The songwriting partnership of Grant McLennan and Robert Forster made the Go-Betweens one of the 1980s' greatest unsung bands. And here they are, Forster and McLennan, their solo works abbreviated and joined together. Forster's a leaper, gobbling his vocal lines and galloping atop a quick beat on "121," then slows down for slinky, wry weariness on "I've Been Looking for Somebody" and even a touch of Lou Reed in "Beyond Their Law." Simply put, Forster's aesthetically hurried, under pressure, where McLennan's at ease. The late Grant McLennan's voyage here is more appreciable, from the polished, new-wave-tinted pop of "Haven't I Been A Fool" to the crisp, visionary, starkness of "Hot Water" and "Horsebreaker Star." The doleful fiddle in the former song and McLennan's mature voice make it so memorable, and the sheer austerity and haunting electric guitar backdrops make the latter magnetic. The collective weight here is that of two veritable songwriting geniuses, one taken too soon. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

This double disc release celebrates the best of the solo recordings released by Robert and Grant during their seven-year hiatus from The Go-Betweens. Each selected the thirteen songs on their individual CD. While Grant's disc is a chronological journey through his catalog, Robert elected to mix up the order. The albums will be issued individually in standard packaging this fall. "They remain one of rock's most pleasurable hand-me-down discoveries" - Entertainment Weekly.

4 out of 5 stars in between right at the end .......2007-07-19

Planned as a way station between album projects during a year off, "Intermission" becomes a tombstone and artifact for the Go-Betweens with the death of Grant McLennan, suddenly, at age 49 at his home on a night he had gathered his dearest friends to a house party. Robert Forster, his brother in peaceful arms, was there that night too. It's hard to hear these songs from the sojourning solo years, few aimless and barren, most rich with growth and reward, without feeling the melancholy tug of death, unless, of course, you are new to the music. Then what you get is a dream, smart, well-realized, fun, at times shimmery, at times bookish guitar pop from two of the best as they found their way through daily living to the other side that was the happy reunion of the band for three more albums before Grant's end. The cover looks too much like a stone with a name in a resting place in the ground, a monument is not for pop, even sophisticated, keepable pop such as this. Mostly, I think, it's a thing for friends, a keepsake. It was meant as a way of discovery for all the new fans that found them with their last Go-Betweens release, "Oceans Apart." Thinking that you have new fans, and not just a lot of old ones rediscovering you, is a thought full of hope and light as you push into 50 with all your musical instincts and thought process intact, but the deeply engrossed fans the two of them long inspired will already have the original solo albums or want to seek them out. Not all of the work on those solo records is worthy of the obsession, but this just skims that very fine surface, and that desire to dive in and breathe deeply is what loving a great band is all about. apart from mourning, there is still magic in here.

It can't be said enough that DC Talk is one of the most relevant and critical forces of change in the history of Contemporary Christian Music. They brought the sounds and words of the streets into the consciousness of mainstream Christianity. And musically, they've done it in the most pleasing manner. This hits package is but a mere glimpse of the brilliance Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Smith have displayed in so many styles throughout their 10-year career in DC Talk. There are beautiful ballads of forgiveness ("Between You and Me"), riveting rockers of conviction ("Jesus Freak"), and the quiet, stark realities of being role models ("What If I Stumble?"). New cuts "Say the Words (Now)" and "Chance" play up the sweet melodies these guys know so well. Older fans will enjoy the inclusion of "Luv Is a Verb" and "Socially Acceptable." As long as the group keeps its finger on the pulse of the mainstream and its heart focused on the Almighty, another decade of hits is a good bet. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars dio at his prime.......2006-05-10

I would like to state that after having seeing RJD first on the Heaven and Hell tour with the Sab and then many other subsequent live shows including this tour and the rare show Hear'N'Aid, RJD gave us a glimpse of what was happening on stage at that time with the band. For me the biggest disappointment was that it was not a longer disc. I remember getting this when it first came out and I bought it on casette. The album was put together to give the band some time to let the band have a bit of a break during their almost constant touring AND to show people what the shows were all about. Dio at his prime with the most elaborate stage show was just a rockers dream come true. with regard to the music, judge for yourself, but dio was fantastic and the band tight. Time to Burn was a radio hit at that time and is still an excellent song. As an import it is pricey but for the diehard fan, i think this is a great addition to the collection. RJD has weathered decades of musical changes and has remained a vital part of rock and roll and has continued to stick to his guns and deliver music he believes in. This cd is a great opportunity to hear his voice during the early years in dio. as anyone who has sang professionally knows it is hard enough to hit notes dead on standing still yet RJD has no problem keeping his voice exactly where it needs to be while dancing and rocking out (fellow singers may agree). Another excellent choice to hear RJD give a great vocal concert is the live DVD at the spectrum. In a word, if you want to capture the magic of a time when Dio was at his peak, this is a must have. Rock the vote and Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A forgotten classic, but too short!.......2006-05-01

"Intermission" is an excellent EP that all true Dio fans will want to own. It is a bit pricey for an EP with only 6 tracks (5 live and one new studio track), but in my opinion it is worth it.

The Live Tracks: The best track on this EP is a truly awesome live version of the song "Sacred Heart". Ronnie really pushes his vocals to the limit on this track, and the climax of the song, which incorporates a few bars of "The Last In Line", is stunning. You also get a great, high energy take on "We Rock" with Ronnie pushing his voice into the stratosphere. "Rock'n'Roll Children" is better than the studio version in my opinion, but unfortunately the Rainbow medley smack in the middle really kills the whole song for me. "Long Live Rock'n'Rol" and "Man on the Silver Mountain" are both played too fast, and just seem uninspired compared to other versions out there. "King of Rock and Roll" is pretty much identical to the version on the Sacred Heart album, and "Rainbow in the Dark" is also a pretty basic no-frills version. I've never honestly known for sure if it is Vivian Campbell or Craig Goldie playing on these live tracks, but if it is Goldie he sounds great and does an admirable job of recreating the guitar solos from the studio versions of these songs lick-for-lick. Overall, this could have been a five-star live album if they'd just included more tracks.

Then we have the new studio track, "Time To Burn". This was the first new Dio song with guitarist Craig Goldie, and while it is decent, it's really not anything to write home to mom about. If you are thinking about buying this EP just for the studio track, don't worry, you are not missing a classic or epic RJD track anywhere along the lines of "Heaven and Hell" or "Holy Diver". "Time to Burn" is very similar in style to "Mystery" or "Hungry For Heaven", but is slightly slower and less memorable in my opinion. The chorus and guitar solo are both strong, it's mainly the slow pace and average verse that drag this song down. It's actually very good for your typical major-key, '80s pop-metal track, but this would really just be filler on a regular Dio studio album. I also don't think this was a good track on which to introduce Craig Goldie to the fans. It's definitely not a shred-fest. If I were a Dio fan in 1986/1987, I would have been VERY WORRIED about where Dio was headed. Fortunately for all of us, Craig and Ronnie stepped up and delivered some real Dio-style metal on "Dream Evil".

Finally, the production and sound quality is great on both the live tracks and the new studio track. In fact, "Time to Burn" has a much better production quality than both the "Sacred Heart" and "Dream Evil" albums.

This is an EP that true Dio fans should have in their collection, and that casual Dio fans should think about picking up if they can get it for a reasonable price.

3 out of 5 stars For those Hungry For Heaven..........2005-11-22

This is a great EP for those who love to hear Dio Live! The EP was released to introduce Dio's new guitarist Craig Goldy who joined after Vivian Campbell's departure from the band. The songs are straight forward readings of the studio versions (with the exception of the medley) which is a sharp contrast to the days with Vivian who seemed to inject each performance with something distinctive for the audience of their shows. Goldy plays the solos a bit differently due to the HUGE difference in styles between the two guitarists. While Vivian is definitely the better player/performer, Craig was a better writer for Ronnie's songs. Just listen to Time To Burn (a studio track included on the EP) and the CD's Dream Evil, Magica, and Master of the Moon. These are prime examples of the Dio formula! I'm not saying they are the best by any means, that distinction will always go to Dio's first two CD's: Holy Diver and The Last In Line! But Ronnie and Craig were more on the same wave length as far as style and vision than Ronnie and Viv were. Viv was all about the riff and the solo where as Craig was about the song as a whole. I gave this EP three stars only because we have to pay the price of a double CD for a six-song disc and more importantly, it was way too short, considering the following VHS release of the Sacred Heart concert (available on DVD now, pick it up it is awesome!) showed that their were alot more great performances that could have been culled into a full live release! But still it is a good listen and I was hoping WB would release it domestically so we didn't have to pay out the wazoo for an import!

3 out of 5 stars Dio - 'Intermission' (Universal).......2005-04-16

Originally released in 1986 as one reason this lp was put out is to showcase new guitarist Craig Goldy on the cut "Time To Burn".An EP,with a running time of 34 minutes.Years ago, this would've been considered to be a full-length lp.I mean,it's nice to hear the live versions of "King Of Rock And Roll","Sacred Heart" and "Rock And Roll Children",but for some reason(s),this album never did much for me.It's okay.Pretty much for die-hards.

3 out of 5 stars Clarification needed..........2004-03-10

Just to let everyone know (there seems to be much confusion), Vivian Campbell does not appear on this album. It is, in fact, Craig Goldie on guitars. I give it three stars only, because Craig Goldie is not on the level of Vivian Campbell. He seems to struggle a bit in moving into the speed fretting at the end of the solo on "Rainbow in the Dark". He does make it sound okay at the very end, but it's evident that Vivian is conspicuously absent. Also, I don't like the sound Goldie's guitar. He's not using a Gibson Les Paul or even a nice "fat" sounding Charvel, which Vivian originally used to play the classics. I think he's playing some crummy speed metal style of guitar with a thinner sound. It almost sounds like he's using a single coil pick up on the bridge position. The sound is very thin, instead of being bright, bassy and full... If you are a guitar connoisseur, you won't like the sound. I can't understand some of the guitars people were playing in the 80's. If you're going to play a Fender offshoot type of guitar, at least get a Jackson and put in a decent pick up on the bridge, like a "Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck", or something. Avoid this cd, you'll be glad you did. Hey Dio, release the Last in Line or Holy Diver tour on CD. Thanks.

Like the film it complements, the soundtrack to Intermission is an ensemble affair. The movie, starring among others Colin Farrell (Daredevil's Bullseye, The Recruit's recruit) and Cillian Murphy (heroin-chic hero of 28 Days Later), concerns an urban tribe in modern-day Dublin, knit by a loose web of coincidence. The album collects acts from various current and former British lands. There's Ireland's Thrills, whose "One Horse Town" has the Commitments' affection for American r&b. There's England's Turin Brakes' "Pain Killer," with its T-Rex acoustic shuffle. There's Ireland's mystic Clannad, pounding war drums on "Newgrange." There's Canada's Ron Sexsmith, offering two of his best, seeming as ever like Paul McCartney imitating Fozzie Bear. U2 contributes a track from its 1980 debut, which makes it almost as old as several Intermission stars. There is but one track from the score by John Murphy, who has distinguished himself on Guy Ritche's films (and on 28 Days Later, speaking of coincidences). Of course, the newsworthy item here is a cut featuring actor Farrell singing, and though he sounds like a young Pogue (on "I Fawt the Lore"--that is, "I Fought the Law") he's probably drinking top shelf. --Marc Weidenbaum

4 out of 5 stars Intermission: Between Acts, Much Ass is Kicked.......2004-03-20

From the abrasive opening strains of Colin Farrell's rough-hewn rendition of "I Fought the Law", the "Intermission" soundtrack proves to be a rollicking ride through the streets of Dublin. Farrell etches the song with a vagabond edge, the bristling joie de vivre that makes his acting real and alive. U2, musical patron saints of Ireland, make your veins pulse with youth, blasting the listener with "Out of Control", a song to make you run wild, fall in love, fight and die trying. From their Cheap Trick "Surrender" intro, The Thrills "One Horse Town" casually spits in the eye of indie rock's critics, and the always smooth, always cool Fun Lovin' Criminals prove once again, that "everything's shmool". Matched with John Murphy's reassuring themes, this blarney-flavored blitzkrieg of songs will shake your lovemaker and melt in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars worth it just for Intermission........2006-01-29

Many bands are known for releasing solid 3-6 track EPs at some point in their careers. Intermission has to be the Residents' pinnacle. It entrances you from the 1st track to the 5th, with a linear feel throughout, and downright creepy & eerie at times, truly the stuff of nightmares. Mark of the Moles is brilliant as well, but more of a progressive concept album, w/its own dark elements. Think of Intermission as the soundtrack/score to the "Moles"...moles unite.

5 out of 5 stars A classic tale of two civilizations forced to live together.......2005-12-14

This album is all the more timely considering the recent societal breakdown as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The Residents are at a high water mark on this album...a must for all fans of experimental music.

    Album Description

The four works on this newly remastered CD are eloquent testimony to Harry Partch's aesthetic of corporeality. The music he composed for The Dreamer That Remains, for Rotate the Body in All Its Planes, for Windsong, and for Water! Water!, was intended as only one component in the total artistic experience. In these works music joins with drama, with film, with dance, even with gymnastics, as integral parts of the composer's vision.

"The eloquent and affecting The Dreamer That Remains (1972) was Partch's last work. It was commissioned by the patroness Betty Freeman for her film on Partch which was directed by Stephen Pouliot. Rotate the Body in All Its Planes (1961) was a spin-off of the "Tumble On" sequence in Partch's large-scale theatre piece Revelation in the Courthouse Park. It was premiered at the National Collegiate Gymnasts Championship in 1961. Windsong (1958) was also written for film, the soundtrack to a film by Madeline Tourtelot in which Partch saw the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo. (A later version of the work was named Daphne of the Dunes). Finally, somewhat akin to a Broadway musical, Water! Water! (1961) is perhaps Partch's most lively and lighthearted work. It pokes fun at many targets, especially the rush of audiences for water at the interval; thus the subtitle: "An Intermission with Prologues and Epilogues.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an Intermission!.......2006-01-21

This is a surprisingly good cd from the great band we all know and love. They have a couple of new songs, and some great cover tunes. Also, they have live versions of a couple of songs that are very good, it makes me want to go to one of their shows. All in all, this makes a great addition to your metal collection, it has some good stuff on it and is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Something different and fun from one of Scandinavias rock flagships.......2006-01-11

Fun. Not always what many po-faced rock bands deliberately aim for, preferring self importance. Not Stratovarius. This album is great for fans and probably for the band who take this opportunity to clear the decks. We get tracks written by keyboard maestro Jens Johanssen plus some live tracks which show that even though they have a tendency towards overtly mellow stuff this band does own a pair of butt kicking rock boots. Plus the fun of getting to hear a few cover versions which in small doses can be great for fans as they let us know what influenced blokes like Timo Tolkki to pick up a guitar in the first place. A great grab-bag of goodies that all Strato fans should get their hands on.

2 out of 5 stars Boring, and forget about the live Hunting.......2004-10-25

OMg, these are boring songs. This album is not worth it.

I find it very humorous that a reviewer said the live performance was incredible because if you take away the audience, it would sound like studio. That's because Strato is pathetic live. You know why it sounds like studio? Because the band uses studio backing tapes live. This is the worst and most pathetic thing a band can do live. Backing tapes for vocals and instruments should be a crime.

    5 out of 5 stars totally awesome.......2003-09-23

First of all, this isn't a greatest hits cd. they already have one called The Chosen One. This album is made up of mostly unreleased songs. ok here is the break down.

11 new songs (4 are brand new, the others are hard to find b-sides and rarities). 3 covers songs (one of them is live). And last, there is the live version of Hunting High & Low.

Ok the 11 new songs are awesome. You can't even tell the b-sides are b-sides because they are so high quality, both in terms of production and song writing. The covers are great, the live cover is just as good as the studio songs on this album. excellent live production. take out the crowd and you would swear it's studio. Same thing goes for the hunting live song. In fact, it's even better than the studio version! It's worth the price of addmission alone.

if your a stratovarius or power metal fan, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good left overs........2001-07-19

Considering that this album was compiled just to buy some time for the bands break, it's an amazing work. Three new songs bring some out some new sides of the band (maybe a hint what's coming on both Timos' solo albums?), and they sound great. The cover songs are what you could expect, Stratovarius does a good job honoring their heroes, but you can't beat the originals. Rest of the songs are bonus tracks from different albums and continents, meaning that they were left over from previous albums, and that is hard to believe, they are so good. These songs are also mostly composed by Johansson and Kotipelto. This explaines why they sound a bit different than the usual Tolkki stuff. Over all this album has a slower tempo than their normal studio works, having several ballads on it. And when it comes to ballads, it's suprising that Kotipelto writes the best ones (What Can I Say, Dream With Me). This album is a must for all Stratovarius fans, Power metal fans, and Power ballad fans.

5 out of 5 stars Witty Pop Rock.......2006-01-29

This is a great collection of the music of one of the best singer songwriters in "Pop Rock" ever. Another example of what's wrong with American Radio is the complete lack of air time for Amanda Marshall. Her music can be uplifting, humorous, society challenging, or over the top romantic, but always good. You may have heard some of her songs on movie or TV soundtracks, just not on American radio.
This really is a very well put together best of collection and is a great introduction to her work. So buy it, try it, then get the rest of her albums, and play them when you give someone a ride, you will be the cool guy that knows more than the Grammy Committees.

    5 out of 5 stars Amanda Marshall's best!.......2005-07-30

Excellent collection! Now all she needs is a live cd and life will be perfect!

    5 out of 5 stars Career retrospective.......2004-04-22

It may seem too soon for an Amanda Marshall collection, but she has the hits, and it marks the end of her contract with Sony. I guess the split was good for both of them, since Amanda felt they didn't promote her last album enough, and that the album didn't sell very much at all for them. So we have 16 tracks, 14 of which are hits, and 2 are unreleased new songs. "Until We Fall In" is a uptempo song that is nice, and "Cross My Heart" is a nice ballad. Fans will want it for those, plus having all the hits on one disc. From her first album, we have the hits "Birmingham", "Let It Rain", "Beautiful Goodbye", "Fall From Grace", "Dark Horse" and "Sittin On Top Of The World". From her second album TUESDAYS CHILD we have "I Believe In You", "Love Lift Me", "If I Didn't Have You" and "Shades of Grey". From her underrated 2001 album EVERYBODYS GOT A STORY we have the title track, "Sunday Morning After", "Double Agent" and "Marry Me". A must have collection for any fan.

    5 out of 5 stars definately a must have!!!.......2004-02-09

this album is awesome!! It has all her hits plus 2 new songs.. which are amazing by the way!!! I am seriously addicted to both and i keep them on repeat for hours! ;) :)

I'm really excited to see what's next for her! So i'll just keep waiting here impatiently and listening to this awesome cd!

If you're looking for a cd to buy, then get this one! (just look for the big AM on the cover)

    that's all i'm sayin'....

5 out of 5 stars New to Amanda Marshall...this CD will hook yah.......2004-01-02

If you heard any tunes by this CDN sweetheart and were not sure what else she sings...this CD is a must. Amanda has been on the Canadian scene for a few years now and her voice and songwriting is the cats meow. Intermission covers all her hits from Dark Horse,Birmingham,Everybody's got a story,I believe and on and on. As a bonus, there are two unreleased songs..Cross my heart and Until we fall. Why these were never released before is still buggin my mind!!!! If you are a Amanda Marshall fan and you want to have one of her cd's in your car with you at all times, I highly recommend this CD. I have not bought many new releases as of late and I am glad I was cd shopping when I discovered this gem. Amanda at her finest. My baby knows how to get my groove going!!!!!
