4 out of 5 stars Great Mack Followup.......2007-04-11

Lonnie Mack made a great followup record to a great record, "Strike Like Lightning." "Second Sight" continues the rich Mack tradition of hot licks, searing, bluesy, gospel-tinged vocals, and the history of a man who has lived long and hard. Songs like "Cincinnati Jail," "Camp Washington Chili," and "A Song I Haven't Sung" make this record enjoyable and compelling.

This is a great Mack record to add to "Lightning," "The Wham of That Memphis Man," and his many other great records.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2000-07-25

Yeah, this is a great album. Lonnie put his soul-blues stile in each songs with a lot of emotions. He plays three slow songs and some rock 'n roll with inspirated solos and powerful voice. If you searching for a good rock 'n roll cd, this is what you want.

4 out of 5 stars Good outing not his best but still worthwhile.......1999-11-08

Follow up to "Strike Like Lightning" does not have the same power but with the addition of horn lines has a different feel. That Lonnie mack vibrato is still all over the place as it should be. This disk ends with a showing of his Gospel roots with the sense of a man pouring out his soul for all to see and feel in the final cut "A Song I Haven't Sung". well now that it's been sung it needs to be repeated....and often.

    2 out of 5 stars oh man.......2003-10-25

sounds like new metallica if your into it thats fine but if you liked old speedealer stuff i don't reccomend this.

    3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing.......2002-10-02

After seeing Speedealer when they still had the REO in their name, I was hooked on their hard driving Zeke crosses Motorhead sound. Their first two albums, unfortunately now out of print rocked, and Here comes Death I feel is their best album yet, so I was realy looking foward to the new release. I felt if it was along the same lines of their past album, it could help them break through to getting some airplay. Unfortunately it was a big dissappointment with no stand out songs and a more commercialized sound that is pretty bland for these guys who I know have it in them to blow away all of todays so called heavy bands. I think maybe Jason Newsted was a mistake for producer, come to think of it Metallica was all down hill after he joined up with them. All in all it is worth a listen, but if you are expecting something like their outstanding older songs like Viva La Vulva, Dealers Choice, or Absinthe you'll be let down too.

2 out of 5 stars Blah. Just... blah........2002-07-30

I think every band and artist has a finite amount of creative juice in them, and at some point they run out. It can be really obvious in some cases. *AHEM* Speedealer never really had a lot of "juice" to begin with. They were a fun party band, they often played fast and hard, and they had "Hit It and Run," a song which is so catchy it's probably illegal. Well, now they've dried up. There is NO Hit It and Run on this record. ("Kill Myself Tonight" comes the closest, but it still doesn't come close.) This is just a CD full of bland, middle-of-the-road mid-tempo 'hard rock'. It's generic. It's tepid. It's boring. And it's too bad.

PS- Newstead's production work here is pretty damn mediocre, too. At least he's consistent.

    5 out of 5 stars Speedealer Rocks!!!.......2002-07-28

I never heard of Speedealer until I saw them open for Fu Manchu at the Exit/In in Nashville. These guys put on a great live show, so great that I bought there CD Second Sight. If you like hard rocking speed metal you will love this CD and this band.

1 out of 5 stars Demanded my money back from the record store!.......2004-03-15

This was probably the worst album I ever bought! I got it after reading an article about Kate in a bookstore publication. The lyrics and the music are fine, but this woman cannot sing to save her life! I don't doubt her musical pedigree, and loved the Dream Academy hit, but this was...wretched. Obviously this woman must have some musical talent...playing instruments...

    2 out of 5 stars Can't sing!.......2002-08-03

Please do yourself a favor and buy Van Morrison's sublime CD "No Guru, No Method, No Teacher." Kate St. John's oboe is the most beautiful contribution to some of Van's deepest and most sensitive music. I wish she could sing, so I could enjoy her efforts on her solo discs and "Channel Light Vessel" projects. But, well, she just can't sing. Listen to the samples and see if you don't agree.

    5 out of 5 stars a must-have for any music collection.......1999-12-01

I saw Jami Seiber play with Ferron last fall and Ferron had her play two songs off of this album during the show. It was so powerful and beautiful that I was actually brought to tears and I ran out and bought the album at the end of the show. Her playing will blow you away. She makes the cello express such a range of emotion and passion. The CD is great for relaxing, meditation, or just thinking in general. It definitely has been the best addition to my collection in years.

5 out of 5 stars a delicious spirit entralling cd. one of my 1999 favs........1999-08-17

i loved her cello piece the very first time that i heard it. if you have a musical soul, i don't think that you'll be disappointed.

Incredible listening pleasure. I came across Jamie Sieber at a Ferron Concert at the Left Bank in Blue Hill, ME as she was backing her up and of all the CD's I bought that night, this is the one that has received the most play. Meditation to a relaxing evening to the end of a hectic day, this CD puts me into a lucid state. I want "The Goat's Earth" at my funeral don't bury me under forest trees...when I die please bury me under the shade tree...I want to hear the drum beat, I want to feel the dancer's feet. A must to any collection.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

This second recorded meeting of Johnson's quartet with drummer Peter Erskine and celebrated guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield took place in 1987, and it's every bit as inspired as the first. Each member of the group contributes compositions, and they pick up on different qualities inherent in the band. Erskine's slow infusion of the gospel "Sweet Soul" offers Memphis soul notes to Scofield, while Frisell finds a comfortable base for some pedal steel-like country. Scofield's "The Twister" picks up on the rock basics implicit in the instrumentation--he and Frisell are both very electric guitarists here--and adds some harmonic complexity to the groove. Frisell's "1951" gives the listener a good idea of what Thelonious Monk writing quarter-tone country & western would sound like. There's much here that's playful, but there's also emotional power in the brooding force of Johnson's "Crossing the Corpus Callosum" and elegiac beauty in his "Hymn for Her." --Stuart Broomer

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as exceptional as expected!.......2006-03-09

Now this was oen huge disappointment. Do not get me wrong. I love Frisell and I completely agree with the other reviewer. It is simply that I was so blown away by the first bass Desires that I expected much much more. Also Bill Frisell has been associated with so many exceptional records that a very good record is simply not enough.

5 out of 5 stars The 5 Stars Go To Bill Frisell.......2006-01-07

I love John Scofield's guitar playing don't get me wrong, but the way he arranges his compositions aren't quite up to par with Bill Frisell's. First of all, look at what Bill Frisell has done in the past 20 years, and then look what Scofield has done. There's really no contest. Bill Frisell is one of biggest things to happen to jazz guitar since the Pat Metheny explosion in the late 70s. Like Pat Metheny, he plays unusual music, but what he's playing really works. I can't say the same for Scofield, because it seems he hasn't really pushed himself into anything experimental or exploratory, in fact, Sco hasn't really gone in a new direction at all. Sco has always stayed where he was at, which is okay, but I don't really feel inspired when I hear him play. Scofield is an exceptional player, but when it comes down to it, Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny are so much better at what they do then Scofield is at what he does. A good example of Bill Frisell pushing himself into ackward and new musical situations would be his collaborations and work on John Zorn's Naked City projects. I mean that is some of the most dissonant and absolutely insane jazz music I ever heard. Frisell has also been on more records than Scofield, and probably Metheny as well. If you don't believe me go to Bill Frisell's website and look up all his session work. That HUGE list will give you a little insight at what this virtuoso has been doing.

Now on to the review of Marc Johnson's Bass Desires "Second Sight" album. This is the second album by this group and I must say that I'm more impressed with it than the first, but it's hard to forget the unforgettable opening song on the first album, "Samurai Hee-Haw." That's a really good song and both Frisell and Scofield really sound great together. The music on this second album ("Second Sight") showcases the two players better I think than the first. They also seem to have a little bit more room to stretch composition wise. My favorite song on this album is "Small Hands" composed by Frisell. It's a very hauntingly beautiful song. It's this side of Bill that I love to hear more than anything.

I can't go on about this music. I just hope that however buys this album, that they have at least more than one Bill Frisell albums.

3 out of 5 stars Raw Sienna it ain't.......2002-09-06

Second sight will be a welcome addition to my collection but it does lack the raw power and the edge of earlier works such as Raw Sienna ( Savoy Brown ), City Child or Nowhere Road. Nowhere Road remains my favorite when it comes to solo efforts by Chris Youlden. As with many artist Chris Youlden's later works seem to loose the conviction of his earlier works. Recording quality is mixed in that the instruments are well recorded and produced but vocals are somewhat edgy. Probably the best recording of Chris Youlden's voice is the track " Love and Pain " on City Child produced by Chris himself. In any event " Second Sight " is a stylized, listenable if a somewhat watered down effort from one of my favorite vocalist.

    4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......1999-07-24

I really liked this effort by an old favorite. It's more of a pop sound than blues but I found it refreshing after listening to the same old stuff. His unique vocal sound is outstanding just like in the old days. It would be nice to see his other solo albums released on CD.

2 out of 5 stars No Savoy, No Blues.......1999-01-24

After recently swallowing the entire Youlden catalog , Savoy Brown style, ( Getting to the Point , probably the best blues ever laided down on one LP), it was disappointing to find this 90's experiment by Chris. The only thing I can say to all is , pick up Luther Allison's Hand Me Down My Moonshine if u want to here how to make a blues album today. How about releasing those 2 efforts after savoy brown, Chris, and lock up that mechanized rhythm section, and throw away the key, pls.

4 out of 5 stars Out of the blue!.......2001-11-19

I had never heard of Anthony Paule, but this CD is a real revelation. A great recording job, wonderful guitar playing, and the most unpretentious arrangements and fun attitude I've heard on a blues CD in a long time. Not bad at all, and a lot better than some of the overhyped Bling Pig and Alligator stuff that's been coming out lately. Give this a try, I'd be you really like it!
