Customer Reviews:
Definitely underrated and definitely worth the $2 it's selling for used.......2007-05-13
I agree 100% with the lead review except for the part about Death To Traitors, which I thought was a great follow up. At a selling price of $2 this is probably the best buy on Amazon.
Could the best album of 90's be from a band of complete unknowns? .......2006-08-10
Well, maybe not complete unknown, but close enough. But when I say best I do mean best. I think Dragline could go toe-to-toe with the biggest releases of the 90's and come out on top most, if not all the time. I heard the song "Couldn't Know" on some long forgotten skate TV show back in the early 90's. The chorus about the "most beautiful thing I've ever seen" completely floored me. I bought the cassette as soon as I could just for that song, and was blown away by the rest of the album. While most 90's bands were drowning in either depression and/or self-loathing, or trying much too hard to be "different," Paw was too honest to play up to that. Maybe that's why they never recieved the fame and recognition they deserve. Instead, Paw expressed the beauty, sadness, and presence of the divine that can be found in everday salt-of-the-earth life--and in the process make music emotionally as powerful and real as any of the "big" 90's bands . . . if not more so. The heart-tugging love and loyalty of a dog, having your heart broken by a beautiful girl, or memories of times spent as a child with your father driving around at night out in the country are some of the topics covered on Dragline. Paw had a gift for finding the right melodic twist to work with the perfect lyric that could completely deliver the whole emotional package of a song. As some other reviewer noted, Paw sounded like Lynyrd Skynyrd crossed with Soundgarden. I think that is a good description. But I would also add there are bits of Neil Young and Led Zeppelin in there as well--in how they mixed beautiful, gentle acoustic passages alongside raging guitar rock. The lyrics are brilliant, free of posturing, soulful, and down to earth. The man was a true poet. And if the chorus of "Couldn't Know" doesn't knock you out and make you feel glad to be alive like it did me, then the brilliant, goosebump inducing steel-guitar break in "Jessie" definitley will. I'm so glad to see by other reviews of this record, that Dragline touched other people like it did me.
Unbelievable.......2006-05-14
Paw is one of the best bands that were victimized by the "Grunge" label and subsequently phased out when Gen X'rs decided that they were suddenly hippies.
Dragline is substatial achievement. There are few albums that so honestly portray the angst of growing up angry in the cornfields. Jessie is one of the best singles of all-time.
Years from now some executive is going to dig this album out of the archives and re-release them as a lost master. Buy this album if you know what's good for you.
Old Bushmills, Beer & Wine.......2006-05-06
Hands down......The best cd ever recorded. Miss this band dearly. If you have not heard it.....I am sorry....It rules!
Still good after all these years...........2006-04-12
I was going through some of my old CDs the other day and came across this one. I haven't listened to it in years so I thought I would pop it in. Boy did it bring back some memories. I lived in Kansas City in the early 90s when grunge was at its heyday (live in Seattle now...oh well). Paw made the rounds in some of the local bars there and in Lawrence. I saw them live at a little place called the Grand Emporium - what a kicka** show! I wonder what those boys are doing now?
Anyway, if you want some hard driving, rocking good music, pick this one up.
