An updated read on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You is a teen comedy about two sisters on opposite ends of the social spectrum: one is pretty and popular, the older sister is bitter and vengeful. Family rules dictate that the younger sibling can't date until the older one has. You see where this is going. The soundtrack features Letters to Cleo in a '70s mood covering Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." Sweden's Cardigans include a rare B-side, "War." George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me," and Madness's "Wings of a Dove" still sound fresh. Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-01-04

Totally recomendable for sparetime listening good music. I like the song Your Winter performed by Sister Hazel, is terrific.
By the way, the movie is great too. Julie Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Larisa Oleynik plays a funny characters.

Great Soundtrack for a GREAT movie.......2006-12-26

I loved 10 Things I Hate About You, and the music plays such an important role in the movie, so I got the soundtrack and I love it. While many are complaining that a lot of songs are missing I don't think they know that it is impossible to put EVERY song on the album. Letters to Cleo is a great band and the songs weren't available on iTunes so this was great. I TOTALLY recommend this soundtrack and the movie.

Biggie, Bare Naked Ladies, "Just Be Good To Me" were not on this cd. Those and others that were missing were the reasons I wanted it.

It didn't live up to my expectations. I really loved the movie and most of the music but the cd only had one or two really good songs from the movie.

Stick we the older cd released of this.......2007-05-09

I heard a couple of these songs before i have a tape of his best of and that version of Famous Blue Raincoat is different and better. This new version has Cohen's voice up front and center which is not his strong suit. You cant hear the melody of the song that much anymore. I notice this on Last Years Man as well. The other songs on here are good accept that diamond song which is quite bad and really shows why he does not have much of a voice. I have the old cd version of songs of and the sound quality is not that good i have to turn up the volume so that is why i waited to get the restored version of this cd. I should have just gotten the old version of this instead. I would probably like it more with repeat listens it takes a couple of listens to get what his lyric mean.

I listen to this cd again it is a good one i will give it 4 stars now. Every song is good accept Diamonds on your mind that still sucks. My fav is Joan of Ark. There are two songs on here that mention her why didn't he put her on the cover.

A Masterpiece..........2007-07-02

This one still pleases after what, 10 or so years? "Pretty Hate Machine" was my intro to NIN. Previously I would never have chosen to listen to it, but my then-boyfriend (now husband) was a huge fan.

I'll never forget the first time he played it -- we were in his room at his townhome, hanging out with a bunch of friends. It was on a six-CD changer, and when it started I was just mesmerized. To say that this kind of music had NEVER been in my repertoire before would be a serious understatement! However, as foreign as that industrial tech sound was to my ears, I was hooked.

Fast forward 10 years -- boyfriend is now my husband -- and now we have 3 kids; still, we bring out this CD a LOT (well, when the kids are in bed, LOL). It is just as good now as it was back then. Never tire of it.

There are many NIN songs that I love, but what stands out about "Pretty Hate Machine" is the fact that every song on there hits the ball out of the park. That is sooooo rare for any album -- there are always those "quick, skip to the next track" songs on most albums.

Love Trent, Love NIN. Love "Pretty Hate Machine". Coming from a person who usually thinks industrial-tech music is irritating as hell, this is a big compliment!

Still a great album more than a decade and a half later.......2007-06-08

I'm just about the last person on earth you'd expect to find listening to harsh industrial rock, but I've loved Pretty Hate Machine since I first heard it waaaaay back in college. The innovative sound of this album introduced people like me to a whole new kind of music. More than a decade and a half later, I still love listening to it. At a time when the music world was having a difficult time figuring out what to do after the 1980s, Reznor blew the doors wide open for all kinds of new sounds and set the stage for a broad range of music that appeared during the 1990s. It's amazing that a debut album could have that big of an impact, but it truly did. Great stuff.

Revisiting Pretty Hate Machine: when Reznor wrote well.......2007-06-06

Pretty Hate Machine is the soundtrack of an adolescent emotional crisis. I don't just mean that it's loud, angry and self-absorbed. That would hardly be interesting. No, much more than that, it very accurately depicts the feelings and mindset of that time in a person's life. And because Trent Reznor really did make it big by being loud, angry and self-absorbed (on The Downward Spiral, in 1994), it became easy to forget just how accurate his writing is on his first album.

Musically, The Downward Spiral is superior to Pretty Hate Machine. Actually, Pretty Hate Machine doesn't have all that much music. There is a musical backdrop for Reznor's voice, but it mostly consists of straightforward dance rhythms and some keyboard textures that don't really stand out. Very few songs on the album have stand-alone musical hooks.

But that's fine, because the album is all about Reznor. His voice is the one stand-alone hook. In almost every song, the lyrics are arranged into extremely catchy rhythms, occasionally with elaborate rhyme schemes and metric structure. And Reznor always delivers them with extremely clear, forceful diction. The best example of this is "Sin." The music is fairly forgettable, just a simple house beat, some industrial noises and one keyboard line, but the vocals are striking. When I first heard the album, I couldn't remember any of the music, but the vocal rhythms immediately became ingrained in my memory.

Nine Inch Nails is an industrial band, but this particular album has more in common with new wave than with industrial. In fact, it greatly resembles another debut album by an angry young man, Soul Mining by Matt Johnson. Both albums have very similar introspective and emotional subject matter, down to the obsession with god and betrayal, and both are dance-inspired and almost completely electronic. It's no surprise that Reznor is an admirer of Johnson's work, and Johnson's The The was briefly signed to Reznor's Nothing label around 2000.

Reznor's melodramatic grandstanding is on full display here. "Head Like A Hole" describes a conflict with some vague, faceless "god money" who wants to "control" everything. In "Terrible Lie," Reznor states, "I'm on my hands and knees / I want so much to believe," which he repeats almost verbatim on his most recent album Year Zero. Unsurprisingly, these are the most famous songs from the album, and the ones most frequently performed live, because they're the closest in style to Reznor's later work. But his delivery in these songs is perfect, so they still remain his best expressions of this kind of sentiment.

But in the less famous songs on the second side, Reznor shows a different worldview. Let me quote the first verse of "Ringfinger" in full: "Well, you've got me working so hard lately / Working my hands until they bleed / If I was twice the man I could be / I'd still be half of what you need / Still you lead me and I follow / Anything you ask, you know I'll do / This one act of consecration / Is what I ask of you." This is actually good writing. None of the rhymes are forced and the verse makes perfect sense (unfortunately, the second verse adds a tired Christ metaphor, but whatever). Now, what's Trent talking about? That's right: he's asking the girl he likes to marry him!

You see, he doesn't do this on The Downward Spiral, because on The Downward Spiral he presents himself as a suffering poet and artist, a tormented larger-than-life rock-god. Tormented larger-than-life rock-gods do not make marriage proposals, that can only be the act of an ordinary man, one who has to work hard every day. And that is why Pretty Hate Machine is the better album: because it depicts the same dramatic emotions realistically, from the perspective of an ordinary man who just wants to settle down with a nice girl, and worries that she'll refuse his proposal.

"That's What I Get" is written in the same way: "How could you turn me into this / After you just taught me how to kiss you?" This is melodramatic, but it's exactly how a bewildered, sensitive teenage boy would feel upon finding out that the girl he loves has been around. On The Downward Spiral, Trent already knows how to kiss you, in fact he wants to boink you like an animal because it makes him feel closer to god. "Closer" is how sensitive teenage boys want to be, and "That's What I Get" is how they really are.

"The Only Time" has a simplistic screaming chorus, but the verses are brilliant. Dig this: "I'm drunk and right now I am so in love with you / and I don't want to think too much about what we should or shouldn't do," and then the sensual and perceptive addition, "I swear I've just found everything I need / The sweat in your eyes, the blood in your veins are listening to me." It's such a shame that he doesn't write this way anymore, because there are so few rock lyricists who can (actually Matt Johnson is one). Instead, they over-dramatize themselves, much like Reznor on the later Nine Inch Nails albums.

Perversely, the ballad "Something I Can Never Have," which is much more famous, is actually much weaker than these songs, because it's so much more vague. But somehow the "honest" songs make the "vague" songs sound more convincing. So, on the whole, the album sounds sincere and intelligent.

The reissue of the album is disappointing, because it could have included a significant amount of totally original unreleased material, songs like "Maybe Just Once," "Purest Feeling," and "Now I'm Nothing," as well as the Queen cover that came out on the "Sin" single. Hopefully the next reissue will fix that problem. But even as it is, this album features Reznor's best writing, which is much better than his later work might lead one to believe.

Trent kicks in the door.......2007-04-30

Pretty hate machine is one of the best debuts. With a reggae influance on Head like ahole terrible lie Kinda i want to Thats what i get and The only time Phm stood out and set the tone for NIN.Ringfinger is great the heaviest song on here. Something i can never have is a sad ballad it is emotional and deep. Sanctified is good with the chant reminescent of the popular chant cd from back then. Sin is still a highlight of a NIN concert. Pretty hate machine opened the door and set the stage for change in a then stagnant music scene.

Nine Inch Nails - The Early Years.......2007-04-13

Coming from a band better known for the dense soundscapes and industrial grit of, say, The Downward Spiral, the minimalist style of Nine Inch Nails' first full-length album will surprise fans more familiar with the band's later work. The term "band" should be used loosely though, since, save for a few guests, all the music is written and performed by frontman Trent Reznor. All the more impresseive then, that Pretty Hate Machine is the album that first introduced industrial (in some form) into the mainstream by blending it with with pop sensibilities and producing memorable singles like Head Like A Hole and Terrible Lie. Of course, that all depends on how one defines "industrial", but the new wave / Depeche Mode feel comes on strong. Trent himself sites 80's electronic icon Gary Numan ("Cars") as a major influence, and it's most noticable on this early material. Programmed drum beats, presumably reconstructed from sampled old school hip hop loops (think Run DMC - keep in mind it was 1989) snap, crackle and pop from under layers (but not many layers) of beeps, trippy synthesizers, and blasts of distorted guitar (or more likely distorted synth). The most noticeable deviation is Something I Can Never Have, a piano-driven piece that starts out quiet and builds to an emotionally-wrought crescendo. Other noteworthy tracks include the singles Sin and Down In It. For someone who's new to the band, I'd recommend starting with The Downward Spiral or maybe The Fragile. Pretty Hate Machine sounds like a pretty dated machine by today's standards, but it's a great album, especially for Nine Inch Nails fans.

Good songs, good look........2007-05-13

Since it's an import, I would think there's something different from it and the US version. turns out when I purchased it, I got a colored cd! It doesn't make much of difference to most people, but it did to me. The scheme is bascially the same as the album art is, so it's matching somewhat.

The best NIN album ever.......2007-04-23

PHM started my love affair with NIN. Yes, I found it on cassette and to this day I do not know how. I remember being fascinated with the lead single, as it was something new and different on the radio. This album changed everything (on the radio), saving us from the prevalent 80's girly-man bands whose perpetual whining about love and how they couldn't get enough (sex - although they used more "romantic" terms to hide their desires) was destroying brain cells among the general populace. This album came out and changed all of that.

Side One (a cassette experience that is unduplicatable on CD) was the more commercially viable, with the opening track "Head Like a Hole," which is one second shy of five uninterrupted minutes of some of the finest anger every channeled into musical form, "Terrible Lie," "Down in It," and "Sanctified." These songs gave the album an explosive beginning that forced you to let the album play in its entirety, to see what was coming next, which undoubtedly was the basis for its commercial success, and the future of Trent Reznor. Much harsher and angrier than his follow-up albums, this is his best effort to date, and a must-have for any industrial music fan.

If I had to choose only one word to describe this album, the only word to come to mind would be "Wow.."

Pretty Hate Machine is one of my favorite albums, from Head Like A Hole all the way to Ringfinger, this album is perfect. Not to mention that Head Like A Hole is the perfect closing song for a concert.

My favorite tracks from this CD would have to be.. Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie and Sin. I usually don't like music that's been around as long as I have, but.. My God, I just love this CD.

HIGHLY recommended.

Great Album, but the domestic version.......2007-03-06

Why pay extra for an import. Save some money and buy domestic (if you can). One of the greatest albums ever...mainly because this album is all Trent. He did everything on this CD. It is a little dated, but still stands out, even after almost 18 years.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Viva LOVE...........2007-05-27

With a rush, a push and then bang! It landed. Morrissey's first album. With such a successful first solo album, one would have thought that happiness is around the corner for Manchester's Black Sheep son, but alas, this is only the first cut of the many wounds he would inflict with his later album releases. It was inevitable and all so sad that the Rogers and Hammerstein of the 80's, Morrissey and Marr, were to break up. But Morrissey must walk the path of gloom alone and this first album is ominous of everything else that was to come.

With youth still on his side, sadness and anger was oh so fresh, vibrant and inspired. Morrissey takes the back seat of the internal revolution of life's chaos and misery and pours it out in one, big, voluptous and elegant sigh with this debut album.

Morrissey's superb first solo album...........2007-04-23

This is a great debut by the brilliant Morrissey. This is probably the solo album that came closest to the Smiths sound, probably due to the fact that Stephen Street, the engineer on many Smiths albums, wrote the music for this album. The opener, Alastain Cousin, is a powerful song. I love the melancholy and beauty of Everyday is Like Sunday (which Morrissey performed in concert when I saw him). Suedehead is a funny, pop masterpiece, but the final song, Margaret on the Guillotine, is a haunting, sad, acerbically hilarious song, reported written with then PM Margaret Thatcher in mind. While some will say "it ain't The Smiths", well, you're right, it isn't. But I still really like this album a lot...

Viva Hate ~.......2007-03-12

Morrissey is a very talented individual and this cd is my personal favorite of his after the break-up from The Smiths. 'Margaret on the Guillotine' is an amazing track with the lyrics and instrumentals. I dont believe you can find it on any other Morrissey albums. A true talent like this deserves much credit.

Some moments muddle the brilliance.......2006-10-01

After leaving his first band "The Smiths," Morrissey embarked on a solo career, and instantly become one of the most distinguished talents in college-pop rock. His first album, "Viva Hate," is far from perfect, but features a good number of galvanizing and danceable tunes; all orchestrated with Morrissey's poetry, and clearly decisive voice. From the first song Alsatian Cousin, in which a sifting bass-keyboard sound fires, this solo-debut heralds something special. The music and lyrics corrosively develop into a melee of Morrissey's frustration with someone in his life, in which he asks them the direct question, "Were you and he lovers?" It is these themes of love, heartbreak, nostalgia, political bashing, suicide, and lines that speak of wanting an Armageddon, that make this album nearly break from its downpoints.

Most noticeable about this debut is the inclusion of the keyboard, and this sharp sound somewhat makes up for the absence of the stunning instrumental work, and musical construction of guitar wizard, Johnny Marr. The great number of stylistic strokes in many songs could have a meaning, like the bashing cymbals on "Little Man, What Now?" that seem to match the song's themes about childhood dreams squashed, appropriately, and add more heart to the beautiful voice of Morrissey. While images of nothingness, leading to a bitter depression are in the next song, "Everyday is Like Sunday," a piece about a derelict and dangerous coastal town with dread-ridden lyrics like, ""How I wish I was not here/ in the seaside town. /...That they forgot to bomb." It is by this grasp on human loneliness, and regret, that makes Morrissey's songs so fascinating, as they inhibit a serene feel of a summer breeze, with a nagging sensation of developing tragedy.

When "Viva Hate's" forth song hits your ears, the album begins to stem some instantly forgettable songs. Bengali in Platforms seems underdeveloped, and lacking Morrissey's brutal emotional punch. While others are well intentioned, bad ideas; such as Hairdresser on Fire, a social satire that just ends up feeling empty, and too obvious. Many of the next songs jut between moments of greatness, (Suedehead is a corky rocker) and soft-pop rock misfires (Last Night, Maudlin Street, a well-written song that sadly goes on a bit too long.)

While "Viva Hate" never deteriorates into below average music, it does not quite reach the level that Morrissey has put forthright with "The Smiths" albums. However, Morrissey's skill has not diminished, as both a songwriter, and a singer. Despite a few underwhelming missteps, "Viva Hate" is an album that is still essential in every music fan's collection.

Very good, but should have been better.......2006-07-15

This album played by The Smiths lineup, might have surpassed The Queen is Dead or Meat is Murder.

As it stands it is very good. Probably the most Smiths like of his solo albums which isn't suprising given it was released soon after the regrettable demise of The Smiths. The main difference is that Johnny Marr is irreplacable, though Stephen Street is competant and compliments Morrissey well.

My favorites on this album are Angel, Angel..., which might be the most haunting and beautiful songs he ever penned. Every day is like Sunday, Suedehead, Hairdresser on Fire and Alsatian Cousin. The rest are just so-so, but not bad.

If you are new to The Smiths or Morrisey, check out The Smiths, as his work with Johnny Marr and co is unbeatable, and then start with this and go through his solo catalog.

The weakest BR release but much better than all their post '96 albums.......2007-07-25

A lot of people praise this album a lot saying it is probably Bad Religion's best release...I have to say that I strongly disagree.

IMO 'Recipe For Hate' comes across as a mediocre continuation of the brilliant 'Generator' album. The songwriting is in the same vain, concentrating in more mid-tempo and clean passages and more throughout guitars and lyrics. That's not a bad thing but the problem here is that unlike Generator most songs sound mediocre or uninspired compared to the rest. Tracks like "Recipe For Hate", "Leave Mine To Me", "American Jesus", "Watch It Die", "Struck A Nerve" and "Skyscraper" are truly outstanding compositions that might be better than some of the bands previous efforts. On the other hand tracks like 'Portrait Of Authority', 'Modern Day Catastrophists', 'My Poor Friend Me' and 'Kerosene' are pretty bad...

Anyways Bad Religion's weakest could be another band's greatest, so no major complaints here. The musicianship and lyrics of the good songs are outstanding as in all of their releases up to 'The Gray Race'. Some tracks have excellent guitar work (including some great solos), better vocals and more progressive ideas (like the inclusion of metal and alternative rock influences at small parts).

Overall 'Recipe For Hate' is a nice release but compared to the bands previous and 2 future offerings it comes up a bit short. (Definitely not an album for new BR fans, try 'Against The Grain' or 'Stranger Than Fiction' first)

Different but good.......2007-07-08

I like this album...the songs are very diverse. The album has a darker feel to it than the previous ones and that dark approach continued on Generator. The only song that doesnt really fit on here is Kerosene. Seriously they should have shoved it onto The New America seven years later in 2000. The other complaint I have is that the sound quality is pretty bad...not as bad as the sound quality on the SACD of Stranger Than Fiction but still not up to par.

However on with the good...
the songs themselves are really good. The lyrics as always are thought provoking and interesting and the harmonies and backup vocals from other musicians on 'Watch It Die' and 'Struck A Nerve' are very well placed.
The drumming and guitar work is also very well implemented to fit each song. The song 'All Good Soldiers' is actually quite good...don't know why many people don't like it. It sounds kinda like 'Atomic Garden' from Generator...well thats the feeling I get from the song anyway.

My top 5 songs in no order from this album would be:
Recipe For Hate, American Jesus, My Poor Friend Me, Lookin' In and Skyscraper.

I know my review was short but im hungover right now and really dont have the time to write a long review...the music speaks for itself anyway...

Bad Religion at their finest.......2006-11-05

Although I am not a fan of Punk Rock, I find Bad Religion to be great since once in a while they will release a song/political statement that is really clever and well presented. Recipe for Hate is not their best release musically (for that I would recommend "No Substance"), but lyrically there are several tracks that really appeal to me. Portrait of Authority and Skyscraper are two tracks that really got me hooked to Bad Religion. Although I do not agree with all of Bad Religions statements and opinions(actually, I disagree with most of them), I am glad that they go on stating them.

This is a great album with some of the best punk songs I have heard. Stuck a nerve is probably my favourite cut on the album, with American Jesus and Recipe for Hate following behind.

A note to Agnostic Vegetarian "Sizemore": In Watch it die, it is not Greg who sings the 'put to sleep' verse. It is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

Wish I had seen the actual Show!!!!.......2007-08-01

I wish I was about 20 when Kiss Me Kate opened so I could have witnessed this body shaking, gut bursting work of Cole Porter. This is the first time I've heard it. I can still feel the voices and music pumping through my blood stream with pleasure. You have to get it to get it so get it. You'll be more than greatful you did. Pardon me, I'm going to listen to it again!

The best and maybe the last CD of this great musical........2006-02-20

Now is the perfect time to buy the CD of this.

Sony's transfer engineers used state-of-the-art restoration software to remove the roughness and surface noise from the originals, but (thankfully) they resisted the urge to tart-up the sound with artificial reverb, faux stereo, and thundering bass. This is by far the best-sounding CD of this ever released, and it may be the last.

The age of music ownership in America could be drawing to a close. Five years from now, this music may only be available by download, you might only be "borrowing" it, and it probably won't come with the the authentic cover art or the 26-page booklet.

Beautiful remastering of historic original cast recording.......2004-05-24

Recorded in January 1949, this album of KISS ME KATE has remained in print adn a steady best-seller for over 50 years now.

The sound on this newly remastered CD is crisp and clear and easily surpasses all previous issues. Sony even uses the original artwork from the very first LP release.

The performances remain as fresh as ever. Alfred Drake was Broadway's top leading man and sounds just glorious. Pat Morrison had less of a career but sounds just perfect as Lilli. Lisa Kirk is wonderful as Lois, and Harold Lang makes the most of his few moments on the record as her boyfriend, Bill. In an unusual move these peopel reunited 10 years later to re-record the score for Capitol in true stereo. They still sound great on that recording (on CD as part of the Broadway Angel series) but the performances are fresher on this recording made just 2 weeks after KIS ME KATE had opened on Broadway to rave reviews.

The CD booklet has good info about the show, though curiously, no synopsis. There are, however, a half dozen pictures of the original production. This edition featureds longer takes of "We Open in Venice", "I Hate Men" and "Too Darn Hot" though the total extra music adds but a minute to the album's running time. A bonus track of the Overture dates from a 1958 stereo recording by Lehman Engle.

KISS ME KATE is still regarded as Cole Porter's greatest musical; a charming backstage story detailing feuding ex-spouses Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham as they star in a musical version of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew".

Very rarely has the score been bettered than the original 1949 cast album, reissued here on the Columbia Broadway Masterworks label. Patricia Morison plays Lilli, with Alfred Drake (OKLAHOMA!, KISMET, GIGI) as Fred, the feuding, ego-ridden leads. Lisa Kirk (ALLEGRO, MACK AND MABEL) is the sexy young starlet Lois, with Harold Lang (PAL JOEY) as her caddish boyfriend Bill.

KISS ME KATE opened at the New Century Theatre on Broadway in 1949, making history in its run of over 1000 performances. Patricia Morison is perfectly-suited to the role of Lilli. She offers a glowing rendition of "So in Love", whilst her duet with Alfred Drake in the tongue-in-cheek "Wunderbar" is sublime. Lisa Kirk gets three of the big showstoppers ("Why Can't You Behave?", "Tom Dick or Harry" and "Always True to You in My Fashion"), and nails each and every one. Harold Lang was a better dancer than he ever was as a singer, but is quite good on this disc.

A must-own.

Who Put The Shake In Shakespeare?.......2001-04-11

Who put the 'shake' in 'Shakespeare'? Cole Porter, of course! Kiss Me Kate is the best of his musicals, and this recording is the best of the recordings! The original Broadway cast performs with much old-style, vaudeville jazz!

The story is set in a Baltimore theatre where a divorced couple, Fred Graham and Lilli Vannessi, are in the two leading roles of a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Fred currently dates a colorful light-heart named Lois Lane, while Lilli is about to head off to get maried in the south. Lois, by the way, will 'always be true' to her boyfriend, the gambling player Bill Calhoun. The story takes off from there!

The show originaly opened on Broadway in 1948. It's timelessness has still not worn off after so many years. The classic script by Bela and Sam Spewack, and the best music of Cole Porter, we cannot fail! The show has been performed since then in many many countries, and has been performed in many languages! It has only recently been revived on Broadway.

Kiss Me Kate has become a staple of classic Broadway, and this is the cast that will not be outdone. Patricia Morrison is a perfect, operatic, Lilli Vanesi. She is strong, yet thoughtful. Her voice fills the CD with a lively 'Wunderbar' and the raging 'I Hate Men.' Alfred Drake is a manly and appealing Fred Graham who will have you laughing out loud! His 'Where Is the Live...?' is yet to be surpassed. Harold Lang is a sexy, and hypnotic Bill Calhoun. He takes the role for himself, and his 'Bianca' is done to the point of perfection! His voice is misty and self-confident, and has the qualities all Bill Calhoun's should. And of course, there will be no one as good as Lisa Kirk for the role of Lois Lane! Her tongue-in-cheek performance on this CD is flawless! She is teasing, sympathetic, funny, and has the right voice to win her part! I can't imagine anyone who can do what she has done with 'Alway True to You' and 'Why Can't You Behave.' The classic character songs are very nice! The balladic, and melodic 'So In Love' will ring in your head. 'We Open In Venice' will make you dance! And 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare'(performed with much humor by Jack Diamond and Harry Clark) will give you a laugh the next time you read 'Romeo.' You won't be disapointed!

The nostalgic quality of the 40's is alive and well in this recording. Columbia has done a great job restoring the work, and the scratching that were a part of the original releases. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the music sounds wonderful! The magic hasn't worn out yet!

There have been a few more recordings of the work, including a complete London recording, and the new Broadway revival cast. None can do as well as the original recording, however. In the revival recordng, however, they come close. Brian Stokes Mitchell has the voice for Fred, but runs through his lines a bit fast, and without much enthusiasm. And the orchestrations for the new recording are a bit overdone, and they sound more like PBS's Jazz, than Broadway.

Altogether, this is great recording. I was very pleased with my buy, and hope that you will add it to your collection right away! It's time to Brush Up Your Shakespeare!

I had this on cassette back in the day, but it decomposed with age and became un-playable. When I discovered it had been re-issued, I wasted no time in getting it. Now I can't listen to anything else! This CD is late 80's/early 90's metal that will make your brain bleed! All tracks are an eleven on a scale of one to ten, but for me, the stand-out tracks are "Back on the Bitch", "Switchblade Serenade", "Thru These Eyes", "Spread Eagle", "42nd Street", and "Shotgun Kiss". Ray West's voice is custom-made for high energy metal, and it really compliments the skull-crushing guitar work. I would describe their sound like this: Take one part Guns 'n Roses, one part AC/DC, two parts Accept, put it all in a blender and throw in a dash of Skid Row. Voila! Spread Eagle!

It's great to see this CD back out. A best-kept secret. Spread Eagle has an energy level and musical prowess matched only by bands like Van Halen and Megadeth. These guys are NOT kidding around. It's really heavy, but without being gloomy. Very few bands can shred this hard and still maintain a melodic, sexy feel to the music. One of my favorites! You gotta hear this!

Thanks Lovember Records for this Awesome reissue!!! This classic reissue is a great album and is exactly what one would expect from Spread Eagle. They deliver a hard rock album that stays true to their roots and offers up enough time changes to make everything sound fresh. Spread Eagle showed on this release how much talent they had, and it translated into huge commercial success.

Amazing Debut!.......2007-03-19

I can't believe this record has been reissued!! Thank God for the people at Lovember Records. The remastering on this cd blows the original away. Spread Eagle's debut is one of the best records I've ever heard. The guitar player shreds like the best of them, the singer has a very unique voice but most of all their songs are "real". They had everything a rock band should have: LOTS OF ATTITUDE!

The lyrics for "Thru These Eyes" are incredible. "Suzy Suicide" reminds me a bit of Motorhead. "Switchblade Serenade" use to get played on rock radio non-stop and MTV's Headbanger Ball. If you like your rock loud and raw then buy this record. You WON'T be disappointed.
