5 out of 5 stars Frehley's 2nd solo disc.......2006-09-25

I could barely wait for this album to come out. Back in '86 or '87 when this was released, there was no internet, so the only way to keep up with your favorite bands was to read about them in the handful of rock magazines that catered to this kind of music: Metal Edge, Rock Scene, and Circus.

Like many, I was a huge KISS fan, but by the time I discovered them, Peter and Ace were long gone and the glory days of the hottest band in the world were, too. Though the remaining members had unmasked and we all knew what they looked like, Peter and Ace were nowhere to be found. I'd read an occasional story about one of them--Peter's guest appearance on a Black n Blue album or Ace Frehley endorsing Washburn guitars, but there wasn't much else.

I had heard that Ace had formed Frehley's Comet and was recording a new album, but that had gone on for years & years. Every time I went to the local record store (they really were "record" stores back then) I'd look for this album, and finally one day it was there. I was totally thrilled.

Joining Ace in the band were Tod Howarth (who apparently worked with Cheap Trick for a while), Pat Regan (who now produces albums), and veteran drummer Anton Fig (who has recorded with just about everyone at this point, including most of Ace's solo work). Howarth provided the more commercial side of the band (on tracks like "Calling to You"), and Ace's tunes sound pretty much like his '78 solo album.

Howath is a decent vocalist & clearly has a better range than Frehley, but I (and probably many others) would have preferred an all-Frehley album. This ends up being half Frehley, half Howarth. But hey, for a guy who waited so long to hear this album, half Frehley will do.

4 out of 5 stars Ace First solo After Leaving Kiss.......2006-05-29

This album has some realy good songs on it.But if you ever bought an album for just one song, then Rock Soldiers is it.
That song is the best song Ace ever did and is a classic in my opinion.Just hits the spot and his lead guitar in it is awsome.
Mind you there is some other good songs here, Tod Howarth did share vocals and did a fine job with his contributions.
Actually there is no bad songs here.
Except i dont know why he kept attempting remakes of Fractured Mirror.

5 out of 5 stars Ace Frehley is the last of the true originals........2006-01-05

When Ace Frehley left Kiss, everyone knew something was missing,it became obvious that Ace WAS Kiss, then after creative differances with Gene and Paul,Ace wanted to go back to the basics, straight out ROCK. because of contractual obligations Ace wasnt able to release his solo album right away, and fans began to grow anxious for some Ace. 1987 saw the release of Frehleys Comet, power rock at its best.
1.Rock Soldiers 9/10-Ace's anti-drinking anthem
2.Breakout-8/10-Ace's bandmate Tod Howarth sings this one
3.Into The Night 10/10-The BEST song on here
4.Something Moved 7/10-Tod Howarth's best song
5.We Got Your Rock-9/10-An instant Ace classic
6.Love Me Right 10/10-Ace truly jams on this one
7.Calling To You 7/10-An anthemic song from Howarth.
8.Dolls 6/10-Catchy but not rocking enough.
9.Stranger In a Strange Land 8/10-Simple,memorable
10.Fractured Too 9/10-A worthly sequel to Ace's original "Fractured" from his solo masterpiece in 1978.

Best Songs:Rock Soldiers,Into The Night,Love Me Right

Highest Possible Recomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Ace's High.......2005-06-14

For the song 'Rock Soldiers' by itself, the album (a concession to my age)is worth purchasing. The lyrics are spartan, but true to the rock n roll spirit. Which is how it should be. The result are lyrics that are honest, yet imperative with the adjoining hard beat. Ace rules!

5 out of 5 stars Not a shredder's album, but if you play and write songs..........2005-05-03

... this one is for you.

With this album, Ace spreads his cape and shows us his two sides-- the rock star and the creative artist. For the KISS traditionalist, there are songs like "Rock Soldiers" and "Breakout"; the more experimental player will like the quirky sense of fun in "Dolls" and the flowing instrumental "Fractured Too". The pop fans will love the Russ Ballard cover "Into the Night" (great solo, Ace!) and Tod Howarth's reworking of 707's "Megaforce", retitled "Calling to You" and given all new lyrics.

Even the songs that are a little "different" for Ace still work; "Stranger in a Strange Land" 's rhythm has some off-time drumming but still blows me away.

If you need a break from Yngwie, Steve, and Joe, look no further than this album for some great, diverse guitar rock.

3 out of 5 stars Ace rules!.......2005-10-10

This EP was an extra dose of Ace's 'Frehley's Comet' that showed his former bandmates who's boss!

However, if you're about to put the money down for some live Ace, look for '12 picks' which contains a big chunk of live songs from a concert in England. In fact, those recordings are from the Live+4 concert video (a great piece if you can find one) released at the same time as this EP. There's also live Ace on 'Loaded Deck.'

This EP starts off great with two strong tunes, then meanders off into a ridiculously long drum solo from Anton Fig...as if anyone who bought an Ace Frehley album really wanted to hear a drum solo, let alone one from the guy in David Letterman's TV show band! Where's the Ace solo? Still, the band is tight and Ace plays his ass off. A good listen, if you don't mind skipping through the drum solo! If it was Peter Criss or Eric Carr a drum solo would've been cool but the guy from the 'Late Show,' I don't think so!

2 out of 5 stars "I've come to my senses, it's time to make a break".......2005-07-17

I remember being really excited when this album came out in 1988 because I was a huge Frehley's Comet fan. They advertised it on television and I kept bugging the local record store about its release date. At the time, it was very cool because it offered a new studio track but, now that I look back on it, I'm not sure what the point was unless, as a previous reviewer noted, Ace had contractual obligations to release a live album. Also, their debut album was under the artist name "Ace Frehley," so, perhaps, they were bringing home the idea that they were now a band called Frehley's comet before their second album came out. Two of the five tracks are not even Frehley's Comet songs and they only had one studio album out at the time, so it seemed premature to release a live album. It doesn't even offer the singles from their debut release "Into the Night" and "Rock Soldiers," the latter of which was very popular.

The live tracks were performed at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom September 4, 1987. The first track is "Rip-It-Out" which is off of Ace's 1978 solo album while he was still in KISS. The two Frehely's Comet tracks are sung by Tod Howarth who has a remarkable voice. I usually liked his tracks better than Ace's, especially the slower numbers. His songs on their sophomore release Second Sighting are amazing. "Breakout" is not one of my favorites of his. It rocks but there is nothing special about it. Here, it is extended to over 7:00 due to an Anton Fig drum solo. Now how many people really enjoy listening to a drum solo on a record? Unless it is something really different and innovative, I find drum solos to be boring. The only thing it does is fill up the cassette side which only has two tracks so there is no blank space.

"Something Moved" is the other Tod-sung track (he also wrote the song) which is excellent. One of their best. "Rocket Ride" is an Ace favorite which is on the studio side of KISS Alive II. Before the track, Ace comments that it is about "entering a black hole" [and we all know of which 'black hole' he speaks]. "Words Are Not Enough" was the new studio track which, luckily, was not included on Second Sighting so us fans did not feel ripped off. It's a catchy little 3:25 song with some keyboards.

"Word Are Not Enough" is now offered on the Ace greatest hits CD 12 Picks. This CD also has live versions of "Rip-It-Out," "Rocket Ride," and "Breakout" so if you have that CD or are planning on getting it, Live + 1 will be almost unnecessary save for the Ace completest. There is nothing on this EP worth your money or a space in your music library. Some albums just do not age well and this hasn't. It is obsolete even for Ace fans since the release of 12 Picks.

4 out of 5 stars Ace at his best.......2003-12-29

ACE seems to be better LIVE than in studio, IMHO, and htis CD proves it. Great sounding CD with cool songs and lots of energy...just too g*ddamn short of a recording! I figure Ace and Co. were the opening act when this show was recorded (I could be wrong, though). And yes: that is Peter Frampton's bass player that we later hear on Frapton Comes Alive 2 and Frampton Live in Detroit.

5 out of 5 stars Ace Is Back!.......2003-02-04

After Ace Frehley's first solo album, "Frehley's Comet", of course he went on tour to promote the album. This CD of four live songs and one additional studio song "Words Are Not Enough" from Frehley's Comet proves to Ace's fans that he was back for good. Ace's energy in the songs and the loud guitar solos along with the huge drum beats make the album Number 1! The announcer screams in the beginning "Here They Are! FREHLEY'S COMET!"

The opener "Rip It Out" starts out with a bang of raw energy with great guitar solos by the spaceman himself. The heavy metal track "Breakout" from the Frehley's Comet album includes a four minute drum solo from Anton Fig. Tod Howarth also sings lead vocals on "Something Moved". The biggest song live is Ace Frehley's greatest hit, "Rocket Ride". If you heard the original studio version on KISS's album, ALIVE II, then you'll love it live. The closer "Words Are Not Enough" is a generally good song. This album explains the lyrics to "Rock Soldier" when Ace said, "ACE IS BACK AND HE TOLD YOU SO!" HE'S BACK!

3 out of 5 stars Worth a listen........2000-11-03

I think that Live + 1 is a pretty good album from Ace Frehley. There is a total of five tracks--four of them are live, and the other one is a studio tune particularly recorded for this album. All of the material is in a straight-ahead hard rock musical direction. The live material was recorded in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom on Sept. 4, 1987. The four live tracks are taken from various releases. "Rip-It-Out" is from Ace Frehley's debut solo album, "Rocket Ride" is taken from Kiss' album Kiss Alive II, while "Breakout" and "Something Moved" come from Ace Frehley's second solo album. I find all of the songs on this release to be listenable and energetic. The musicianship and production are solid and satisfying. There is also a tight and impressive drum solo from Anton Fig. Ace Frehley sings on three tracks, while Tod Howarth sings on the other two. The studio song "Words Are Not Enough" is pretty enjoyable, too. I admit that it would have been cool if a few more songs had been included. Other than that, I still think that Live + 1 is pretty good. Worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Underrated Album.......2006-03-29

I've listened to this album a lot over the last couple of years and I personally think it's better than the first. I enjoy all the songs except maybe Time Ain't Runnin' Out.

A couple of the songs could have been recorded with a little more oomph, listen to Separate on this album and its OK, listen to the live version on Loaded Deck and its brilliant. Juvenile Delinquent is also a little slow, when they played it live at the Limelight Club at the start of the second tour it really rocked.

The best song on the album I would say is It's Over Now, which is a great ballad. Insane is a great tune too.

Definitely buy this is you're a fan of Ace, just don't expect hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd one, as good as the first........2006-02-05

This is the 2nd album by the comet, and it is as good as the first one. His guitar work on this album is more mainlined but just as heavy, and well worth the money. Stand out tracks include, The Acorn is spinning, and Loser in a Fight. This album plain rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Ace Frehley is God........2006-01-16

Alot of customers bash Second Sighting for its commercial appeal, but the power ballads on here are some of the most powerful, catchy rock-ballads EVER. Tod Howarth's high pitched singing tone might annoy. but Ace has never sung a ballad ever,so I guess i'd rather hear Howarth's ballads than Ace trying to struggle through a softer song.Ace's best work is his Raw rock tunesbut Ace Frehley's raw rock n roll voice makes this album worth it.
1.Insane-This is undoubtably Frehleys best song on here it just leaves you beggin for more.
2.Time Aint Runnin Out-One of the more rocking ballads on here, still a solid track though.
3.Dancing With Danger-Ace at his rocking best
      4.It's Over Now-Todd Howarth's epic love song.
5.Loser in A Fight-both Ace and Tod sing on this one, probably one of the weaker songs on here
      6.Juvinile Delinquent-Powerful,anthemic,great song.
7.Fallen Angel-Another Howarth ballad, this one is one of the catchier power ballads.
      8.Seperate-Great song,great guitar work,great hook.
9.New Kind Of Lover-Tod Howarth REALLY lets loose his rock n roll talent here.best Howarth tune since "Breakout" from Frehleys Comet.
10.The Acorn is Spinning-Ace's fast, powerful, shredding guitar work reminds us why he's one of the greats.

Best Songs:Insane,Dancing With Danger,New Kind Of Lover

      Worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Overly Commercial and Misguided Second Album........2004-06-02

By the time this second effort from Frehley's Comet was released the airwaves were ruled by power ballad fueled, metal-lite bands like Poison and White Lion, sadly this album reflects that trend. This is even more disapointing when you consider the tremendous promise shown by the debut Frehley's Comet album.
A big problem here is a lack of involvement from the Spaceman, half of this album is penned and sung by Tod Howarth (who would be replaced by the next album). Howarth's songs tend to be mushy attempts at garnering radio airplay, ballads like Time Ain't Running Out and It's Over Now are prime examples of this. Furthermore, his high pitched approach to singing will surely not be everyone's cup of tea.
Another problem is the songs, which are not nearly as strong as the first album's. Lyrical content is downright embarassing at times (Juvenile Delinquent, Separate), and the music seems half hearted.
The only truly great songs on here are the fast paced Dancin' with Danger and The Acorn is Spinning, a mostly instrumental tune where Ace demonstrates why he is considered a true guitar legend with lightning fast licks and inspired soloing. The cd is worth buying to hear this track alone.
Frehley would rectify any problems within his band with his next studio effort, Trouble Walkin', by moving in a much heavier direction and replacing Howarth with the much better suited Richie Scarlet(who incidentally was a member of the very first incarnation of the Comet band way back in 1984).

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first Frehley's Comet release, but good.......2004-05-21

      Second Sighting (1988.) Frehley's Comet's second album.

Ace Frehley, formerly of KISS, is an underrated genius. While normally the only KISS member who gets any worthwhile credit is Gene Simmons, Frehley is equally talented, if not moreso. He didn't get enough of a chance to express himself in KISS, so he left the band (his replacement in KISS was Vinnie Vincent, later the frontman of power rockers Vinnie Vincent Invasion.) In 1987, Frehley put together a new band, appropriately called Frehley's Comet. Their debut was nothing short of excellent, despite being radically different from KISS. The follow up was released the following year. How does it measure up? Read on and find out.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, Second Sighting fails to top the first studio release from Frehley's Comet. The original album the band released with a masterpiece. This album, though, is only marginally worse - It's worthy of a four-star rating. There are some excellent tracks to be found here, such as Loser In A Fight, one of Ace's finest rockers ever recorded. From start to end, this is a solid rock and roll album, even if some of Frehley's fans would beg to differ. From fast and furious hard rockers to light and melodic power ballads, Frehley does not fail to please.

THIS TEXT REFERS TO THE ORIGINAL CD RELEASE OF THIS ALBUM. The original CD release of this album was not long after the original album release. The liner notes are done pretty well, featuring lyrics and cast/crew information. All in all, this is a pretty good "first issue" of the album, but I wish they would reissue the album. This version is becoming increasingly scarce, and a rerelease with expanded liner notes and bonus tracks would be great. Let's hope Ace delivers one.

All in all, the second release from Frehley's Comet is another solid album. Although Frehley's Comet differs substantially from KISS, they are another excellent band. Take my advice - If you're a fan of eighties power rock, and you come across this OR the first Frehley's Comet release, make the purchase. More likely than not, you won't be disappointed.

        4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - The return of Ace.......2005-04-11

        Frehley's Comet (1987.) Frehley's Comey's first album.

In 1978, all four members of KISS released solo albums on the same day. Of these four solo albums, lead guitarist Ace Frehley's was by far the best one. It beautifully demonstrated that the guitarist was an even better musician than the peers he played with in the band. And nine years later, Ace put together a new solo band - appropriately entitled Frehley's Comet. And in 1987, the new band released its first album. How does Ace Frehley's first non-KISS recording in nearly a decade measure up? Read on for my review.

The first thing I need to state is that this album, while excellent, sounds NOTHING like KISS. If you're looking for hard classic rock similar to KISS's stylings, you've come to the wrong place. However, if you're a fan of power rock bands like Whitesnake and Blue Murder, you're going to love this band. Two excellent arena rockers, Rock Soldiers and We Got Your Rock, can be found on this album. These rockers beautifully demonstrate that Mr. Frehley isn't about to be done rocking! Track by track, Ace serves up power rock tunes that, while similar, all manage to maintain a sense of individuality. And just so there's no confusion, Breakout is NOT the same song as the Bon Jovi one, and Stranger In A Strange Land is NOT the Iron Maiden song. The most obscure tune on the album is Dolls, a classic power rocker that employs keyboards and other elements of eighties new wave. Surprisingly this works well! It's my favorite track on the album. On Ace Frehley's KISS-era solo album, you may remember a melodic instrumental called Fractured Mirror that closed the album. Obviously Ace was satisfied with that track, because the closing track on this album, Fractured Too, is a follow-up to that classic. It's the best kind of melodic rock instrumental that you can do. All in all, forty minutes of rock excellence.

The Frehley's Comet discography is out of print, so I'm really hoping the record labels put the stuff back in print, And while they're at it, remastering the sound and throwing on some bonus tracks would be a good idea. Ace's non-KISS work all seems to be all but vanishing from stores... why?

Frehley's Comet, though VERY different from Ace's old band, is still an excellent one. If you're just buying this because you "like KISS", you might be disappointed though. But if you love power rock and/or you're a KISS fan with an open mind, Frehley's Comet is the way to go. Though certainly nothing revolutionary, this is a great album worthy of a place in any power rock library.
