Funky, but... I give this one 3 1/2 stars........2006-05-22
Where would James Brown be without Maceo Parker, and the rest of the Horny Horns?
The answer is that he'd probably still be James Brown. Unfortunately, Maceo's solo albums just don't have the sharp-tuned edge that highlights the best of his work with the Soulbrother #1, as evidenced here.
Don't get me wrong - Funk Overload has its share of funky tunes, and it grew on me after a few listenings. Half the songs are right up there - the remake of Rufus's classic Tell Me Something Good is nice and tight, Children of the World has a great highlight chorus that'll set your bootie groovin', and Do You Love Me goes right along with the slick cover of Sly Stone's Sing a Simple Song.
And then, the flip side. The rapped lyrics on a couple traks are so groaningly weak they're all but unlistenable, especially on the lame Let's Get it On. Elephant's Foot is a cute tune, but sounds like it belongs on another album altogether (A kid's disc? Maybe Maceo was trying to pull in that coveted 5 to 10 year old crowd, tossing it in with the above-mentioned Children of the World).
Anyway, this is a mixed bag, with one or two clunky stinkers mixed in with the funky gems. So instead of buying the album new and spending fifteen or sixteen bucks, save some cash and listen to the song samples, then buy a cheap used copy from Amazon Marketplace, or if you're really picky, download the songs you like from iTunes or wherever.
The funkiest CD ever!!! Nothing but great grooves!!!.......2005-12-17
If this doesn't get you smiling, your feet tapping, and your ass shaking, you shouldn't be listening to music. - Go see a doctor, because you are deaf or missing your rythym bone!!
Simply put - Maceo IS Funk, and this is his best ever.
Buy this NOW!!!
I'd also advise getting extra copies for your friends.
I guarantee they will thank you!
DEFINITELY PURCHASE THIS ALBUM!!!.......2003-06-05
This is probably the most groovy album I have heard in almost ten years. Every single track is absolutely seamless, and extremely funkly. My friends and I have cut the rug to this album so hard and so many times that we had to refinish the floors underneath it due to repeated wear and tear! No, I am not kidding; dancing to this album is the cause of our having to spend lots of money to fix our living room floor! This album is all about having fun, and if you buy it, I personally guarantee that you will be satisfied to the fullest extent.
Ooh. LET'S FUNK!!!!!.......2001-08-05
This album represents one word. ULTRA FUNK (sorry, that was two..) I read somewhere; 'Maceo Parker is one of the funkiesk man alive'. If you're in doubt, listen to one of the samples above. If you're not convinced, buy it anyway.
somebody slap me........2000-06-20
Maceo is a god. It's too bad he's not received the recognition that he deserves. Songs like "Elephant's Foot" and "Youth of the World" will get your feet moving. If not, you're dead. This is a great antidote to the rainy weather we get here.

Customer Reviews:
DeathMetal-lica.......2003-02-20
This sounds nothing like Metallica. If you are a metallica purest, I warn you now: DO NOT TOUCH THIS ALBUM WITH A TEN FOOT POLE!! Metallica purests will go out of their skulls listening to Nothing Else Matters and The God that Failed. Others would be bothered by the inclusion of King Nothing, a "Load" track, in the tribute. Infact, the only thing most purests might accept is the Coffin Texts version of Call of the Ktulu, which is the Metallica version with some sound effects.
This is more like "What if? Metallica were a 90s death Metal Band?" Death Metal fans who may have gotten their heavey metal start with Metallica would appreciate this album the most. It's the old favorites with a much more rapid fire pace, and distorted lyrics. It's also a great jumping off point for someone searching for more death-bands to listen to.
total overload, vol 1 &2 tribute to metallica.......2002-05-20
this is very good tribute to metallica, apart from that its death metal and im in to thrash metal. but overall very good.
awesome.......2002-04-04
This tribute album is [great]. All the songs are very good indeed. Even it suffered form bad production, i think Fist's Damage Inc. was one of the best cause its so awesome. And to the first reviewer who said they wouldve liked to see "king nothing" covered, well dude, it is...so i dont know if your reviewing without listening...but yea,
Okay.......2002-02-08
This album is okay.........The music is pretty awesome and almost perfect but the vocals arent any good. They have distorted their voice which doesnt sound as good.

I also play guitar
Good.......2001-09-14
Too Bad they had to put load songs otherwise is a good album to have

This single's been re-released many times, and it's the Australian edition of Overload where I found my favorite version.
The Original Vocal Mix is great. Judging by the similar length, I guess it's the Club Mix on this U.S. single. This mix demonstrates Voodoo & Serano's ability at producing excellent hardtrance with a hint of commercial trance, due to the vocal. In this mix, the lyrics and vocal serve as a fuse. "I'm getting ready to explode. Spark out the fire. Light up the fuse, I'm letting go." When the music slows down, and a piano and vocal enter, you don't know what to expect next. As an acid synth gradually builds, it envelops you. Very catchy.

Customer Reviews:
worth it.......2005-06-19
well as of right now, i have 1 15" ascendant audio sub in a 4 cf. box tuned to 22 Hz, most songs on this album are so crazy i cannot sit in my car it hurts to much. Only problem is that the high bass hits around 50 Hz or so dont sound to good, but that's why you have mid's. If you want killer bass, this is the cd you want, this will def. show off your system no matter what kind of sub you have. Have fun!

Old School.......2003-10-04
MAn its been a while since I heard this...and it was well woth the buy. Some might not like it but this was hella good.
I have felt the boom!.......2002-12-14
I bought the Sonic Overload CD set a few months ago, and I had never played a Bass Mekanik CD on my stereo system before. You can imagine my surprise! My system consists of a Roadmaster speaker (RBB3000, I think) with 2 6.5" low/midrange (20hz is the lowest it can handle) 300-watt woofers and 2 22,000hz tweeters, a Roadmaster BASS BLASTER 600-watt subwoofer (10", it had a neon light but the controller module got fried somehow), and 2 50-watt Magnavox bookshelf speakers (mainly for bass). I give the Sonic Overload CDs 5 stars!

Customer Reviews:
Voltage Overload.......2003-06-02
This is a collection of AC/DC music from tribute bands all over the world. If you are a hard-core AC/DC fan some of the interpetations may bother you a little bit. There are some great tracks worth listening to: One of the more impressive is Robert Valdes'cover of "What do you do for Money Honey". He played some nice lead guitar as well as the bass, drums and sang the lead and back up vocals. Another interesting track is "Back in Black" performed by the all female band "Whole Lotta Rosies". They are some very talented women. As far as the closest sounding band to AC/DC I would have to go with track number 8--"If you want blood--you got it". This is by the Chicago band Downpour. This track has great lead guitar and I think one of the better if not best lead vocals on the disc.

More heavy modern/melodic rock.......2006-08-26
These guys have done it again--putting out a monster modern/melodic rock album that is going virtually unnoticed. As always seems to be the case from one album to the next with these guys, they have taken a different direction.
"Weight Of The World" was these guys' "comeback" album in 2002, and it was at the time the ultimate great combination of my favorite melodic rock of yesteryear and the best of today's "modern rock" sound (for lack of a better term). 2003's "Higher" continued in a similar melodic/modern vein but with a much more pop emphasis. Well, with this effort, the band returns to a considerably heavier sound while also sounding more "modern" than ever in spots yet still incredibly melodic--even if the melodies aren't quite as in your face upon first listen as on some of their previous efforts.
Like with most Harem Scarem albums, I could rave about each and every track here. There is not a dud in the bunch. "Dagger" leads off the album with an amazingly powerful modern-sounding guitar riff that breaks into vintage Harem Scarem melodies. "Rise and Fall" clearly emphasizes the modern and dark tone of the album. "Forgive and Forget" is another awesome, aggressive track in this vein.
"Can't Live With You" is a quinessential power ballad, and "All You're Getting" is another excellent ballad track--check out the beautiful keyboard intro on this track. In fact, there are more tracks that could be considered ballads on this album than usual for this band, as "Understand You" and the closing bonus track "Wishing" would also fall into that category. For sure, they are all high quality.
"Afterglow" is perhaps the ultimate Harem Scarem song on the album, as a subtle verse just explodes into an amazing chorus. "Don't Come Easy", "Leading Me On" and "Same Mistakes" further display this band's uncanny ability to sound current and fresh while still maintaining the melodic sound that I grew up loving. I don't know how they continued to be inspired to do it so well, especially considering their continued lack of commercial success.
For sure, this band's catalog stands up with that of any of the better known "melodic rockers" of the day--including the likes of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and other big bands of the genre. They are far superior to bands like Poison--who had plenty of hits I liked "back in the day" but can't touch these guys musically. For sure, they have one of the best sounds going in rock music this decade. Hopefully they will continue to be inspired by their small but loyal following of fans. Like the last two surprising releases in this decade, this one once again delivers the catchy rock and melodies bigtime. Highly recommended for melodic rock fans looking for something that sounds current and fresh.
Underpromoted!.......2005-11-26
It's the 21st century's biggest rock mystery that the band as Harem Scarem that should already have made a hit album or two remain unknown to the music fans community. Recent albums from Weight of the World(2002), Higher(2003)to this release are just hilarious and I really hope this album will finally gain commercial success.
As some of the reviewers mentioned this album has more modern rock approach than the predecessors but still retain the classic rock feel. DAGGER the opener is somewhat close to their earlier rock songs and a bit close to current Canadian rock superstar Nickleback in vocal style. AFTERGLOW is the most commercial track from the album that should be played more in radio station. DON'T COME EASY is really another commercial rock song that will be sure to expand their fanbase. FORGIVE AND FORGET is typical of uptempo shuffle rocker and ALL YOU'RE GETTING is well-produced trademark ballad that should appeal to the music fans new to them. (But seasoned fans may get a bit bored because we listened similarly styled uptempo songs in eigher Weight Of The World and Higher.)
Verdict: Commercial success is imperative so that they can move on to the step forward.
Rating: 90 out of 100
It's incredible that they can create so many great songs in just a few years.
Recommended for either casual Harem Scarem fans or the rock fans who also love NICKLEBACK, GOO GOO DOLL, Hardline, and Giant.
these guys are serious!.......2005-08-09
you can tell this is an example of a band who is commited with themselves, this guys enjoy what they do and it shows in every record they made, strong vocals, excellent guitars, intelligent songs. Overload its a little more heavy, but only in the intensity of the vocals, "forgive and forget" its a goog example of what im saying. Buy it, period.
Harem's records always deliver classic, heavy melodic rock.......2005-06-23
Many melodic rock fans will attest to the fact that Harem Scarem is one of the all-time classic bands in the genre. It's tough to explain how a band that consistently releases records on par with the best of Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Aerosmith remains (for the most part) ignored by the larger music community. For those new to the Harem story, the band started out as a softer Journey influenced act with their debut album, progressing to the heavier sounds of Mood Swings and Voice of Reason. A few more records followed, including a name change to Rubber, and a stylistic change towards more power-pop influenced music. Returning as Harem Scarem for the much praised Weight of the World album, the band has since delivered 3 great albums, including 2003's Higher and Early Years, and now 2005's Overload.
As with any of the band's output, this album is full of surprises and is a totally different beast than the albums that preceded it. This approach sees the band jumping all over the map musically, but helps them to remain fresh and display original sounds - which is tough when you release over 10 studio albums in 15 years. Overload can be seen as a combination of Weight of the World and Voice of Reason due to the heavier guitars and vocals. Guitarist Pete Lesperance shines and brings out his baritone guitars, vocalist Harry Hess smokes on every track, and the rhythm section is rock solid as ever. The band's overall sound is a cool mix of Def Leppard, Skid Row, Whitesnake, and Queen. On paper it sounds like heavy Extreme, but Harem has more of a modern edge and heavier (still melodic though) vocals. As always, this comes highly recommended, though I place it just a notch below 2003's Higher album. Since Amazon doesn't give a Track Listing, see below for the track order. You can also get the other version (Japanese I believe), which has a different bonus track for fans already owning the Higher import, which had "Wishing" on it already. The other version leaves off "Wishing" for a cool cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long."
Track List:
"Dagger" - One of the heaviest tracks, great chorus
"Afterglow" - More power pop for the Rubber fans, but with a twist
"Rise and Fall" - Really heavy vocals and a cool guitar solo
"Don't Come Easy" - Chorus is a little too simple lyrically, but overall a good track
"Can't Live With You" - Massive Def Leppard style ballad, but much heavier than anything they've done since Pyromania
"Forgive and Forget" - Probably my favorite track here. Very modern sounding, should be a radio hit!
"All You're Getting" - Queen styled ballad that has gotten rave reviews from longtime fans to newbies
"Leading Me On" - An underappreciated track that has a fantastic chorus
"Understand You" - A deceptively simple ballad that provides some great melodic moments
"Same Mistakes" - Voice of Reason styled, 6/8 timed rocker
"Wishing" - Bonus Track, slower ballad that is up to par with their best. Great way to end the album, fits in perfectly with the rest of the tracks.
