can get away with this when singing with an orchestra, but when he just has piano accompaniment it is much more noticeable. Still, it is good to have a recording of some of these lesser known songs and it is still an enjoyable cd.

5 out of 5 stars Primo basso assolutto!!.......1998-11-17

Having attended Mr. Ramey's recent recital in Chicago where he sang a number of the songs on this recording, I can say that there is simply no bass today to rival him for sheer vocal glory. Whether it is the bel canto repetoire, baroque decorations, or as here, the American literature, Ramey is THE bass of the day. Unlike the former days when bassos were relagated to either buffoon, rich uncle, or some other supporting role, Ramey has almost single-handedly elevated the basso to star status. Roles that languished for years because there was no one up to their demands are now staples of Ramey's catalogue. Warren Jones is a sensetive and intelligent accompanist. In fact he played the entire recital from memory.

5 out of 5 stars Robeson at his best.......2001-03-24

This album consists of recordings Paul Robeson made in Britain durong the 1920s. He is accompanied by the great pianist Lawrence Brown or by a small orchestra led by Ray Noble. The songs on this disc are spirituals or pop songs of the era, and Robeson shines on every one of them. Robeson has an uncanny ability to make any song his own property, and this is especially true on his version of "Little Pal" - originally a saccharine semi-racist ballad written for Al Jolson. Robeson turns the song into a searing lament of an estranged father, and makes the song valid even today with his urgent, committed delivery. The majority of the songs on the cd are spirituals, and Robeson's versions are definitive in every sense of the word. All in all, there isn't a bad track here, and as an introduction to Robeson's work the record is priceless. The only aspect worth criticizing is the fact that the liner notes seem to shy away from the fact that Robeson was the first important black artist to actively fight for civil rights. The music here, however, is extremely beautiful.
