The definitive progressive metal song, and some great covers too!.......2007-06-28
I first discovered Dream Theater back in 1993 when the Pull Me Under video was in rotation on MTV. I rushed out and bought Images and Words, an album that completely changed the way I listened to music. For whatever reason, the band's follow-up album Awake just didn't resonate with me like Images did, but their 1996 EP A Change of Seasons reminded me once again why Dream Theater is such an amazing band.
Quite simply, A Change of Seasons is the greatest progressive metal song ever recorded. I know that's a bold statement, but I just can't see anyone listening to this 23-minute epic and coming away unimpressed. A Change of Seasons really sums up everything that Dream Theater is all about. It combines an epic song structure, brilliant technical musical performances, emotional and insightful lyrics into an epic odyssey through the various stages of life. It's one of the most ambitious metal songs ever recorded, and as technical and progressive as it may get, it never ventures into the self-indulgent excesses that often plague the progressive rock and metal genres. The instrumental sections aren't excuses to show off, but rather essential chapters in the overall story that maintain the mood and emotion of the songs in a way that mere words could never do.
I know some will argue that later Dream Theater epics like the title track from Octavarium or the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence suite are superior to A Change of Seasons, but to me this song is untouchable. Years later it has the power to make my jaw drop in amazement, and I still find myself wishing the song never had to end. Since the conclusion of the song represents the conclusion of life itself, I think that says something about of this one "little" song.
While such a monumental song could have been worth the price of admission all by itself (see Edge of Sanity's Crimson), the band didn't stop there, instead opting to include a host of live cover performances that further demonstrate both their influences and their versatility. The Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple covers weren't entirely unexpected, but come on, Elton John? Can anyone honestly say they saw that one coming? It's all brilliant stuff, particularly the mash-up at the end called the Big Medley, which features bits of songs by Queen, Pink Floyd, Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Genesis, and even Journey.
Here's the bottom line. A Change of Seasons is an absolute masterpiece that is a must-have for every single Dream Theater fan and everyone who enjoys progressive metal. It may be a bit heavy for some traditional progressive rock fans, but I've generally found that crowd to be pretty open minded, so I think they'd enjoy it as well.
DTs Best Song, and Most Underrated.......2007-06-08
This twenty minute epic is everything Dream Theater stand for, done perfectly. It doesn't ever get boring, and the energy of the first 5 minutes lasts through the whole song - something that newer epics from DT, namely Octavarium, can't seem to do.
It starts with an acoustic interlude, which leads into a roaring riff from Petrucci. It continues like this for a while, fading between great drums, great bass, great guitar - and then the vocals come in.
The best DT lyrics ever are in this song, all about missed opportunities and chances. Beautifully sung by LaBrie.
About 14 minutes in is one of the greatest moments in music, and DTs finest. The lyrics are powerful, the music haunting - its a perfect emotional buildup, leading into a bluesy solo by petrucci.
The whole thing continues to unfold, over proggy soundscapes to acoustic interludes, until it reaches the last verse.
Its a ridiculously ambitious album, flawlessly pulled of by the masters of technical music today, by far their most underrated. I STRONGLY advise anyone new to Dream Theater to buy this. An awesome album. 5 stars.
Fantastic!!!.......2007-04-11
This was a fantastic release. I loved the cover songs that were done. The vocals were strong, and the music was tight as usual. I love this band!
Dream Theater Full Length EP.......2007-01-30
Change" is an ep from Dream Theater that is longer than many regular albums. The centerpiece is the 24 minute magnum opus new studio track "A Change Of Seasons". The rest of the album is rounded out by a bunch of live cover songs. In lesser hands these covers would be nothing special, but Dream Theater takes the songs that influenced them and make them their own. The title track is a tour de force conceptual piece that to me ranks right up there with the best stuff the band has done. The track had actually been around the band for a while, but they never really had room to fit it on to any of their previous studio albums. Everything about it is great instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically. A picture of the band at their best. Keys man Kevin Moore has left the band by this album being replaced by Derek Sherinian (Planet X, Alice Cooper, Billy Idol). Sherinian's somewhat more aggressive keyboard style fits the band perfectly. The live covers run the gamut of progressive oriented classic rock and are all performed brilliantly. Elton John's "Love Lies Bleeding" (on of Elton's finest tunes), Deep Purples' "Perfect Strangers", Led Zeppelin's "The Rover", `Achilles Last Stand", and "The Song Remains The Same". The album closes with a medley of Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh", Kansas "Carry on My Wayward Son", Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Journey's "Lovin Touchin Squeezin", Dixie Dregs "Cruise Control" and Genesis's "Turn It On Again". The band sounds like they are having a blast playing these songs and they put their own unique stamp on all of them. Since this is not a full studio album it may not be essential Dream Theater, but it is well worth owning.
The Next Step.......2007-01-11
Having been a Rush fan since I first heard them in '76, I needed something to fill the void that occurred when Neil took the hiatus that was necessary to face the challenges he faced with personal tragedy. I heard of this band that was as articulate musically, as well as fans themselves. Lo and behold I discovered DT. After hearing Images and Words I was hooked. They had more of an edge, but used those time changes and syncopations that hooked me on Rush. "A Change of Seasons" is the next step in DT's growth, taking something from their beginning and bringing alive six years later. It is, what appears to me, as taking a piece written with Kevin, and having Derek add his touch. Most bands would be happy to rest on the laurels of such a fine tune as the seven part title track, that utilizes all five intruments, (the voice of James LaBrie is such a unique instrument in itself), and then throw in some filler. Not these guys. They think of what they would want to hear their favorite band do, and include covers that (should) make the original artist smile with pride, as their execution is spot on. If you've never heard this band, and are looking for a Hard Rock Progressive band that borders on Metal, this CD along with Images and Words is a good starting point to hear a truly great band. After that, you'll want more.

A Great Listen.......2007-03-27
I bought this CD for the last song "If You Could See Me Now" and was pleasantly surprised at the selection of songs. I felt blessed listening to it.
A "Must Get" CD !!!!.......2006-02-20
How does one begin to review a CD that is so uplifting and inspiring? This CD is a true testament to the awesome talent and faithfulness of Bishop Morton. My favorite selections are, Reason Enough, Storm Chaser, and If You Could See Me Now. Bishop Morton was my mother's pastor. I was honored and privileged to hear him sing If you Could See Me Now at her funeral. It brought me great comfort. I totally recommend this entire CD, and for anyone who has lost a loved one, I especially recommend selection #14, If You Could See Me Now . It will indeed lift your spirit and help you move on knowing that those who have left us are "in ä better place".
Awesome.......2005-09-19

Celebrate the Season.......2005-08-16
Saints and friends, Bishop Morton, the Original OG certainly believes in change. He refuses to sing the same old sound CD to CD and while it can be confusing to those who don't like change (not me), it's astounding to know Bishop has successfully thrown us for a loop. This CD is absolutely wonderful in that the sounds are new, Bishop demonstrates powerful range in both vocal and sound and he wraps it all up w/a pretty bow. I loved the last song but don't listen to it that much because of a recent loss of loved ones but 'Storm Chaser' helps ease the pain. Thank you Bishop and others for another job well done. God bless all that hear this CD.
THE BISHOP OUT DID HIMSELF!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-09
THIS ALBUM IS OFF THE CHAIN. IT IS A MUST HAVE FOR A WORSHIPPER. EVERY SON G(AND I DO MEAN EVERY) WILL TAKE YOU RIGHT INTO THE PRESENCE OF GOD. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE ALBUM IS "STORM CHASER" WHICH REFERS TO THE AWESOMENESS OF GOD TO CHASE A STORM AWAY. ANOTHER GOOD SONG IS "SEASON CHANGE" THAT FEATURES THE QUEEN OF SOUL ARETHA FRANKLIN. THIS SONG IS VERY MOVING. IT ENCOURAGES THE LISTENER THAT EVEN THOUGH SEASON CHANGE WE CAN STILL FIND THE STRENGTH TO GO ON. BUT THE LAST SONG, "IF YOU CAN SEE ME NOW", IS A GUT WRENTCHER . IF YOU EVER HAD A LOST OF A LOVE ONE YOU WILL MOVED & BLESSED. YOU WILL KNOW THAT GOD IS STILL MOVING AND GOD IS BLESSING THIS MIGHTY MAN OF GOD IF YOU LISTEN. THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR MALE SINGERS, I KNOW I WILL BE SINGING A FEW OF THESE SONGS.

Customer Reviews:
"A courageous work by a top-notch Musician".......2006-06-28
Richie Furay, who originally released this LP (now out on CD, of course)for the Christian label Myrrh Records in 1982, showed incredible fortitude and faith in his beliefs by writing and singing out his heart on this very enjoyable work. I have listened to it over and over for nearly 24 years, and heard several of the tunes live at a Calvary Chapel concert in Las Vegas shortly after the LP's release. Maybe that is why I've always loved the album, because at the Sin City venue, Richie took the time to perform both Christian and secular music, and gave very keen insights as o how each song on his new LP was created. From "Promise of Love" to "Yellow Moon Rising" to "For the Prize" to the autobiographical title track, Richie Furay shines, making great Christian music with a solid country rock n' roll flavor. His backing musicians were among the best in the Christian genre, and if you had no liner notes/lyrics to follow along to, several of the songs would have stood alone as just great music. Period.
Richie Furay had the guts to write and record the music of his heart at a time when it was a very risky move to do so. He has never regretted leaving Asylum Records and moving into the music of his beliefs, and has demonstrated a unique ability to combine that music with the secular music he still performs so well. Over the years, Furay has occasionally performed and recorded with former bandmates from Buffalo Springfield, Poco and the SHF Band over the years, and in June, 2006 released his first totally secular work in over 25 years, "Heartbeat of Love", which features 12 tracks (10 new), and including updated versions of "Kind Womnan" (1968) and "Let's Dance Tonight" (1973)with backing vocals and instrumentation from such talents as Neil Young, Kenny Loggins, Timothy B. Schmitt, Mark Volman, Paul Cotton, Sam Bush, Jeff Hanna, Rusty Young, and Stephen Stills, just to name a few. This new CD is superb; its roots, however, lie in the courage to make music his own way, and "Seasons of Change" was a genuine attempt by Furay to say, "Music is my life, and I intend to play it for a long, long time on MY terms".
This album is certainly worth 4 stars, and is an easy listen.
Hall of Fame Rocker becomes Preacher.......2005-10-09
The great tenor voice still pours out the melodic songs that made him so loved in Buffalo Springfield and Poco, but now Richie Furay sings for the LORD. Richie was one of the three or four seminal figures in melding Rock and Country music and you find flashes of that here along with some early-eighties production sound. After a trio of solo albums for Electra that hinted at his conversion to Christianity, Richie finally cuts this straight Christian album. It is still feel-good and joyous music that will be enjoyed by all - but especially Richie fans and devoted Christians.

Ray Boltz is a wonderful artist, and this album is great!.......1999-06-11
This album by Ray Boltz, entitled "Season's Change" is a wonderful collection of Contemporary Gospel songs that really get to the heart of things. The lyrics address many real life issues that people face every day, while bringing a message of hope and peace. Through his music, Ray Boltz has brought the love of Jesus Christ to the real world. This is a great listening experience, and an exciting way to surface some of the problems we've been facing and realize that God is in control.

I am a worshipper.......2006-08-03
I really was not expecting this album to be as good as it is because I knew of Rodnie Bryant but I never fell in love with his music until I purchased this album. The Worship songs on this album really does minister to you. From the urban beat I am a worshipper until the foot stomping don't judge my praise, every sing on the album is good. If you are a minister of music, this album has songs for the Mass, adult, and youth choir. It also has songs that a praise team can sing. This album is worht the money and you will not be dissappointed.
SUPRISE TO MY EARS.......2005-10-04
I REALLY WASN'T EXPECTING THIS ALBUM TO MINISTER THE WAY THAT IT DOES. THIS IS A GREAT CD FOR A WORSHIPPER. THE SONGS ARE WELL WRITTEN AND THE MUSIC IS NICE. THIS ALBUM IS WORK THE BUY SO....BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT... YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. I WISH I HAD AN EXAMPLE AS TO WHO RODNEY BRYANT REMINDS ME OF BUT I DON'T.
Great CD!.......2005-08-21
This cd is very nice. I like the first seven songs. The remaining songs are just ok. If it wasn't for that, the cd would get a 5 star rating. I encourage everyone who purchase this cd to make sure they keep their ears open to #7. It will have you in worship. I also like the rendition of "My Liberty", which was originally sung by Yolanda Adams. Buy the cd, it wont be a dissapointment and rememba!, he's a keepa!

Not enough stars in the sky to give this one.......2002-07-31
I'm a long time supporter of the assiduous efforts of James Collins and his beautiful creation: "Fertile Ground". This is thier third release following the beautiful works of: "Field Songs" and "Spritual War". The band built up a strong word-of-mouth following in the Late '90s by touring the east coast constantly, concentrating on small venues and night clubs. Wowing an ever-growing audience with boundless musical dexterity and an unparalleled vibe-building panache. In addition to amassing a sizable following, their self-released album, Field Songs, I think sold well for an independent release; soon, they were attracting the attention of soul heads world wide after Spirtual War. Paying homage to the jazz and soul groups who helped to influence and form their musical character, Fertile Ground has mustered up a soul master piece with "Season Change". This CD blends a mix of soulful grooves and eclectic percussive rhythms to create a majestic portrait of musical art they can claim as their own sound.
Like my Julie Dexter "Dexterity" CD and a few others, I grabbed this one 2 weeks before it was released, by seeing them perform on thier promotional tour in Atlanta in May. This is the best CD I own from any band in any era. This CD contains 16 beautiful tracks of soulful ear candy. Any soul head, any jazz head, and real music lover would fall in love with this gem. I haven't heard one person say anything bad or negative about this band. Navasha (lead singer),Marcus Asante and James Collins and the other cat(sorry can't remember his name/horn player) have giving the music industry a blueprint of tasteful music....... listen and learn.
