This is too much, this is awesome! .......2007-07-26
I found this one at a Borders store I believe it was and was amazed it was even available. Obituary was the first Death Metal band I ever listened to and I had the old CD of "Slowly We Rot" only, and to get their first 2 CD's for a decent price, remastered, with extra tracks was just too much of a good thing I thought. The great part about these types of packages is the amount of space they take up also, I may get the next two CD's also eventually.
Eventually I've gotten into bands like Death, Morbid Angel, and of course who can leave out Possessed and their "Seven Churches" CD..which I guess can be considered an early version of a DM band. Obituary remains my favorite of all time though, "Slowly We Rot" I can listen to over and over, especially in the fall (Halloween season), just sets the mood perfectly at times. I've taken a liking to DM Bands who started out in the late 80's. The new stuff I could care less about, but these bands are the founding fathers of death, and it's just awesome to see them re-issued and remastered over the years! If you are into Death Metal at all, and are just starting out or whatever, do yourself a favor and check out the beginnings of the genre and some of these bands that started it all.
These "remasters" are horrible - .......2007-01-06
Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death are two amazing death metal albums. Roadrunner has issues a lot of these 2 for 1 packages (suffocation, gorguts, etc...), and to be honest, its a rip off. The inserts have nothing new, and its just 1 piece of papaer with no additonal information; not even a band history has been added. It really just a waste. If you already own these two albums, there is no need to pick this up. Also, I notice no difference in the sound compared to the original CD's.
GREAT OLD-SCHOOL DEATH METAL!!!.......2006-05-06
Obituary was one of the main DM bands to come out of Florida in the late 80's- early 90's. They disbanded for a while, but recently got back together & released another album, "Frozen in Time," which I hear is actually pretty good. But I guarentee it DOES NOT beat either of these 2 masterpeices... I don't know which one of these I like better. I'd have to say at 1st I liked "Cause of Death" better, but I've been listening to "Slowly We Rot" again lately, & it's just as good. I recommend this "2 From the vault" double pack because you get BOTH of their original classics remastered and for the same price as you'd pay for just one of them by themselves. Great DM here, get on the ball & get it man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its fathersday, & i want my cake........2005-01-12
if a rotting corpes popped out of the ground & started talking to you, he would sound like john tardy.i heard that on the 1st album ("slowly..") they did'nt even bother to write lyrics for a lot of the songs.he would just scream, growl, grunt,& howl whatever sounded right.this may turn some people off but its so cool to me.this may have came out 4 or 5 years after "scream bloody gore" & "seven churches" but i still consider obituary 5 of the founding fathers of death metal.nothing realy stands out on either album from any other part of either album(did that make sence?).no one band member realy stands out either .they all compliment one another equally here for two well rounded & very entertaining cds.i would have to say, though that if somone asked me what death metal was i'd have to pop in "cause of death" track 7 ,the title track.
Terrific set worth buying.......2004-07-10
Obituary was one of the myriad of death metal bands to rise out of Florida in the late '80s, along with bands like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Death. And they are probably the best of those bands. Sure, they're pretty much a more extreme version of Death's first album, but the music IS very good, and there are some doom-metal bits scattered over both these albums. While the albums here aren't as good as their next two albums (with Cause of Death being their career lowpoint), there are enough good songs on here to warrent picking this up. Everything sounds great with the remastering, and there's a few bonus tracks for each album.
On the downside, no lyrics are included (though the vocal are partially understandable). Plus, the cover artwork is horrible. What's with the cheesy, kinda CG looking hands and crypt, with the bands name looking very out of place? Would it have been so hard to simply have the band logo, and pictures of the albums included?
Despite the packaging, this set is still worth picking up for it's low price and great music.

This album is a classic. All of the songs are very good and memorable. The continuation between the songs is slightly different than most albums. No Filler On This Killer.......2006-07-28
After Slowly We Rot Obituary was THE death metal band. Slowly We Rot was and is one of the most talked about death metal debuts ever, and with good reason, but after that tour Obituary lost two of its members, which was a huge blow to the band. Allen West leaveing was especially hard on the band because his guitar work was one of the reasons they stuck out amongst the other bands in the rising death metal genre. Luckily Scott Burns the producer knew of a recently out of work guitarist by the name of James Murphy. James Murphy at that time recently ousted from Death came in to replace Allen West as lead guitarist. Though the guitarists differ in their style, Murphy doesn't hurt the band at all, in fact this is one of Obituary's best albums. From Infected to Chopped In Half to Turned Inside Out(not to mention the redone Find The Arise and the Celtic Frost cover of Circle Of The Tyrants)this album never gets flacid. This is one album you will listen to over and over and never get bored. This album has become known as the James Murphy album, and trust me, thats not a bad thing. All in all worth your time and money, if you can find the remastered version by itself(which I believe this is) get it, stay away from those combo 2 in 1 versions.
If you like this album look up the classic Slowly We Rot debut.
Thank you for reading.
NO MERCY SHOWN HERE!!!.......2006-07-07
This without a doubt is one of the most BRUTAL albums in all of death metal. The funny thing is, it's not even that fast, and that's the great lesson here that's all too easily forgotten: being HEAVY cannot rely on speed alone. Yet do not worry speedaholics, there are still plenty of blast beats to snap your neck to. While John Tardy's Chuck Schuldiner-esque vocals grab you by the throat and never let go, it is lead guitarist James Murphy who truly shines on Cause of Death. What a terribly overlooked player! He pulls off some great sweep picking and fretboard tapping techniques, and his tone is immaculate. There are plenty of great riffs to be found here, played in a wicked drop-D tuning. Also, there are some very eerie sound effects that are sustained throughout the album, that act as a bridge from one song to the next. Evil! The entire tracklist is good, but IMHO the strongest material is probably "Infected," "Body Bag" and the title track.
Florida's answer to brutallity.......2006-06-29
I started listening to obituary around a year and a half ago and basically their albums are in heavy circulation in my radio, car stereo(love scaring all the emo kids) and my ipod. Obituary has a combination of thrash, death, melodic and even some tech in them which makes for a interesting and killer sound. Lead singer John Tardy has a very almost unique voice(a la Chuck Schuldiner of Death style) a combination of a screaming and screeching growl and can deliver some brutal melo death vocals that easilly scare the masses. The shredding abilities of twin axemen Trevor Peres and James Murphy deliver brutal riffs, and some skull crushing solos. Donald Tardy delivers a non stop onslought of double bass drumming is one of metals most underrated greats.Frank Watkin's bass is great too .

There you have it, a metal must along with Slowly We Rot and Frozen in Time and even Death's albums too. So there you have a great enjoyible DM album, get this and don't get dissapointed and if you do go and listen to your Panic at the disco albums instead.
groovy death metal .......2006-04-21
This album represents dark and groovy metal with brutal psychotic screams.
Riffs get a bit repetitive, even though you will find yourself headbanging, and jumping as hell for "Dying", "Turned Inside Out" , "Chopped In Half", and "Memories Remain".
Well, also album has brilliant solos by James Merphy, respectable guitarist in metal world.
Just turn of the light and listen "Cause of Death" and get scared and brutalized by the power of this dark music

A Great Entry Disc For Modern Music.......2004-05-24
I can't think of a more "user friendly" way for those listeners who find Berg, Schoenberg & Webern somehow "too atonal" or "too intellectually complex" to get more exposed to that musical aesthetic. As just one example: the music Rosenman composed here for the Planetarium sequence in "Rebel Without A Cause," dealing with the creation of the Universe, is music of eloquent chaos - and it's right out of the 2nd movement from Alban Berg's Violin Concerto! Not a literal "lift and use" like film composer James Horner is so frequently guilty of (he used the slow mmvt. of the Shostakovich 5th in both "Patriot Games" and "Clear & Present Danger"), but more of an homage to Berg.
It boggles my mind that in 1955 film audiences in record numbers came to see this film about teenage alienation - and got exposed to the New Vienna School quite by accident! Adams' conducting is gorgeous, and the recorded sound is superb.
Rosenman was a pupil of both Schoenberg and Roger Sessions. I am also rather fond of his score for Ralph Bakshi's animated version of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." Rosenman went on to supervise the wonderful classical music selections used in Kubrick's film "Barry Lyndon." Kubrick here - and in "2001" and "The Shining" - probably did more for putting classical music in the mainstream than any other film director.
A word in Rosenman's defense.......2002-11-07
Michelle Kwan fans, I understand your need to warn others that this is not the cd you expected. But for those of you who are just interested in intelligent film music, it really doesn't get any better than this. Here's a man who really understands the needs of a film, what film music should do, and what music should do. Anybody interested in well constructed '50s film scores should pick this up immediately.
East of Eden.......2001-02-16
The album that supposedly has the East of Eden version used by Michelle Kwan is Beastmaster/Spash/Going Home.
Wrong CD.......1999-04-01
Not really a review. Just a clarification the piece skater Michelle Kwan used was composed by Lee Holdridge.
Passable, but not memorable.......1999-03-06
I was so excited while watching a tape of Michelle Kwan skating to "East of Eden". I had heard the music for years and could never remember the name. So, when I discovered there was a recording of it, I was enthralled. To my complete disappointment, the CD skips over the most lucid and poignant lines of the melody in favor of a sampling approach. I will probably never listen to the CD again. My only hope is Michelle will keep her program for a while.

Dean soundtrack melange has better version.......2005-08-16
The five cuts from EAST OF EDEN and the four cuts from REBEL were lifted directly from the film soundtrack music masters, but pressed onto lp and 45 rpm in mono only. The three pieces from GIANT are poor. These pieces had to be short in order to fit on 45 rpm formats as well as lp, so no more than 3.5 minutes from each cut could be recorded onto the vinyl pressings.
You can find all the music from EDEN and REBEL presented here plus lots more from both films' musical tracks in the album A TRIBUTE TO LEONARD ROSENMAN. John Adams conducts the London Sinfonietta, perfectly capturing the original orchestrations and tempi -it's like listening to the film's track, but in full stereo and you get lots more music for your money. Stick to that one and leave this one alone.
Really great movie music!.......2003-06-25
Without any doubt, James Dean is and will be one of the most remembered actors in a whole galaxy of movie stars.
Although his career covered only three feature movies, they still stand as classics, and so does the music!
For the first two features "East Of Eden" and "Rebel Without A Cause", the producers turned to Leonard Rosenman, who (although these were some of his first works) created outstanding scores for both.
While "East Of Eden", JD's first major movie, is an outstanding symphonic work (based on the never-forgotten main theme), "Rebel Without A Cause" includes more jazzy tones.
Warner-veteran Dimtri Tiomkin scored the final of the three features, "Giant". Although I regard all three scores among my favorite soundtracks, I think, "Giant" is the most outstanding. Tiomkin's variations of the three main themes (Giant, There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You, Jett Rink) are nostalgic treasures, nobody should miss! I can't wait, when they're finally going to release the entire score! The two cuts from ?Giant? included here are the ?Giant? theme and ?There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You?. These two tracks do not appear in the movie in this form, but were recorded to promote the film. As a bonus, the producers have added Mitch Miller?s ever-popular recording of ?The Yellow Rose Of Texas?.
Last, but not least, this album is the best possibility to get the soundtrack to these three great movies! Previous issues included drastical hiss and other noise or were taken directly from the music and effect track of the movies!

Donald Tardy delivers a non stop onslought of double bass drumming is one of metals most underrated greats.Frank Watkin's bass is great too .

groovy death metal .......2006-04-21
This album represents dark and groovy metal with brutal psychotic screams.
Riffs get a bit repetitive, even though you will find yourself headbanging, and jumping as hell for "Dying", "Turned Inside Out" , "Chopped In Half", and "Memories Remain".
Well, also album has brilliant solos by James Merphy, respectable guitarist in metal world.
Just turn of the light and listen "Cause of Death" and get scared and brutalized by the power of this dark music

The last album from this german outfit, now with Dan Lilker on bass. By this time Sabina Clasen is gone to Temple of the Absurd, and HM is a three-piece band. Death-metal/hardcore it is (as you might have guessed), and quite good one. Fans of Ryker's should check it out (the latest album from Ryker's features a drummer from this lineup of Holy Moses).
