4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to '70's punk........2007-06-08

This boxed set has many great and classic punk songs. I would recommend it particularly to young people today who didn't live in the late '70's. Back in '78 or so, some of this type of music is what really got me interested in rock'n'roll to begin with. I think it's a great collection, but Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and some others who were really not true punk rock, don't really belong on this set. However, it's good to see many of the New York (CBGB) bands here. This is the true rebellious music of the 1970's, just like rockabilly was in the 1950's, even though the genres and styles are completely different.

5 out of 5 stars "Yes Thanks" to No Thanks.......2007-02-09

This was a gift for a really good friend for her birthday and I just gave it to her the other day. She called me the next day and said she hadn't stopped playing the CD box set on her stereo and in her car because it brought her back to being 13 again when punk was in its infancy. She loved it.

So I guess anyone who enjoyed this era of punk will enjoy this CD box set immensely.

4 out of 5 stars The soundtrack to my college years.......2006-10-21

This set takes me right back to smoky clubs and spiky-haired boys with black nails and eyeliner. Good times. Good music.

I have to agree with previous reviewers, though - this is not an overview of the punk movement by any stretch of the imagination. Luckily for me, that's not why I bought it. If you're looking for a representative collection of early punk, keep walking. But if you're looking to reconnect with your mis-spent youth, this is the place.

2 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph.......2006-05-15

It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78. The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

Amazon.com essential recording

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars My intro. to Suicidal Tendencies.......2005-05-13

As my title says, this was the first Suicidal Tendencies album I got. I expected it to sound punky, as everyone says they're so good a punk band. I was surprised, and NOT the bad kind! This album is straight forward metal. The first two albums had a punk influence, but HCILTWICEST and everything afterwards was a metal album. This is one of the best albums of the 90's. Mike Muir's vocals are top-notch here. Rob Trujillo's bass is great, the guitars from Mike Clark and the other guitarist (forgot his name...sorry!) are great, as are the drums. The album starts out with "Cant' Stop". NO, not the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song! It's one of the longer songs, but it's a great start to this great album. The next songs, "Accept My Sacrifice" and "Nobody Hears", are my favorite songs on this album. I like all the songs on this album, but the above three are my favorites. Recommended if you like metal, speed metal, and Suicidal Tendencies.

5 out of 5 stars It contains one of the most mesmerizing songs ever!!!.......2005-03-09

I am 36 and have been listening to hard rock/metal since I was only nine. I own more than 1,500 hard rock/metal CDs. I am not bragging here, but rather trying to put things into perspective when talking about this album.

This whole album is incredible. It's easily ST's best, but you got to let it grow on you for a while. This CD contains ST's best song ever, and one of my top ten songs of all time: "Asleep at the Wheel". I probably have listened to that song more than 1,000,000 times since this CD came out, and I still close my eyes and sing it out loud EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! It's a very original song, impossible to describe with words. It's magical, it's mesmerizing (By the way, you may skip the first two minutes of the song since they are very forgettable and have actually a different name - "I Wasn't Meant to Feel This").

Another great song is "Monopoly of Sorrow", especially after the 3:37 mark. This has to be one of the best song endings that I have ever herad. That combination of fast pace acoustic and electric guitars is simply top notch.

Anyway, get this CD and let it grow on you. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Hard rock can be art.......2005-02-25

When I bought this album I didnt get what I thought I was getting into. For awhile I was highly dissappointed listening to it, and to be honest I didnt like it to much. I gave 'The Art of Rebellion' some time though, and it grew on me. The lyrics can be a bit corny and annoying some of the time though, and that brings it down a half point - from a perfect five to a 4.5. Thats still really great, and perfect albums that truly warrent five stars are really far in between for me though. For anyone who wants an album they can listen to years for now (unlike those whiny emo bands who will be gone after the fad wears off), then pick up this album. You cant stop the run away emotions in me, you know... Never mind. Buy the album and you will know what I'm talking about.

5 out of 5 stars I agree--best ST album and last good one.......2005-01-19

I love this disk,I am a huge fan and like all there stuff up to this cd.after that it went pretty down hill.
every song grabs you from start to end.
a lot of people did not think it was hard enough, but it is and it has some real musical substance.i say buy it you wont be sorry. I would give more stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars A good comeback after "Lights".......2004-04-07

This album is more like "Lights" than "How Will I Laugh" in it's song writing style but done way better. The tunes are good, not dry like "Lights" and the album feels well-produced. You'll find the songs high in content and quality but not that fast or thrashy. This is NOTHING like early S.T.'s but it is a good album nonetheless. I regard this as Suicidal's last good album. Trust me, after this, it's completely downhill in the worst way.

4 out of 5 stars I still dig it, though maybe not as much as I used to..........2007-07-29

This was one of my first Zappa albums, and I still play it from time to time. It's not as good as some of the later albums I picked up, but it's still worthwhile. There is plenty here to please all Zappa fans, such as the amazing guitar work on Easy Meat (and Vinnie Colauita's amazing drumming), and there are some excellent remakes of earlier songs. The song Love of My Life from Ruben and the Jets is much better on this album, with a great Zappa vocal and Bob Harris's excellent falsetto vocals. Tell Me You Love Me is more dynamic than the Chunga's Revenge version. I may be one of the few people who likes the new version of Brown Shoes Don't Make It. I think it's better than the original. I don't like Peaches III at all, even when I first picked up the album (I hadn't heard the original version at that time). Now You See It, Now You Don't is an excellent Zappa instrumental (despite a rather lame title). Now, there is average/mediocre material here. The "songs" Panty Rap and Dance Contest are really just Zappa sounding like a sleazy carnival/strip show hawker while the band just doodles (even though there's a brief drum breakout by Vinnie on Panty Rap). Some of the lyrics are very smug, like on The Blue Light, where Zappa obsesses about ugly, waxy cheese and lame Shakey's customers. It sounds almost Gen Xish, "ironic", and that type of thinking I've always hated. But on the flip side, the title song is still good today. Zappa goes on about the demise of the music business (I love the line "and pray that the business don't collapse"), which is still going on today. This is still a good album, even though I don't like it as much as I used to.

4 out of 5 stars One Heck Of A Good Album Of New & Old Delights!!!.......2006-03-24

This 1981 album has old FZ classics but they are all performed completely different from their originals.

"Peaches III" is Peaches En Regalia played marvelously on electric guitar.

"I ain't got no heart" is played at a very fast speed as opposed to the original downbeat version on "Freak Out" and you can hear Zappa sing it this time...finally!

You get Zappa also singing "Tell me you love me" instead of Flo & Eddie (a BIG PLUS to the fans who detest Flo & Eddie).

Zappa also sings "Love of my life" instead of the original Ray Collins version from "Ruben & The Jets."

All of these versions may be inferior or superior to the originals...that is not the point. The point is that they are all done very differently than the originals and, to some, sound like totally new songs.

The new delights include: "Fine Girl" - a tribute to the hard-working women of the past.

"Easy meat" has an awesome keyboard solo performed by the talented Thomas "Tommy" Mars.

"For the young sophisticate" makes its premiere here but it is not as good as the version found on the "Lather" album.

"The Blue Light" is a half-sung half-spoken MELT-DOWN track similar to "The Dangerous Kitchen" but not as good.

"Pick Me, I'm Clean" is NOT really about a groupie of the band but about an interracial relationship involving a woman who is just learning to speak English. This song also examines the different sexual preferences of the band (going "bare back" is gay; going "wet-back" is dating a mexican; going "way back" is dating older women; "should get back" is not dating anyone).

The previous song and the blues-influenced "Bambbozled by love" perfectly capture the activity and attitude of polar-opposite sexual relationships.

This album is not a disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars Easily among Zappa's worst efforts.......2005-12-09

The most disposable and forgettable of Zappa's efforts. Even the recycled material from earlier - and much better albums - comes off very weakly against even weaker new material. Don't bother.

2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2005-06-09

You see, all reviews on this page are positive, but I gotta warn you: this album isn't generally very high-rated among Zappa fans! It sounds a little bit messy (especially "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" - really horrible version of that song), synths are horrible-sounding , there is a lot of filler (spoken tracks or some boring melodies like Easy Meat or Fine Girl), and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta is nowhere as great as on Joe's Garage or Shut Up and Play... Yes, there are a few good (not great) songs - for example the title track, one of a few really tight songs here, but most of this album sounds like an half-mess or very minimalistic on Zappa standards. And I also could live without new versions of some oldies - they're mostly OK, but originals are better, or MUCH better (Peaches III, Brown Shoes).

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2004-07-04

This record includes some of my favorite Zappa pieces played by a band that is anything but under-rehearsed. The production is clear and rich. Vinnie Caliauta's playing is electric and drives these big bands with power and precision. He shows us why Zappa considered him the best drummer he ever worked with (and Zappa worked with some damned fine drummers.)

I enjoy most era's and aspects of Frank's music, but I have a special appreciation for some of the live recordings from this period through the eighties. (Granted, some of them are sterile and some are down-right goofy. This is not one of those.) Let's not forget that Zappa's music is difficult and that he was a very demanding band leader. As his career progressed, he had his pick of more and better musicians who were capable of things that former band memebers just could not do.

5 out of 5 stars Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

        1 out of 5 stars Infinite Felicity - Not.......2006-02-05

One of the greatest disappointments I have ever had in my life was listening to the recordings of Purcell's music that were made in the 1990s by Robert "Everything He Touches Turns To Dross" King. The physical impact of the recordings was comparable to a strand of wet spaghetti and it takes real talent in a conductor to make James Bowman sound so ordinary so much of the time. Particular scorn must be reserved for the casting of Michael George. (What is the difference between Michael George and George Michael ? Answer: George Michael has a voice that is pleasing to listen to.) Michael George has a tolerable light baritone provided the dynamic never gets above mezzo-forte and provided the coloratura never gets out of first gear. (It can be heard to good effect on Hyperion's recordings of Bruckner's and Faure's Requiems.) However, John Gosling, Purcell's miraculous basso profundo of the seventeenth century, he most emphatically is *not*. If David Thomas (the only man for the job) was unavailable then the recordings should not have been attempted.

The problem is that these dreadful recordings have Hyperion's imprimature and so this divine music will probably have to endure a purgatorial wait of at least a generation for a new complete recording.

I'm sorry to see that King has finished with Vivaldi's sacred music. This is a pity, because the amount of damage he can do in this field is limited; let's face it people, once you've got the Four Seasons and the Glorias you've got everything.

A new project for King is clearly required along the same lines. May I suggest a complete recording of the Telemann cantatas ? Then we can all sleep peacefully in our beds until the time comes to sleep peacefully in our graves.

5 out of 5 stars Important Purcell Project.......2001-06-12

It was by this project that I made the acquaintance of Henry Purcell and his music. He just knocked me flat. How I love the elegance, gaiety and wistfulness (to name but a few characteristics) of his music. For this first Purcellian project (started in the mid eighties), director Robert King assembled a truly crack team of Early music soloists and musicians, he also provided extensive commentary in the booklet and wrote a biography on Purcell. This venture entailed the recording of the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs (composed for Royalty and festive occassions).

Only in the famous Hail Bright Cecilia and Come Ye sons of art away, the Choir of New College, Oxford lends it's support otherwise the soloists themselves perform the choral parts. Which certainly contributes to the intimacy of the recording. Robert King is certainly right in saying that the texts of these pieces aren't great poetry, but the music is divine (the usual flatttering of kings and nobles)! King and his team deliver an outstanding and important contribution to the Purcell discography.

My favourites among the soloists were: Gillian Fisher, James Bowman, Michael Chance, Michael George, Charles Daniels, Rogers Covey-Crump and John Mark Ainsley. Charles Daniels pulls this project indeed spendidly off with his solo Arise my muse. I loved the exquisite countertenor duets like Hail gracious Gloriana or Sound the trumpet and always Michael George's bass parts. But that's just a selection of the riches presented here. Afterwards Robert King went on to record the complete secular solo- and sacred music of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars valuable and enjoyable.......2000-01-12

This set will delight any lover of Purcell. Ideally, you will want all 8 CD's; but if you must pick and choose, get at least Vols 1, 2 & 8 (these contain, between them, Welcome to all the pleasures, Hail Bright Cecilia and Come ye sons of art). Volume 1, entitled Royal and Ceremonial Odes, was probably recorded before King knew for sure that his idea of producing the complete chamber vocal works of Purcell would be commercially viable. Hence, the separate title and no mention of the volumes still to come. But by the time the second volume was made, the future of the project was already mapped out. The purpose of the project was to record all 24 surviving odes and welcome songs of Purcell. (This project was later followed by a similar undertaking: an 11-CD set of all surviving Purcell's anthems and services - of those, get at least vols 3 & 9). By the time King was entrusted with this massive and ambitious project, he was still in his twenties. But King knew what he was doing. His assumption of the project was backed by years of research. He even prepared his own performing editions of the works he intended to record, and furnished sleeve notes for each of the CD's in his Purcell series (Later, he also wrote a book about the composer). King's notes are insightful, although his choice of vocabulary is somewhat peculiar and repetitive. The musical results are wonderful, by all accounts. I am especially pleased that King was able to assemble such an outstanding cast of singers. For me, the highlights of the series include: Arise my muse from vol 1 (an alto solo sung by Charles Daniels); Bowman's 'Tis Nature's Voice from vol 2 (although my all time favorite version of this air is on the Herreweghe); alto-high tenor duet Let Caesar and Urania live from vol 3 (you should hear Bowman and Covey-Crump blend in this one!); The sparrow and the gentle dove from vol 4 (Charles Daniels); alto-high tenor duet Sweetness of nature from vol 6 (Bowman and Padmore); an ornate tenor duet And now when the renowned Nassau from vol 7 (Daniels and Covey-Crump); and the glorious high tenor solo O how blest is the isle from vol 8 (Padmore).

This is where Agathodaimon begins to show signs of uncertainty and imperfections in their keyboard department and production. Now don't get me wrong, this is gorgeous piece but I can't get over the fact that the band is implementing some terrible elements in their music. For instance, I absolutely dislike the introduction to the first song, which is a warpy technoish sound; like that of a jammed tape on a very old tape-recorder that progresses into a silly increase and decrease in volume only to evolve into the full song and growl of the first words on the "Ne Cheamã Pãmĭntul". It's seriously downright silly and when you own the full discography of Agathodaimon you understand vividly how these "tricks" in production have turned into a malignant cancer that has now crippled their sound but I shall leave that for future reviews on their latter work. That's the only downside to this album, and thankfully is kept to a rightful minimum. On the third track, you'll find the song "Glasul Artei Viitoare" fading out in silence, only to surface up again and finish a few seconds later with totally different drumming arrangements in cymbals and corny synths. I mean sure it's stuff that lasts a few seconds, but really guys, what's the motive behind it, other than to flaunt a little volume tweaking at the studio with disposable ideas. Now this is me being extremely obsessive and picky on something that would go amiss on someone else's perception but that there; is the root of all malevolent evil bound to destroy my appreciation for the band and it has. I absolutely detest their last album (Serpent's Embrace)

Now onto the good stuff... the album was crafted in Romania in search to integrate Vlad in the band once again, seeing that harsh German immigration laws deprived this former Vocalist/Keyboardist from ever coming back. Now, not only will you pleasantly hear Vlad and Akaias, but also the introduction of clean vocals beautifully done by Byron. There's a bit of twin vocals with Vlad and Akaias in many instances that give this album a different and impressive touch. They still attain that dark and romantic atmosphere to their music, except here it's totally different and deviates a little from Black Metal foundations and moving into mellower grounds, but in a graceful fashion. Immensely satisfied I was when I landed my hands on this one; for it is different but sadly slightly flawed with silly bits and pieces here and there; right in the middle of a great finger work by Vlad on "Heaven's Coffin", there is a rude and hapless interruption of an unneeded whispery mourn. Grrrr!!!

Ribbon/Requiem '99 is an nice re-make of a glorious piece with now clean vocals, in a wishbone arrangement that becomes vividly uplifting as it waltzes across but falling a little too short.

So yeah, give this a spin if you like variety in your dark obsessions with love, passion, eroticism and a macabre bloodthirsty exuberant fascination for HEAVY METAL. Great side dish to have in your music collection.

3 out of 5 stars Two steps forward, three steps back..........2001-10-23

Ok, I'm not much a fan of Black Metal as a whole, but Blacken The Angel is one of the most cherrished CDs in my collection. Needless to say I was quite thrilled to hear Agathodaimon was putting out a new album, and promptly snatched it up at first sight. Well, my thrill quickly subsided into a confuzzled "What the..." upon listening to the album. Not to say that the material itself isn't good, or that the addition of a clean vocalist wasn't a pleasant surprise, but the album production is ABYSMAL. Not raw, not "fashionably unpolished" bloody ABYSMAL. You'd think a bands 2nd release would sound better than their demo for crying out loud. It doesn't end there, however, perhaps it's just the ABYSMAL (that's the key word today) production, but it seems to me that the band is totally out of sync with their performance. At any rate, it's not terrible, but definitly a let down compared to Blacken The Angel.

This cd has so many different elements, it is great. At one song, you're hearing Romanian(I have to agree is the most evil, yet cool sounding language I've ever heard), then you're in English. At one point in the song you're in growls, then singing. It is a great CD that is able to be listened to over and over again. I wonder what they are like live...

5 out of 5 stars The Black Metal release for the 1st Half of 2000.......2000-07-03

The word Agathodaimon represents a riddle that means evolution, and this band has evolved since their debut release. They eschewed the excessive death growls, downplayed the keyboard usage, and dirtied the production (probably due to recording in a Romanian studio) for this release. This is the most bass-heavy Black Metal release I've ever heard. The lyrics are in English and Romanian, are written by the Romanian vocalist Vlad, and are inspired by poets like Eminescu, Bacovia, and Minulescu (although Vlad's English occasionally falters). I must admit that Romanian is, bar none, the EVILEST sounding language I've ever heard sung. Being one of the best releases I've heard this year, I already bought my own copy of the cd.

Now, for my DJ's review of the cd, track by track. 1) This battle hymn is sung entirely in Romanian. The pace is slow and march- ready. The vocals consist of perfectly annunciated growls. Read the lyrics as they're sung to feel the full-effect. The song starts low, then gets louder EEE 2) L 3) Gothic intro. Most of the lyrics are Romanian growls, but not as powerful as track 1. This track ranges from clean-vocaled goth to heavy growls. Ee 4) Intro draws from NWOBHM. Vocals progress from clean to growl to screatch. Track is deceptively soft for how heavy it seems. ee 5) The guitars are heavier on this track. There's a lot of Paradise Lost influence, but this is far heavier than any PL song. EE1/2 6) Total goth that isn't ashamed of its metal roots. EE 7) L (expletives aren't printed for this one) 8) Filosofem-era Burzum guitar through much of track. Pretty Black. EE 9) Lyrics reminiscent of E.A. Poe; music rings of King Diamond. EE 10) You've got to love a German/Romanian Black Metal band opening a track w/ an impersonation of a Southern Baptist preacher, then following that w/ unholy Romanian utterings. Very dark mood. EE 11) More of a death metal feel. ee 12) For fans of Agathodaimon's 1st release: death/key heavy. Ee 13) More atmospheric and goth than the 1st version. So catchy it stuck in my head for 16 hours at work. EEE
