5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars. Fantastic.......2007-07-25

I forgot how great this album really is. This is just good, hard rock. Shake Your Foundations is one of AC/DC's all time best. There isn't a bad song on the album. Fly on the Wall is one of the band's more underappreciated albums. Do yourself a favor and buy it today!.

4 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Huge.......2007-01-31

Ac/Dc was in a bad situation...after the mammoth sales of 'Highway To Hell' and then 'Back In Black' things cooled down with 'For Those About To Rock' and then took a nose dive with 'Flick Of The Switch' and the EP '74 Jailbreak' a lesser band would have cut it's losses and called it a day or made a drastic last effort to re-invent itself...but Ac/Dc didn't do that...they wrote some of the best and catchiest songs of their career and called it 'Fly On The Wall'
Many people hate this CD but those are probably the same people who hate Bon Jovi and Poison and Def Leppard for actually being able to write memorable songs.Jealousy is an ugly thing. However, that being said...Ac/Dc didn't sell out their ideals or even change their sound...all they did was write very catchy hooks and sing along chorus songs...lyrically speaking this album has the same themes that the band had since the beginning. This one is truly one of my favorite Ac/Dc releases...right up there with Back In Black,Highway To Hell and Dirty Deeds...it's not quite as heavy the whole way through as say 'Back In Black' but it makes up for that in being more memorable and easier to sing along..the CD starts with the title cut 'Fly On The Wall' which right off the bat shows they still can rock with the best of 'em...then onto 'Shake Your Foundations' which will absolutely have you singing along on the chorus..."First Blood" is more great heavy rock...then onto "Danger" which they released as a great video...(which also caused some people to bash them..but why can't a great band release a well done video, huh?) "Danger" has the same kind of creepy vibe that 'Night Prowler' had...a great song that instantly catches you...then onto my favorite off this CD...'Sink The Pink' truly a classic...a great song about the greatest subject in rock and roll music...women! This one has great lyrics, and a very sexy beat and hook to it...if you've ever watched a group of girls dancing to this song then you know what I'm talking about..Ac/Dc may not be the flashiest band in the world but the one thing they know how to do better then anyone in the world is write songs with beats for girls to dance and shake their butts to...and God bless 'em for that! "Playing With Girls" more great lyrics and great song...'Stand Up' a little bit heavier, feels like it might have been written back in the 'For Those About To Rock' sessions...great tune...'Hell Or High Water' more great heavy rock...and then 'Back In Business' this song is awesome and should have been a single...this one is right up there with any of the songs from 'Back In Black'...great heavy riffs..great screaming vocals from Brian...the feel is very similar to the stuff done on 'Back In Black' ..and then 'Send For The Man' which I think might be the weakest song on the CD but I've noticed that in a lot of cases Ac/Dc does save some of their weaker material as last...it's still not a bad song...just not up to the rest of the CD....this is a great CD full of amazing catchy songs without wimping out on anyone...in fact, this is the one I would recommend to women to start out listening to Ac/Dc even before 'Back In Black' because I think the songs are just a little more accessible ..but guys can love it too...it's one of my favorites and all rock fans should own this

the upside - the most catchy Ac/Dc album ever..great songs..great production..and 'Sink The Pink' is included which is great to watch girls dance to! That alone makes it worth the price

the downside - there is none

the bottom line - All rock fans should own this...it's almost a 'how to guide' to how to write heavy rock that is catchy without wimping out...to guys I would suggest starting with 'Back In Black' and 'Dirty Deeds' and 'Highway To Hell' and then move on to the rest of the catalog but to girls I suggest if you are new to Ac/Dc start right here...this CD rocks
seriously all Ac/Dc fans and all rock fans should run not walk and buy this CD...donutman says so!!!

4 out of 5 stars AC/DC - 'Fly On The Wall' (Sony) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-12-15

Review #48. Originally hit the streets in 1985,as I remember the very day(or week,at least) this album came out. Even saw them on this very tour. Once heard so many complain this album was boring, worthless, etc. BULLS**T!! This lp rocked back then and it still does. Only downside is that after maybe ten(10)plays within, say two month's time, you do want to put this CD reissue away, for awhile. I mean, everything does eventually run it's coarse. Tracks here that I'll always dig are the title cut "Fly On The Wall", the *ss-kicking "Shake Your Foundations" (when they played this tune in concert,I about lost it),"Danger",the humorous "Sink The Pink" (the video, anyway), "Stand Up" and "Back In Business". Maybe not 'Back In Black',but not that far behind. A must-have.

3 out of 5 stars Buzz Off!!!.......2006-09-05

Allrighty, as I said in my review of "Flick of the Switch", the vast majority of the criticism aimed towards that album is injustified. You'll do better to save it for this one (and even more so for "Stiff upper lip"). The traditional AC/DC formula for their albums (Mostly great songs + a little filler = Great Records) was utterly lost here. The result is, essentially, a filler album: a riff here, a chorus there, and that's essentially it.

The only TRUE winner here is "Sink the Pink", and thank god, they had sense enough to release it as a single. The other single, "Shake your Foundations" is O.K, but not trully great. Other than that, I personally like "Hell or High Water" and "Back in Business". That doesn't necessarily mean that they are good, it just means that I like them, but I honestly believe they are better than the rest: the title song in pointless, it never goes anywhere; "First Blood" and "Danger" are dull and boring, as are "Playing with Girls" and "Stand Up". But the worst of 'em all? Without a doubt, "Send for the man" has got to be THE WORST song EVER in AC/DC's catalog, a horrible song to close the record and a horrible song altogether. So, 3 good (not great) songs, one average song and six filler songs make for a boring, uninspired record.

That being said, the records is, for the most part, fast and heavy, and therefore, WAY better than "Stiff Upper Lip". This is a clear example of why self producing is not always a greay idea! Some comments have been made about the mixing of the record, and they are accurate: Brian's voice is buried under some very loud drums and guitars, and this is probably the weakest AC/DC mix ever. Finally, I've read a couple of comments where the reviewers have stated that "Oi,oi,oi, Shake your Foundations" is not songwriting. While I agree that this is some of AC/DC's least inspired songwriting, I CANNOT accept that statement, 'cause if I do, I would have to accept that "Hey, hey, hey, hey (ad nauseum)Black in Black, You're Back in Black" is not songwriting either, and I'm not willing to do that!

Bottom Line: the album greatest strenght is the consistency of its sound, which is truly powerful and hardrocking, even if the songwriting is not as strong as I would have hoped. And as stated on the liner notes included with this remastered release, the fact that the boys remained true to their sound, to their fans and more importantly, to themselves, really puts them in the category of rock institution. They could've tried to become glam metal, you know...Ozzy and Kiss certainly did!! (to name but 2 examples). So, if you are a diehard, you probably have this already and you find plenty of things to enjoy here. If you are getting into AC/DC, I suggest you save this for a latter occasion, and concentrate on other releases. And if you, like me, want to complete your collection, then go ahead... but I have to say this for the record: this record would not be on my list of essential AC/DC records...

3 out of 5 stars I give this album a 3.5.......2006-08-05

Fly on the Wall wasn't near as big as most of AC/DC's albums and for good reason. It just isn't AC/DC in their prime. And it had horrible production. But at least it's decent.

The album starts off good with the title track, a good rocker that makes you wish AC/DC could keep this up the whole album. The greatness continues with Shake Your Foundations, with great lyrics, a great riff, and a great chorus. This kind of music doesn't come back until Sink the Pink, arguably the best song on here. From its raging riff to the great chorus, it is 1 of the few AC/DC classics that came from this album. And while Playing With Girls isn't a classic, it is unexpectably good. It has a excellent riff, one of their best on here. Stand Up continues the greatness with a catchy blues riff. Hell or High Water also does this by combining a great riff with great drumming. The album also goes out great with the closer, Send for the Man. A great riff and the only good lyrics and vocals on here makes this a wonderful ending for this only average album.

And now as usual, time for the other songs. First Blood is horrible. It's the worst song on here besides Danger and has a bad riff and a bad chorus. And of course, then there's Danger, which is worse. The beginning is horrible and has terrible lyrics. At least Back in Buisness is better than these 2. It's not that good, but at least it has a good riff and a good chorus. Oh, what am I talking about? This is a great song. Nevermind what I said about it not being that good.

Overall, with the filler songs being worse than usual and the terrible production, this is only an averge album and AC/DC could have easily done better.

4 out of 5 stars A must for completists and Wellerheads.......2006-03-18

This nice miniboxset is a must for all you Weller fans and contains some bsides that are better than alot of his album tracks. Tracks like Fly on the wall- everything has a price to pay- a year late- the portishead remix of wildwood- and Heres a new thing are quality tunes that most artists would kill for. The covers album is solid but not great but the abundance of experimental tracks and remix material shows Weller isnt the "safe" musician some critics claim he is. Theres some acid jazz-techno- alittle triphop and ambient scattered on a few songs-something that he doesnt get credit for. The lower price makes this a good buy and a tidy way to collect all those expensive ebay oop singles. For the new or casual fan this may not be essential but you could do no harm by picking this up!

5 out of 5 stars Great pacakge from a Great Artist!!!.......2003-09-09

All I can say is, Paul Weller is GOD!!!
I have been a huge Weller fan since the Jam days, and just about everything he does is excellent. It is a shame that the rest of the U.S., does not recognize his greatness.
This 3 cd box set contains all of Wellers b-sides, and covers that have not been released in the U.S. . Many of these b-sides have already been released in Europe, and Japan, but not here.
See him live, when he tours the U.S. in October of 2003.

3 out of 5 stars Cheap Way to Buy Rare Out of Print Paul Weller Singles.......2003-09-08

Having spent a lot of time, money, and effort in purchasing dozens of the many Paul Weller singles on CD since 1990 (and not being able to find many that I'd like for a reasonable price) I welcome this compilation. Yes, there are many throw away tunes here including Kosmos but the covers and the live cuts all together in this box set are really nice to have on only a few long playing CD's instead of the stack of CD singles I constantly have to look for. This "Fly on the Wall" compilation is only for the serious Paul Weller fan I'd imagine. If you want to have a great Paul Weller compilation full of listenable hits then "Modern Classics" with the bonus live CD would be to your liking, or his latest "Illumination" album with the DVD that is quite moving and not unlike the early Rod Stewart "Gasoline Alley" album in its overall sound, especially the cut "Going Places." The reason this compilation of songs is necessary is that most of these are deleted and rare CD's and are on many labels. This box set puts them all together. Plus, Paul Weller will get the profits with your purchase that he richly deserves for three decades of fine music.

5 out of 5 stars Because the studio albums don't tell the whole story........2003-09-08

Fly On The Wall is a 39 track, 3 CD compilation of B sides, rarities and cover versions. The discs are packaged in a lovely white box. Also enclosed is a handsome booklet that features photographs and liner notes by former NME scribe John Harris.

As you can tell from the tracklisting above, Fly On The Wall is an essential purchase for the Paul Weller fan. Everything included here is of a very high standard. I'm particularily fond of the remixes by the likes of Brendan Lynch, Portishead and Noonday Underground (although for some odd reason Lynch's wonderful rearrangement of Sunflower is absent).

There are a few unadventurous souls out there who feel Paul Weller should still be fronting The Jam (see the other "reviews" for proof), in the meantime the rest of us will sit back and enjoy a boxset that contains some of his best ever material.

4 out of 5 stars Essential collection for fans of post-SC, Post ýJam period.......2003-09-05

Fly of the wall does just what is says, collects the b sides and extra tracks from the endless stream of singles Weller released in his "solo" career. IMHO the quality slides downhill from the first few releases, but being a huge SC fan and a (not as big) Jam fan I found most of Weller's mid to late 90s stuff not much fun and essentially forgettable Cream/Oasis style guitar work outs anyway, so I am baised.

The covers album is ok, but only serves to highlight how few good songs Weller composed himself in the 90s. While few of the cover songs strike me the way that "You Do Something To Me" pretty much all of them are better than the other Weller album tracks from the period. (One would expect that from a cover, otherwise why choose to cover it, but still)...

Fans are gonna need this set (especially since some of the mid 90s CD singles from Weller have "turned" and are essentially unplayable I find) but the general public should take a pass. If you must own a Weller solo album stick with his most recent or his best of.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AC/DC in a slump? definitely NOT! an underrated classic!.......2005-09-14

Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that AC/DC were in the midst of a slump while recording the "Fly On The Wall" album which was originally released in June of 1985. The band had taken over the production reins for their 1983 predecessor "Flick of the Switch", and they elected once again to not bring in an outside producer for "Fly..." which was produced by Angus & Malcolm. And as strong of an album as "Flick..." is, this one is even better.

Yes, Brian Johnson's voice had lost something by this point--his vocals here just don't soar and rattle off the walls the way they do on the previous couple albums. Angus and Malcolm seemingly realized this, and responded by burying it in the mix somewhat, as well as using a lot of echo effects, and although Johnson's screams are occasionally a bit grating, it's a very minor quibble--he still adds greatly to the excitement level of the album.

The album opening title track doesn't get the record off to a promising start--it's a real messy bashfest of a song. Once it passes though, you're in for a hell of an exciting ride.

Angus and Malcolm did a great job producing this--the guitars smoke, and the crisp-yet-booming drum sound works great. Sure, Simon Wright's drumming is about as no-frills as it can get, but come on--fancy drumming has never exactly been a key factor with AC/DC.

Mid-tempo hard rockers really don't come any better than "Sink The Pink"--the intro has a great eighth-note guitar line from Angus that makes the arrivial of the chorus riff all the more thrilling, and the whole tune is brilliantly structured for maximum ass-kicking impact. "Hell Or High Water" and "Back In Business" are also mid-tempo ass-kickers with irresistible riffs. "Shake Your Foundations" has that ultra-catchy singalong chorus. The stomping "First Blood" has an irresistibly 'dumb' core riff that'll get you banging your head in no time. The slow-paced "Danger" has an amusingly threatening vibe and is a ton of fun. The whomping "Playing With Girls" is an explosive funked-up boogie with a perfectly placed and gloriously unhinged Johnson scream at 1:58 of the track. The bluesy "Stand Up" is cleverly constructed and has an intoxicating, anthemic chorus. The album closes with the irresistibly moody stomper "Send For The Man".

In short, I'm really blown away by this album--it's definitely one of AC/DC's best. I certainly wasn't expecting it to be this great, but it is. Angus and Malcolm clearly didn't give a damn about the trends in hard rock/ heavy metal at the time, and more power to them. "Fly..." has none of the lame, commercialized cockrock sound that turns up on the "Highway To Hell" and "Back In Black" albums. If you're a hard rock lover, you can't go wrong with "Fly On The Wall".

    2 out of 5 stars A disappointing album from AC/DC's mid-80s slump.......2004-08-17

This album sits alongside AC/DC's previous effort, "Flick Of The Switch", as their least interesting.

There are two really good songs on "Fly On The Wall", namely "Sink The Pink" and "Shake Your Foundations" (both of which can be found on the soundtrack album "Who Made Who"). The rest is cookie-cutter mediocrity...the lyrics seem forced and cliched, the music is largely uninspired, lacking the memorable hooks and riffs of AC/DC's best songs, and Brian Johnson's voice is mixed too far into the background.

"Fly On The Wall" was a commercial and critical failure, and it's not hard to understand why. It's steeped in mediocrity, and comparing it to "Highway To Hell", "The Razors Edge", "Let There Be Rock" and the greatest hard rock album ever, "Back In Black", makes it look like even more of a disappointment.
    Mostly for completists.

    5 out of 5 stars No, it's really good-it rocks.......2004-03-15

5 out of 5 stars SINK THE PINK..........THEN BUY THIS ALBUM.......2004-12-13

FLY ON THE WALL.....so underrated. This album is AC/DC still rocking right through the 80's hair metal fiasco and it's awesome. It's standout tracks are FLY ON THE WALL, SINK THE PINK, SHAKE YOUR FOUNDATIONS, AND DANGER. Great album from a great band.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as usual but still no reason to trash it.......2004-12-04

I bought this album expecting it to be lame, but I was suprised to find that it's a decent album. Yes, decent. Not a classic by any strech. For starters, Brian's voice is going, and the production suffers from an over-abundance of reverb which makes it a fairly headachy-sounding album. The watered-down production is my main gripe, because it sucks a lot of energy out of some really good songs. The boring "Danger", the macho-generic "Playing With Girls" (featuring the poorest lyrics ever written by this band), "Hell Or High Water", and "Back in Business" are just dreadful. "First Blood" is a little mediocre, but is just catchy, and the solo is great. The real classics though, have to be the incredible "Shake Your Foundations", "Stand Up", "Send For the Man" and one of their best songs since the days of Back in Black, "Sink the Pink". These songs are what makes the album. Buy it if you already have the classics and you don't mind filler, and hey don't forget to get your ass kicked by "Sink the Pink" and "Shake Your Foundations".

4 out of 5 stars Brian Johnson isn't all that bad.......2004-06-12

First of all im writing this review to defend Brain johnson, im sick of people critizing him and his voice. He is not bad at all, when you listen to him sing keep in mind that he was about 40 when he recorded this, so compared to Bon he is old. And music wise you cant compare them, the ac/dc sound was changed after Bon died, not just the vocals. Also try to imagine Ac/dc with some one besides bon or brian, its hard isn't it, the only person i can imagine is Dan McCafferty of Nazareth. Don't get me wrong im a huge fan of bon and like him more then brian, i even did my 8th grade english project on Bon, it was about 6 pages long. Anyway this album is basic solid catchy 80's ac/dc

      5 out of 5 stars wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-12-03

this is is one of my favorite ac/dc cds.it has a certain type of rawness to it.the best songs are fly on the wall, stand up,and send the man.i think this cd is way to underated it has been called every bad name out there bottom of the barrel, the worst album by the boys yet,and the one i cant understand is that brian johnsons voice is gone,ha it is as stong as it was with back in black.i love it.i also think flick of the switch, blow up your video, and for those about to rock are very cool and underated.
