The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Disappointing .......2005-10-02

After creating Gothic, the ultimate doom/death album and metal classic, what do you do next? I don't know, and neither did the band I think. With this album they returned to a more spartan, stripped down approach. The extreme vocals have been watered down a little since Gothic, but the grunting is still quite good. Many of the songs sound uninspired though, too much of the same and fail to really grab you. Three fantastic songs; Mortals Watch The Day, Pity The Sadness and As I Die. They make this album worth its money. But the other songs are uninspired and fail to impress. Production is so-so, more produced than Gothic but certainly not sounding better; sounding hollow and flat. Of the classic period (Lost Paradise / Gothic / Shades Of God / Icon) this is the inferior album. Not bad, but could have been much better.

Decent.......2002-12-20

This is overall an unimpressive album by Paradise Lost, and compared to their later albums, it's even pretty bad.
But I still give it 3 stars because some of the songs are good, especially "As I Die", and "Daylight Torn".
The others are not very interesting, the songwriting is kinda dull I think, and the guitars don't sound as good as they sound on their later albums.
Also, this is still the phase in their career when their vocalist was mostly growling, and the vocals are mostly uninpressive here.
I recommend this only to diehard fans of the band. If you're new to the band get the albums they recorded after this one.

Paradise NOT lost!.......2002-06-04

I don't understand why I'm reading all of these bad reviews of "shades of god". I had bought this album when it came out, then someone decided they had to have it so they stole mine! So here it is exactly 10 years later, I've bought it again and I must say this album is HEAVY! "NO FORGIVENESS" is a classic ballad of despair that will go down in history. Who would dare disagree with "As I die"?, a haunting, doom filled masterpiece! If you don't own this--buy it today! I know when I first heard this album that I had to have it--it gave me "chills", that's how you know it's a good album. Put this in the CD player and crank up the first track "Mortals watch the day", and know you have done the right thing.

The most overrated Paradise Lost album...but still good........2002-05-19

Many Paradise Lost fans look back to this album as the "good old days"-- and good they were, with emphasis on "good." Unfortunately, many of these same fans who don't like what the band has done with their sound more recently tend to inflate this album in their memories into some legendary piece of artwork, which it is not. It's a good album, the work of a band still progressing and doing some brilliantly unique things along the way, especially with guitars.
The guitars carry this album, although much of the music is excellent. Music writer and lead guitar player Greg Mackintosh has one sorrow-filled and beautiful riff after another on display here. He and rythmn guitarist Aaron Aedy work very well together and are a joy to listen to. The work these men have put down on this album has spawned many imitators, and that is a credit to Mackintosh and co-writer/vocalist Nick Holmes. Holmes brings a despairing growl to the music-- distinctive, but not over the top or a distraction from the musical work. But it is the splendid doom-laden guitars that resound throughout and give "Shades of God" its legacy. "Pity the Sadness", "When Mortals Watch the Day", and "Your Hand In Mine" are monuments in guitar driven dark music.
As good as the guitars are, however, they can't cover up several faults with the album. The foremost of these is that the album gets overbearing. Nearly every song is a seven minute slab of melodic, distorted drear. It is beautiful, but in the way a walk in heavy rain is beautiful-- for awhile it is a wonderful and refreshing experience, even in its inherently gloomy character, but after two or three miles down the road you're left soaked to the bone and needing a different setting. After five or so tracks, the album drags even in the best of circumstances. It doesn't help that the drumming is terrible-- a sort of half-hearted, amateurish effort by Matt Archer.
The song "As I Die" is one of their most popular songs to date, and stands out as an up-tempo and shorter variation on what is mostly a trudging sound for the whole album. It's a great song, and when compared with the rest on the album proves that even in the depression and gloom of goth metal, lengthier is not always better.

Pay MUCH attention to Johnny Rock!.......2002-01-03

That Rock guy hit it right on the head. This is one of the very worst attempts at metal, or music for that matter, that I've heard in a long while. The drumming is lousy, and the solos are the biggest jokes I've ever heard. The songs are WAY too long (and I say that because it's too many minutes of bad music...personally I like long, GOOD, epic songs). In short, this band is even funnier that Spinal Tap because unlike Tap, they are actually trying to take themselves seriously. Spend your money on a Death CD, or try to track down Cynic's CD "Focus."
