Truth Hurt's vocals have a frosty chill. The singer, a protégé of hitmaker Dr. Dre, lustily moans and wails about a lover who turns her pages on the sinewy Dre and DJ Quik collaboration "Addictive," but her edgy resolve and steely seductiveness undercut any notion of romance. This makes her inviting moment of passion more like a warning shot. That push and pull between distance and desire is present throughout most of this rugged effort. From the mournful lament "Bullshit" (produced by Organized Noize) to a seething, if somewhat pedantic, duet with R. Kelly ("The Truth") or the loose and limber tale of a lover in prison ("Jimmy"), Truth Hurts creates her R&B in a space where men and life never fail to disappoint. Luckily, that dejected and bitter outlook makes for an often-fierce CD. --Amy Linden

I can't speak for anyone elses' personal taste,but,I LOVED,this album!!From the,catchy "Indian"music on "Addictive"to the RARE,type of song that expounds'on the virtues'of a"real"man..("This Feeling")..In,this day and age where a group of goofy,(condom decorated)immature lil' girls'from the"Downy-Soft"are praised and,EMBRACED,for being "intelligent"enough,to label a man,who,just happens to be a passenger(seeing as,how only,ONE,person,can drive a vehicle at a given time)in his friends'car,a"Scrub"It was a real breath of fresh air,to hear,a mature,WOMAN,from the,"Wicked West"discuss,one by one,the traits'of a MAN..B/S really DOES' fall down like rain,and apparently,the radio stations'and,video shows'are the STORMCLOUDS,for supporting such GARBAGE!!! "Jimmy"is a true-to-life,all too,often occuring tale,that waaay,too many,women that I know,have been through!!Truth covered a lot.of relevant topics'concerning the black community,for her to be getting,all the negative feedback,that she's getting,on this site!!"Ease Back"on tha' girl people!! With lines like:Have,you ever FELT,someone deep down,in your soul..."NOTICE,I,DIDN'T say love...Love is EASY,I said FEEL!!!Truths' REAL man virtues,she mentioned:Power,Strength Vision Respect,Love,Game,Capability,to make you feel thangs!!"Sweetness"(NOT,to be confused with"Soft"or"Weak")"Are you tryin' to make it HARDER,for the NEXT man?!?" 4 out of 5 stars Why is everybody saying this is bad?.......2006-12-06

I really do not understand the reasoning behind everyone's terrible reviews for this album. I personally believe that this is a very strong release. Some of the production falls a little flat at times, but that is really the only flaw. She shows her vocal ability and power in every song and almost every song in relatable. She is not overly "ghetto," like many say. If the language bothers you, get the clean version. Simple as that. Despite what people think, I love this album and believe that it should be in every R&B lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars QUEEN OF THE GHETTO.......2006-02-24

I WISH SHE WAS STILL ON AFTERMATH,OR IS SHE?ANYWAY,NEVER MIND THAT..SHE CAN SING&HIT ALL THE NOTES.WITH SKILLFUL VOCALS,HOT LYRICS&PHAT PRODUCERS,WHAT MORE CAN I ASK FOR.THIS WAS ANOTHER ALBUM THAT WAS SLEPT ON.SHE'S GOT SOME SOUL IN HER,BUT WHATEVER HAPPENED,HAPPENED.ANYWAY THE TRUTH HURTS

4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good but can't stand the hype.......2005-08-03

I don't understand alot of ppl are criticizing or hating or have a distaste 4 this album. I'd been awaiting to get this 4 so long since it was released in '02. I was like 17 and 1/2 when this came rightafter my junior yr. in high school and still sounds good today. Prove to me, IMO Truth Hurts (whose real name is Shari Watson) is truly talented and a lil 'mo gangsta a bit I mean has extraordinary vocals and sure can singing which is a gift from God. Once I listen to it which I bought used @ CD Warehouse, I was a bit impressed and quite not worried nor dissappointed at all. I believe it's still nearly-Classic IMO just b/c it hasn't made 5 or 10 (or Superior) yet. Ok I actually luv the song "Addictive" true to be pretty good kinda reminds me "Uhhh Oohhhh..." by my girl Lumidee (whose my favorite singer) and surely the beats, the drum parts and 'urything to it incl. the rap thing by my man and all-time favorite Rakim. He sure is the illest rapper out there.

Other songs included I like are: Hollywood, Push Play, The Truth, to name a few. So this is not a bad album at all. I hope I keep this just to listen a lil' more or see it's real interesting. No hard feelings. This is sure is a must if u wanna try this girl out and the other thing checkout her latest release putout last yr. which trully titled TRUTHFULLY or maybe self-titled. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This Truth Hurts album got me so "Addicted!".......2005-02-05

I was intending on reviewing this album when it first came out, but it slipped my mind. But I am reviewing Truth's first album Truthuflly Speaking now, and here is what I thought about this album:

01. Push Play
This is sort of an introduction to the album. Truth says this is Truth, when it's real you got to face it. It's called the truth, I think I heard somebody say it this way. Then the beat changes and Dr. Dre introduces his new artist on Aftermath.
02. Addictive (Featuring Rakim)
What can I say about this song, we all know this was the first single fromt the album that introduced Truth to the world. The beat and production on the song is straight up off the hook. Produced by DJ Quick, and I must say he did his thang on this one.
03. Next To Me
This song is a plea from Truth to her man, saying that if ur not Next To Me, I need X-tasy. The beat on this track is very melodic. And it'll make u feel the vibe that this song is bringin'.
04. Jimmy
This songs is about playa who's been locked down by the name of Jimmy. On it she's tellin' a story. The verses are like a paragrah or chapter. Each one tellin' how much she misses her man.
05. Grown
The track is like a emancipation track of sorts, it's like your no longer a child or teenager, ur now grown. Dealin' with life day-2-day situations. Not being misunderstood, noone tellin' you what's wrong, right, bad or good. You should feel free to release it if that's the way you're fellin, ur Grown!.
06. This Feelin'.
My favorite track off the album. This song is mainly for the women. But anyone can get somethin' from this song. You can flip the words to cater 2 u. Also on this song Truth vocals are very strong, one thing I really like about this artist.
07. Tired
Truth is makin' conversation to one of her girlfriends. Tellin' her that she's been tested by people, stressed out, been through it all basically. Tired is a dramatic track. Like if u have family and friends who turned into enemies, baby that's hollerin' til' the quarter of 3 in the morning, and your mate that's flippin' out and stressin' you. And ur just Tired.
08. I'm Not Really Lookin' (Featuring DJ Quick)
This is one of those West Coast party tracks, a tight beat from DJ Quick. You can really throw somehtin' and put on this track and just grove to it.
09. B.S. (Featuirng Big Rube)
Now we all deal with B.S. @ one time or another. On this track she explain what all she's been through when she was caught up. But you should not believe everything you hear, let the truth be known. Also she says (b.s. pours down like rain, which is tru).
10. Queen Of The Ghetto (Featuring Kittie a.k.a. Cita)
What really stands out on this track is Cita's squeaky ghetto female voice. Cita also get's explict on this track. This song is kinda like a long interlude on the album. But I do like to beat 2 this song.
11. The Truth
R. Kelly is on this track, but on the album, they don't credit him on this song, they only say he's the prodcer, etc. Anywho, this was the second single off the album. I really like this track. U can't run away from the truth, or u can't hide it.
12. Real
Timbaland produced this track. Many people say this is the closest Timabalnd & Dr. Dre got to collaborating with each other. The beat on this song is tight. I also thought this song could have been a single.
13. Hollywood (Featuring Dr. Dre)
Dr. Dre explains how life is in hollywood. What's hilarious 2 me is when he talks about tight pants on guys, which is very uncomfortable lol. Truth follow up the rhymes by Dre. So all-n-all this is one hot tack.
14. Do Me
This is a song that I can really relate to. In life you have to Do You. Go out and get urs. You know how to please yourself, and this is how it gotta be, you got to do yourself and make urself happy!!!.

**The first album from Truth a.k.a. Truth Hurts was a tight album, I thought it would sell alot, but things happen. But that didn't mean people wasn't feelin' this album. I really believe U should go out and pick this one up. U won't be disappointed when u buy it and listen 2 it.**

4 out of 5 stars Top Quality Hip Hop.......2006-04-07

First let me say that the reviews by "tim", "otg", and "fatha" are moronic at best. I've had this album for, I believe over 3 years now and it still gets regular rotation. Mind you i have over 500 cd's to choose from in my collection. This is grass roots hiphop... beats (bangers and jazzy mellow joints), lyrics are crazy..see the other review on here with the quoted verse... and just look at the friggin album cover...Ed O G is no chicken head/laffy taffy rapper. Maybe from a producers standpoint approximately 3 of the beats are monotonous.. but still remind u of the golden age of hip hop...simple loops and raw introspective, street thug and street philosopher rolled into one album. ED O G is one of the only hip hop prophets left!!!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars doesn't actually cut it........2004-11-02

You should have 10 stars, this guy is a lyrical genius. For those giving this album 1-3 stars, I understand your opinion, but maybe give it another listen too. I find things everyday now different and more exciting than the last. When I first bought this album, I kinda thought the same thing, "oh this isn't really that good, I wish it was better!" So I put it down for 6 months and listened to other things. A week ago I picked it back up again, and never realised how good this album really was. Super Production, awesome beats, amazing vocabulary and wordplay, and all around phenominal album. To say it is worth buying, is an understatement, read the reviews that mention the track titles, and then listen to it. It will most definitely change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Ed O.G....Talk About Finding A Diamond in The Rough!!.......2002-12-07

First, let me be honest about something. I'm a very close-minded
individual when it comes to my Hip-Hop, and I only
listen to certain artists. I don't like commercial music, and
I don't watch videos or listen to the radio. I'm into lyrisict
like Nas, Common, Rass Kass, Biggie, Pac, Black Starr, anyone
who's great. I never did hear of Ed O.G. until about a year or two ago, even though he's been around for over a decade.
When my friend played one of Ed's singles, from his now
"classic" The Truth Hurts, I went bananas...the song
is laced with Premo's proudction and timeless lyrics

"Alcohol and weed is my vices
to see my daughter smile is priceless
I leave the nicest lifeless
Return like Christ in a crisis
Take this American Pie, and distribute out slices"

Wow!!I'm a M.C. myself, and this man's lyrical ability inspires
me. I went out and bout his album, and the man's music
exceeded my expectations. Pure Hip-Hop...if you're into
Nelly, Ja-Rule, Baby, P.Diddy, most of the stuff on 106 and Park..then
DONT PURCHASE THIS ALBUM!!! This is Real Hip-Hop!!!

2 out of 5 stars This Truth Hurts.......2002-03-05

Sometimes people had better retire than go on. Ed O.G. seems to fall into this category. The Boston hip-hop legend tries to come on again with pitiful beats and commonplace lyrics every other haphazard MC can spit. The whole thing combines to be an extraordinarily boring fifty odd minutes of super-mediocre hip-hop that doesnt in any way merit to be on one of the NuGruv labels.
The only thing that saves it is Ed O.G.'s name. That is to say, only buy this album if you have the intention to complete your discography of Ed O.G. by adding this pitfall to your collection. Otherwise I recommend you download the one or two tracks that are worth listening to (!) ...

1 out of 5 stars And Only One Star!.......2001-09-11

...make no mistake...this disc is worthless. Awfull bubble gum beats(save one typically tight Premo joint!)... If you like utterly boring hip hop with boring common beats, commonplace and insipid rhymes, and whack hooks...run out and get this ASAP. If not peep "Things Fall Apart" instead.

Somewhere between the nasty-girlisms of Millie Jackson and the morality tales of Shirley Brown--and come to think of it, the morality tales of Millie Jackson--rests Truth Hurts. After one album under the auspices of Dr. Dre, the singer returns with Raphael Saadiq's Pookie label. Even Saadiq's most straightforward projects come with offbeat moments: Right Now puts Truth's not-shy persona and her rich, overdubbed vocals alongside his insinuating steel guitar ("Catch 22") and Bollywood-tinged tracks that suggest that producers Alonzo Jackson and Brian "B. Dub" Wilson have been paying attention to Timbaland's recent work. At the heart of all this is one woman's, er, truth, regrets and all. Suited for both street cruising and bedroom listening, Ready Now promises more to come from this intriguing talent. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Truth is more than ready.......2005-08-31

Truth's second album, Ready Now succeeds her debut in a number of ways. Unlike Truthfully Speaking, Ready Now isn't full of the A-list producers her debut featured. Truth's music isn't hurt by the abscense of big names such as Timbaland or Dr. Dre. Working with lesser known producers can be a step in the right direction for artists being that it creates a more "original" sound. Production wise Tony Toni Tone frontman, Raphael Saadiq takes on the production duties among others. Saadiq known for his bluesy southern soul and funk works well with Truth. On the funky title track, Truth sings over a pulsating beat that sucks you in with illict lyrics. Truth also seems to have toned down on her vocals which before were all over the place. This time Truth is more subdued delivering smoldering sexy soul music which is slowly becoming her trademark. While this album isn't as commercial as her first release listeners will enjoy Truth's sassiness and sense of humor. Truth hurts, but it definitely feels good!

4 out of 5 stars Not her best, but ok.......2005-03-19

It was ok but it should have been much longer. 11 songs just doesnt cut it with an rnb record. Her first album was a blockbuster this one was just an attempt to release another cd. Knock Knock, and Ready Now, Phone Sex, and Catch 22 are the basic good songs here.

3 out of 5 stars I don't think the world was ready for the Truth!.......2005-01-30

Truth Hurts came out a few years back with her blazing single "Addictive" which featured Rakim. Being that she was one of Dr. Dre's girls, she had a West Coast vibe. Nobody knew who she was or what she could accomplish. Many people loved the single but hated the album "Truthfully Speaking". Truth went back into the studio before completing her sophomore album "Ready Now" which is by far a great CD. Some songs stand out more than others, but after one day with this CD, you're hooked.

1. Knock Knock (8/10) - Nice song with a hot beat. You can't help but nod your head to the beat. Vocals are great. Rafael Saadiq helps on this track.

2. Ready Now (10/10) - The best song on the album. I believe it was a single though I never heard much about it. The beat is hot and different which makes me attracted to it. I love this song!

3. Ride (6/10) - Nice beat, nice lyrics, but it's missing something.

4. Love U Better (9/10) - A deep, sexual song. Truth is really X-Rated on much of her album. This song takes you into sexual extasy.

5. Catch 22 (5/10) - Alright song. Nothing special.

6. Phone Sex (8/10) - A very sexy song. The beat gets you all excited. Never heard a song about phone sex before.

7. Whatchu Sayin' (featuring Loon) (4/10) - Very weird. I don't like this song that much.

8. Lifetime (Interlude) - Just an interlude where she calls up some girl.

9. Lifetime (2/10) - Nothing special here. She gets a 2 for her vocals because she can sing!

10. Can't Be Mad (6/10) - Never really listen to it, but the beat is good and the vocals sound tight.

11. U (8/10) - Truth slows it down and stretches it out for this 7 minute song. Although it tends to repeat itself, it doesn't get old. It's nice.

If Truth had more promotion behind this album, it could have done better than it did.

Overall Grade: B-

5 out of 5 stars One of the best hardcore albums of all time.......2001-07-09

Pro-Pain is one of the best metal acts to survive into 2001, and their 1994 album, "The Truth Hurts", is their finest ever. This album is a hardcore masterpiece; a brutal sonic assault from the start of "Make Love Not War" to "Switchblade Knife" at the end. Fans of today's watered down neo-metal bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit will walk away from this album with bleeding ears and confused looks on their faces, but fans of acts like Sepultura and Motorhead will eat it up. Even a baffling duet with Ice-T (in the vein of Body Count, not his rap work) comes off brilliantly. The lyrics involve genocide, anger, murder, dirty politics, and drug rehabilitation. It's not lite listening, folks.

Singer/bassist Gary Meskil's distorted howling and the crushing sound of a wall of guitars have never sounded better than on this album. This is the album to buy if you have any interest in Pro-Pain or ear splitting hardcore.

It must be said that first of all, Pro Pain does not pocess all that much musical talent; however they sure have produced an awsome album here. Singer/bassist Gary Meskil's distorted howling and the crushing sound of a wall of guitars have never sounded better than on this album. This is the album to buy if you have any interest in Pro-Pain or ear splitting hardcore.

5 out of 5 stars A surprise hit by an unknown band.......1999-10-13

It must be said that first of all, Pro Pain does not pocess all that much musical talent; however they sure have produced an awsome album here. In fact it is my favortite metal album I have ever listened to. Give it a chance. Buy it. Listen to to it once then again and you will understand what I am talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Can a song get any more 'PIMP' than this one?.......2003-03-29

What I mean in my title by 'PIMP' is that this here song by Truth Hurts "Addictive" is one of the most up-beat jamz of my time! This songs haz' got it all in my opinion. If y'all lookin' for a way cool method to get your blood pumpin' or even get those lovehandles a lot slimmer then buy this way cool CD SINGLE TODAY cuz' it's gunna' make y'all sweat!

4 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2003-02-26

I'm not a big R&B fan, but "Addictive" rocks. Truth Hurts has an excellent singing voice, and the beat is tight. The song is catchy, yet unique with an East-Indian flavor. I love it!

"Addictive" also features hip hop legend Rakim. His rhyme flow is amazing on this song, as it usually is on other stuff featuring him. The combination of a graceful singing voice, a rap god, and hip hop beats mixed with the music of India easily makes "Addictive" worthy of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Cut, consider the most played song of all.......2006-07-01

Dre and Quik up on the Boards with Truth and Rakim on the set of this song. But love the sample of the B.T. Express' "Do It 'Till You Satisifed" which is used for the songs. Alot of rappers, singers and artists all across really stole the conga parts used on they songs or top hits. They think of it as a trademark y'know like a chant or a Spiritual ritual.

This song is real cool to play & listen to while @ work, BBQ'in', getting some sunshine, or just wanna have a party or feel in the move to get down. That's more enjoyable or fun-like.

    4 out of 5 stars Cool Jam.......2005-12-24

I Love Pro Pain but this album falls short of the self-titled, Round 6, Fistful of Hate releases.

      5 out of 5 stars Must Own.......2003-01-16

This is by far the best album these guys have released. It is fast, aggressive, and very tight. If you like your music loud and in your face, you must definitely give this album a listen. My personal favorite tracks are; The Truth Hurts
      Make War Not Love
      The Beast Is Back

Give this album a listen and let me know what you think!
