5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-12-14

I love this CD, don't get me wrong; I like Celine Dion, even the pop albums that she has been accused of "selling out" with.
But this CD is by far her best in a while! It shows her voice as what it really is, amazing, with out needing any synthesized sounds. I enjoy the songs with Jean-Jacques Goldman the most; a great singer/song writer with a wonderful voice on showcase!
Even if you don't understand French you will enjoy the feeling and power put into this CD. I would recommend this album to any Celine lover, and for anyone who's not...give this one a try, you might find she does have "the pipes" after all : )

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant album but not the best of Celine.......2006-07-29

Excellent album but not as good as her earlier albums en Francais, in terms of the songs' melodies and lyrics. Yet it is still Celine.

5 out of 5 stars Celine gets better and better and better!.......2006-05-15

Just when you think she couldn't get any better, she did. This amazing album is one of Celine Dion's greatest works. I mean it. There is nothing even close to this, it doesn't compare to all of her other albums. I used to think that D'EUX (a.k.a. "The French Album" in the States) was her absolute best, but this truly wins.

Never before have you heard the rocker chic in Celine, but with it's premier single "Tout l'or des hommes" you see just that. She also does a country-rock song with some of her best vocals in her career called "Ne Bouge Pas!"

She reprised "Et, je t'aime encore" on this album, but this time in French which follows the english lyrics almost to the perfect 't.' The video is probably her least interesting of her career, but this song is meaningful.

One of the largest highlights of this superb album is the 3rd single "Contre Nature." It is Celine at her best, the Celine we all know and love. This ballad is the ballad among ballads.

This album is excellent! Buy it! Do you have to speak French to enjoy it? Non, non...ce n'est pas necessaire...mais c'est tres bien si vous parlez francais!

Merci, Celine! Je t'aime et je t'aimerai pour le rest de ma vie!

5 out of 5 stars For anyone who loves great vocals.......2006-04-08

I cannot speak any french so I have no idea what she's singing about. Doesn't matter. This cd is amazing. And what is great is that you don't have to be her typical fan to like it. The production seems different on this cd. It's more of a low key affair but her vocal delivery will blow you away. Check out all the 5 star reviews this cd gets. This is one for a true music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Strong...Very Strong.......2005-02-10

Celine Dion is on fire. This is an excellent contemporary pop album, one of the best (if not THE best) of Celine Dion's career. The singing she displays here is clearly the singing of someone at the top of their game. The usual cast of supporting characters is there (they're the "4 Types" in the title), and they give her the usual Cadillac treatment she deserves. Great writing, great producing, great playing, great fun!

Whether it's in Paris or in Vegas, this stuff just works. Celine Dion delivers maximum satisfaction with almost everything she touches, and this is no exception.

Do you need to speak French to like this album? The short answer is no, but it would help. By continuing to produce top-notch efforts like this, it will be only a matter of time before she takes one of her French songs on the American Adult Contemporary or even pop chart.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked Gem!.......2002-04-12

I would have no clue that there ever was a band called The E-Types if it weren't for a 1960s B-Movie called "Blond On a Bum Trip." Odd little film, mildly entertaining, the flick would likely have slipped from my mind if it weren't for the theme song, "Put the Clock Back On the Wall." Many of these low-budget flicks often scrape by with just the basic credits roll, but this film did list The E-Types as the artists of the abovementioned tune.

"Introducing the E-Types" is a solid CD by one of those bands that appear to have had a low key 15 minutes of fame. "Put the Clock Back On the Wall" easily steals the show on this release, and stands apart from the other songs with its creeping rhythm and psychedelic lyrics. That's not a knock on the remainder of the tunes, many which are love songs that bear a resemblance to groups like Herman's Hermits. They definitely have their own distinct sound though, as revealed in "I Can't Do It" and "Mr You're a Better Man Than I."

About the only songs I find myself skipping through are the number of covers they do of songs that were already hits in their day, including three Beatles songs. I dig covers, I dig tribute albums, but this band seemed solid and enjoyable enough that I would rather hear them crank out more hits of their own.

I wish this band stayed active just a little longer than they did, because this CD leaves me wanting more. And who knows just how long this release will remain in circulation? Let's hope it stays in print for a long time; just in case, pick it up ASAP. It's well worth your time and bucks.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good (and that ain't an insult).......2001-04-17

The other reviewers have mostly said it all; this is some excellent (if a tad genteel) 60s pop, and the songs--both the covers and originals--are absolutely top-notch. An interesting insight, though; this material, thanks to a brisk remix by Bob Irwin, makes one realize how much better American studios tended to be compared to British studios. The sound quality on the studio cuts is absolutely phenomenal!

And let's not forget the Nuggets-worthy "Put the Clock Back On the Wall," written by the Bonner/Gordon team (you know, "Happy Together?" "She'd Rather Be With Me?" The other wonderful songs they placed mainly with the Turtles?). The stereo remix here is nice, but is missing some effects of the old stereo (availible on one of the singular Nuggets disc) and the mono (availible on the boxed-set) mixes. I just felt that I should throw that in.

Anyway, look, listen, enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Get this 5-Star album now !.......2000-05-04

If you love great 60's British Invasion and Garage Band music then, you must buy this album now ! This american band sounded just as british as The Zombies and The Beatles; two of their biggest influences. Very melodic upbeat tunes. Why the single "Put the clock back on the wall" wasn't a big national hit is beyond me ? You won't be disappointed. Sundazed music did a great job of putting together this first time ever album of all of The E-Types singles, various live tracks, and unreleased material and in great sound quality.

Also, check out their new "Live at The Rainbow " available only as a (Beat Rocket/Sundazed) vinyl album, recorded in 1966. A good live representation of then up and coming band.

5 out of 5 stars This group was incredible, how did stardom elude them?.......1999-11-22

It is about time that someone finally put out a disc by one of the most under-rated groups that ever strapped on a guitar. This 60's group stepped out of a garage from the "wrong side of town" in Salinas, California and were armed with enough talent to make it in the big league. Bad breaks and poor management were the only things that prevented them from reaching what they obviously deserved. Thank goodness these tapes remain. If you love the British Invasion sound you HAVE to pick up this disc. The E-types distilled all of the best of the English groups and created a sound all their own. "Love of the Loved" alone is worth the price of the disc. Kudos to Sundazed Music for releasing an incredible package. If you have any more E-types please release it!

5 out of 5 stars Small Town Band Captures 60s!.......1999-01-06

Well-performed 60s sound that will surely bring anyone over 40 back to those "battle of the bands" dances in the school gym! Don't let the fact that you never heard of the group stop you from sampling this album. The E-Types had an interesting sound patterned after the English imports of that decade. You'll be singing along the second time you play the album! I especially liked Larry Hosford's "I Can't Do It" and Lennon/McCartney's "The Love Of The Loved" (I don't know why the Beatles never released this one!!!). The liner notes were fun reading, too. If you're a Byrds fan, don't pass up this CD!

1 out of 5 stars i hate this cd.......2007-06-13

I bought this the day is came out no doubt that it would be awesome. It isn't and if you want to listen to real Hopesfall don't even think about buying this album. It's by far one of the greatest disapointments in music I have came across.

4 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-09-29

Three awesome songs, seven good but kinda filler songs. Owl is the masterpiece of the album, wearing it's Hum influence on it's sleeve with the flood of harmonic chords and flowing melody. Manipulate The Eclipse is another track that wouldn't be out of place on the last mixtape you get to listen to before the end of the world. Champion Beyond Blessing is a Deftonesy song which eases up on the etherealism in favor of more of a rock groove. I think those three tracks are better than anything on The Satellite Years, while the rest of this album is generally inferior to it's predecessor. I can't understand people thinking this album is a major change in sound though. Is it less aggressive? I dunno. If I wanted to listen to something aggressive I wouldn't have been listening to The Satellite Years to begin with.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre shadow of former glory.......2006-03-02

Simply put, "A Types" varies little from the hordes of other dime-a-dozen emo records currently crowding the market. Yes, I'll give them respect for trying a different direction from their previous works. However, this new style happens to be the exact same insipid cookie-cutter sound that every other floppyhaired/lip pierced clone band out there is currently doing, only with a few spacey twists. The melodies and song structures wander and meander, in some places building tension and then abandoning the idea without resolution. Sonically, it's lukewarm- never really rocking too hard, never really getting quite as beautiful and spacey as they used to on other records.

I don't recommend this album at all, it is the lowest quality record the band has put out (which isn't surprising, considering only one original member remains). Instead, I recommend '...No Wings to Speak Of", "the Frailty of Words" or "the Satellite Years," in that order.

If you think Thursday and My Chemical Romance are the best bands ever, you'll probably like this. Which is fine, I don't care how you spend your parents' money.

Finally, Hopesfall should change their name. If George Harrison kicked Paul out after John and Ringo quit and then got 3 other guys to fill in and called the band the Beatles, there would be mass outrage and rioting in the streets.

3 out of 5 stars not bad but not that good either - 3.5 stars.......2006-02-06

this is a perfect example that shows that progressive music is better than the formulaic structures of "verse-chorus-verse" music. this is not a bad album, but when compared to previous releases by the band, it just doesn't begin to compare. i listen to a lot more non-screaming music than screaming music too, so i am not bashing the album for the singing - he's actually a pretty good singer (especially considering he was the screamer on satellite years) - i'd go so far as to say that the vocals are the best aspect of the overall change in sound. some instrumental parts are still awesome, but they're not consistent like past work.
simply put, when you've had such creative material before that demonstrates the band pushing itself to their limits, going to a simpler method of writing just doesn't work very well. the instruments die down too much and simultaneously the energy in the music disappears whereas for previous releases the energy was always present (and satellite years had a lot of toned down parts, just they were very well written, here it's a more typical toning down that so many other bands do)
not that bad of an album, just i don't think i would have gotten into hopesfall had this been their only material.
it happens(2/5): starts off good, then just dies. start and pause(2/5): same problem as previous song. icarus(4/5): good track, an alright video too. breathe from coma(3/5): sounds like it could have been amazing, though as it is it's only alright. champion beyond blessing(2/5): not that great. the ones(5/5): i like this one, especially the nod to satellite years at the end. manipulate the eclipse(3/5): not bad, not great. matchmaker's haven(4/5): alright, more screaming would have tremendously helped this track out though. owl(2/5): not very good. per sempre marciamo(6/5): favorite song. overall rating: about 3.5/5

5 out of 5 stars Why does everyone hate this?.......2005-12-18

I own three of Hopesfall's CDs (this one, "No Wings to Speak of", and "the Satellite Years"), and I honestly think this possibly their best CD. Many Hopesfall fans will automatically dismiss me for that, but I think one must step back a second. The one element that this CD lacks that especially "Satellite" had was the epic quality of some of the songs. Part of that is due to the fact that "Satellite" is a concept album. Overall, though this album is really well done. Listen to it all the way through and try, just try, not to get "The Ones" in your head. Look at some of the other standout songs: "It Happens" and "Icarus." This CD is not in the same genre they were before; it is now post-hardcore instead of being metalcore. For a post-hardcore album, this is really good. So, please, give this album a shot before you dismiss it. For those of you who are into the post-hardcore or so mislabed "screamo" scene, I highly recommend this album.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

4 out of 5 stars Whirlwind Heat = Playful, Fun, Abstract Music.......2006-05-17

This album's sound is a little more accessible than their past cd's. It sounds very influenced by Beck and Pavement, but it still has the quirkyness that the heat are known for.

"The Sun is Round" is excellent as they randomly list the abc's. There are awesome riffs on this disc, and the production is very good. "Reagan" is a really pretty song in which Benson sings it as opposed to the normal ranting.

Of course, this album should only be for people that will not get too offended by someone singing the abc's; "Now i know my abc's next time won't you sing with me"

This is a fun cd. But definately not for everyone.

This is the second release from this Sheffield, U.K., duo, who practice a decidedly mechanical, minimalist brand of techno. The music here is closer to the aural equivalent of an algorithm in action than what most people might think of as composed music. The sounds are principally one- or two-note keyboard hits and metronomic rhythms that are sometimes little more than a clicking sound. Track 7 is about as busy as it gets with two chords, a four-note melody, three percussion sounds and an extra note or two shimmering faintly in the background. The whole CD has a lot of fascinating microdetail, and it works very well as ambient or environmental music--for a little over an hour, you can walk in and out of the room, answer the phone or take a shower, and it'll still be there when you return, humming pleasantly to itself. --Bob Bannister

4 out of 5 stars interesting new direction..........2000-12-18

simply put, this is an ambient version of "cassette".. but that is a good thing, because SND are positioning themselves slightly towards a larger audience by making their sound a little (just a little!) more friendly and less monotonous. Imagine "cassette" with almost no kick drums, some pads (!) and some trace melodies. The second half is just fantastic. If you put that together with the best tracks of "cassette", then you would have one hell of an album.

its worth checking out if their last album caught your ear..

5 out of 5 stars DION explodes as a francophone artist........2003-12-02

CELINE DION creates an artistic goldmine with the help of the 4 talented male francophone lyricist (4 types = 4 styles).
On this release, CELINE relies artisticly on crafting a perfect song. Her vocal performance becomes the tool that polishes the texture of these songs. The lyrics of the tracks drown with sheer emotion. This is her best product (English or French) in a while. A perfect CD treat to relax & take in with someone you're care for.

      5 out of 5 stars 10 stars!.......2003-11-14

This album is brilliant! If you buy it, I guarantee it'll be the best album you buy all year!

4 out of 5 stars ýA Girl and Four Guysý = one of Célineýs most personal discs.......2003-11-09

I first fell in love with Céline's music from the early `80s when her songs were delightfully bubblegum-poppish (think Visa pour les beaux jours, Amoureuse, Je ne veux pas etc.), and now, listening back on that simpler era full of puppy love and upbeat tempos is a pleasant sort of Céline nostalgia, but I prefer the strong woman that Céline has become: accomplished performer, loving wife and mother, as I approach the same stage in my life. "1 fille & 4 types" shows us again that Céline's mature talent and creativity have no bounds. She is relaxed, refreshed and radiant here, and this is quickly becoming my favourite Céline album of the last decade.

Céline returns triumphantly to the Francophone music arena with « 1 fille & 4 types, » her first French album since 1998's S'il suffisait d'aimer. We find Céline with a new image: short-cropped, mussed hair, wearing a baby tee for Buff's Car Wash, looking older, wiser, and perhaps a bit edgier on the album's cover, surrounded by her four "guys" from the title: Jacques Veneruso, Erick Benzi, guitarist Gildas Arze and French superstar Jean-Jacques Goldman, who last collaborated with Céline on D'eux and S'il suffisait d'aimer.

The thirteen songs are woven from sheer poetic beauty, by turn gentle and pensive, declarations of love and loss and moving on. There are no belted love anthems here. Céline is at a point in her life that she brings gravity to the thirteen songs, makes the listener utterly entranced and hooked on each lyric (the songs were co-written by Goldman, Veneruso, and Benzi).

The songs occasionally evoke memories of earlier albums, such as Des Milliers de Baisers (Thousands of Kisses), with a drum intro reminiscent of Pour que tu m'aimes encore. As with D'eux, Céline and the gang experiment with different musical influences, such as a marked Irish rhythm and tinwhistles on Je Lui Dirai (I'll Tell Him), a touching declaration of Céline's love for her young son René-Charles. Ne Bouge Pas (Don't Change) evokes Delta Blues with its saucy slide guitar and blues harp, backed by a gospel choir. The bonus song, Valse adieu (Farewell waltz), is a folksy, five-part harmony, with acoustic guitar, and is beautiful, but much too short at a minute and a half.

If you don't speak French, don't let that scare you off from experiencing this wonderful album. The emotions of the songs speak for themselves, although if you do speak French or are learning, dust off your dictionary to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the French lyrics, which I consistently find to be more emotional and poetic than Céline's English albums. (Also, listening to music is an excellent way to accustom oneself to learning another language.) "1 fille & 4 types" is Céline's most personal, touching work to date and a sure crowd-pleaser for music critics and Céline fans alike. Buy it today and experience the magic for yourself!

      5 out of 5 stars AF - Absolutely Fabulous.......2003-10-31

Congrats Celine! Again. She made it. Another big success for releasing this new French CD. Debut #1 in Canada, and France. [...]Anyway, she has tried to sing a little bit more rock 'n' rolls kinda style this time. It's a good try for her, but I still like her ballad, and I highly recommend "apprends-moi" and "je t'aime encore ".

5 out of 5 stars Celine Is Back Again, Stronger than Ever!.......2003-10-25

Wow! What an album! This is seriously way better and alot more diversified than her two previously released french album "D'eux" and "S'il Suffisait D'aimer". From acoustic "sit around a fire" type songs, to western acadian, strong and moving ballads, passing by celtic and good pop/rock... It is very very good and not "commercialy" aimed. It dosn't have little "cheesy pop" like [...] and all... Deep lyrics, wonderful concept and... WOW!! Two thumbs up for Celine and her "4 types"! You will NOT regret getting this album!
