When Whitesnake broke into the spotlight with Slide It In (1984), a battalion of cynical critics predicted the band's success couldn't last, but Coverdale and company silenced all the naysayers with 1987's self-titled album, which rocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record was driven by the pumping rocker "Here I Go Again" and the tender power ballad "Is This Love," but the band's mainstream appeal might have had as much to do with their unabashedly sexual videos as with their bubblegum metal. The clips, which seemed to splash across MTV every 20 minutes, starred Coverdale's girlfriend and B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen, and highlighted her busty, scantily clad body in various provocative poses. Volume and T&A--a metalhead's wet dream. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:
The best album of whitesnake of all time!.......2007-06-30
The band is incredible here, the sound is "strong", John Sykes is at the top of his carrer, you must have this cd, if you don't like 1987, you don't like Whitesnake!
1987, a great year for the Purple family tree.......2007-04-16
First there was Deep Purple's "The House of Blue Light" from January 1987, and then, "Whitesnake" [the album] from March 1987. Whitesnake's turned out to be the more popular album, maybe the most popular album of the year because of it's commercial appeal, and the music videos that helped to sell it, but make no mistake it's a really good album. But Deep Purple's was even better in my opinion, a far less commercial rock album who's videos were unfortunately banned by MTV, which helped keep it out of the Billboard top 20.
Finally, I'm so tired of reading about the Whitesnake songs from this album being Led Zeppelin rip offs. Coverdale has already confirmed that a lot of the riffs come from Deep Purple rehearsal tapes back in the mid seventies when Coverdale was their lead singer. These riffs are "borrowed" from Ritchie Blackmore, not Jimmy Page. Case closed!
I advise getting both of these great rock albums of 1987:
*Whitesnake - Whitesnake
*Deep Purple - The House of Blue Light
Daves Masterpiece.......2007-01-03
After casting about early after leaving Purple in a fairly non spectacular effort with Northwinds Coverdale begat Whitesnake. Which put forth a number of very British blues based hard rock style albums. They sold out tours in the UK and Europe and still lost money. So like they say - go west young man!
This album is the fruits of a concerted effort to break the US market. It might be sneered at for thos reasons and often is by a still at times bitter UK press. But let's face it - the recording is power drenched, the band and production sound light years ahead of most other releases of the time and this album is noteworthy not only for the blistering feel of the tracks but also for the blend of ballads and rockers. With his wonderful set of pipes and great backing band Coverdale can attack stuff like Here I Go Again and Is This Love yet still happily turn around and crank serious wattage with the likes of Children of the Night, Bad Boys and the plaintive Crying in the Rain - a power ballad with the emphasis on the power and a tune above the norm for this style of song.
And that's without mentioning Still of the Night. Seriously, a strong so strong that it blitzed just about every other hard rock track doing the rounds from other contemporary bands. A flagship tune and there ain't no doubt - a track any band would be proud to have in it's armoury with which to lay waste to their audience with.
The downsides here are a) a slight reservation about the deliverate commercialism of the project b) perhaps a few too many ballads - sometimes affected by what territory your in as the tracklisting was not always fixed in concrete with this album and c) there isn't really a part c gripe! Overall this is a great hard rock album that crossed over to massive mainstream success. The riffs are pounding and insistent as are the drums and Coverdale is in fine voice throughout and the entire package reeks of professionalism. Even if the actual players on the album didn't get to fully enjoy the success of the album due to Coverdales revolving door policy regarding bandmates
Unintentionally funny.......2006-11-04
When "Here I Go Again" comes on the radio, i always end up listening for a few moments just because I am baffled about how bad some songwriting can be. Its hilarious that when you hear a line, you can predict the next one. I dont think Coverdale means anything he sings...he just picked the words cuz it sounds good...to him anyway.
In the Still of the Night is no better. The music sounds as if they intended it to be some brooding rock anthem. Its like they were trying to create some type of mystery and suspense building towards some rock zenith ...but when you hear the lyrics....all they are saying is "Im horny...gimme some". Hey, Im not opposed to songs about sex, but give me a break, dont pretend like you're telling me something brilliant.
All in all, Whitesnake is exactly what Spinal Tap was making fun of. I bet Whitesnake didnt even get the joke.
A must have for the pop metal fan.......2006-10-26
This cd needs to be in your collection if you're any kind of fan of 80's pop metal. Yes, there are sappy power ballads and sappy rocking songs and sappy everything. This cd is so sappy you're liable to get your hands sticky just handling it. This sappiness makes for one great trip down memory lane. It also holds up very well after all these years.

Whitesnake rocks!.......2007-02-20
If you loved 80's rock then you will love this CD, it is one of the best!
Good for its price.......2006-11-20
4 stars because
1-Great Whitesnake songs,
2-Great Booklet,
3-Good pricing,
4-Buy it to support Whitesnake (so they will release new cds).
1 star missing because
1-Same old songs (no unreleased material)
PS: The first track (Don't Break My Heart Again) has a problem, there is a jump in the middle of the song. Maybe it's just my cd, maybe not.
A really good one!!.......2006-05-25
I am a product of the 80's Hairband generation. I remember seeing Whitesnake live in Atlanta at the OMNI (its gone now).
These guys were a powerful force then. The energy and attitude were raw and just pulled you in. I remember the first time I heard "Slide it in", I was hooked. I dug around and listened to everything i could find of theirs.
This CD is a good one because it does cover a vast catalog of music. Yes they were MTV favorites but they were really talented musicians and Coverdale knew what a frontman was suppose to do.
Buy this CD and you won't be disappointed...
surely not!.......2006-05-11
Come on guys, get real! The only true definitive collection is a remastering of the entire back-catalogue. Saints and Sinners had all the good songs on it, as did Come An Get It, the latter probably the single best Whitesnake album of their early period.
With such a long history and varied members, one disc, or even two, is only going to diminish the greater achievements of the full-length albums. This is one rock band that deserves more than just another compilation that will surely just end up in the cheap bins.

Whitesnake were lumped into the "hair metal" explosion of the 1980s, but they were a classier, more classic rock band than most of their peers. So the songs that populate this hits collection hold up better than the work of many of that era's MTV-boosted groups. Vocalist David Coverdale took flack for sounding like Robert Plant, but his booming, confident voice is more temperate than the Zep frontman's caterwaul. From roaring epics such as "Still of the Night" and "Here I Go Again" to the blatant, sexy "Slide It In" to the memorable power ballad "Love Ain't No Stranger," the expected hits from the band's commercial heyday are included in this comprehensive CD, which skips over Whitesnake's several hitless discs of the '70s. Three decent unreleased songs fill out this 14-cut collection, which, much like the band itself, is solid and timeless. --Katherine Turman

ALERT ---- some of the best missing ----- ALERT.......2007-05-11
OK - I am by no means a fanatical supporter of whitesnake, having only brought my first albums 3 months ago, but this compilation is missing some of the best songs Whitesnake released.
If you do buy this album then you HAVE to buy Snakebite (1978). The reason is that this compilation does not include any of the following songs from that album (which are well made and sound great)
-Come on, Bloody Mary, AIN'T NO LOVE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY(cover).
Also the one catchy tune from slip of the tounge is missing (cheap and nasty).
You might want to consider listening to PSYCHO CITY (great white) for blue's based rock, and they are also the best led zeppelin tribute band on earth.
Slide it in.......2007-01-12
This CD rock's, I head bang all the way to work listening to David Coverdale.
Off kilter collection.......2007-01-03
This disc kicks off with Still of the Night - a towering masterpiece that every hard rock fan should be familiar with. Some gruops never have a song anywhere near this good in careers as equally long as Whitesnake. The real issues with this release start once this opening statement of intent fades away.
The issue with this album is the gutlessness of it all. From the insipid pandering liner notes waffling on about 'hard rock romantics' to the cover again featuring a familiar motif in it's design this whole album is a wimpout.
Take for example Here I Go Again, a wonderful tune, but hter they've put on some soft radio edit version. This is a travesty, was the record company afraid that all of Coverdales fans were now too old to handle the proper version?
And so the album continues with ballad after ballad - Is This Love, Now Your Gone and The Deeper the Love - only the first named being worthy of being on a 'Greatest Hits' album to start with. Love Aint No Stranger is a welcome addition however and is at least a cursory nod to pre '1987' material. Elsewhere we're treated - if the word can be used - to Judgement Day and a raft of 'previously unavailable on LP' ballad style songs.
Of course any time a band puts out a best of fans will queue up to moan about which was and wasn't included. But seriously the track listing here is so much a product of a jaded, cynical marketing exercise that it's not really a good representation of the band that produced a raft of good albums over the years. Seriously, no Slip of the Tongue, no Bad Boys or even a Children of the Night for a bit of a rockier and less predictable choice. Or what about Kittens Got Claws for some tongue in cheek Vai era fun. Or Ready & Willing form an earlier incarnation of the white megabeast?
Don't fall for this cash in. And newcomers should get an established fan to show them the way, not buy this. If you can't do that then get 1987 and then Ready & Willing if you want the earlier and more sedate blues version of this band. Or Slip of the Tongue for a paler version of 1987.
The first and the only real compilation of Whitesnake.......2006-04-28
1994 Whitesnake's Greatest hits was their 1st full length compilation with many GREAT HITS!
The first 3 songs is the most known hits of Whitesnake from their selftitled album the year 1987, "Whitesnake"
By the way, these 3 songs aren't necessary their best songs
No.4 Love ain't no stranger, for me is the best song from slide it in. Looking for love (No.5), this song originally wasn't included in any Whitesnake album, on one later version of the "Whitesnake" release with the name "1987" you can find this song and also "You're gonna break my heart again". Next comes "Now You're Gone" one of the best songs from "Slip of the Tongue" but finally hasn't achieved the success that everyone was waiting for.
The next 2 tracks are maybe their first hits " Slide it in" and "Slow an' easy", they are 2 extremely different kind of songs but and the 2 of them have their own way to keep the listener near to them.
At No.9 "Judgement day", has maybe one of the best intro that I've ever heard. A meaningful song that you'll love it.
"You're gonna break my heart again", comes next, as I already said this song originally wasn't included in any Whitesnake album, you can find it in "1987" release, one of the best songs of Whitesnake that never cames into light since this release.
After we have "The Deeper the Love" the biggest hit from "Slip of the tongue", the only song that was near to catch at least a little peace of the huge success that Whitesnake had with previous hits like..."Still of the night", "Here I go again" and "Is this Love". I think the problem was the new member of whitesnake that was a very known personality and I'm talking about Steve Vai. I'm not in the position to judge anyone but with him in a big part of the whole Whitesnake, Whitesnake changed their style.
That's why after their huge success in 1987 their comeback wasn't strong enough to catch the success of their last LP. By the way "Slip of the tongue" is a very good album and I recommend it to everyone.
Track 12, "Crying in the rain", I love its solo after third minute. one of their best solo's if it isn't their best.
Song 13, "Fool for Your Loving", One of my favorites, I have to say that when I buyed that LP I wasn't like that song very much since I went to a party of a friend of mine, this song was on the playlist of the party and with the volume to the maximum I listen to it step by step and I realised that was a very good song, from the whole song I love the closing moment, it reminds me something from a chinese song.
And finally no.14, "sweet lady luck", the new track, not something special but it's a good one.
Good Songs From The 80's.......2006-02-24
Loved this band at the end of the 80's and still enjoy listening to them now. Great memories.

Exellent!!!.......2007-07-29
It's an exellent live album and the new songs are pretty good but the style it's a little bit diferent as otherwhitesnake albums.
The Best.......2007-03-31
Live albums don't get much better. If you like Whitesnake, this will be the only one you will want to listen to. Live in the still of the night is just as good, but not as long.
Straight forward rock..........2007-03-26
Anyone's who's a Whitesnake fan or a fan of good, straight forward rock will love this cd...The four new songs are classic Whitesnake...hopefully a new album is in the works.
The rock scene today is in shambles and its nice to hear classic Whitesnake singing these songs along with the four new additions...Coverdale's voice is strong and in fine form.
This cd is better then most of today's rock cd's that's for sure!
A most welcomed come back!.......2007-03-25
If it's great for all the fans of Whitesnake seeing and hearing their latest performance, it's even greater to listen new material.
This is a "must" for everybody who loves Whitesnake regarding the different eras and musicians that join their talent with David Coverdale. If you like the Deep Purple, the Moody/Mardsen or the Sykes/Vandemberg/Vai recordings you'll have plenty of great material in this CD.
There's also the plus of the new material, that mixes the good old voice of Mr Coverdale (including it's famous "ouh ouh ouh" of "Kittens got claws") with great riffs performed by Aldrich and Reb "The lord of the strings" Beach. Although you can't categorize the new songs as "cutting edge" rock (thinking of Dream Theater)you will find power and comitment in each note.
The snake is rockin' hard again: "If you want me" remembers me that we need the good old voices return and redeem its place in the music business. Thank you Mr. Coverdale!
Awesome Cd!.......2007-03-10
I gave this cd 4 stars because the sound quality is not that good. The sound for Live:In The Still Of The Night dvd is better. This cd has lot more songs and are incredible.
Bottom line. This is a great cd which any fan of rock and roll would like.

The only with Steve Vai.......2007-06-28
I don't want to talk bad about this great rock band, I don't want to talk about Steve Vai in this record, but I want to say one thing, this is not the real sound of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of STEVE VAI, but the song judgement day is a great song, is like kashmir of led zeppelin!
Slip of the Tongue = a mixed bag of snakes.......2007-01-10
The knives were out for this one. To tell the truth, no matter what this sounded like it was going to cop a hammering given the attitude of certain elements of the hard rock press - especially in the UK. Additional to this was the fact that Steve Vai had been drafted in on guitar for a very hefty fee and there were justified concerns his playing style was totally unsuited to Whitesnake. Not to mention that the cover artwork was similar to that of the 1987 album (a ruse repeated for the '94 Greatest Hits) and this smacked a little of desperation.
So at first glance it's a case of low expectations despite the hope for another great disc as per 1987. And once you get to the music it's pretty clear that this is a hit and miss selection of songs. No complaints with the title track or the follow up cut Cheap an' Nasty. Or the remake of Fool For Your Loving which some felt was sacrilegious in some way. But stuff 'em! Now Your Gone is a decent enough ballad and Vai gets to flex his guitar in all sorts of unnatural ways in Kittens Got Claws but things get a little sketchy as the album moves on. It's not that Slow Poke Music or Judgement Day (an attempt to write another Still of the Night) are poor, it's just that they aren't great. And the more shiny hollow - or gutless, take your pick - production job doesn't help given the awesome power in the recording of 1987 which had more grit and fibre in one song than any three or four of the tracks on display here.
Not to mention that while he's a great guitarist, Vai proved the critics right by not really fitting the more bluesy hard rock mould of the 'snake. Not his fault, the guy is insanely talented in my opinion, but his style just isn't right for these songs. Though at least his inclusion did mean that the 'snake boasted (count 'em) two guitar gods for the tour. Which for some six string aficianados probably made it worthwhile buying a concert ticket regardless of whether they liked the album or not.
The real deal? Not as good as 1987 but few albums are. Some good songs are here but not as well produced and lacking the feel of a Whitesnake record, sounding like this was a job for all involved as there is just no feel on this album at all.
Love It.......2006-07-16
I have worn out several of these over the years. It is just that Good if you are into Hair Metal.
Steve vai rules.......2006-03-24
Whitesnake suck as a band every cd complete rubbish the only thing making this one great and i mean great is Steve Vai(GOD) on the guitar he blows everyone else in the band away, so if you must buy a whitesnake cd make it this one and then look into Steve Vai's work as its the best you will hear ever
Awesome music for rockers!.......2006-03-20
This CD is great. It has some really hooky tunes and the guitar playing by Steve Vai is phenomenal. I don't know why people give Steve Vai so much criticism for this album as I really do think his playing brings alot of excitement to the Whitesnake sound. Coverdale's vocal melodies are really strong too. Compared to Whitesnake's legendary 1987 album with John Sykes on guitar (which I also love), the sound of this album is a bit more commercial and produced. Personally I think it was a positive move even though most Whitesnake fans probably don't agree.

A terrific deal of great music........2006-10-20
This 2 disc collection basically just collects all of the tracks from 1984's Slide It In, 1987's self titled release Whitesnake and 1989's commercial/critical disaster Slip of the Tongue.
In addition to this, you also get the schmaltzy radio arrangement of the massive hit single Here I Go Again (in addition to the far superior album version), 2 tracks that were only available on the import version of the 1987 album (You're Gonna Break My Heart Again, Looking for Love), a B side (Need Your Love So Bad) and an additional track that was available only on the import version of Slip of the Tongue. Also, they included both the album and single versions of Give Me All Your Love as (like Here I Go Again) the album and single versions of this track are quite different in some respects.
The radio version/arrangement of Here I go Again kicks off Disc 1 and then the rest of this collection has the songs in chronological order.
All of the tracks have also been remixed in crystal clear 24 bit style. Add in some excellent liner notes that detail the history of the group up to and mainly including the years of these albums, and this is quite a deal.
I didn't really become that much of a fan of Whitesnake until 1984's Slide It In. In a lot of respects I think that it is their best album. 1987's mainly took what they were doing and adding in more of a commercial sheen that worked in spades. Slip of the Tongue failed because they just tried to duplicate the 1987 album, but even still, it has its moments.
I would recommend someone getting this before getting the 2 disc Gold collection but then again, with the Gold collection you do get 13 or so tracks from their pre 1984 era. If you're wanting more of a complete overview, go with the Gold collection. But if you want to hear the band in their prime (especially the 1984 and 1987 material) and can live with a few tracks that don't work as well as they had hoped off of Slip of the Tongue, this is a terrific double disc set to pick up for people wanting to re-discover Whitesnake or are just wanting to hear what they were about.
Ok, here's the thing!!.......2005-11-19
If you have all three of these cd's why would you buy this? Well it's simple really, it's called convenience. This cd has all of the major Whitesnake release on it and it only takes up one third of the space the others do. It does have a nice little blurb about the band in the liner notes and the packaging is alright but nothing fancy. What it does is save you space and the fact that you've got 3 great cd's in one is fantastic. If you're like me and have a ton of cd's?, any chance you get to reduce the herd yet keep your favorites is a bonus. This is why I gave it a 5 star rating, that and the music of course. Buy this package for convenience purposes only, otherwise you might as well stick with the single versions as theirs nothing new under the sun here!
If you Likewhite snake this is the cd for you!.......2005-08-12
I like white snake a lot, but my only cd from them is scrached. BAD.Since i ever had this cd i loved it because it was packed with tons of songs from them. Its like having 3 cd's in one! If your love white snake and you havent yet got this cd buy it!
Worth the Money even for this die hard!.......2005-01-05
Lets start by saying I own all things Whitesnake. So to some I may be a fool for purchasing this collection when I already had the albums contained and most of the B Sides(from greatest hits and others specials). However, the remastered quality of these discs made it worth every penny I plunked down.
Of course this spans the Geffen years of the snake, so it is the American versions and mixes of both Slide It In and Whitesnake 1987. Slide It In is upgraded greatly over the original American release(for any who may be confused, there is an international mix released before Slide It In was put out in America. John Sykes is not on the orig version and keyboards were drastically cut out on the american version.) It is a sonic treat to listen to "Slow n Easy" sound so great. David Coverdale's vice is incredible on the remasters. This collection serves as a better set than the 1 disc Greatest Hits if for no other reason than it has the real 1987 version of "Here I go Again" whereas the Hits cd only had the terrible radio version. And I love "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again" in beautiful 24 bit remastering. The bonus tracks for all three albums as well as just the incredible remastering job make this worth the mney even for a longtime die hard member of the Whitesnake Choir. It is also an affordable way to get these albums for a first time buyer. That is a win/win.
It is worth your money: three albums (and +) in one package!.......2004-05-01
Although not officially a "greatest hits" release, this double CD contains 24-bits remastered (and complete!) versions of three most known and successful Whitesnake albums: "Slide it in", "Whitesnake" (1987) and "Slip of the tongue". So, all their hits you might remember from the eighties are in there: "Here I go again", "Still of the night", "Is This Love", "Fool For Your Loving", "Now You're Gone"... Also, a couple of bonus tracks and B-sides add some more value to it -- being the thunderous "Sweet Lady Luck" one of my preferred ones. All this is complemented with a pretty good booklet containing some pictures, liner notes and information about each song.
On the (slightly) negative side, you might complain that it doesn't come with the lyrics. In addition, I think that at least one track with Vivian Campbell on guitars would have been a nice-to-have on it. But had it to be perfect? No way! This release is close to perfection and rocks anyways. It is worth your money and delivers the goods as you expect and deserve. Hats off to the record company!
To conclude: if you're just a casual fan (as I am) this is probably all what you need from Whitesnake. However, if you are a true fan and want to collect all their albums this double release would make no sense at all (probably you already own all this, and will hate feeling yourself compelled to buy the same thing once more). But for the rest of us, I think this is of a great value. I'm personally glad they released this. Five stars then!

Customer Reviews:
Coverdale woos women!.......2007-06-27
This is one of those rare collections that is pleasing to listen to song after song uninterrupted. David Coverdales' fabulously rich rhythm and blues voice wails, cajoles, howls, pleads and projects a lusty yearning for women that we love to hear. His unique testosterone loaded vocals are backed up by the phenominally talented cast of musicians that can bring very sophisticated rock sound rolling on and on. The lyrics are sometimes rather canned formula rock but who cares when Coverdale is howling! He could sear the labels off soup cans with that throat. Amazing man, amazing band.
Extensive Whitesnake/Coverdale package.......2007-06-25
THE BAND: David Coverdale and an assortment of players from the late 1970's through the late 90's. Most notably playing on one or more Whitesnake albums: John Sykes (guitar), Steve Vai (guitar), Adrian Vandenberg (guitar), Micky Moody (guitar), Rudy Sarzo (bass), Neil Murray (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards/organ), Tommy Aldridge (drums), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), Ian Paice (drums), Cozy Powell (drums).
THE DISC: (2006) 33 songs on 2 discs clocking in at approximately 155 minutes (Disc-1 at 77 minutes, Disc-2 at 78). Included with the disc is an 18-page booklet containing band photos through the years, a 4-page intro to the band, song titles/credits, what songs came from which albums, and Billboard chart success. This compilation follows the band from 1978-93 (with the exception of the unreleased track). Label - Geffen.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Trouble (2 songs), Snakebite (1), Love Hunter (3), Ready An' Willing (3), Live in The Heart Of The City (2), Come An' Get It (2), Saints & Sinners (1), Slide It In (5), Whitesnake (5), Slip Of The Tongue (5), Coverdale/Page (2), Soundtrack/Days Of Thunder (1), Unreleased (1).
COMMENTS: If Geffen's 18-track "Definitive Collection" from the same year isn't enough, this "Gold" collection will most surely do the trick. THE GOOD: The staples are all here - "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", "Fool For Your Loving" (2x), "Victim Of Love", "Slide It In", "Slow An' Easy", "Love Ain't No Stranger", "Here I Go Again", "Still Of The Night", "Give Me All Your Love", "Crying In The Rain", "Is This Love", "The Deeper The Love", "Judgment Day", etc. The deep album cuts are plentiful - "Trouble", "Ain't Gonna Cry No More", "Blindman", "Sailing Ships", and extremely happy to see the 10-minute live "Mistreated" and "Might Just Take Your Life" (old Deep Purple tracks) from "Live In The Heart Of The City". Liner notes are extensive. The songs are in chronological order so you can hear the band change over the decades - with the exception of the last track on disc-2, "We Wish You Well" (taken from the early "Love Hunter"). The disc space is utilized to its fullest, and the remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: Disc-1 rocks. Disc-2 has as many power ballads as it does rockers... but this was the direction of the band and its music. Don't get me wrong - this is a great set of discs - but my Whitesnake preference lies in the harder/faster songs. Only 1 song each from underrated albums "Snakebite" and "Saints & Sinners". Geffen hit the nail on the head with "Gold" as far as the track selection goes. However, there are a few less critical songs that could/should be here - "Bad Boys", "Slip Of The Tongue", "Hungry For Love" - and perhaps a few deeper tracks including "Child Of Babylon", "Whisper A Prayer For The Dying" (Coverdale/Page), and maybe a song or two from Coverdale's solo albums ("Restless Heart" and/or "Into The Light"). There are 5 remix/alternative mix selections here (many listeners may prefer the original studio versions... like me). The unreleased track is a throwaway... closer to a Michael Bolton song than Whitesnake. The negative remarks here are extremely minor in the scheme of things. OVERALL: A fantastic intro to David Coverdale and Whitesnake - if you're looking for an in-depth compilation, this "Gold" is the place to start (5 stars).
Whitesbake at it's best.......2006-11-04
Whitesnake Gold is a great collection of songs. It has the great oldies and the great new ones. It also contains some unreleased songs. It's a great CD set.
Great Music...Great Band...Great Vocalist .......2006-08-22
This is a great compilation album, what can I say I love Whitesnake & David Coverdale.
What I don't agree with Footpath "rockusa2002" review is about the drug dealer from Audtralia who is now being punished in my country, Indonesia. Everybody has concience but NOT for drug dealers! Death sentence is the best solution for drug dealers.
No more talk about drugs, lets just enjoy the great music from Whitesnake.
Whitesnake Gets The Anthology They Deserve.......2006-08-08
With the double-disc GOLD, Whitesnake get the double-disc anthology that they truly deserve. This collection starts in 1978, and goes right into the 90s, ending with 1979's "We Wish You Well." The early material (up to and including 1984), when they were a heavy metal version of Southern rock, is very much preferable to the late-80s stuff, when they were basically a higher-brow version of L.A. glam metal bands such as Ratt and Motley Crue. Despite the surprising number of alternate mixes here, lead singer David Coverdale's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was wrongfully convicted makes GOLD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Originally dismissed as a Led Zeppelin knockoff, Whitesnake, fronted by ex-Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, clattered around their hometown of Yorkshire, England for about six years before being discovered in the U.S. Their U.S. debut (fourth album) Slide It In (1984) captured the libidinous, restless spirit of frustrated youth, and climbed to No. 40 on the Billboard album chart. Eventually, it went double platinum on the back of the stealthy, pulsing "Slow An' Easy" and the propulsive title track. Shortly before recording the album, Coverdale recruited former Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes, who provided the band with the flair and technical wizardry it needed to become a contender in the big-hair, pop metal sweepstakes. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
A classic rock album with John Sykes.......2007-06-28
You can listen for the first time John Sykes with whitesnake, but you can hear the first led zeppelin influences of David Coverdale!
This cd is one of my favorite!
The peak of Whitesnake........2006-10-26
Slide It In represents (to me at least) David Coverdale and Whitesnake at their peak. While this album didn't quite set any sales records when it initially came out back in 1984, word of mouth spread about it and it reached respectable gold status here in the states. After the self titled 1987 album blew things wide open, people would go back and check out Slide It In and push it's overall sales to double platinum.
As a few other reviewers have already mentioned, this album was originally recorded back in 1983 and came out in Britain first. On the advice however of Whitesnake's new A&R rep with their new lable Geffen, David Coverdale would re-mix the album, add some flashier guitar parts on the tracks and re-sequence the song listing.
I have never heard the original British version, but most Whitesnake fans seem to agree that it's the superior version compared to the American version.
Even if you end up getting the more widely available American version, you'll end up getting one of the best hard rock albums to ever be made.
While David Coverdale's sexist at times lyrics can get kind of goofy here and there, his surefire delivery and amazing range manages to sell every single line with the utmost sincerity and authority.
The backing band is amazing as usual with keyboards by ex-Deep Purple member Jon Lord, seering guitar leads by John Sykes (on the American verion only) and thundering drum work by Cozy Powell. The bass work is a little lower in the mix compared to their prior albums to this, but it still is rumbling and moves things along quite nicely.
Slide It In represents to me a perfect balance between their blues/rock past and the much more commercial direction that they would go in with their next release.
Any discerning hard rock or 80's metal fan would do wise to snatch up this album as I feel that it greatly represents this band at the height of their musical prowess.
Original release please?.......2006-07-05
This album is great. Admittedly. But the original, British mix, including Colin Hodgkinson (instead of Neil Murray) and Mel Galley (instead of John Sykes)is far, far superior. The music haad far more balls and less flash. The mix, with Cozy's drumming, was like atomic blast after atomic blast on my stereo. I remember that well 20-something years later! Release the British mix. American releases always suck by comparison.
An underrated classic.......2006-03-13
This, in my opinion, was Whitesnake at their peak before getting less consistent with their next 2 releases 1987 & Slip of the tongue. It was where they combined their bluesy rock with commercialism to just the right balance. The previous release, Saints and sinners has also got that winning formula. Thats why they picked 2 songs off that album to make 1987 as popular as it was. Those songs of course being Here I go again and crying in the rain. Whitesnake were never as consistent as they were on this and Saints and sinners. It definitely would have been interesting to see what the follow up to this record would have been like had Coverdale's main collaborator, Mel Galley, not been forced out of the band due to an unfortunate accident (involving his successor John Sykes). Oh well. After that the guitars and overall production was given too much American hard rock treatment and its probably because of that that the majority of people remember the band for the 1987 album and being referred to as a "poodle rock, hair rock etc" band which isn't really accurate considering what the majority of their work consists of.
The Best Whitesnake Album ".".......2005-11-29
From what I have read in a couple of rock guides this album was finished in 1983 with Mick Moody and Mel Galley on guitars. It was later re-mixed for America, at which point Moody left and former Tygers Of Pan Tang/Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes joined the band. Sykes had recorded the excellent Thunder And Lighting with Thin Lizzy in 1983. I am not sure how much input he had on SIN but I remember he was the only guitarist to appear in the Slow N Easy video. Anyways, I have heard every Whitesnake album and this one is their best. The riffs are good, the solos are melodic, the choruses are catchy, and the rhythm section is tight. The production by the one and only Martin Birch is very clear and robust. I like every song with the exception of just a couple tracks so I won't bother going into each one. Just get the album if you don't already have it and enjoy good early 80s hard rock. Four and a half stars!

Heavy rock at its best for Whitesnake.......2006-02-09
A great album by David Coverdale (ex-Trapeze, ex-Deep Purple member) and crew. Two of the songs off this one helped put
Whitesnake over the top later in the 80's. But this one really
kicks butt, as well as their other early albums, (which are
their best), and after falling in the shadows of Deep Purple,
really made a name of themselves. A classic for the ages.
Saints and Sinners (1982).......2005-10-09
Whitesnake's Saints and Sinners came out two years before their first big U.S. hit Slide it In. Saints and Sinners is of special interest because two songs off of Saints and Sinners would latter resurface on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled release. Both Crying in the Rain and Here I Go Again were rerecorded for Whitesnake's 1987 album, with a few changes in lyrics on Here I Go Again. It's a shame this band didn't make years earlier.
Classic Whitesnake........2005-09-29
Whitesnake were the weakest of the post-Purple spin-off bands, mostly due to the pedestrian nature of the material and the lackluster playing of those involved. However, if one can get past the cliched lyrics and predictable arrangements, they'll find one of the band's stronger and more consistent releases here. Following a pair of mediocre albums (1980's Ready 'N' Willing and 1981's Come An' Get It)and a short break, the band reconvened and returned with their strongest set since the very good Lovehunter in 1979. While the lyrics are beyond embarrassing, the material is performed with an energy and fire lacking on the previous two albums. Despite Coverdale's valiant effort to destroy the songs with his juvenile lyrics, the band perform them with such vigor that they almost always manage to make them work.Included here are the original and far superior versions of Here I Go Again and Crying In The Rain. These were both re-recorded for their huge 1987 album, with that version of Here I Go Again topping the charts all around the globe. Both the originals are more stripped down than the remakes and are just warmer overall. This is a far from perfect album, but if you're looking for a good example of early Whitesnake, this is a great place to start.
Great Rock n' Roll!.......2005-07-21
This album rocks all the way through. I much rather older
Whitesnake than the harder 90's stuff. The production is
awesome as usual with Martin Burch at the helm. Can't say
enough good things about this album. Not a clunker on it!
Some of the new rockers could learn from listening to this!
whitesnake rocks.......2004-02-22
This is very bluesy, soulful, and rockin cd. Anyone who likes the WHITESNAKE sound of the late 80's and early 90's are in for a surprise because this cd is just plain hard edged rock and roll. This isn't 80's hair band this is DEEP PURPLE,ROLLING STONES AND AC/DC WRAP INTO ONE. A VERY GOOD CD.
