Once the epitome of extremism, Napalm Death pales in comparison to later groups like Emperor and At the Gates. Knowing this, Napalm gave up trying to be the most abrasive force in the kingdom, and aimed to be more artistically worthy. Instead of jackhammering the same riffs ad nauseam, Diatribes bludgeons with a variety of tools, exploring elements of "grindcore", industrial, avant-garde, and even funk along the way. Along with creative growth came musical prowess, and for the first time, the members of Napalm Death manipulate their instruments like skilled veterans, instead of like overzealous novices. This is a great effort by Napalm Death. Some of the songs remind me of the Brutal Truth album 'Need To Control'.
Diatribes is a great cd to mosh around the house to. Thae songs are catchy and you'll know them all in less than a week.
Definitely worth a listen if you're into death metal, Sepultura, Fear Factory and alike.

This is a great Napalm Death disc. Very different from anything they ever have done. I loved it when it came out, and til this day, I listen to it. Definitely their most commercially accessable, but still not mainstream by any means.

By the way, although Jon Wiederhorn's assessment of this album in the editorial review is fairly accurate, to dismiss previous releases as novice or amateur, and furthermore to state that Emporer or At The Gates are more brutal than Napalm......let's just say that that guy has no business placing an "editorial" review on this page.

4 out of 5 stars I Agree, This Is *gasp* Catchy.......2005-01-10

I Agree with Osmun315, in the way that this CD is not the 'best' Napalm Death CD, but is still worthy of having. I think the most catchy song is Greed Killing, which was also the single, and there was a video for it too when it came out. I think anyone into Napalm Death should probably already have this CD, but anyone who wants to get into them should get this as well. It's Great.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but a great disc anyway........2004-10-25

As far as ND cd's go, this is far from the top. As far as metal albums go, a lot of bands can learn from this one. It brings grindcore and death into a new realm that makes it almost >gasp< catchy.

For new fans to ND, I would say that this is a pretty safe way to get into the band. Before you know it, they will have you hooked.

    Product Description

The roots/folk duo Wishing Chair, Kiya Heartwood and Miriam Davidson, sixth CD, Underdog is full of great Kiya penned songs, "it's folk to the core," says Walter Tunis, Music Critic, Lexington Herald-Leader . There's the bluesy menace of "Underdog," political anthems like "Bully Circus," “Adagio” and "Outlaw Wedding," the bittersweet harmonies of “Fieldtown Road Construction,” "Sidewalks" and "Be," historical ballads like "Sue Mundy" and "Calamity Jane" and rocking reflections like "Oz," “One Real Song,” and "Highway Lullaby." Produced in Austin by veteran producer Mark Hallman (Ani DiFranco, Eliza Gilkyson), the CD features guest musicians Eamon Mcloughlin and Kym Warner (The Greencards), Cisco Ryder (Eliza Gilkyson), Robert McEntee (Navaro), and Brian Standefer (Patty Griffith).

    Album Description

The band's sound mixes rock, worldbeat, funk, and blues in a unique manner that reflects the wildly divergent musical tastes of the individuals involved. Snipe Hunt's musical philosophy is that four musicians playing together are always at risk of creating songs that sound too similar to each other--therefore, the band tries to touch on as many interesting styles of music as possible (though, it should be noted, that this CD is a "no polka" zone). Lyrically, the songs range from observations of the ugly political and cultural realities of living in this place at this time to just plain cheap sexual innuendos. And, for the first time on a modern Western audio recording, you will be able to hear the sounds of an actual snipe hunt (recorded surreptitiously) from insidious beginning to sad, lonely ending. Snipe Hunt touches upon the Classics in its crepitatous recording "Snipe Hunt Sonata No. 43 in E flat."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bunch of damn liberals!.......2001-10-11

"We'll be right back!," by Snipe Hunt is a welcome change from the reincarnated "New Kids on the Block" bands that have inundated todays music scene. These guys obviously drink beer, eat red meat, and check out hot women, while the current "Boy Bands" sip bottled water, eat tofu, and check out each other's hair.
You get the feeling Snipe Hunt is having fun, but there are messages in their music. Politics, social structure are mixed in with an eclectic musical blend that will either move you to protest or just ... ... Either way, you cannot deny "We'll be right back!" had no effect on you.
Having heard the CD at the counterculture art festival known as "Burningman," I also camped with Walt Ehresman of Snipe Hunt. I bribed one of the local radio station DJ's with beer so we could hear Snipe Hunt on the air. Turns out she cut one of the songs short because "the guitar solo was too long." Anyway, the CD technically had some airplay and it fit in with Burningman tenet of "Radical Self Expression," while others believe it was "Leave No Trace."
Take it or leave it, "We'll be right back!" makes you think about stuff in general. Stuff like the government, the environment, and about how many beers you can drink while eating a blood-red steak.

5 out of 5 stars Snipe Hunt.... Bullseye!.......2001-10-05

This is a band of unique, talented musicians. Lyrically, it's powerful,
cathartic, satirical and at times, dark. Walter Ehresman doesn't mince words about
political and social injustice. Sadness, anger, disillusionment and cynicism
are at times unrelenting and heavily featured emotions. It's a combination
voyeuristic shrink session and political rant! His lyrics require listeners to pay
attention, ponder their meaning and think of how it relates to their own individual cosmos.
Snipe Hunt Sonata #43 in E flat is the comic relief. You'll be playing it over and over
    again! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The monkey knows.......1999-08-26

The task: to explain to the uninitiated as well as those in the know what the Snipehunt CD sounds like. Mission impossible. A discourse on quantum physics would probably make more sense. Weird, obviously, is a given. Reading the lyrics and listening to the stunning vocals and indescribable slap-and-slash bass, one gets the sense that they are completely immersed in a strange world. Though the CD doesn't exclude the average listener (everyone is welcome!), those without an open mind will certainly feel as if they're missing the punch line of a particularly hilarious in-joke. Lovable and bizarre, 'We'll be right back' is a much fuller CD than the band's previously unreleased CD (the previous CD was banned after a Pat Robertson supporter witnessed the live version of 'Sonata No. 43 in E flat) There is definately a place in every collector's vault for one of these gems. This band rulz!

5 out of 5 stars Never knew what to expect next--Blues-Rock-SambaJazz Twister.......1999-08-20

What a strange and enjoyable break from the norm! Really reminds me of Frank Zappa Really calmed down, with a sprinkle of Canned Heat,a dash of Muddy Waters,Ted Nuggent and a splash of Samba and Aferican Music into one hell've an album!!! Way to go guy's!! Where do we get tickets to see You all live??? Really excelent!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely not Mozart, but genius none the less........1999-05-11

"These boys are unwell, a fact made all the more disturbing by my certainty that they will soon be IN CONTROL around here. To avoid dire retribution during their evil reign, I now enthusiastically give them five stars. Children should only use under proper supervision. I have found this CD to be a great comfort to me while carp fishing and pondering the infinite."

Dig in. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Catchy Death Metal.......2007-06-02

This is a great effort by Napalm Death. Some of the songs remind me of the Brutal Truth album 'Need To Control'.
Diatribes is a great cd to mosh around the house to. Thae songs are catchy and you'll know them all in less than a week.
Definitely worth a listen if you're into death metal, Sepultura, Fear Factory and alike.

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-05-12
