5 out of 5 stars Wilmer and the Dukes.......2006-06-22

I think the CD is great - brings back a lot of memories. I got it on special order from Record Theatre, if anyone is looking for it. Wondering if anyone remembers seeing Wilmer at Gilligans in the '60's or early 70's. I know my older sisters saw the band at the Inferno in our area but I was too young to go there!

4 out of 5 stars The Inferno.......2003-07-19

My treasured Wilmer And The Dukes LP was dropped and broken long ago and so was my heart. Later a tape a friend made for me was also damaged. This CD will be protected like a mother hen would. Does anyone remember seeing Wilmer At "The Inferno" in Williamsville, NY? What a show. Remember "Reach Out?"

5 out of 5 stars Syracuse.......2003-05-22

Wilmer was the best. Nostalgia beyond belief. I bought the original 8 track in 1969 and loaned it to a friend who never returned it. I have waited over 30 years to relive the songs and good times.

5 out of 5 stars GOD BLESS WILMER AND THE DUKES.......2002-02-03

As a small boy in Geneva NY I had some of the best preformers and music around me and I never even knew it. I knew "The Duke" Mr. Gillotte very well through family members, friends and his Son. To me I always thought of Mr. Gillotte as my buddy's Dad...."The things you learn in life". I knew he was in a band, my Dad was too and he talked of how great The Dukes really were. I never really knew it myself until I grew up and left for the armed forces. Seven years later the realization set in. I was home for the holidays and heard the remastered cd.I was at the "club house" where my father Carmen, The Bruno, my brothers and friends hang out drink beer, eat sausage and peppers and sing their hearts out to The Dukes....note for note...word for word! I tried so hard to get the cd but none of the music stores I went to had any left, I was heart broken. Well then I got lucky and found it on line. There are no words to describe how much love and respect I have for this band and the music they preformed. The sound they had was amazing to me, Mr Gillotte's B-3 Organ claws right through the songs and ripppppppps your heart out! Not only did they play the songs better than the original rock groups that wrote the songs....they did it with a hell of a lot more heart and rock-n-roll soul! Even though I'm not home in good ol' G-town, I still have my Dukes cd to keep me company when I get home sick...... "I listen to it everyday".

4 out of 5 stars I was taken back to the 60's!.......1999-06-01

Every Saturday night Wilmer played at Club 86 in Geneva, NY. We wouldn't have missed it for anything! As it turned out, I married someone who used to see Wilmer play on Friday nights at Bristol Ski Lodge in Canandaigua. Those were fun days!

5 out of 5 stars Still Haymes magic.......2006-02-01

Recorded in intimate session with Loonis McGlohan trio (who also did arrangements) in 1978, this album still shows a great deal of magic in DH. True, his voice has some mileage & a little 'weathered' on the edges, but a good song choice mostly and very nice to hear him in this sort of setting. Very sympathetic and nice 'lightfingered' structure provided by the trio too. I think the somewhat 'simpler' approach is
handled well. Not a substitute for his '40's/early '50's work at all; but Dick still had it here-- & a nice complement to the earlier work.

5 out of 5 stars A Matter of Style CD.......2007-07-13

Russell Thompkins Jr. can sing so well! His solo CD shows how versatile he can be. Loved his version of April Fools (True Love Has Found Us) by Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis. Dionne Warwick (First), Russell Thompkins, Jr. (Better).

5 out of 5 stars A True Artist Who Stands the Test of Time.......2007-07-06

Russell Thompkins, Jr. brings to the table a rare, magical voice that stands the test of time. Is this his best material ever -- No. Is this nevertheless a superb CD with excellent songs -- Yes. He is true artist, and for his fans, this is a terrific CD. My fervent hope is that he records again and again.

2 out of 5 stars It takes more than a great voice to make a CD........2006-09-27

After having heard Russell Thompkins, Jr. sing as a New Stylistic in the PBS DVD, Soul Party Live," I got curious as to how his single CD sounded. Well, his voice is in top form, but this effort is very unmusical. It didn't take long for me to realize that the only instruments in this CD is a synthesizer, and drum machine. As such, the music sounds artificial and synthetic. Moreover, the material is simply lacking and is mediocre at best. His attempt to re-make the stellar hit, "People Make the World Go Round," is a disaster. This effort proved to me that you need more than a great voice to make a CD. You also need good material and real instruments like horns, violins, a real piano, drums and an orchestra if you can swing it. This is a far cry from the Philly days with backup bands like the legendary MFSB. While Russell still has potential, it doesn't come through here.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite male singer of all time........2006-08-24

An astonishing collection of ballads that would leave you wanting for more. His voice is so smooth and silky beautiful iam so in love with this album iam his greatest fan.A must have for any serious Russell Thomkins Jr fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD Wonderfull Ballads.......2004-09-30

I was so glad to find that a cd exist for Russell Thompkins Jr, and I must say the cd I bought is excellant. The songs are all true and soft. Russells voice and talent for good ballads has not dwindled one bit. With so much going on in the music industry today its great to see true singers still singing. Its been out for 2 years and I recommend it to others . Go Russell may u bless us with another cd or a re-union cd with The Stylistics. macqdor@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Christian Metal Album Ever.......2006-02-25

There is a certain magic about this album, something I hadn't completely realized until Spoken came out with its two more recent releases. Unfortunately few will ever know about this album since the label that produced it changed hands a few times and now Spoken doesn't even list it as one of its own on their webpage. This album is extremely emotionally charged, and like most great albums, the songs all fit into one another in a constant flow from start to finish. The lyrical content is almost completely "Christian" and you constantly get the feeling that you're witness to human travail as it sits in all its fragility in a call out to God. The production is what makes this album so unique. It has a feel to it like you are hearing it live right next to you and yet it is cleaner than a live album with no mistakes or unbalanced instrumentation. Just soul cutting crisp clean vocals and music that warm you up and make you feel right next to them. Several bands wallow in and out of "one hit" radio fame and albums that contain maybe one of two good songs. Spoken has taken that path with its newer releases, this album, however, is worth every cent you may spend on it and, whether Christian or not, holds its own as a truly in and of itself masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Raw, passionate & God-honoring hard rock to soothe your soul.......2004-10-26

If you're looking for a Christian hard rock CD that has emotional, prayerful lyrics, you have come to the right place. Spoken is an amazing band of guys who really want to serve God through their music. It is Spoken's honesty and openness about their faith in God that caused this spectacular independent release to become one of the best hard rock CD's ever.

Here's how I rank each song out of 10 (with 10 being the highest):
      This Path - 10
      Forevermore - 9.5
      David - 10
      Times Before - 8
      I Won't Lie Down - 8.5
      I Fall Short - 9
      A Question Alone - 9.5
The Way You Want Me to Be - 10
      Goodbye - 8.5
      Ember - 9
      In the Silence - 9.5

The CD starts off with Matt Baird's pulsating screams in the incredible opener, "This Path," which was a pretty big hit in Christian rock radio in 2001 and 2002. This song is a prayerful plea to God to be a comfort and guide through tough trials and tribulations. The song starts off like this: "Father God, help me. Guide me as I swim through this sea of failure. You comfort me. You carry me. You're the only one to get me through. Wherever you go I will follow. Though this road may be so hard that I lose my way, I still will follow you."

Next comes the even bigger hit, "Forevermore," another hard rocker that continues in the same type of lyrics. It is probably the most well known on this CD and it definitely delivers in all the right ways. It has already established itself as a classic Christian hard rock song of our generation. Although it does not have the widespread popularity it deserves, it has definitely made its mark in the minds of hardcore fans of the Christian hard rock genre. "David" is another powerful song in which Baird cries out "O'h God, let your Spirit fall on me, your perfect peace comes down and amazes me." "Times Before" is a little less on the pulsating screams, and has more singing. While it is my least favorite, it is still decent enough not to skip.

"I Won't Lie Down" & "A Question Alone" were also singles to Christian radio, with the latter becoming a decent hit, and for good reason as it is one of the best songs on the CD. "I Fall Short," is great melodic rocker that doesn't disappoint. "The Way You Want Me to Be, " a major highlight of the album, is an intense 7 minutes of reflection on God that ends in a brilliant chorus of praise. When Baird repeats the phrase "I lift my hands to God because he is worthy," and then breaks out into the chorus in the end of the song, it is definitely my favorite part of the CD. It hits me every time and I want to praise God every time I hear that phrase in the song. The song builds into a big climax of all out screams although it doesn't start off with screaming. Baird whispers the lyric and then sings it louder and louder until he screams it with all of his heart and soul.

"Goodbye" is a solid song. While it isn't the best the album has to offer, it is definitely not filler either. It has its moments. "Ember" is an amazing and beautiful instrumental guitar solo. It has the most chilling guitar riff I have ever heard. Overall, it ranks second only to P.O.D.'s "Eternal" (featuring Jason Truby & Phil Keaggy) in my book as my favorite instrumental song. Finally, "In the Silence" ends the album on a spectacular note, as it is one of the best songs. The album could not end in a better way, as Baird praises God with the magnificent soaring melody: "O'h how beautiful is your name." Finally, there is a reference to praising God in heaven: "They sing your name over and over again."

Spoken is simply unlike any other. Every song is a masterpiece in its own right. My top three personal favorites are "This Path," "David," & "The Way You Want Me to Be." But this is definitely the type of CD where everybody will have different favorites. The songs that I ranked 9 or above are the songs that I just can't stop listening to. I listen to them over and over again and never get tired of them (as with the whole CD). It was very hard to pick favorites among those songs. This CD just makes me want to find Spoken's two independent releases that came out before this one. You see the greatness of Spoken does not lie in any sound that any production company can generate; it lies in the passion that God put in these guys to create these exceptional songs. So if you are weary of buying this CD because of the small label and the lack of big production, don't be. This is must buy. Period.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smooth soul at it's finest.......1999-10-15

This is a great effort from The Softones. Often compared to The Stylistics, The Softones have a style that is truly ALL THEIR OWN. Turn the lights down low, cuddle up with your significant other, sip on your favorite beverage, and enjoy this CD. All tracks are great.
