This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great kids cd!!.......2007-03-24

My daughter absolutely loves this cd. I could not find it anywhere until i looked on amazon, so thank you amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

5 out of 5 stars Her favorite gift..........2006-12-23

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Little Soundtrack.......2006-08-29

This is a great soundtrack from a variety of different artists. If your child loved the movie you will absolutely love this CD!!!

The album cover of this self-titled release depicts the members of Slipknot in creepy masks, the dark image confirmed by the presence of a parental advisory sticker. Inside, foul language and subversive lyrics complete the picture. Yet Slipknot are no Insane Clown Posse, using hyperbole to mask a lack of talent. Slipknot's sound, while indebted to the likes of Korn, is more aggressive and creative. Indeed, it's a closer kin to Slayer and death metal, yet listenable and surprisingly melodic. The common denominator among Slipknot and the late '90s crop of neo-metal-rap bands is producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit), who discovered the Iowa-bred Slipknot and signed them to his label, I Am Records. His stellar production, melded with wonderfully creepy percussive elements, a sampler, a DJ, metallic-grind guitars, and singer Corey Taylor's immense passion and wide melodic range, makes Slipknot immensely listenable. Slipknot isn't for everyone, but they provide a visceral and satisfying ride for fans of the hard stuff. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Slipknot CD.......2007-07-11

I'm tellin' ya this is one of the greatest true metal bands you will find, next to Sevendust. My favorites on this are Surfacing, Wait and Bleed, Spit it Out, (sic), Eyeless, and Purity. In that order. I dont think there is much else to say, Just look at the average reviews, over 1,000 and its still above a 4 star rating.

So if you like Korn, Disturbed, Sevendust, Static-X, Rob Zombie, or Tool I dont see any reason at all you would not like this CD..

5 out of 5 stars Listen to me only!.......2007-04-30

I am a newbie to metal, but it didn't take long for me to become severely into it. I got this cd sent for christmas, and at first only liked a few songs (eyeless and surfacing were the only ones i liked). But i listened to it more and changed my favourites and am constantly headbanging. Just a quick review of all the tracks individually:

1. 742617000027: (0:35) I dont like this track much at all. All it succeeds in doing is sound weird. 1/10

2. (Sic): (3:19) This song is about a war but the law says it isnt. Great headbanging and great lyrics, and the instruments all blend in well. 9/10

3. Eyeless: (3:56) This track is one of the longer ones on the album, and indeed a good one. Listen to it and youll probably play it at least twice before moving on to track 4. 9/10

4. Wait and Bleed: (2:27) This is indeed a Slipknot Classic and the only song which actually has singing for most of the way through. It isnt particularly good to headbang to, but it still sounds good and everyone likes it. 9.5/10

5. Surfacing: (3:37) Known by maggots as the inernational f***ing anthem, this song is often played as the last song in concerts. It isnt as popular as wait and bleed, but i actually prefer this track. THree cheers for slipknot! One, two, THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/10

6. Spit it out: (2:39) My favourite track on the album, which is such a shame as it doesnt last long at all. The intro will get you headbanging instantly, and the chorus is loud enough to shake a whole hallway! It talks about someone who argues in court and in the end, the last verse tells him that the verdict is still guilty. But it is just awesome! 10.5/10

7. Tattered and torn: (2:53) This track is even worse than a chav song and thats all i have to say. 3/10

8. Me inside: (2:39) This track is also boring, but far better then Tattered and torn. The chorus is good, and therefore i rate it an extra 2 marks. 7/10

9. Liberate: (3:06) This is a song which i know all the words to, but do not understand what it is about. It has a very strong intro and chorus, and the verses are slightly weaker than the rest, but still good. Unfortunately the bit after verse 2 is the bit i dont like and i only rate it 9.5/10. 9.5/10. Take that bit out and i would give it 10.5.

10. Prosthetics: (4:58) This song is catchy in the choruses and i enjoy listening to those bits, but i dont like the rest of it. Be careful: The song has 3 choruses:

1: Mine! Ah f***ing you will be mine!

2: Damn it man i knew it was a mistake!

3: What the f*** is different?

Overall the track is good and so i rate it 9/10.

11: No Life: (2:47) This track gets annoying eventually but while it is opening up during the first minute, the song is very good. 8/10

12: Diluted: (3:22) A song i think little about, but i do like the way god is accused (I worship Satan), and god curses somebody who accordingly did nothing wrong. 8/10

13: Only One: (2:26) This track is very fierce and merciless, and i dont understand the track but nonetheless i like it. 9/10.

14: Scissors: This song doesnt interest me that much and so i dont have very much to say really. 5/10

15: Eeyore: The bonus track isnt as good as we could have hoped for, but it is better than any of the songs given under 8/10 so i give this song 8/10. Do not miss this track (it plays automatically 4 minutes after the end of scissors)!

1 out of 5 stars Unusually bad Nu-Metal.......2007-03-25

Alright, I'm NOT a kid. I'm just dont feel like registering just to write a review.
Ok, Slipknot is NOT metal, let alone extreme metal. In fact, they are about as metal as The Click Five (I take that back; the Click Five is more metal than this band). Corey Taylor's vocals are weak and off-key, and the guitars are simply downtuned noise, not to mention very simple from a technical standpoint(All they do is alternate between a few one-fingered power chords). The bass is nonexistant, and Joey's drumming is sloppy. For all the praise he gets, guys like David Husvik (Extol) and Casey Grillo (Kamelot) could totally OWN him.
I can deal with sub-par lyrics as long as the music is good, but if it sucks, then I bash the lyrics too. Corey's lyrics are immature, and could have been written by a ten year old who is angry because his mom would'nt let him buy those ridiculous Hot Topic pants with all the rings and chains. Basically, all he sings about is murder and misanthropic hatred (ooh, nu-metal kids. I used a big word). They probably stem from something so minor as being picked on occasionally in school, and now he gets to have his little temper-tantrum.
I wont make fun of the fact that they have nine members (Therion happens to have eight), but the instrumentation is horrible. Trash cans and turntables? Give me a break. These illiterate apes have no business playing musical instruments, and nobody who likes actual music should have to listen to their "wall of noise" sound or insipid, violent, misogynistic lyrics.
Heres to hoping they split up soon. For real talent check out Extol, Dragonforce, Kamelot, Virgin Black, Chthonic, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Narnia, Evergrey, Tristania, Freedom Call, or pretty much anything that is Death, Black, Gothic, Thrash, or Power metal.

5 out of 5 stars Slip into this little slice of heaven--and live!.......2007-04-08

I heard the first track (Children of December) on the radio one morning, and later that day I bought the CD--an unusual action for me. But the song sounded that good.

Then I gave the rest a listen. My reaction: Okay. That was after my first listen. Now, over 100 listens later, I am beginning to understand this album. And what I understand thus far is that these 11 songs have changed me. I am not sure how or why, but I am no longer satisfied by any of the music that I was satisfied with before, or that is being produced/played these days. And realizing this truth has frustrated me.

Where's the other good music?!

In Eisenhower, The Slip have produced a work that is reminiscent of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Wilco, The Beatles, etc. It is surely a concept album, but what exactly the concept is eludes me--and I am glad. This gives me room to imagine and tack my own meaning to the songs.

The stand-out songs? I like the melancolia I find in Paper Birds--a song that also, in its drawnout, sing-along finish, serves to connect all the other songs on the album (Paper Birds is the 11th song)--and in Suffocation Keep; I like The Soft Machine and Mothwing Bite; I like Airplane/Primitive. But the jams, the 3 guys playing off each other, is just so fine! Here these guys have perfected their jazz/rock/acoustic fusion jam like never before.

Have I said too much? No. Take a listen, and then keep listening. Their sound grows, until you will be anxiously awaiting their next release.

About their earlier efforts: they don't compare to Eisenhower. The earlier efforts definitely have their moments, but the boys (3 brothers, 2 blood) have grown up musically, so don't wait--pick up a copy of Eisenhower today...and tell a friend to do the same.

2 out of 5 stars The Slip?.......2007-03-23

I bought this CD for the first 2 songs in hopes the rest of the CD would be equally as good. It's not. After repeated listening, the CD runs out of steam quickly.

3 out of 5 stars You might like it........2007-03-22

I like the first 2 songs the rest is a little too mellow for me but I am still listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but..........2007-03-18

In my opinion, with the exception of Life in Disguise, the album goes downhill after First Panda in Space. Paper Birds is an incredible weak, in my opinion.

But fortunately, Children of December, Even Rats, If One Of Us Should Fall, Airplane/Primitive, and Suffocation Keep, and Life in Disguise are all so brilliant that they make up for it completely.

4.5 stars

4 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2007-03-12

I actually bought this as a present for my boyfriend. He had heard the first song on Guitar Hero and wanted the CD. He was thoroughly happy with the gift and I can't help but say that I enjoy the music too. It's not a hard rock but most of the songs really follow the flow of "Even Rats"...if you like that song....you'll probably like the rest.

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

I don't want to talk bad about this great rock band, I don't want to talk about Steve Vai in this record, but I want to say one thing, this is not the real sound of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of STEVE VAI, but the song judgement day is a great song, is like kashmir of led zeppelin!

3 out of 5 stars Slip of the Tongue = a mixed bag of snakes.......2007-01-10

The knives were out for this one. To tell the truth, no matter what this sounded like it was going to cop a hammering given the attitude of certain elements of the hard rock press - especially in the UK. Additional to this was the fact that Steve Vai had been drafted in on guitar for a very hefty fee and there were justified concerns his playing style was totally unsuited to Whitesnake. Not to mention that the cover artwork was similar to that of the 1987 album (a ruse repeated for the '94 Greatest Hits) and this smacked a little of desperation.

So at first glance it's a case of low expectations despite the hope for another great disc as per 1987. And once you get to the music it's pretty clear that this is a hit and miss selection of songs. No complaints with the title track or the follow up cut Cheap an' Nasty. Or the remake of Fool For Your Loving which some felt was sacrilegious in some way. But stuff 'em! Now Your Gone is a decent enough ballad and Vai gets to flex his guitar in all sorts of unnatural ways in Kittens Got Claws but things get a little sketchy as the album moves on. It's not that Slow Poke Music or Judgement Day (an attempt to write another Still of the Night) are poor, it's just that they aren't great. And the more shiny hollow - or gutless, take your pick - production job doesn't help given the awesome power in the recording of 1987 which had more grit and fibre in one song than any three or four of the tracks on display here.

Not to mention that while he's a great guitarist, Vai proved the critics right by not really fitting the more bluesy hard rock mould of the 'snake. Not his fault, the guy is insanely talented in my opinion, but his style just isn't right for these songs. Though at least his inclusion did mean that the 'snake boasted (count 'em) two guitar gods for the tour. Which for some six string aficianados probably made it worthwhile buying a concert ticket regardless of whether they liked the album or not.

The real deal? Not as good as 1987 but few albums are. Some good songs are here but not as well produced and lacking the feel of a Whitesnake record, sounding like this was a job for all involved as there is just no feel on this album at all.

I have worn out several of these over the years. It is just that Good if you are into Hair Metal.

5 out of 5 stars Steve vai rules.......2006-03-24

Whitesnake suck as a band every cd complete rubbish the only thing making this one great and i mean great is Steve Vai(GOD) on the guitar he blows everyone else in the band away, so if you must buy a whitesnake cd make it this one and then look into Steve Vai's work as its the best you will hear ever

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music for rockers!.......2006-03-20

This CD is great. It has some really hooky tunes and the guitar playing by Steve Vai is phenomenal. I don't know why people give Steve Vai so much criticism for this album as I really do think his playing brings alot of excitement to the Whitesnake sound. Coverdale's vocal melodies are really strong too. Compared to Whitesnake's legendary 1987 album with John Sykes on guitar (which I also love), the sound of this album is a bit more commercial and produced. Personally I think it was a positive move even though most Whitesnake fans probably don't agree.

This is the crux of the Flag. Their third album of 1984, it followed the schizophrenic Family Man, which found the band playing bone- crushing instrumentals on one side while Henry Rollins ranted spoken-word on the other. Slip put things back together with a hammer--with new bassist Kira Roessler striking the blow. This is music of real tension, and Rollins challenges guitarist Greg Ginn for the reins all the way through. His throat-ripping rasp may win out on "Wound Up," but Ginn is simply ferocious on "Black Coffee" and "My Ghetto." Suzanne Gardner's hilarious yet sexy cooings on the title track win her the "Donna Summer of Punk" Award. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Black Flag - 'Slip It In' (SST).......2007-05-16

I've never been the biggest fan of hardcore, but I do know a great record when I hear it. 'Slip It In' is the band's third effort that was originally released in 1984. Tunes I found myself playing a lot off here were the title track "Slip It In", the in-your-ugly-*ss-mug "Black Coffee", "Rat's Eyes", "The Bars" and the body slammin' classic "My Ghetto". This is the sort of music that lures you to drive around at 3am and smash up every mail box (the ones they have by the end of the driveway) within a two mile radius. Line-up: Henry Rollins-vocals, Greg Ginn-guitar, Kira Roessler-bass and Bill Stevenson-drums. Should appeal to most fans of Misfits, the Germs, Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys. Believe I saw guitarist Greg Ginn's post-Black Flag trio, Gone play an actual in-store appearance. Wasn't just a three song mini-set, it was like a 45 minute show that had nearby tenants calling the police. You KNOW you've had a great time when that happens. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as their earlier stuff.......2006-10-27

its not bad, and it certainly has a few really good songs (the title track comes to mind), but this was the begining of the end for Black Flag, and it really shows. This is the last album of theirs I would reccommend anyone buy, and its really only for people who are already big fans. If you aren't a big fan, pick up "Damedged" or "The First four years" instead.

5 out of 5 stars How can people bag on this album? My personal favorite 'Flag LP.......2006-01-03

Slip It In.

Ok, I'll admit something here. I'm perplexed how people can bash on this Flag record. Out of all the Flag albums I've heard and had at various times this is the one I come back to the most.

I recently encoded to WAV my vinyl copy I bought at Tower Records in Bellevue, WA in 1986 (oh the memories). I listened to the whole damn thing tonight while working out. I have to give it rave reviews. This album still rocks. Its almost as some other reviewers have said a mix of punk, hardcore and maybe a skosh of metal in there. I love the energy, the attitude and swagger. ( Its also a great album to do cardio to, but thats another subject.)

I think the flow of the record is great. The first three songs bust out the gate and don't slow down till Rat's Eyes. Then a brief reprieve and off you go again.

Favorite Tracks:
Black Coffee
You Think You're Evil
Obliteration (interesting song progression)
Slip It In
The Bars

This is a long way removed from Damaged, which is great on its own. My War I can't get into as much, sludgey and the material isn't as ferocious. Plus, I don't think that album flows as well and the band doesn't seem to being into it as much.

Seems there are factions of fans who like specific angles of 'Flag. Chalk me up as one who thinks Slip It In is one of thier top tier albums. Fusing punk, hardcore, 70s hard rock and charging hard makes it thier most complete album. It does what few artists dare to do - fuse genres. It works brilliantly here.

Would recommend this and Damaged as a introduction to 'Flag.

Fun sidenote to this LP - Etched in the vinyl after the last song on each side is a message:
S1: "Only The Steaming Liquid of Caffeine... Stark ... Starker"
S2: "And Walked Out Into the Bright Light without Sunglasses"

I don't know if the CD has this. Thought I'd throw that one out there.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me want to BEAT MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL!!.......2005-12-10

I share a birth year, 1961, with Henry Rollins (as well as Doug Coupland, author of Generation X, for what it's worth; I once met Coupland, mentioned this fact to him, and had him say that he hoped some day to meet Rollins - I wonder if he ever did?). So, I have long related to Rollins as a member of my generation, more so than I might relate to Pete Townsend or Ray Davies (as much as I love them). Anyway, what's not to like about Black Flag? Here, they are in fine form, particularly on the title track, and other speedier tunes at the beginning of the record, songs like Black Coffee and Wound Up. Kira, the new bass player, does a masterful job and contributes well. Listening to the latter of these songs, Wound Up, you can't help but identify with Henry's deep, raw angst. When he let's out his id, it's cathartic for me as the listener, too.

This is great music for whenever you are feeling pissed off about something, though perhaps, after a while, you should take it off and put something else on. Otherwise, you may need to go beat your head against the wall, for tension release, as this band sang elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, alienated..........2005-09-29

"Slip it In" was an important album for me. In 1984 I sat on my friend's front lawn in Cowtown, California blasting this album from a tape deck. Needless to say the neighbors called the police who showed up and gave us a stern dressing down for playing punk rock music. Now, 21 years later I listen with the same enthusiasm I had all those years ago. Ginn's guitar work is just amazing. The solos are obviously based on his listening knowledge of free jazz, blues, and 70s hard rock. They are so skewed, so unique, that on every listen I strain to get my head around that flurry of discordant notes. Rollins is in top form, especially on "Black Coffee" (my fave) and "Wound Up." Stevenson's and Kira's rhythm section works as a heavy, driving anchor to Ginn's spasmodic playing and Rollin's shrieks of pain, alienation, and sexual darkness. This is a great album. I like everything Black Flag recorded up to this album. Keith Morris, Chavo, and Dez-era Flag cannot be ignored as well.

For those who eschew the swinging teenage elbows of an actual Phish concert, this 1997 Hamburg date offers a comprehensive account of the quartet's breadth. Talking Heads' "Cities" is a perfect match for their brand of quirky funk. ZZ Top's "Jesus Just Left Chicago" receives a gritty 13-minute reading with ample room for Page McConnell's blues-heavy piano. Guitarist Trey Anastasio alternates between quiet, emotive passages and searing power licks. There's also an a cappella version of the ragtime chestnut "Hello My Baby." Their patented blend of nonsensical lyrics and intense jams is represented by "Weigh" ("I'd like to cut your head off, so I can weigh it... Five pounds? Six pounds?") and by unrecorded fan favorites including "Mike's Song" and "Weekapaug Groove." --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2006-01-07

I just got this CD, and maybe I'll hear some incredible things after a few more listens, but so far it doesn't seem like their best work. Maybe it's just me, but the vocals sound alittle off --something seems different to me -- as compared to their other live stuff. The song selection is decent, especially Wolfman's Brother and Mike's Song, but it could better. Hampton Comes Alive and A Live One are deffinetly stronger albums with better songs.

4 out of 5 stars listen to it man.......2004-04-12

song by song overview because it sounds lame to tell someone hey this sucks or i love this
cities - funny, groovy and has a cool wah rythym to it good song to chill to and 'get some thinking done'
wolfman - awesome version of the song possibly the best because unlike hoist its a little more flowing and when it goes 'broth-er' with the guitar riff after it, i get goose bumps
jesus/chicago - and after a long slow paced jam with distintive bass and wah guitar we find our selves at a beat-slow slow-beat blues cover of jesus left chicago with a sweet solo in the midst of it
weigh - an alright song not my favorite but, give it credit for being mike's highlight on the album, not to much improv here but it does give a nice interlude to mikes' song and this song is really, i guess you could say, overall, phishy
mike's song - wow best part of the cd maybe, take mike's song and add a out of control sweet tension build up,' the end theme ', 'careful with that axe screams' and finish with a factory jam until we get to a 'and he walked down the hall'(morrison) to the next ...
lawn boy - good song with some nice page vocals and a smoothe bass riff by mike, also some nice feed back
weekapog groove - cool main riff with more 'the end' referencing, it's a groove, a monster groove, so don't think to hard just appreciate it all at once as a whole flowing enima, can you dig?
hello my baby - it's cute and funny but also quiet and that ticks me off just a wee bit, i have to turn up my stereo to hear the individual words, this track closes the album in a sense and prepares the listeners for a climax on taste
taste - great closer, if it weren't for this song i wouldn't probably be writing this review and screaming to all to buy it and listen your ears off and don't be to quick to judge

overall awesome, only four stars because of hello my baby is quiet and weigh is not the greatest song inmy opinion, but hey who am i, if you like phish and want to know what live phish is all about or just like jam bands or just like music get it and embrace it

4 out of 5 stars Give it up for the covers..........2004-01-21

Phish is an amazing band, no question. This release is one I keep coming back to for "Taste," the final track on the disc, and the two covers, "Cities" and "Jesus Left Chicago". The latter is one of my favorite tracks on any album, period. It shows Phish tackling a genre they usually don't approach so directly- the blues- with a style and grace that almost convinces me they are a blues-rock band masquerading as a prog-funk outfit. I am amazed that Trey can nail that sound so well, when he seems to practice it so rarely. It speaks volumes for the versatility of Trey and the band as a whole. The rest- good- but "A Live One" is better overall as it is "edgier" and sounds more fresh. Still, you can't go wrong here.

4 out of 5 stars It's good but prehaps a bit overated........2002-10-19

I have been a phish head for about 3 years now, and I finally bought this one used a few weeks ago. My two friends told me it was their favorite Phish cd. I love Phish's live stuff, don't get me wrong, but while this is a nice one to have, it doesn't feel like the best live Phish I'd ever heard. Honestly, it seems a little weak, and I can't figure out why. I really like Mikes groove, and it is a good Mike's groove but it feels like it needs more. I just can't put a finger on it. This is a good CD to have and I do listen to it offten but I never am quite satisfied with it. It just needs more. It feels like the band was playing well but didn't have a ton of energy.

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype!.......2002-04-05

Phish is one of the most overrated bands ever, their original songs lyrics are usually really dumb inside jokes that you won't get unless you have wasted a large amount of your time listening to these guys. The only good parts are when Trey and Page rock out hard on other peoples songs (Jesus Left Chicago, the Keith Richards' riff from Can you hear me knockin, and Doors the end rift with Careful with that Axe from Floyd). The bottom line-this is still better than 99% of commercial music and there is some virtuoso playing to be heard here but spend your money on some Hendrix, Galatic or the Doors instead.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-04-17

This band came out of the hardcore scene of the late 80s that gave us Shelter, Texas is the Reason and others. Quicksand were a whole lot better though. Slower paced with a heavy bass line, dont know why but they remind me so much of Led Zepp how this band never got a wider audience is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-04-01

Even 13 years later, this album still rocks. It's one of those rare masterpieces where EVERY track rocks. A must for any collector of heavy, edgy, early 90's post-hair-band metal. Truly, every song is awesome. Baphomet is one of the scariest songs I've heard. Still gives me chills - and it's the 10th track!

5 out of 5 stars Better and more urgent by the year- DESERT ISLAND 20.......2006-02-23

Every 6 months or so I just HAVE to put this on again. All of todays heavies owe so much to the punch, structure, and succinctness of the crossover perfected here. Formed out of the ashes of Gorilla Biscuits (from Minneapolis), who were pretty lean and fast as a punk outfit- they shone well on the debut ep.

Then wrote their 'genius' effort here, slowing the focus of punk into sheer emotional power , with each song shining warmly like old friends in battered leather jackets smiling broadly to reveal teeth lost to loud music.

I was soooo lucky to catch them in Milwaukee, touring with Deftones in an effort to regroup. I had seen them once before, but I thought they were long gone. Playing a huge old Eagle's Club ballroom-THEY WERE SO MIGHTY, it was like a drug. The kids were drop jawed wondering where the rock roundhouses were coming from, seamlessly running through this whole album and a few from 'compression'. I risked life and limb to toss the kids around a bit for old times sake.

And then they were gone.

5 out of 5 stars Full-Length Debut From Quicksand Metallic And Raw...4.5 stars..........2005-12-15

Quicksand formed in New York in the late 80s, and while they released a minor self-titled ep early on, it was this early 90s debut that turned the band onto the metal/punk scene. While many would want to throw Quicksand into the punk-rock scene, they actually lean more towards metal with some hints of punk escapism thrown in. They lean more towards hard guitars and pummeling, crushing rhythms, while vocalist/guitarist Walter Schreifels has enough angst in his voice to fit in nicely. And other band members, Tom Capone-guitar, Sergio Vega-bass,and Alan Cage-drums, create dense walls of noise. Tracks like the hard-hitting "Dine Alone" and the dense metal of "Fazer" showcase Quicksand's more abrasive side. "Omission", from the band's debut self-titled ep, was a hint of the metallic sound that dominates this and the band's last album, the well-crafted frenzy of MANIC COMPRESSION. Elsewhere, "Head To Wall" pummels the listener, and "Lie and Wait" is another fist-pumping anthem.

If you're looking for a dose of good metallic rock, then SLIP and MANIC COMPRESSION should satisfy any metal fan. Creating some of the most influential music during that time, Quicksand sadly went their separate ways after a brief reunion in the late 90s. But with this album, Quicksand most definitely created some smart and well-crafted rock-metal.

5 out of 5 stars Helmet + Fugazi= Quicksand.......2005-11-14

Amazing band. I honestly can't stand all the garbage that constitutes as "post-hardcore" or "emo" these days. Bands like Thursday, Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday(pretty much any band with "day" in the title) cannot and will not ever hold to Quicksand. On this cd you won't hear wussy guitars and whining vocals screaming about ex-girlfriends. Instead, you'll be treated to strong and assertive vocals and quality songwriting. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars You will never forget this album.......2007-05-25

This album has haunted my soul since I first heard it in 1999. It's a spiritual journey and a musical masterpiece disguised as a technical death metal album. Powerful lyrics, rhythm, techniques, time signatures, and transitions in every song.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tech-Death Album in Recent Memory.......2007-04-17

I knew this album would be something unusual just because of the stellar reviews it has accumulated, but I really didn't expect anything amazing. I expected another death metal band just barley emerging out of the general rehashed blandness of the genre. I couldn't have been more wrong.

'Obscura' is a completely original and demonic effort from the tech-death scene. You might think to yourself that even tech-death is getting maybe a little stale, lacking anything that Cryptopsy or Suffocation hasn't done already. This belief would be well warranted, but nonetheless, inaccurate thanks to 'Obscura'. This slab of demonic dissonace is even unique in the world of tech-death. I have yet to hear an death metal album as completely absorbing as this one is. Several times I have popped 'Obscura' into my player hoping to only listen to maybe a track or two, and realizing later that I had just listened to the whole album. Yes, it is THAT gripping.

All the usual stuff is here, the abrupt time changes, the staggering drum beats, and the relentless, dischordant madness, but what puts this album head and shoulders above the rest is the fact that it is actuall very well written. Everything contributes to the awesome atmosphere that 'Obscura' achieves, and everything is perfectly timed, avoiding repetiveness. Every riff from start to finish is just so down-right demented and ugly that I can not help listening to this constantly, even almost a month after I purchased it.

If you are looking for something wickedly original and entertaining, then click purchase immediately. A wonderful album even surpassing the greatness of Cryptopsy's 'None So Vile'. An absorbing and relentless masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Gorguts Develop A Unique Sound Here.......2007-02-16

I can see why "Obscura" is Gorguts' most well-known album now as I finally give the whole album a listen. This album marks not only a change of sound for the band, but also crafted something unique and, well, strange. This marked the 2nd stage of Gorguts. No longer were they a vintage death metal band in the vein of Pestilence, Obituary, Suffocation, etc., but they have then become a genre-defying band with this masterpiece we call "Obscura". Every instrument is well played here. The guitars are technical and perfected well, the bass lines are excellent, drumming is superb, and Luc Lemay screams his lungs out while performing his vocal duties here. Just listen to one song to get the idea, from the beginning title track, "Obscura", to the instrumental closer, "Sweet Silence", and it will blow your mind.

Fans of modern technical bands like Psyopus, Ion Dissonance, Necrophagist, Gorod, etc. need to check this out. And even though Gorguts is no more, check out the continuation Luc and guitarist Steeve Hurdle have made with Ion Dissonance and Augury members called Negativa, which has a sound similar to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Tech-Death meets Avant-Garde.......2007-01-04

I can't get enough of this album, being that Gorguts are one of my favorite bands. I do have to admit one thing, however. This CD can be a bit tough to get into, since many of the riffs, solos, and scales can be difficult to pick up, just because there's so many of them. The avant-garde influence can give people the idea that this album is just random noise. But this is no Dillinger Escape Plan folks. You just have to listen carefully, and you'll eventually pick up on the different styles of music being used here. I admit, it took me more than one listen to get into this album, but when I started picking up everything, It grew on me, and now I love it. Contrary to what most people think, I don't really hear much Cryptopsy in this CD, other than maybe the vocals. Gorguts are more guitar-oriented, while Cryptopsy focuses more on their goldy drummer Flo. My two favorite tracks are "The Sombre Art of Ecstacy" and "Illuminatus". It'll take some time, but this CD can really twist your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Intensity enthroned..........2006-12-21

I don't really know where to start with this album.

First and foremost, I want to say that in the case of Gorguts, the answer to 'What's in a name?' is - 'absolutely nothing'. Unless you're referring to the name of the album, in which case - 'absolutely everything'.

It's death metal.. sort of. It's brutal, unrelenting, unfriendly, and extreme. In fact, I'm pretty sure this goes beyond extreme. However, it's also so unorthodox, strange, unique, and chaotic that it would make more sense to look at it as an extremely heavy form of experimental free jazz than it would to look at it as another member among the ranks of conventional death metal albums that exist out there (which coincidentally include Gorguts' other albums).

Generally speaking, I'm not a stranger to extreme and technical metal, but I had trouble figuring out what kind of audience, exactly, this creation was intended for. It's far too harsh to attract those who are only familiar with heavy music in a general sense, yet at the same time it's so hard to associate anything on this album with any form of established metal that even die-hard metalheads would probably keep their distance. Obscura destroys any and all metal clichés that I can think of.. everything is pushed to the limits - the brutality, the technicality, the construction (and deconstruction) of highly discordant progressions.. it all comes together to form some kind of otherworldly chaos fusion theory.

The guitars emit some seriously low, highly dissonant tones in obfuscated patterns that may sometimes resemble something you might be able to call a riff.. and when the riffs do come down, they could probably pass for the soundtrack to oblivion. The guitars in general produce some downright twisted, alien, and atonal sounds. The morphing metarhythms produced by the drummer sort of wander around on their own plane of existence, ignoring any sense of a natural tempo.. though calling anything on Obscura "natural" is pushing it. Everything is oh so deliberate. Dizzyingly odd intervals, extremely irregular sort-of-there-but-not-really beats, constantly shifting meters, a strange sense of counterpoint, and a destructive lack of harmony. On top of that, the vocals sound like somebody is literally tearing their mind into pieces in front of the microphone.. probably the most violent, agonizing, and painful vocals I've ever heard. It's hard to not wonder just what in the world is going on as you listen to this for the first time. Are these guys insane? You'll probably think so your first time through the album (and depending on your level of exposure and tolerance for music like this, perhaps your second time through as well, and your third, and fourth, and.. well, assuming you even get that far).

That's the thing, though.. I don't believe music like "this" exists outside of Obscura. At least, I've never heard it. This is completely new and unique to me. While there are many avant-garde metal bands out there who create schizophrenic genre trips with elaborate arrangements, all of them, well.. to be straightforward.. they all seem very gimmicky and trivial when compared to the enigmatic intensity of Obscura.

Another nice thing about this album is that, unlike many tech/death albums, this one isn't 30 minutes long. It's a bit over an hour, which could be a blessing or a curse, depending on how you look at it. Also, despite the band's name, they don't have much to do with either gore or guts. In fact, their lyrics - while not wrapped in indecipherable poetry - are generally intelligent.

The worst thing about this album is the way it makes you look at everything else. Obscura is one of those albums that redefines the way a fundamental aspect of music works, it's an album that redefines and warps your very conception of the art form. In fact, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who wouldn't even call this music, but an hour of random noises.. though I personally think that an hour of random noises would sound more natural and pleasing than the surreal intensity that constitutes this album. It makes everything else looks overly tame, and all that stuff that you thought was so great and esoteric seems.. normal.

Writing this review was actually sort of an odd undertaking, since there's absolutely nothing out there to draw comparisons to (oddly enough, the most common line that I have seen drawn from this album is to Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica"). None of the tech, death, or avant-garde that I have heard could have prepared me for this. Obscura defies the very genre it embodies, while at the same time bending it to its own twisted will.

I'll finish by saying that anybody who's into death metal should listen to this album at least once, if not own it. Everybody else, well.. open your mind, fasten your seatbelt, and be prepared for some of the strangest, deepest, and most difficult music you will ever hear.

..

On a more amusing note, I read a comment on another site claiming that this album sounds like a bunch of guys throwing their instruments down a staircase and recording it. Though in some indirect way that may be an accurate summary, all I can say is that despite what it sounds like, it is still music, and upon repeated listens the jarring contradiction of it all should begin to make sense.. no matter how ugly it may seem at first (and ugly it is).

Beware of the initial "What the f**k is happening to my brain!?" feeling this album will, without fail, induce.
