Product Description
The Eternal formed in 2003 from the ashes of renowned underground Melbourne doom band Cryptal Darkness. The Eternal strive to successfully combine the primal excitement and energy of a cohesive rhythm section with strong vocal and guitar melodies, and the symphonic atmosphere of layered keyboards. A wide range of vocal styles and intricate guitar harmonies gives the group its varied yet distinct sound. Their debut album for Firebox The Sombre Light of Isolation was released in June 2004, and received glowing reviews in both mainstream and underground media. The follow-up, recorded early in 2005, Sleep of Reason both defines and extends The Eternal's sound from their debut work. Less convoluted than its predecessor, it packs 11 songs into 59 minutes. Sleep of Reason was produced and recorded by Estonian guitar virtuoso Endel Rivers (Black Majesty, Vanishing Point) at Palm Studios in Melbourne, and mastered by Mika Jussila (Amorphis, Nightwish, Therion) at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki. Firebox. 2005.

What a great collection of original material.
Shame about the skimpy and sycophantic liner notes.

Album Details
Recorded Early in 2005, "Sleep of Reason" Both Defines and Extends the Eternal's Sound from their Debut Work. Less Convoluted Than Its Predecessor, it Packs 11 Songs Into 59 Minutes, which Vary in Feel from the Emotive Melodic Rock of 'everlasting and 'a Dream's End' to the Stifling Drag of 'beneath the Soil' and 'weight of Empathy'. Points in Between Include the Progressive Nightmare-scape of 'to Drown', the Dub Like Flow of 'in My Skin' and the Zeppelin-esque Ballad 'the Dying Light'. Whilst Mark Kelson's Clear, Soaring Vocals Are the Focal Point of "Sleep of Reason", and have Improved in Impact from the Band's Debut Work, the Eponymous Instrumental Track Clearly Demonstrates the Whole Band's Ability to Make Strong Musical Statements Filled with Both Emotion and Atmosphere.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done..........2006-05-10
The Eternal have managed to successfully top their last release with their latest effort titled 'Sleep of Reason'. This fine disc shows the band expanding their style while still managing to acheive a dark, atmospheric feel throughout the disc. This band has been receiving more and more attention as of late and with two fine cd's under their belt, it's not hard to see why.

Customer Reviews:
Who was the "real" Sleep of Reason?.......2007-05-11
The reviewer below writes that the "real" Sleep of Reason was a band from 1988 from Washinton, DC. The Sleep of Reason reviewed here was formed in 1983 and broke up in 1985. The recordings on the this CD are from those two years so who really was the real Sleep of Reason?
Interesting.......2004-01-09
To be honest i didn't really know what to expect..... That didn't matter, the mood of the cd is very much like a trip through the lawrence of arabia with an old gothic rock simillar to that of siousxie, (only certain songs, though)..... the best songs on here are probably the metropolis medly, which really feels like the fritz lang brilliance of the film. Then there is shelters are melting, I have no real reason for likeing it other than that it just sounded damn good.
I only gave it four because i guess when i heard it i thought that there could have been a bit more structure to some songs..
Any one who likes goth rock should at least check it out..
Not the real Sleep of Reason.......2003-01-14
Look for Washington DC's Sleep of Reason which released an album on TOP records in 1988. I have found copies of their debut record "Building 27" on Amazon and in used record stores. Worth the effort tracking this down. Features ex-members of Minor Threat and Top 40 Synth-Pop band Ampersand. Melodic power-pop infected with progressive musicianship and honed by a razor-edge (not straight-edge) harDCore undercurrent. Clearly a band ahead of its time. Not sure why they broke up. Former members have gone on to produce Tool and Dag Nasty among others.
Essential "Goth" Fare.......2000-12-08
Anyone who considers themselves admirers of this genre should give this a listen to. The best track is Moloch Machine, which never sounds outdated to me, even though now long defunct as a group. I first heard them on a Projekt compilation and found the music very intruiging. Herrera's unique voice (from Black Tape...) saves most of the songs which aren't as strong.
