Meshuggah's finest hour........2007-04-14

First of all, Drake "glassjawslipknot" is a moron. He thinks Meshuggah sucks and even calls them overrated but likes Tool (one of the most overrated bands ever), Seether, Cold, Slipknot, Breaking Benjamin, Atreyu, and other s***ty bands. What a loser.

Anyway, Meshuggah's "Destroy Erase Improve" is where everything unique to Meshuggah (ie. goofy guitar solos and inconsistent time changes) mesh perfectly, therefore, their best album. When this album is over, you'll be exhausted yet wanting more. Fredrik Thordendal is one of the most unique guitarists in the metal world, as his solos sound like messed up synths, and when combined with Tomas Haake's insane drumming, you've got a formual for nearly unmatched technical brutality. Just listen to classics like "Future Breed Machine" and "Soul Burn," and you'll know what I mean.

Witht the exceptions of "Acrid Placidity" and "Sublevels," the songs on DEI are intense with mellow moments, giving the listener variety. This is a metal album that all fans of technical metal must own. For other great Meshuggah albums, check out "Chaosphere" (which is second only to DEI), "Contradictions Collapse/None," and "Nothing." If any of you like jazz-fusion, please check out Fredrik's biggest influence Allan Holdsworth.

Like his predictable self, that pompous film-snob I Shalt Become is gonna post some stupid comment like "Arrg, Rage Against the Machine sucks" or "You have no neck." Bring it on, loser, the fact that you've been trolling me for about nine months (including the times on MySpace) makes you a pathetic s***bag in the eyes of rational people.

The Future of Metal.......2006-08-02

Destroy, Erase, Improve is one of Meshuggah's best albums and an excellent place to start for beginners (such as myself). The album perfectly demonstrates the band's unique style. In the world of Meshuggah, time signatures are almost never traditional (very bizarre as a matter of fact-forget 4/4), riffs are ultra-tight and choppy, vocals are relentlessly fierce and guitar solos are simply out of this world. The guitarist is undoubtedly the focus of this band, and is one of the best players to arise within the past 10-15 years. While his solos are indeed very unusual (yet appealing) for metal, I would advise checking out his stongest influence, contemporary jazz legend Alan Holdsworth. If you're looking for something metal that is beyond thrash yet certainly not mainstream, give Meshuggah a try, as they are certainly worth the experience.

A Great Listen.......2006-06-12

This is a very good album. Meshuggah is an incredibly talented band. This made me rethink what "heavy" meant to me. I didn't even know things THIS heavy existed. I know "Noise" bands like Cannibal Corpse are heavy, but THIS is the soundtrack to a riot. I love it. I've just recently discovered Meshuggah but damn, am I in to them. Starting Out with the Brain-blowing "Future Breed Machine," this juggernaut of an LP Ranks up there with my top albums of all time. Another unmistakable highlight of the album is the mighty "Inside What's Within Behind." It has a certain Pantera feel to it.
In conclusion, you may think you know heavy, but until you listen to Meshuggah, you are oblivious.

Absolutely Skull Pounding .......2006-06-09

Meshuggah are one of my all time favorite bands, and I love them. They are one of the best metal bands of all time, and they're also the best math metal band in my book. I bought "Destroy Erase Improve" a couple months back, and I really love it. Words just can not describe how insanely talented these guys truly are. Their sound is not only heavily skull pounding, but very technical, well complexed, and 100% original as well, and this album proves just that. This album has everything: fantastic songwriting, vicious sceaming vocals, gut punching guitar riffs, awesome solos, pulse pounding bass lines, hammering double bass drumming, what more do you need? Jens Kidman's screaming vocals are just vicious and rabid like. He screams, barks, and snarls like a rabid dog on steriods, he makes all those emo bands look like they're posing. Guitar duo Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom's 7 sting guitarwork is absolutely gut punching throughout. Thordendal's solos on here are very jazzy and alien sounding and very 100% original, and Hagstrom's rhythm work is very tight and heavy. Peter Nordin's bass lines are so heavy they just beat you to a bloody pulp. Tomas Haake's drumming on here is just phenomenal. His drum beats are like a jackhammer pounding away at your senses, and his double bass kicks make your bones rattle relentlessly. Every song on here is a winner, but my favorites are "Future Breed Machine" "Suffer In Truth" "Terminal Illusions", "Inside What's Within Behind" "Vanished" and "Soulburn".

Overall I highly recommend this album to any Meshuggah fan. So do yourself a favor, go out and buy this album now. I guarantee you'll love it. Meshuggah Rules!!

Heavy, smart, brutal and for Meshuggah, more accessible than later releases.......2006-05-18

Less chaotic and insane than their next album Chaosphere (the first album by Meshuggah I bought), faster and more varied than somewhat monochromatic Nothing and less ambitious than the I ep and their strange masterpiece Catch 33. Destroy Erase Improve is more accessible, though no less brutal. The songs have the patented Meshuggah polyrhythmic technicality but are less inhuman. In other words the songs are more straight forward in terms of groove, rhythm and are more directily emotional. So you can joyfully band your head while the band crushes your cranium in 17/8, 5/4 time. Destroy Erase Improve achieves a terrific brutal balance between extremely high musicianship, technical geekery and straight out stomping metal; the music has an experimental edge that doesn't detract from it's power. And powerful doesn't begin to describe the unrelenting assault that is Destroy Erase Improve. The one respite in the intensity is the quiet and darkly melodic instrumental Acrid Placidity. For those who love Fredrik Thordendal's guitar, the solos are much longer than on subsequent albums and just as oddly creative/creepy, a big bonus. Fantastic stuff. Lyrically, musically and emotionally Destroy Erase Improve is a great album that points to the direction Meshuggah would flesh out on later releases. An excellent album from one of the most original bands playing in metal today.

The Real Dokken!.......2006-01-04

Dokken finally picks up where they left off in 1988 after 2 modern sounding albums with George Lynch. This is an amazing album with plenty of heavier melodic songs. There are a few fillers but many classics. I think George Lynch is far better than Reb Beach however I'm VERY glad George left because otherwise we wouldn't have gotten another Dokken album with that classic Dokken sound. If you liked Dokken in the 1980's than you'll like this. This is 1980's Dokken in 1999 with the execption of a few songs. Reb does a great job on this album and has some great shredding solos.

1.Erase the Slate- 10/10 An excellent fast paced opener. A classic Dokken style song. This is a Tooth And Nail type song. The riff is excellent too. Don's vocals sound great. Reb's wah wah pedal fills are excellent too. The rythym section is tight too. The lyrics are great not your typical hair metal lyrics. The bridge sounds amazing and has a bit of power metal influences in it. Reb's shredding solo is excellent and it reminds me of Lynch's Tooth And Nail solo and it also has some Middle Eastern stuff thrown in. Overall a great song that sounds like 80's Dokken.

2.Change the World- 10/10 A great heavy melodic rocker. The opening riff is excellent and sounds like classic Dokken. The softer part is excellent too and Don's vocals really shine. When it gets heavier it again it reminds me of Into The Fire and those type of Dokken songs. If this song was released in the 80's than it would have been a hit. The melodic chorus is excellent too. The bridge and solo are excellent too. Probably my favorite song on the album. This song should be on any Dokken Best Of. Reb's second solo is better than his first too. Another instant classic with great lyrics.

3.Maddest Hatter- 8.5/10 The intro is kind of weird but the song itself is good. A mix of 80's Dokken and a tiny bit of Dysfunctial thrown in. The chorus is good but nothing special. Reb's solo is great and has a lot of pinch harmonics, dives and shredding lines. Good but not a classic.

4.Drown- 7.5/10 The song is a good heavy rocker with good vocals and a cool riff. The chorus is good too. Reb's solo is good too. A good song overall but nothing great. Not that classic Dokken sound that the first 2 songs had and that Maddest Hatter had hints of.

5.Shattered- 10/10 A great song with that classic Dokken sound! This has a good heavy and catchy riff. The melodic chorus is excellent and sounds like classic Dokken. This song could have been a big hit in the 80's or 90's. Reb's solo is excellent and sounds a bit like Dimebag Darrell at times. Another classic!

6.One- 10/10 An odd choice of a cover but it works great! This is by far the best version of this song! Don's voice fits this song great. The heavier part of this song sounds great. Reb's solo is excellent and has a lot of feeling. This is one of my favorite songs on the album actually.

7.Who Believes- 10/10 A great power ballad. The softest part is excellent but when the electric guitar comes in this turns into a classic. One of the better songs on the album. Very melodic too. This has that 80's Dokken sound to it. Reb's soulful solo is excellent too. Another instant classic.

8.Voice Of The Soul- 9/10 Another good song. The chorus is the best part of this song. Another good solo by Reb. Not really anything memorable but cool to have another good song.

9.Crazy Mary Goes Round- 5/10 A 1950's version of metal? A filler where Mick Brown sings. This shouldn't have made the album. An ok song but skip it! It's pretty stupid.

10.Haunted Lullabye- 5.5/10 Kind of grungy. Not one of the better songs. I wouldn't hesitate to call this a filler. Reb's solo is cool though. Skip this one too unless you are into grunge.

11.In Your Honor- 10/10 Another excellent ballad! Don's vocals are incredible and most of the song is acoustic. There is some electric guitar in it too. The chorus is great too. A very melodic song with that classic Dokken sound.

12.Untitled- 10/10 Great instrumental! Far too short but again it has a classic Dokken sound to it. I wish that riff had been turned into a 4 or 5 minute song with vocals though.

Obviously you can see how much I enjoyed the album. I was so happy to see so many 80's style classics like Erase The Slate, Change the World, Shattered, One, Who Believes and In Your Honor plus 3 other good songs. The bottom line is if you liked the 80's Dokken albums than get this and if you like 80's metal in general than get this. The band is

When I first listened to this album I was impressed because of "Change the world". I thought this song was enough to realize that Dokken finally has gotten the way back to their better years. But, after listening the whole CD with more dedication, I found that it wasn't the good I thought it would be. I still love "Change the world" and I certainly like a bit of Three Dog Night's cover of "One". And that's it. Now I guess Dokken won't ever make an album such as great as "Under lock and key" or "Back for attack". And I'm not interested in "new sound" for a band like Dokken. I think they've lost their trademark, which was the melodic factor, something that put them apart from other metal bands of the 80's.

How could an 80's band make a record this good in the 90's?.......2004-11-27

As for us fans of "hair metal", we are use to finding our old favorite bands of the 80's reunited in the 90's and putting out trash as they go on an occassional greatest hits tour. Owing to this fact you may be scared to pick up another one of those awful cd's (Dokken's own "Shadow life" can attest to that fear). But have no fear, this record is such a suprise it is almost as if Nirvana never happened. This record rocks from the beginning to the end. The band is playing in top form and there is so much energy it is unbelievable. Reb Beach fits in on this record as if he has always been a part of the band. Why the hell did he leave? His solos are fluent, interesting, and technically incredible. What's more is that for once we can really hear how good his rythym playing is. It wasn't that you couldn't hear it in Winger, it's just that it was never as forward in the mix. The only bad thing I can say about this record is the ballads. It is not that they are bad it, is just that you would expect more from a band that wrote "Alone Again". If you can overlook the flaw of their not being a great ballad, and just appreciate the record as a whole, you will be satisfied.

OUTSTANDING! A MUST HAVE!.......2004-09-29

SOLID ALBUM FROM A TO Z! AFTER BACK FROM THE ATTACK THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST DOKKEN EVER. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THESE GUYS DIDN'T STICK TOGETHER LONGER AND PRODUCED MORE MUSIC AS BRILLIANT AS THE ONE YOU CAN LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM.

Worthwhile, barely..........2004-08-13

As aforementioned, this is definitely not at the calibre of "Under Lock and Key". But Dokken really, to me, is not in the same league as a Def Leppard or Van Halen used to be for putting out power melodies. So called hits like "Alone Again" or even "It's Not Love" are certainly not even close to Van Halen stuff. Still, there are some great songs here and there, which makes them listenable. Especially when one considers how bad music got after the eighties with the utterly chaotic and non-musical era of grunge. It really makes a person go back to those eighties bands and try to find some stuff that you may not have listened to then. Dokken was one of those bands for me. I have their so-called "Very Best Of", which is not really, once again, what the record company says it is. I noticed that the best Dokken cd is definitely Under Lock and Key. Erase the Slate is missing George Lynch who is really sucking wind on his own these days and has abandoned any attempt at creating power melodies. That leaves this fellow from Winger, Reb Beach. He is fantastic, but lacks that growl tone in his guitar that Lynch has. There are really only two singles on this cd: "Maddest Hatter" and "I Can't Change the World". The latter is an excellent, excellent song and the best of the two. If George Lynch were using his guitar with the "Screamin' Demon" pickup he uses it would sound even better. One can only wonder why "I can't Change the World" wasn't released as a single. Record company ignorance? Consumer apathy? Or, maybe people's sense of good taste has declined dramatically in the last twenty years or so. Could be.

Great Bluegrass Performances!.......2007-07-17

Please don't judge this CD on the only previous 3* rating - read the review and understand the issue - by itself regardless of the origin of these performances, this is just outstanding bluegrass music, a mixture of secular & gospel performances - I was amazed w/ this disc (only have one other CD by this group) - this music is 'infectious' - this is not 'background' listening, just impossible - foot stomping excitement all the way!

This is a good cd but I did not realize that it was a combination of Grandpa,s Mandolin and IIIrd Tyme Out. The quality is great and I really enjoy this group, but I bought all of these cds and I didn't need this one.

Perfectly Executed.......2006-08-01

While only a five-song EP, each of these songs is incredible, and this is a respectable CD, despite its length. The vocals are haunting, while the screams are heavy and coherent. The music itself trades off from being melodic, heavy, and soaring, and is usually a combination of all three. The entire album is exceptionally textured and layered. I would recommend this CD not only to metal fans, but also to people who want to hear musicians who know what they're doing.

Side note - Yes, the band has parted ways, and is now on and off with various members. The members of ETG can be traced to the following bands if you are interested: Shenoah, Apparatus, Burning Vegas, Ventana, and Abdullah.

Yes this album is a must have for anyones record collection.

I was doing some research to see what was going on with the members of Erase The Grey and found out that Jon Sayre has a new project called Burning Vegas.They are currently recording a 6 song E.P. as we speak and they have also recruited Ilyn Knapik from the band Nye as there Bassist. My only complaint about this c.d. is that it's and ep!!! There is not a bad song on this one. Their singer has a great voice and it's just great rock!!!I was sad to find out that ETG broke up, but three of the members have started in a new band called SHENOAH, I have only heard 4 songs off that c.d., but I like what I hear. Great c.d.!!!!! BUY IT!!!!!

Album Description

Their third album serves up narratives that examine the realities no one wants to look at: war and poverty. The lyrics are about the government, political disillusionment, and being distracted by nightlife, consumerism, and celebrity watching. After some sound and line up changes, the band has largely abandoned their skronky, dance punk sound, but they're still dynamic, elastic, and danceable. They even sound like a pop band at times. All their changes and efforts are well evidenced on this record's twelve tracks of polished chaos. The group is as powerful and unhinged as ever.

New Wave of No Wave Grrrls Get Their Groove On.......2006-08-02

It's been a few years since Erase Errata's last album, "At Crystal Palace," was released, and in that time the band has changed their personel somewhat (guitarist Sara Jaffe has departed for grad school). Fortunately, their spiky, fiery post-punk hasn't changed, but (can ya believe it) "matured." Now when I say that I don't mean "got soft," but now they've learned how to get their groove on. Whereas on their previous LP's the rhythm section of Bianca Sparta (drums) and Ellie Erickson (bass) stayed true to their intitial inspiration, the "No Wave" scene of the late 70's, here they're adding in danceable ryhthms that other post-punkers dabbled in (Gang Of Four, say). Yeah yeah yeah, you say, so has every other hipster band in New York these days--big freakin' deal. Ah, but the guitars of Jenny Hoyston are simply in a much higher league than say, the Rapture or Radio 4. While she still likes letting loose with a salvo of skronky noise, she can also effortlessly run off a bit of surf rock or even something in the realm of late jazz giant Sonny Sharrock. No, she doesn't approach the guitar nirvana that Sonic Youth has perfected, but she also doesn't try to copy them either. Some songs, like "Giant Hands," go for the kind of energy that Sleater-Kinney had early in their carreer. Many others recall the late, great Dog Faced Hermans (who?--you say--well, search out and buy anything of theirs you can--you won't be disappointed!).

Lyrically, Erase Errata still cling to the disjointed imagery all too common in indie rock, and a few songs offer some undercooked poitical commentary (from "Tax Dollar": "See us injure, see us steal/See us talking on about another kill"). These are minor quibbles in the long run, though, because the power of the music easily compensates. If you want to rock out, but you also want a bit of an experimental edge, then "Nightlife" is this year's best bet. Erase Errata are way more punk then all those MTV-approved brats and whiners, and way smarter as well. This is the kind of thing that'll get me dancing around the house in my underwear--okay, that's a very disturbing image, but it'll be worth it when you hear this.

Simply very great.......2000-01-10

I'm not a so great fanatic of Gorefest, but a friend of me, said to me: "Listen this cassette". OK, I listened it, and I really found it very great. It haves a very great guitar, and his melodys and riffs are very original, I never heard so original music before.

Well, I hope you'll understand this message, because I don't speak english very good, all I want to say is that this CD is a very good one, and if you like original music, you'll have to listen these one.

Erase: Truly Gorefest, Except the Production.......1999-08-31

Erase was Gorefest's third studio album (not counting the live album "Eindhoven Insanity") and can respectfully called experimental. The sound on this album is again highly powerful, but does give a funny aftertaste when you compare it to the first two albums (Mindloss and False). Afterall; the first two are classic metal albums with recognisable sound, but this album has a rather unique metal-sound. So if you DON'T compare this album to their previous ones, this is a great album. But the reason for the average rate for this album is simply because they screwed with the sound producing. The sound is pure, but is far too clean! A terrible result for a metal band. Besides that the songs are, in contradiction to the previous and slower album "False", much faster and the return of unique guitarriffs make this album a perfect addittion to Gorefest fans.

Essential.......2007-05-22

Taking the jagged post punk rythms of Mission Of Burma and Fugazi and combining it with a harder edged post hardcore sound, Transistor Transistor are truly a band to watch out for. The album Erase All Name And Likeness is solid, start to finish, filled with incidniary guitar and bass playing, fluid and forceful drumming and venomous yet thoughtful lyrics. Absolutely essential for anyone who enjoys post punk/hardcore!

Even Better than the First Album.......2006-02-22

It's about time bands start getting some influence from no-wave. Now that new-wave is making a bit of a comeback with the whole 80's revival of the past few years, it's about time no-wave reared its deformed head. In actuality Erase Errata are far more approachable than many of these early no-wavers, but don't hold that against them, they'll still try and punish you with their sounds. Piercing guitar notes over swirling bass and drums, these girls make you work to get their music. You can tell that these four girls from San Francisco have musical chemistry, and while at first listen you might think they learned to play five minutes ago, upon repeat listen you realize how damn catchy all the songs really are. Add a trumpet that sounds like something from an Angelo Badalamenti score and you've got one hell of a band. Erase Errata claim they wrote ten songs the first half an hour they were together, and you can tell a definite difference between their improvised songs and those more structured, but don't worry, I doubt you'll find dead heads listening Erase Errata jam out anytime soon; I bet Jerry Garcia would have had to smoke at least a pound of weed before he got into this. However, on this album it's apparent that there's less improvisation than on their last album, Other Animals. Besides, the often sparse arrangements make it absolutely certain that these chicks carry a punk aesthetic through and through.

they're no Scissor Girls.......2003-11-27

This is okay, pretty good. I'd go so far as to say it's not bad. But for christ sakes music listeners, go back to the source and listen to the Scissor Girls! Start with "We People Space With Phantoms" and work your way through their other mazes. THEN come back and listen to this. Having said that, I should also say that I think Erase Errata is a very good band and you should try to see them live -- how about that drummer, eh? Still, they're no Scissor Girls.

a good record.......2003-10-29

Their debut album from a couple years ago may one day be considered a classic and this album isn't too bad from what I am hearing. I have listened the whole way through 4-5 times and it is a very cohesive record that flows well throughout with the occassional failure, but that was really basically the same with the last record. The one difference with this record and the first is that the first record had some really great high points while this one doesn't achieve those highs quite as often. It's still one of my favorites from this year, but I wouldn't say it is better than the Drive By Truckers record, Beulah record, or Broken Social Scene record. If you liked the first album then definitely buy this one, but if you are new to this band and are looking to buy their best album go with their first.
