Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.
Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15
The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.
Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13
Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!
Better Every Time.......2007-05-09
This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.
Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07
I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...
Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

"Mattress" CD was excellent.......2007-01-09
I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.
an oldie but a goodie.......2006-03-15
Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.
Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30
No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.
Awesome.......2006-01-22
My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.
Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.
My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy
Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!
I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19
Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.
Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.
I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

The American Experience Encapsulated.......2007-06-23
For more than twenty years now, I've been listening to this haunting music and it has never dulled. Revisiting it now, in my forties, I find it overwhelmingly sad....tracks #2 "Poverty" and #3 "Deborah's Theme" crystallize what I think is the theme of the movie: how a group of young people coming of age just when the country itself is coming into its own can, like the leadership of the country, make choices that impact the rest of their lives. Can they....can the country...find redemption? Like great fiction, and, many would say, like the movie, it has different meanings as you listen to it at different stages in your own life. I call that music for the ages. This one will be regarding as a classic long after my generation has left the earth.
Best Album Ever!.......2007-06-13
I've hundreds of movie soundtracks but this far by the best soundtract I've heard...The quality of the CD and the music from Morricone is timeless. The music is so haunting and so melancholic that feel inside of you. I highly recommend this album.
Once Upon a Time in America Soundtrack.......2007-03-18
For years I have trying to find this! It is beyond wonderful and moving!
One of the best movie soundtracks.......2007-03-08
Of all the soundtracks I own, this is probably the best. Morricone's skills and talent are evident on this CD. The information in the included leaflet give even more insight into the filming and composing of this classic film.
Timeless.......2005-02-24
You will not go wrong with this album. Every track is a masterpiece. If you loved the movie, you must have the accompanying soundtrack. I've had it for 15 years and when the mood strikes, there is nothing like it. Now, this version also comes with a few unreleased tracks. You can't lose!

LAGAAN.......2007-07-19
I was very satisfied with the CD. CD was of good quality and so was the case.
Familiar tune.......2006-03-24
There is one song in this album where the tune appears to be lifted from the Youssou N'Dour song, "Tourista", from his Guide album (1994). Still, the mix is quite captivating.
The Earth And Sky Are Ours!.......2006-03-11
'Lagaan' is an absolutely brilliant and inspiring Hindi film about determination, faith, unity and triumph. All these positive attributes are perfectly embodied within this incredible soundtrack.
From the chant-like 'Ghanan Ghanan', to the traditional dance number 'Radha Kaise Na Jale' and the defiant determination of 'Chale Chalo' this music will touch your emotions in so many different ways. And if 'Mitwa' doesn't bring you to your feet and get you dancing nothing will!
Pure Excellence.......2005-02-21
If you enjoyed the movie Lagaan, then you're sure to enjoy the soundtrack. Unlike most, this soundtrack actually contains the songs which are played in the movie. It's great for cultural indulgence!!
Great CD Even if you have not seen the movie. .......2004-10-06
Ghanan Ghanan is a great song. Very upbeat, uplifting and hopeful. (Danceable)
Mitwa also a great song. (Danceable)
Radha Kaise Na Jale. This one touched me greatly. (Danceable)
O Rey Chhori really nice love song
The others are really good as well but, these are my favorites.
Overall a must have.

Not as good as the film..........2007-05-06
I remembered the music in the movie as being a little better than it actually is. I was a little disappointed in the CD.
disappointing.......2007-03-26
It just wasn't what I thought it would be and I personally didn't like it. But it is good music.
it's all about the Malagueña.......2004-12-01
i loved the movie and the music there is good. i really like the Malagueña so i learned how to play it on guitar. the song is great i enjoyed the movie as much as i enjoyed the sound track
Start to Finish, a Real Mexi-CAN of a Soundtrack.......2004-11-30
Alright, so the main reason I got the soundtrack was Pistolero by Juno Reactor,a real driving, pumped-up techno song. I started to get into the rest of the music on the soundtrack, and I find it an essential cd I carry along with me. The great thing about this soundtrack is you can listen in on Mexican traditional music and a glimpse of the culture, and still have some real badass-sounding guitar! Whatever you may think of the film, you can imagine the actors playing their parts in your head, since they play and sing in the soundtrack (as the first one). There is an aura in the music I can't put my finger on; there's a history, an old feel to it, but it lingers with new musical ideas. Kinda like the movie, in terms of making it. I agree fullheartedly with previous reviews: where the movie fails, the music fills in the gaps and expands on Mexican music, making the entire movie/soundtrack experience very deep and epic. I dunno, maybe I'm rambling, but I emphasize that this soundtrack adds culture and kickass to your collection, as it did mine.
Better than the movie!.......2004-11-21
When I first saw this film I was shocked at its total stupidity. I was a big fan of the first Desperado and this sequel completely choked my enthusiasm. One thing that was good about this film though was the music. I have to admit it, the music was excellent and in harmony with the motion picture. The best tracks on this CD are Traeme Paz, El Mariachi and Siente Mi Amor (Salma Hayek brings out the best in her sensuality in this song). I'm not a big fan of Latino music but some of these songs are so beautiful they deserve to be listened to. Yo Te Quiero and Cuka Rocka both are well known songs and excellent to dance to, while Flor Del Mal is a very nice and chilling ballad. This CD is a great addition to your music collection, don't hesitate to buy it.

One of the most lyrical Western movie scores from one of the all-time greatest movie Westerns. Unlike the slightly more cartoonish music (in the Raymond Scott sense) for Sergio Leone's earlier "Man with No Name" Westerns starring Clint Eastwood (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), Once upon a Time in the West is epic in scope and elegiac in tone. Composer Ennio Morricone uses a haunting, wordless female vocal on the main theme (and in the equally beautiful soundtrack for Leone's companion gangster epic, Once upon a Time in America, many years later) that sends chills down your spine and may even bring tears to your eyes. --Jim Emerson

Spellbinding.......2007-06-02
This is one of the most underrated soundtracks of all time. A haunting, ethereal work of genius, just like the movie from which it's taken. Anyone who has seen Once Upon a Time in the West is invariably struck by the music, which mirrors the perfection of the film. For anyone who loves movie soundtracks and appreciates sheer brilliance, this is a must have for your collection.
This CD Got Its Hooks Into Me!.......2007-05-29
Once Upon A Time In The West was the first Western movie that I ever really liked. It beat out the spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood. The music haunts me. I especially love the tunes tied to the character, Jill (Claudia Cardinale). Most of the songs leave me feeling a little sad, and for some reason, prompt me to think of my childhood, and my past. So, it is a good kind of sad! I can listen to the main theme song, Once Upon A Time In The West, as well as Jill's America, over and over, and not grow tired of them! Man With A Harmonica gives me chills as I recall scenes from the movie with Charles Bronson. Of course, Farewell To Cheyenne is both sad and funny at the same time, evoking scenes with Jason Robards. A good CD, in my opinion!
The Greatest Western Movie Score.......2007-04-10
The Movie,"Once Upon A time in The West", is filled with movie stars, great scenery, and what I believe is the most beautiful musical score of any movie I have seen, and thats alot! From the opening song the music sets the stage for the action and creates a feeling that matches what you are seeing. This, for a western score, is passionate, full bodied like an excelelnt wine, and pulls emotions to the surface that you did not expect. Whether you are a movie fan or not, this album is well worth your time and deserves a listen.
Masterpiece.......2007-04-08
Ennio Morricone's orchestral majestic masterpiece for 'Once Upon a Time In The West' is one of the best movie scores of all time, and obviously ranks at the top in Western movie scores.
elegiac, grand, gritty, haunting, romantic, sweeping, witty.......2007-01-07
before director Sergio Leone shot his 2 hour, 47 minute western masterpiece, 'Once Upon A Time In The West', he commissioned composer Ennio Morricone to write and record the soundtrack for the actors and crew of his new film so they would all be in a certain emotional frame of mind when they performed... it is highly unusual for a film director to create the soundtrack for his film first, but a brilliant move also because the musical themes help connect the characters together from the very beginning, when you watch the film.
this brilliant, older film is the story of five interconnected characters, set at a transitional time in American history with the building of the transamerican railroad through a sleepy, widespread Arizona town: an ex-prostitute making a new life for herself, a monsterous, land-grabbing gunslinger, a cheap-but-shrewd opportunist, a quiet, mysterious avenger and The Old West itself; composer Morricone nails each player down with the insight of a psychologist and heart of an intimate lover as he lays open wide these larger-than-life characters for display with his thirteen brief, pointed tracks.
the soundtrack itself is only 38 minutes, 22 seconds, but highly memorable and one you will probably play over and over again. i recommend you buy the film also, and watch it a few times to further appreciate this masterfully written and performed soundtrack music; this way you can personally connect each character with their respective tracks.
it will probably bring tears to your eyes and chills down your spine...

Much has been made in press circles about Joseph Rojas and his real-life story of redemption. While there is no denying the authority he holds when he sings about how God has changed his life, it's time to focus his music. Once Upon A Shattered Life, the band's sophomore effort, is truly a breakout release and one worthy to be heard. There are many assets to this group's music including Rojas' powerful vocal presence, much akin to the likes of Mac Powell (Third Day) or Bart Millard (Mercy Me). Newcomer Ray Fryoux lays down a bed of steady beats and anchors a solid rhythm section with bassist Joshua Schwartz. Meanwhile, Jeremy Holderfield provides riveting guitar work throughout, especially on tracks like "Shattered Life" and "Chris' Letter." Smooth rockers like "I Believe" and "Brand New Man" display a simplicity and catchiness reminiscent of Jeremy Camp or Switchfoot. But while Slumber's modern rock sound may draw parallels, this band makes its own mark on tracks like "Make Believe" and "Back in Time," showcasing an offset rhythm and creative guitar work. The band can even bring it down as it does on the two softer closing numbers, "Masquerade" and "Oceans from the Rain." The release is a confident step forward for the band both creatively and (hopefully) commercially and should propel them into the upper echelons of Christian music. --Michael Lyttle

Awesome!.......2006-11-10
Seventh Day Slumber fills a space between hard-driving energetic punk and modern rock and does it with a heart for Christ. Fueled by the hurt experienced in thier young lives, Joseph Rojas, Jeremy Holderfield, and Josh Schwartz have successfully used their music to span the chasm between the hurt Satan would bind us in and the freedom found only in Christ Jesus.
Not only a great studio sound, but great in concert as well. I was fortunate enough to see them in a little dive with about 20 people in Greensboro, NC (I think it was the first concert for Ray Fryoux... Drums). I have to tell you, they were playing their hearts out for Jesus, not just for that small audience. Saw them again at Ichthus 2006 with an audience of around 5,000 ... same energy, same passion, same mission...and a few more great songs.
Highly recommended! These guys touch lives...like mine.
Energetic Christian Rock.......2006-04-18
I had never heard anything by Seventh Day Slumber until I saw them in concert when they were warming up for another group; they were pretty good.
This album combines some power rock sound with some positive, meaningful lyrics. I think that this sound would appeal to many fans of secular rock as well as Christian music fans.
There are three particularly good songs in this collection: 'Shattered Life', 'Caroline', and 'Oceans From The Rain'. Two others that are pretty good are 'I Believe' and 'Masquerade'. The others are ok, but nothing special.
If you like a heavier sound, this would be worth checking out.
Good but not Amazing.......2006-02-19
Definatly a good solid cd worht buying. But most of the songs are somewhat forgetable. Overall the First 3 track make the cd worth it. But there are better christian rock bands out there
ONE OF THE BEST CHRISTIAN ROCK BANDS OUT THERE!.......2005-12-08
I got to see Seventh Day Slumber this summer at ShoutFEST in San Antonio. I had never heard of them up till this point. We (my family) loved them. Right in the middle of the concert Joseph Rios stopped and did an alter call as he felt God was leading him to do this right then and there, it was one of the most moving moments in the concert with all the bands, Zoe Girl, Kutless. I have both of their CD's and they are by far my favorite Christian Rock Band and their Lyrics just minister to my heart!! I recommend them to anyone and everyone!!
Tricia from San Antonio
Their voices will be heard thanks to this hit CD........2005-12-05
Spiritual rock! Great guitar work, lyrics, and messages. Every song is a potential chart topper. "I Believe" will likely be popular in a lot of modern church youth groups. I expect to be hearing it Sunday mornings very soon.

Excellent CD of a musical, and fast delivery time.......2005-10-24
This is an ecxellent CD. Top shelf CD with great cast. This was exactly what we were looking for. Glad we spent the money, as it has helped us with a school production for 2006.
Thankyou for the prompt and undamaged delivery also. Well worth doing.
A recording that pales beside it's predecesser.......2005-09-22
Alright, this recording is of better sound quality than the original, but the actually singing simply pales beside the orginal. Sarah Jessica Parker sound like a rock next to Carrol Burnett. The rest of the cast is not too horrible though. The best songs are the chorus songs, with the exception Sensitivy.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-09
I really enjoy listening to this recording. I actually bought the CD because I had to audition for the part of Lady Larken for my middle school play and wanted to pick an audition song. Up 'til then, I had not even heard of this show, but I listened to this recording and fell in love with it. Sarah Jessica Parker is awesome, particularly in SHY and HAPPILY EVER AFTER. The only song that I don't care for is MAN TO MAN TALK, but all of the other tunes are catchy and fun to listen to. Buy this CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perfect.......2004-07-25
Though the show was met with negative reviews, and the original script should have been used, the music was kept intact, and made even better. Sarah Jessica Parker is a perfect Winnifred, and her takes on "Shy" and "Happily Ever After" are wonderful. There is no way to mess up the Mattress music, (although they managed to murder and butcher the script) so there is no way to do this badly. My only beef with this is that if you're a performer, and you get this one, you'll be lost in rehearsals. The 1959 recording is the one liscensed by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and it does not include "Goodnight Sweet Princess" which is really a shame, although every production I've been in has been allowed to perform the number, which really gives the actor playing Dauntless (me everytime I've done it) to show voice, rather than talk singing, like Man to Man Talk. Speaking of that number, it's the only song on here I don't like. If you want Mattress as a referece, buy the 1959 version, but this is perfect for everyone else. The orchestrations are dazzling, and the whole production sparkles.
Excellent.......2004-04-07
With gorgeous orchestrations, lovely voices, and Sarah Jessica Parker at her very best, this recording far outshines the original. The entire score is featured here, all done tastefully. It is also worth mentioning that some of the lyrics and orchestrations were updated and sound more contemporary giving the show a greater Broadway feel. Don't waste any more time and BUY this CD. You won't be sorry.
