Paw is one American guitar band smart enough to realize how many predecessors it can steal from. The Kansas trio isn't ashamed to borrow from Nirvana grunge, Van Halen crunch, Soul Asylum hooks, R.E.M. jangle, or Springsteen frat-rock--often in the same song. "I Hope To Die Tonight" opens with a shimmering wave of guitar distortion, but that soon recedes to reveal a first verse boasting an understated, arpeggiated melody and a romantic plea: "When I squeeze too hard, would you stop and tell me so--I never seem to know." That gives way, in turn, to a hard-rock chorus featuring hammering drums, blasting guitar chords, and a screaming vocal: "I hope I die tonight; everything's too perfect now!" This constant shifting of gears only works because every rhythm riff and single-note phrase that guitarist Grant Fitch comes up with is catchy and power driven. And Mark Hennessy is one of those rare singers who can scream and roar with perfect pitch and crisp articulation. Fitch's kid brother Peter is the drummer, and the band has gone through a series of bassists. Together they have loaded up Death to Traitors with 14 consistently impressive songs, including two low-key acoustic-guitar numbers sung by Grant Fitch and several loud, jagged rants, including the title cut, which sound uncannily like Pearl Jam. --Geoffrey Himes

If a band could possibly get any better..........2007-02-28

We'd have a revolution on our hands. Paw is one of those bands that never got the credit or promotional backing that they deserved. If only the right people were behind these guys, if the album were to get into the right hands, and the videos were released and played to the general public, music fans and critics alike would be praising Paw instead of Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Not that there's anything wrong with Nirvana and Pearl Jam; but take a listen to "Hope I Die Tonight" or "Jessie" from Paw's 1993 release, "Dragline", and you would find it hard to dispute my (and other fans') points of view. It saddens me deeply that a band like this is forced to split because their label drops them. And what for? Just because A&M couldn't hire the proper execs in the first place to skyrocket this quartet of kansas rockers into the main stream? It's a shame Paw had to split because of the strict standards their label put on them. If they weren't doing so well, put them under Soundgarden's wing for awhile. The fans and seattle rockers alike would eat it up, and the tours would be twice as explosive. After all, Soundgarden was on your label too, and they seemed to be doing pretty well around 1994-1995.

But that's the sad story of the music biz. I find it frustrating myself as a musical artist, because I too am not getting the support and backing I need because everyone is concerned about John Mayer and Blink 182 these days. But that's how it goes. More and more artists are seeking indie labels and making themselves known in the underground. If you're not concerned about names, labels, or popularity... pick this one up. If you're more concerned about names or labels, I guess that leaves more copies for the rest of us. Buy it, lend it to a friend, and get this good music out.

Honest Hard Rock.......2006-11-30

This band was incredible. It's so unfortunate that they got so pigeon-holed under the grunge era. This was just a group of guys making great straight-forward rock music. The lyrics were so honest from a man's point of view and had a lot of appeal on many levels. I see this CD is selling for a dollar used on here now. You can't beat that. Anybody who misses real rock music should pick this album up and put it into heavy rotation.

Another great album buy a great band.......2004-12-09

In 1993 Paw brought us Dragline then in 95 they brought Death to Traitors both great albums and still no one paid any attention which is hard to believe, especially whith Death to Traitors.
This albums has it all melodic guitar rifts, riviting vocals and songs that almost anyone can relate to, I mean who hasnt been screwed over by someone in their life and wanted them dead, who hasnt been in that perfect moment where they could die at that point and be happy and for some of us myself included have wondered what ever happend to our fathers.

The songs Paw wrote are some of the most relatable songs to come out during this or any other era of music, combine that with great music and you have what should be an overwhelming success but for some reason Paw never seemed to reach the mainstream of the 90's which is a shame, cause alot of people have missed out on in my opinion one of if not the best bands to emerge during the 90's.

Extremely listenable and melodic album from the grunge era........2004-08-19

Yes, "Death To Traitors" IS from the era of grunge -- but this album certainly is NOT grunge by a long-shot.
I managed to find this disc for $3 in a used music bin, and I snatched it up immediately, since finding a Paw album anywhere is an extremely difficult task indeed.
Obviously, what I got was well worth the money I spent -- and would have been worth much more. While Paw certainly doesn't try to challenge the listener, the band does offer some very touching, melodic and straightforward rock masterpieces. Songs like "Hope I Die Tonight" and "Seasoned Glove" offer up some truly insightful lyrics and some great music to match. While it's true that the whole "boo-hoo I lost my daddy"-thing has been beat into the ground A LOT in the last few years (Korn, Puddle of Mudd, Everclear, Staind), the song "Seasoned Glove" manages to address the same topic (an always absent father) but in a much more coherent and meaningful way than any of those newer rockers have done.
Practically every song on this CD is a gem, and there's not much to say in the way of complaints at all except that Paw never got the recognition that they deserved!
If you like your rock a little more rootsy and down-to-earth, then by all means "Death to Traitors" is an essential purchase that you'll find yourself listening to for years to come.

Great Effort by Paw.......2004-06-15

Death to Traitors had a very difficult task ahead of it. 1. "Dragline", their debut album was a true master piece and to this day is one of the most under rated albums in the history of rock music. How this band didint explode and become a force to be reckoned with after the release of "dragline" is beyond me. 2. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and Smashing Pumpkins were all in full force and the air waves were crowded with 1000 grunge bands sounding identical. Paw was like a breath of fresh air, their crushing guitars and amazing change of melodies really impacted a select crowd of hardcore Paw fans."Death to Traitors is not a bad album at all. The stand out track on this album would have to be "I hope I die Tonight", it is a heart felt song with great guitar riffs."Seasoned Glove" is a great rocker, and "Last one" is addictive. The rest of the album is pretty good, only towards the end, the album starts to sound a little tired and dosent leave you stunned like the almighty "Dragline". But, it is definetly recomendable if you want to hear a solid effort that will take you back to the mid 90's ...before all those horrible "Nu Metal" bands started to ruin rock music....This is creative and melodic heavy rock at its best. You wont be sorry.
