In 1990 Ronnie James Dio released the fifth Dio album, Lock Up the Wolves. It was the first Dio album in three years and featured a whole new band. The results were very mixed, ranging from excellent to mediocre.

Like every other group Ronnie James Dio has ever been associated with, the musicmanship here is first-rate.The new band features drummer Simon Wright of AC/DC fame, and he fills Vinnie Appice's shoes very well. Bassist Teddy Cook is actually an improvement over Jimmy Bain; his lines are no less solid but much more interesting to listen to. Keyboardist Jens Johansson, formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, is not featured very heavily on this album but does a great job of adding texture. The new guitar player is an eighteen year old kid named Rowan Robertson, and he's actually very impressive, displaying a tasteful combination of chops and melody and coming up with some killer riffs. As for the vocals... well, it's Ronnie James Dio. He's at his absolute best here; this may well be his finest recorded vocal performance. This album is superbly recorded as well.

The songwriting is unfortunately where this album falls a little flat. Certainly there's great material here, but it's surrounded by an awful lot of filler. Interestingly enough the fast rockers, which are usually high points on a Dio record, are amongst the weakest tracks on the album with "Wild One", "Night Music", and "Walk On Water" coming across sounding generic and tired. One notable exception is the wonderfully paranoid "Why Are They Watching Me", which rocks. The songs which stand out on the album are slow yet heavy in a way that reminds me of Black Sabbath. Such songs include "Born On the Sun" which is the best track on the album, "Between Two Hearts" featuring some killer riffs, and the epic "Lock Up The Wolves". There are also a couple of interesting departures from the norm on this album, such as the blues-meets-metal "Evil On Queen Street" and the world-weary ballad "My Eyes".

Overall there's more good than bad here, but after four classic albums in a row (not to mention the classics he'd previously recorded with Rainbow and Black Sabbath) we'd all come to expect a lot more from Ronnie James Dio. This is worth picking up, but I'd at least get Dream Evil, Holy Diver, and Master Of The Moon first.

"Lock Up the Wolves" is probably my second favorite Dio album. It did not sell that well, got little or no radio airplay, but is his strongest work since leaving Black Sabbath in my opinion. The original Dio band is long gone by this point with only Ronnie himself remaining. Dio brings in a young 18 year old guitarist named Rowan Robertson to fill the guitar duties and he does so admirably. Former AC/DC skinsman Simon Wright is on drums, and Swedish prog keyboard maestro Jens Johansson (Stradivarius, Mastermind) is also on hand along with bassist Teddy Cook. This is the first Dio album to feature a truly great keyboard player and for me at least, the difference is humungous. The keys are still mostly in the background, but what Johansson does would be missed if it was not there. Much of this album is slow and brooding which makes it in my opinion the most Sabbath like of any of Dio's solo discs. Pretty much every song on the album is good and many of them are great. One of my favorite all time Dio songs closes out the album. "My Eyes" is a reflection on his career up to that point as he references Rainbow and Sabbath in a weary look back in time. The single and opening track "Wild One" is a rocker that ranks up with the hardest and fastest music Dio has done. "Born On The Sun", "Night Music" , "Between Two Hearts", "Lock Up The Wolves", "Evil On Queen Street", "Walk On Water", man they are all great tunes. Dio's vocals are in top form throughout and even most of his lyrics are well thought out and meaningful. I actually rank this album better than all of his 80's output. Many Dio fans won't agree with that assessment, but I think this is by far his most underrated album.

The ONLY issue I have with LUTW is the length: clocking in at just over 60 minutes, the overall mid to slow tempo of the album DOES make it drag a bit. So within that context, some criticism is justified. Other than that, Dio managed to release a fifth album that just barely misses the "classic/essential" category of the band's first four albums. The classic line-up is no longer present; the band Ronnie James assembled here is quite a motley crue: Drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC) fits in well, keyboardist Jens Johannssen (Yngwie, etc.) I would have expected more from, bassist Teddy Cook I know nothing about. Finally, we have the star of the album: teenage axe prodigy Rowan Robertson, who is quite worthy of the priviledge of working with RJD. It's a shame he hasn't become more well known since this album; he is an EXCEPTIONAL player. The sound on LUTW is much darker and bluesier than any other Dio album. And Slower. But again, don't let that scare you off! MOST of the songs are well written, produced and performed. For newcomers, I recommend Holy Diver and/or Last in Line. For established fans...shame on you for not owning or appreciating this fine effort!!!!

Lock Up the Woves is an incredible metal album!
Powerful, powerful, powerful...
This is a classic album that no true Dio fan, or any fan of hard rock and heavy metal for that matter, should be without.
Every song had electrifying guitar riffs that absolutely blow the listener away.
Although slightly below "Holy Diver," this album is absolutely breathtaking!

This album is as good as Holy Diver, Last In Line, Dream Evil and Sacred Heart. The slow songs are great and the faster power metal songs are great too. Ronnie's voice has never been better and Rowan Robertson is as good if not better than any other Dio guitarist. Robertson was only 16 but his riffs and solos are amazing. The best songs are Born On The Sun, Lock Up The Wolves, Walk On water, Why Are They Watching Me and My Eyes. Every song on this album is worth listening too. If you like Dio's other albums or good metal music in general than buy this album.
