5 out of 5 stars Outstanding early 90's rock, as always.......2007-02-05

Just a fantastic album pretty much all around, Andy was destined to be a mega star but fate prevailed in the end, but we still have this brilliant album to fall back on. This is Shangrila, Come Bite The Apple, Bone China, Crown of Thorns are just absolutely fantastic tracks. RIP Andy

5 out of 5 stars Takes me back.......2007-01-24

I bought this album in 1992, freshman year in college. I was blown away by the force and depth of the music. 15 years later, unlike so much other music from my teens, this album still rocks. RIP Andrew Wood. You gave the world your gift and then you were consumed by it.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected........2006-12-14

When I bought this album I was a huge Pearl Jam, and had heard of Mother Love Bone in the past and knew a very little about them. Knowing they were the precursor to groups like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, I bought it ona whim. I was pleasantly suprised to find something that sounded completely different than what I expected. With Andrew Wood's amazing glam rock vocals, Gossard and Ament's free range song writing, and an altogether kick in the balls sound, it's worth however much you're going to spend.

5 out of 5 stars Mother Love Bone.......2006-11-10

Andrew Woods was a brilliant pianist and awesome singer. Mostly 80's sounding "Hair Band", which is excellent. Two songs off the chain; are, "Man of Golden Words", and "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns". Overall; this is an excellent CD with a very distinct sound. One of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars Mother love of all albums.......2006-08-10

Although I still have a greater love of things later (Pearl Jam), MLB are the clear inspiration. Andrew's lyrics coupled with Stone's riffs and Jeff's bass are what you can only describe as beautiful melodic rock.
If you love Jeff Buckley's sense of melody / ultimate beauty, and Freddie's sense of dash then you will love this. I will always state that I love listening to PJ/Nirvana/Reef/Live/Just Ginger/RHCP/Billy Joel/Radiohead more, but MLB will always somehow find its way to the top of my playlist through sheer quality and beauty of music.
Make no mistake, Andy Wood could have made MLB the Led Zep of our time. Awesome, what a boy: like Jeff and Kurt, let us just be thankful for what there was from him.

5 out of 5 stars Im not a kid its just easy this way.......2006-01-28

OK first of all i'd like to make something clear to those who seem to think you can't like Mother Love Bone AND Pearl Jam - Both bands are absolutely stunning. Andy and Eddie were two completely different people and it doesn't detract from either band.

Now, I will say something that sums up Apple and Mother Love Bone as a whole - Special. There is no other way to describe it. Sometimes a band comes along and is just so incredibly different, beautiful. stunning and tons more superlatives that don't even begin to fully describe the talent here. There is something almost mystical about MLB. Firstly Andy Wood was destined to be a star. There are just some people that were put on earth to entertain and he was one of them. However, he was not here for simple shallow entertainment. One listen to Man of Golden Words or Bone China will tell you that.

And none of this so far has mentioned Crown of Thorns. If you can get hold of the Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns version you will be witnessing one of the most amazing songs ever written. Im sory if I sound naive and gushing here but there are no words to describe what this song does to me.

5 out of 5 stars The needle takes another man.......2005-09-23

its just not fair, in a perfect world both Mother Love Bone AND Pearl Jam would have been huge, Andy Wood and co would have made the rock n' roll hall of fame, sold millions of records, not to mention Andy would have become a spokesmen for this generation, a man who just believed in the philosphy of love and making awesome music, a true poet of his time. This album is all we have left, a fantastic album, a tribute to lost potential of what could have been one of the biggest bands ever. RIP Andy Wood 1966-1990

4 out of 5 stars Not quite grunge, but definitely something more than 80's..........2005-09-15

Quick history lesson in reverse: Pearl Jam consists of lead singer Eddie Vedder, left guitarist Mike McCready, right guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament and a slew of different drummers. Before Pearl Jam was Pearl Jam, they were Temple of the Dog, a tribute band started after Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell learned of the death of his good friend, Mother Love Bone lead singer Andy Wood. After Andy's death, Cornell reconvened Ament and Gossard, and brought in McCready and Vedder to create the Temple of the Dog project. They released one album and Vedder stayed on in what became Pearl Jam. This, however, is where it all began. Mother Love Bone was the album where 80's music met grunge mentality and lyrics and a new brand of music was born. Without Mother Love Bone and the death of Andy Wood, there would have been no Temple of the Dog and NO Pearl Jam. If that wasn't enough to make you want to buy the album, then how about this: This album is solid. The tracks range from hard rock to soft ballads, and it's one of the more unique albums to be released around this time. If I had to describe it, I'd say it sounds a bit like a primitive Pearl Jam, with Axl Rose on lead vocals, but with a different mentality altogether than GNR had. Highlights are probably Shangri-La, Crown of Thorns (which Pearl Jam frequently covers), Gentle Groove, Stardog Champion, Stargazer, and the bonus track, Lady GOdiva Blues...in all, it's a solid album and if you're a Pearl Jam or Temple of the Dog fan, it's a must have. Grunge history...

4 out of 5 stars The most BEAUTIFUL Rock ballads ever..........2005-08-13

'Bone China' and "Stargazer' are astounding. Rock ballads without the pompus and silly pretenses of the 'Power Ballad' that was so prevelant at the time this album came out. Arguably the high points of a very strong album... R.I.P. Andrew...

5 out of 5 stars An album for the ages.......2005-05-20

I picked this CD up about late 1992, when Pearl Jam was quickly on the rise and i continue to listen to it, to this day. Andy Wood was a total genius and could have been the Jim Morrison of this generation had he not died before his band had the chance to become huge, which they certainly would have. a truly underlooked classic and a MUST for fans of the Seattle Scene.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

5 out of 5 stars The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

5 out of 5 stars music of great beauty.......2005-04-24

Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece from an all-too short lived legendary band.......2006-01-12

Shine (1989.), Mother Love Bone's first EP

With the massive success of 1991 albums, Pearl Jam's 'Ten' and Nirvana's 'Nevermind', alternative grunge rock from Seattle ruled supreme. However, the reality was that this genre of music had been around for a great deal longer. One of these earlier bands was Mother Love Bone. Originally formed in 1988, the band consisted of guitarists Stone Gossard and Bruce Fairweather and bassist Jeff Ament, who had all previously been members of Green River, the original grunge styled band. Coupled with drummer Greg Gilmour and charismatic lead singer Andrew Wood, the band released its first EP, 'Shine' in early 1988 and then their first full album release, 'Apple' in 1990. This band, with all of their potential seemed destined for massive success. However tragically, a few days after the release of 'Apple', lead singer Andrew Wood fatally overdosed on heroin. Following this tragedy, the band couldn't carry on and folded. From the ashes of this band came Pearl Jam and with all of their and other band's successes, Mother Love Bone was all but forgotten. So how much of a lost masterpiece is this album?

The work by Mother Love Bone in their short-lived existance is phenominal. The fact that this band was only able to record one full length album is such a pity - they had everything in terms of style, musical genius and attitude. The bands sound is somewhere between that of glam styled 80's metal and that of 90's alternative rock; it's a unique fusion. As an important point though, it must be stressed that eventhough Pearl Jam came about from this band, both band's sound VERY VERY different. So, don't expect an album like 'Ten' with 'Stardog Champion' - apart from the instantly recognisable style of Stone Gossard's guitar on both albums, their sound is totally different. A further point which I want to make is about the numerous comparisons people keep making between Eddie Vedder and Andrew Wood plus Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone in general. The fact of the matter is that it's stupid to compare both lead singers because they are so different in style but are arguably just as good. Where Eddie Vedder is lyrically introspective and has a much deeper, brooding vocal style, Wood has a more metal sounding vocal sound with differently styled lyrics. Pearl Jam are my favourite band of the 1990's but I see no need for this to be used as a means to be negative about Mother Love Bone. Many say Mother Love Bone wouldn't have been as revolutionary as Pearl Jam in the 1990's - well who knows really? REALLY? Sure, they will have developed differently to Pearl Jam but if 'Apple' is anything to go by, it will have developed and would have been damn good! The reality is, what has happened has happened, there is no point brooding over 'what ifs'.

That aside, what about Mother Love Bone's music. This band were one amazing and diverse musical unit. The album is full of different types of songs. On one aspect, we have harder rocking songs such as 'This Is Shangri-La' with powerful guitars, heavier vocals from Wood but ultimately songs with a fun feel to them. There are the slower more moody songs, such as 'Bone China' and there are some amazing ballads such as 'Crown Of Thorns'. The greatest star of the album undoubtedly is Andrew Wood. The man died way too young and this album is the showing of the musical potential that might have been. In terms of lyrics, Wood has plenty of different styles. Some of the lyrics he writes are a bit silly, but are pretty amusing and crazy but on the flipside he write some amazingly insightful stuff such as in 'Crown Of Thorns' and 'Man Of Golden Words'. His vocals though are legendary though and unique. Don't let the daftness of some of the lyrics or the sometimes 80's style to album let you think Mother Love Bone have a cheesy sound to them; they don't at all. The work stands alone as something out of the oridinary. In fact it amazes me how unavailable this band's music is in Britain - in fact Amazon is about the only place you can get this CD. I was fortunate enough myself to get hold of one whilst on holiday in the States where it is a 'bit' more available. The fact this band's music is so unheard of by many, even some Pearl Jam fans is such a shame as their music is so extraordinary.

So what about the editions of this album? The original 'Shine' EP and the 'Apple' of album can still be separately obtained but the best CD to get is the 'Stardog Champion' compilation which has the work from the EP and the album. The only missing track on the compilation is the hidden track off 'Shine', called 'Zanzibar'.

Now here's the difficult bit for me, giving the album's song their greatly deserved praise in my review. 'This Is Shangri-La' is the powerful opener from the 'Apple' album. After a slow fade in, this song breaks into a strongly guitar driven classic, which is very catchy with an energetic vocal performance from Wood. 'Stardog Champion' keeps up the hard rocking intensity from the first track. This song has a memorable verse and an interesting guitar exit where children's voices are interwoven into the music. 'Holy Roller' has an infectious riff and powerful vocals from Wood; his voice over mid-way through the song has some crazy and random lines but it goes perfectly with the song. Then, for 'Bone China', Gossard and Fairweather slow down their guitar riffs, and create a mellow backdrop to an introspective vocal performance from Wood. 'Come Bite The Apple' is a return to a more rocking sound, again catchy with plenty of nifty guitar work. 'Stargazer' follows; a slow tempo song with brooding but echoing vocals from Wood. Following this is 'Heartshine' and 'Captain Hi-Top'. Both are great songs which have a more distinctively glam rock sound to them - upbeat performances with plenty of energy.

'Man Of Golden Words' though is a simple song which is downright powerful. Andrew Wood plays a great piano sequence throughout the song whilst giving a heartfelt vocal performance - his line about the 'Temple Of The Dog' was the inspiration to the tribute album to him, made a year or so after his death. 'Capricorn Sister' is a rocking song, with plenty of crazy, random lyrics but it is a really fun listen. 'Gentle Groove' and 'Mr. Danny Boy' are both in a similar mold, a bit glam, a bit grunge sounding but are great songs with loads of attitude.

'Crown Of Thorns' .... ahhh what a song this is. In fact, I'd go as far to say this is one of my favourite ever songs. This 6-minute epic ballad is literally awesome. The riffs on the song imposing yet beautiful and melodic. The song is an insightful and scarily prophetic tale from Wood. In fact, in one of the verses he kind of foresees his own death. That aside though, this song is a powerful tale of love and love lost. The instrumental is moody, enthtralling and captivating and builds into an amazing climax with a great guitar and vocal exit. A song beyond description. Following this track are the songs off the 'Shine' EP, 'Thru Fade Away', 'Mindshaker Meltdown' and 'Half Ass Monkey Boy' are all catchy, guitar strong songs. Finally there is the extended 'Crown Of Thorns' with 'Chloe Dancer' intro. The piano opening is great and runs perfectly into the main song, which on this version is more raw sounding than on the actual album version - it's just as great though.

As you can see, I can't give this album enough praise - it's like no other. I really wan't to say it's an album alongside that of grunge albums 'Ten', 'Dirt' and 'Badmotorfinger' but it's just such a unique work it's hard to compare to anything else. That aside, you can't miss out on this album, it's a classic and one that has become sadly forgotten and underrated. Get this album; whether you have to search every CD shop in the world, get this album! This album is divine, legendary material.

5 out of 5 stars Just one correction..........2005-11-15

Not to nitpick, but under the section of Edition Notes, it says NOT to buy Shine... Its all on compilation... not EVERYTHING. There's a hidden track on Shine that is one of my favorite MLB tracks because its SO bizzare... Its called "Zanzibar" and is mostly Andy Wood speaking in trippy little phrases and recollected conversations while the band kind of noodles with noise behind him... its at 4:08 on the "Capricorn Sister" track...

"Do you come to these bars very often? Zanzibar! And things like such... It was Thursday afternoon, I was Laughing, Joking, Drinking fruit juice, peppermint herbs, Cap'n Crunch, things like such... she stood six foot three, she looked down on me and asked What? What? What hurts?"

And thats just the intro... Given its a novelty, but any MLB fan or even an Andy fan needs to hear it at least once... its worth it, if only for the strangeness.

4 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyable.......1999-08-12

The melodic hramonies and at times humorous themes to these songs are catchy and enjoyable; they may be unsung but once heard they will not be forgotten.....it makes you wonder why didn't this show make it and yet Cats has been around forever?

4 out of 5 stars quirky....and worth it.......1999-03-07
