Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28

there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.

included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.

they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).

**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

Incredible Live Record.......2004-03-01

Savatage has put out one of the best live records I have ever heard. It hightlights the glory days of Savatage when Jon and Chris Oliva were the frontmen of this great band. My favorite songs on the recording are Dungeons are Calling and Sirens. They absolutely blew me away and are much better than the album versions. Every song is a jem and I could never get tired of this record. Turn your stereo up and prepare to rocked!

[....] This is a good overview, mostly of the "pre-progressive" era of Savatage, although there is some Gutter Ballet material as well. But this is definitely harder edged, more '80's metal Savatage.

The announced purpose of this album is to commemorate Criss Oliva's life and performance with the band. And he is, indeed, something special to listen to on this album. Excellent guitar.

This really isn't "Essential" by any means. If you're a Savatage fan of the progressive era (like me), I'd suggest getting the '90's and '00's output first and then check this out to see if you like the earlier material as well.

BTW, do check out Savatage live. They're terrific!

I had never heard of savatage prior to arriving at amazon.com I cant thank amazon enough for having this website and the hundreds of other reviews that I have read. this was my first Savatage cd, simply put this cd is awesome, i went back and read other reviews on the other savatage cd's and now I own 7 more cd from Savatage and when i get some more money plan on purchasing more. Savatage is now one of my favorite bands alongside the likes of Iced Earth, Armored Saint, Virgin Steele and many many more... If you have never listend to savatage before there is no better place to start your collection then with this Cd, and then you will branch out and get the other cd's from savatage and learn to experience musical bliss from the unbelievable band.

"Ghosts of the Ruins" is great. It is the best live album I've heard since "Kiss Alive." If you like bands that perform a song live exactly as they did on the album you'll love "Ghosts of the Ruins." Finally, this album demonstrates what a great guitarist Chris Oliva was -- we lost a great one in '93.

This is THE BEST LIVE CD I have ever listened to. From start to finish, every second sends chills down your spin. All the classics of Savatage are collected on this gem. Of course, not all favourites are here. Otherwise you would need a box set :)

If you're like me, then you'll end up having a sore throat (try yelling like Jon Oliva and you'll know what I mean) and have a sore neck from heavy head banging.

The CD is ends with an acoustic track. A fitting tribute to one of my favourite guitarists, Criss Oliva.

This CD is must for all metal fans.

this live cd really shows Savatage as a band that can write excellent heavy metal songs and has the musical ability to put on a top notch live show. A must for fans of good quality metal music!
