Reborn is indeed a rebirth for the band and their debut for Tooth & Nail Records. Gone are the death-metal and grind-core references that made the band a joke to fans of other musical genres. In its place are nods to the modern metal and hardcore sounds that are exploding from the underground. The change is not imitative, but a natural extension of Living Sacrifice's previous image, reflected through personnel and industry changes. Famed Little Rock producer Barry Poynter's work on the record outshines the efforts of more popular producers from larger cities. He helps expand Sac's sonics from a heavy, metal midrange to a beefy, crisp, thunderous roar. Monster riffs, huge rock hooks, tricky tape loops, and classical-guitar interludes provide the details that, along with the band's improved songwriting and streamlined performance approach, puts them in a new category: metal that matters. --Brad Caviness

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

For those of you who never left 1985, a time when metal bands had big hair, singers reached for the highest note, and drummers twirled their drumsticks between beats, I bring good news: Stryper is back! Then again, after listening to the "comeback" release Reborn, it sounds like they never left. And while the yellow-and-black spandex may be gone, the vocal theatrics of Michael Sweet remain in tracks like "Make You Mine," "Rain," and "When Did I See You Cry." The band updates its sound some with the edgier "Open Your Eyes" and on the title track. "10,000 Years" is another curiosity as Sweet takes lyrics from the timeless classic hymn "Amazing Grace" and wraps them around a metal rave-up. But for the majority of this release, they'll be no mistaking the guitar riffs of Oz Fox, let alone the tin-can, rat-a-tat-tat drumming of Robert Sweet. New bassist Tracy Ferie capably locks down the rhythm section as a successor to original bass player Tim Gaines. Otherwise, it all seems to be frozen in time. If you never left the 80s, you'll love Reborn. Break out the Aquanet and studded belt and live to rock another day with the original Christian metal band. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Great to hear these guys again!.......2007-05-03
I have been a fan of Stryper since the mid-90's when I was looking for an alternative to all of heavy medal/melodic bands of the time. I've never been one to like explicit lyrics - I just enjoyed the sound of heavy guitars and a great voice. I remember listening to a sample of Stryper's first album in a book store and saying "This is it!" I bought the album and kept on buying them through the 90's. The thing I liked best was the original (hard to do in that genre) sound and Michael Sweet's voice. I mean, this guy can really sing! He had the best voice in heavy metal bar none - Christian or secular. I had the pleasure of hearing him sing outside of the band once and I was amazed.
So on to the new album. I bought it because it was Stryper - that's the only reason - and I'm enjoying it very much. The first track reminds me of Stone Temple Pilots. Heaviest sound I've heard from this band - not like their old stuff at all. Oz has learned some new stuff! But it worried me a little - where was that old familiar sound I loved? I found it a little further in the middle. My favorite part of the album is the middle to the end. That's where the melodies start to surface and a smile came to my face.
In summary, this album is growing on me. I've listened to the whole thing around 6 times and it gets better each time. Sweet's voice is still excellent and the songs sound great. This is the first album I've heard in a while that makes me want to listen to it LOUD! The louder the better! I roll down the windows on my car and let it rip! The only reason I gave it four stars is because I think they can actually do better. And I hope they try!
A Very Good Comeback Album.......2007-04-09
First of all, lets put things into perspective. The 80's are over, and Stryper had been out of the picture for more than 10 years. Second, I'm a huge Stryper fan and have kept up with Michael Sweet's solo projects. Thirdly, while this is a good album, it doesn't quite hit the peaks of their hayday. Finally, I'm going to try and write an honest review!
So let's continue.
"Reborn" is quite literlly that - it's a graduation from where they left off with "Against The Law", without ignoring the musical stylings of the 90's and 00's, but with a nod to their background and history. The mix is a little thin at times - Robert's drumming needs some extra "oomph" on the snare drum and more tom fills. And while Tim Gaines does not play on this album, Tracey Ferrie has stepped into the role beautifully, adding some needed definition on the bass. Oz and Michael's guitar work is very much up to standard, with some excellent riffs and lead breaks (IGWT is a classic example of this). Michael's voice is as strong as ever and is still able to hit those very high notes. The best part of this album is the depth in the songwriting. There is hardly a filler track on the album, and it is consistently rocking, even when it pulls back on tracks like "Rain" and "Passion".
The problem with the album lies in the "sameness" factor. Yes, the themes are different from song to song, and yes there are peaks and troughs. But occasionally a few of the songs can sound the same. This essentially comes down to the open guitar motifs and the mix. Thankfully, songs such as "Passion" and "When Did I See You Cry" break up some of the monotony and allow the more powerful tracks like "Reborn" room to breathe and open up.
So, how does it stand up again their earlier material?
It's hard to compare "Reborn" with their other albums, simply because there's been some 10-15 between recordings. However, it has much stronger songwriting than "The Yellow and Black Attack", more guts the "In God We Trust", but doesn't quite hit the diversity or power of "To Hell With The Devil". It's probably closer to on par with "Against The Law".
A couple of things to note:
1. "Rain" is actually a re-recording of the song that appeared on Michael Sweet's "Truth" demo album (the blue cover one)
2. IGWT is a re-recording of their classic "In God We Trust" from the same album (and seriously, the new recording rocks soooo much better!)
3. There are two cover versions you can get - one with the hands and one with the four leads "peeling" off their skin.
4. "10,000 Years" is a rewrite of the classic hymn "Amazing Grace"
5. Even though they were bagged for it, surely one of their piano ballads couldn't have gone amiss? Admit it, any Stryper fan knows all the words of "Honestly".
So, should you own it? If you're a Stryper fan, definitely. If you want to hear Christian rock at a peak, yes. If you hate anything rock and Christian, then I don't know if this is going to change your mind. But it just might. Yes, it just might.
why?.......2006-12-31
The good:Michael can still sing! The bad:everything else. I'm going back to 1987 if you don't mind.
reborn to the mid 90's?.......2006-11-20
Wow! Stryper has a new album out. Funny it sounds exactly like a cross between Saigon Kick and every other Nirvana inspired band of the 90's only not quite as good. Nothing to see here.. move along.
Seriously, I remember seeing Stryper in 1986-ish for the Soldiers tour and , even though they weren't my favorite band, I was still impressed with the musicanship of the band. In an age where most (if not all) Christian bands sounded EXACTLY like mainstream metal bands, these guys (while a little on the girly side) at least had their own sound.
This CD is horrid! The guitar work sounds like something a garage band would come up with as either a warm-up or an execercise and is definatly not up to par with some of the amazing work on Against the Law or Soldiers. The vocals.. well he seems to have stumbled on the effects section of the mixer manuals. They range from completly incoherant to the same effects that Dokken used on Disfunctional back in 1995. The drums are the most uninspiring thing I've heard in a while, was he awake when he recorded them? Straight time with little to no syncopation? As for the new bassist.. well anything he may have done is drown out by the deliuge of the rest of the band.
If you want to hear Stryper and get a feeling for some very good music go grab Against the Law or Soldiers Under Command. This CD would best be used as a coaster or possibly skeet.
Yellow and Black is BACK! ** 1/2.......2006-11-08
When I saw this on amazon I couldn't wait to hear it. I really like when a great 80's band makes a comeback. Unfortunately most have issues rekindling the magic that once was. Or musically it ends up sounding dated. I wish I could say it's different here but it's not. I have to disagree with some of the other reviews here. I was hoping REBORN would start were "Against the Law" left off. A more "In Your Face" updated sound with lots of catchy hooks. Unfortunately it doesn't. For me "Against the Law" and "To Hell with the Devil" was their best work. This ranks just above "In God we Trust" which was kind of SOFT for my tastes. I've liked these guys since the mid-to-late 80's when I first saw them in concert. Great band and great music with a POSITIVE message. Musically there's just not much new ground being broken here. When I hear other reviews saying it's "Edgy" or more "Raw" like "Law" was, I think I must be listening to a different CD?? Lets hope this is just an appetizer for what's to come!

very disappointing.......2005-08-02
Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Final Steppenwolf songs worthy of collection!.......2007-07-24
This is not the old Steppenwolf that we all loved so much. However it was still John Kay grinding out the vocals, along with Jerry Edmonton on drums, George Biondo on bass, and Bobby Cochran on guitar. This lineup was around for a long time. Skullduggery was released in 1976 with new material, and Reborn to be Wild includes the best of Slow Flux, Hour of the Wolf, and Skullduggery. There is nothing here like Born to be Wild or Rock Me but hey its the last recorded material from one of the best rock bands from the Golden Age of Rock. Buy it and enjoy it these songs are still worth putting in your cd library!

Uncompromising.......2006-03-25
This is the album that started my collection of CDs. Combine their uncompromising and profound lyrics (this isn't your average watered-down Christian band) with their unique and often un-4/4 sound and you have Living Sacrifice.
Living Sacrifice - 'Reborn' (Tooth And Nail Records).......2006-03-21
'Reborn' looks to be the fourth effort from this Little Rock,Arkansas metal/grind core band.It should also be noted that guitarist Bruce Fitzhugh has taken over the lead vocals. Some semi-impressive cuts to turn your stereo volume to 'ten' are the blistering opener "Reborn Empowered","Awakening","Sell Out" and "Liar".Might be too heavy for some.Check this CD out at your own risk.
Good Stuff.......2006-03-15
I really have overlooked this cd. Anyway, this cd is pretty good and one of L.S.'s best. I love how it starts off with the drums on the first song, in fact, I love the drumming on this whole disk. Lance isn't called The Machine for nothing. As for the rest of the album, it is all good and pretty fast, kinda like speed-thrash. I can't find one bad song on here. My only complaint about this cd is that is sounds repetitive after awhile. Oh well. I guess it comes with the metalcore territory. Plus, the enhanced version comes with the video for Reject.
Good quality stuff.......2005-12-27
I have listened to this album repeatedly for the last 8 years and it still stands the test of time. This is the first Living Sacrifice album after the lineup change. A slight change in their sound from their previous albums, and I actually prefer their new sound. It's more complex and varied than their previous albums. It's also not as "death metal" as their previous stuff, and has evolved into more of a thrash metal album. They have slowed down the tempo in some songs and have chosen to be more subtle and technical with their music rather than a pure onslaught of guitar riffs from their previous albums. These guys have some serious talent and it shows. A high quality album all around
Nothing even comes close. LS is KING.......2005-09-30
Forget anything you have ever heard about hardcore/metal music, you are about to re-learn. Reborn will blow you away.
There is only one word i can find that will describe this album: PERFECT. Every song is so intricate and so precise it blows your mind that it is so brutal. From blending acoustic guitars in the middle of a death metal song to the massive tape loops (used sparingly to good effect), this is the album that made Living Sacrifice "KING". Every song will get stuck in your head, and you will find yourself bobbing your head and drumming your fingers long after the cd has stopped playing. This is an absolutely amazing cd.
It is time to re-learn everything you know about heavy music. If you are a fan of the genre, and even if you are not (you WILL be, after listening to "Reborn"), you NEED to buy this cd. This was the album that introduced me to metal, and ever since then, hearing all the other bands, this album is still on the top. Nothing touches it.
