I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

4.5 The ultimate 'reissue'.......2007-06-16

I tend to stay away from reissues. i see them, for the most part, as record companies trying to get the loyal fans to buy the same product twice. Road Runner records are know for that, and it frustrates me to be penalized for buying the product early.
Now that i got that out of the way, that is NOT the case with this product. I have owned the original for quite a while and agree with the reviews on this site so i never wrote one for the original. The cd itself in its original form is probably the best Kreator cd since 'Coma of Souls'. Unless you are one who was really into the bands experimental stage in the mid 90's. After a 25+ year career, it is hard to believe that these 40 something german headbangers can still produce such manic ecstacy, but they have. And have come full circle in their career. That is a lot to be proud of these days.
What i will commend the band and label for doing here is giving a full 2 hour plus DVD in this version. The performance at Wacken, i am sure, could have been put on DVD format and sold seperately to get more money from the die hards. Instead what they have done is reissued that performance along with some videos and 'behind the scenes' of the making of the video of the title track. It is really cool except for the fact that you have to read the subtitles because they speak in german.
I firmly believe that both the band and label re-issued this release because they wanted people to really give this cd a try. It is well worth the money and for those who may have given up on the band (why i dont know)or for the fans who just want to try it out,Its a steal for the quality of the product. A must have and even worth it if you already OWN the original. The DVD itself is worth the $20. a must own!

Enenmy Of God is Kreator finest moment in their 20 year career. The best lyrics and songwrinting in metal. New killer art and expanded booklet, the original album and two live bonus tracks. The 5.1 DTS 96/24 mix is excellent, and the live video on Wacken Open Air Festival is phenomenal.
One of the best metal albums of 2005 and a most have.

Excelent compilation of sound and movies but as in previously one Kreator DVD, here also missing (in my opinion) translation (lyrics) in concert movie. You can get everything but for fans it is excelent.

Kreator creating a masterpiece.......2007-01-08

This is my first thrash metal purchase I had the album downloaded and wanted to see them perform so i got this package! Worth every cent! THey give the audience 110% and all the extra features like - 5.1 remastering with pop up kareoke style lyrics, making of enemy of god video w/the video, animated music videos and more ! As it says in the credits "Made for the fans" and that is true. Lots of color photos, performances and more! Highly recommended

supreme metal album.......2007-05-20

I agree with most of the rest that Enemy of God is the best Kreator CD before Violent Revolution. Also the best thrash metal CD so far I have listened to. I reckon earlier Kreator CD's are brilliant too but with current production.
For the metal fan it is a joy an album this good to surface- all tracks just scream with power, speed, and intense. They should be included in Guitar Hero instead of those shabby and dull 'guitar anthems'.
Cannot wait for a next release studio album.

Kreator Still Destroy All .......2006-12-05

I have been listening to Kreator since the eponymous "Coma of Souls", but hadn't heard much from them for the last few years. It seems that since the resurgence in metal's popularity began a couple of years ago, many of the old classic thrash bands have made a comeback- some still seem to have it, some don't.

Fortunately for me, "Enemy of God" proves that Kreator does. The German metallers were one of the first "mega-heavy" bands which really got me into heavier styles of music. Nihilistic, abrasive, intense and heavy as hell, Kreator are relentless and brutal, and this excellent new comeback release proves that they still hold their own in a genre now full of bands trying to emulate what they were doing almost twenty years ago. The disturbing artwork and clever album title are worth a tip of the hat, as well. Recommended.

The Enemies of God Return with Impossible Brutality.......2006-10-25

Notice the title, I used not one but TWO songs from the album to kreate it (stupid pun); I am cool.

For starters boys and girls let me get something out of my system - Virushan is a complete idiot and probably didn't even listen to the album in question. At least, I hope he did not, because if he did he is even more of an idiot than I am giving him credit for being. Now that I have that off of my chest let me actually get this so called review rolling. For those of you who are not in the know or are new to this wonderful genre called 'metal', Kreator are sort of a big deal in thrash metal circles. These German titans of thrash have released several quality albums through out the years, many I personally own. "Enemy of God" is their latest effort, and honestly, I was half way thinking Kreator would fall flat on their face with this album and follow the trend started by a lot of other good metal bands and decided it would be cool to suck it up. But, me-o-my, how I was surprised! Kreator still have it in them. They may not be as thrashy or fast as they used to be, but they have been around for nearly twenty years. I would much prefer bands to attempt change and try different styles instead of continuing to release the same ol' same ol' year after year. As I stated before, this album is not as fast as previous releases and actually is more of a hybrid of thrash combined with more melody...a lot of melody actually, and there is nothing wrong with that. Many of the songs are down right catchy and chocked full of riffs. The guitarists are riff monsters and can shred! Though the solos may not be the most technical out there they are very respectable and hold their own, and bottom line, are enjoyable to listen to, and is not that what matters most? As far as vocals go they have a certain aggressiveness and assertiveness to them and are semi-raspy. Seems to be either you love 'em or hate them; I like them a lot. Most of the lyrical content is typical thrash material: end of the world, death, war, ancient plagues, etc. Again, not supremely great but very good and enough variation on the central them to keep things interesting. Pumping through the mix is the bass. Having bass that is audible on a metal CD is not always the easiest feat to accomplish, so that gives you some sort of idea for the quality of production on "Enemy of God". The drums are nice, classic thrash, resplendent with pounding double kick drum rhythms. So it appears I must be traveling onward friends and fellow metal heads, so let me just sum things up by saying this is a great release by the masters of German thrash. Enough of the old mixed with enough new material to kreate just the right amount of sonic destruction. Pick it up new and old fans alike; you will not be disappointed.

Unquestionably one of the finest metal albums ever made..........2006-08-24

Let's just get it out of the way: "Enemy of God" is EASILY Kreator's best album ever, and is, in all seriousness, in my very humble opinion, one of the finest metal albums (thrash or otherwise) ever made. Not since Metallica's 1988 masterpiece "...And Justice For All" (in my VERY humble opinion THE best metal album ever created) have I been as compelled to listen to an album as "Enemy of God." That's quite a bold statement, I know, being that since 1988 we've witnessed such exquisite thrash albums as Anthrax's "Persistence of Time," Megadeth's "Rust in Peace," and Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power," but honestly, "Enemy of God" eclipses all of them, if you can believe it. Since the conception of Metallica's AJFA, I have heard probably 500+ metal albums (every type), and "Enemy of God" is the only one (at least of recent memory) that I simply cannot stop listening to. I've already heard it over 500 times, according to my MP3 player (half of which were accumulated while learning almost the entire album on guitar (by ear) (let me tell you that this stuff is not easy to play...by the end of the title track I'm just about worn down; aside from that, there is exceptionally complex use of harmonics/overlays that I might never figure out (see "The Ancient Plague")). I've given "...And Justice For All" a good two or three-thousand listens, easily (my best guess); someday, "Enemy of God" might just exceed that.

While "Violent Revolution" was a solid comeback for Kreator, "Enemy of God," to be frank, makes it sound like garbage. There is simply no comparision between the two. Should you give "Enemy of God" a listen, you'll be as immediately hooked on it as I am, I can assure you (if you're a true metal fan, that is...). I couldn't disagree more with prior reviews that the album becomes boring after the first "few" tracks; in fact, while the first two tracks on the album may be the overall best, I believe that the second half is as good, if not better than, the first, with such incredible tracks as "Murder Fantasies," "When Death Takes its Dominion," ""Dying Race Apocalypse," and the masterful capstone "The Ancient Plague," among others. To be completely honest, there is not a track on this album that doesn't approach flawlessness, and I sincerely love them all.

Kreator remains one of the most influential metal bands in the world for a reason; they are simply better musicians and writers than their competitors. It may have taken them twenty years to reach what will likely be their peak, but thankfully they didn't give up! "Enemy of God" is the masterpiece we always knew Kreator was capable of creating, and the wait is finally over. It is a superlative example of what a tried-and-true metal band can still accomplish in this day and age, while newer American "metal" bands (Lamb of God, Disturbed, All That Remains, Shadows Fall) continue to fail to produce decent follow-up albums this year and last (I suppose we can add Metallica to that list, I must admit).

The bottom line is that "Enemy of God" is a a simply masterful achievement; the production is perfect, the songwriting puts them in old-school Metallica territory, and the lyrics/Petrozza's voice match the music flawlessly. The album is an instant classic; the sooner you buy it, the sooner you can get over the fact that you're a die-hard metal fan and you haven't bought it already...

Virushan Is Tone Deaf!.......2006-08-20

This Album is one of the best Thrash albums ever made so don't listen to Virushan he's tone deaf and what he said couldn't be farther from the truth! Some Metal CD's sound muddy and boring the production on this CD is excellent the guitars sound amazing and the vocals are killer. Buy this CD you'll love it!

Album Description

Handel's oratorios vary greatly in their presentation. In many ways, Esther is a rarity;it is by far the most intimate, not surprisingly as it was composed for the Duke of Chandos. The Duke's Palladian palace near the village ofEdgware had not been completed in time for the first performance so this may have taken place (as did Acis and Galatea) in the intimate surroundings of a small church, St Lawrence, Whitchurch.

We decided, therefore, that we should attempt to convey that intimacy of performance on disc; so we performed in the round with microphones in the middle, the orchestra in front of me, the choir behind and the soloists alongside. The result is everything that chamber music should be where players and singers can enjoy every aspect of Handel's masterpiece.

The choral singing has an exceptional grandure, and the instrumental playing a shimmering beauty. THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME.......2007-01-26

Esther is the first of Handel's oratorios by a good many years, written when he was 33 and enjoying the patronage of the Duke of Chandos. When he later became his own impresario and was running into trouble as a composer and producer of Italian operas he turned to oratorio as a strategic alternative, but at this early date his concern was to deliver staged entertainments for the Duke, and Esther, contemporary with the work that later gained the title Acis and Galatea, seems to have been just an unusually serious specimen of its type.

As often with Handel, there is no fully official version of the score, and this particular score may not even be fully complete from any point of view. The libretto seems to have been the work of someone in the frivolously named association of big literary figures called the Scriblerus Club, perhaps Dr John Arbuthnot, dedicatee of Pope's great poetic Epistle, but Pope himself may have had a hand in it too. As we have it here, the work breaks into two very asymmetrical parts. Scenes 1 and 2 start with a recitative lasting only seconds from Habdonah followed by a longer one in which Haman announces his onslaught on the Israelites, and from there on feature only anonymous participants. Esther herself and the other named characters make their appearance first in scene 4, but the change of tone occurs in scene 3. At this point the music gains gravity first in the chorus Ye sons of Israel with its extraordinary modulations and then in the striking aria O Jordan, Jordan. I myself feel that this weightier tone is maintained to the end, whether or not the writer of the liner note is correct in saying that the long final chorus with solos is out of proportion to its context.

Throughout - in the first part as well as in scenes 3-6 - the instrumental writing is vivid and varied, with an extraordinary pizzicato accompaniment to Tune your harps and then an even more extraordinary obbligato from the harp itself at Praise the Lord. The harpist is no less than Jan Walters, but sometime I would like to see the score and check out what seem some odd rhythmic interactions here between her and the soloist Nancy Argenta. There are no fewer than ten vocal soloists in a work lasting a little over an hour and a quarter, and a very distinguished bunch they are. I was particularly pleased to find Michael Chance in the countertenor role of the Priest of the Israelites as I admire the strength of his tone, but there is no real weakness among them, unless Lynda Russell as Esther has a couple of very slightly awkward high notes in Flatt'ring tongue, which must be a little nerve-wracking to sing as she has to find her note for herself unaccompanied at the start and later at the reprise. You will see some big names among the instrumentalists too, with Crispian Steele-Perkins on the trumpet making a predictably fine contribution towards the end, and of course with Jan Walters in that marvellous harp part early on. The chorus gets some wonderful work to do, and rises to it fully. I really am unable to worry about the proportionateness of the final chorus when I hear that incomparable Handelian build of tone, sung by 18 singers and sounding as if there were 100.

There is a good liner note by Graydon Beeks Jr, not perhaps the last word in lucidity (neither is the plot of the libretto come to that) but worth re-reading. Harry Christophers himself contributes a short foreword largely concerned with the recording process and highlighting the contributions of Mark Brown and Mike Hatch, his long-time technical collaborators. I was interested to see also the name of Geoff Miles in a role described as `editor'. What responsibilities this involved is not stated and perhaps I ought to know without being told, but I know the work of Geoff Miles as recording engineer from elsewhere and it gave me confidence just to see that he is involved in the proceedings, and the technical work is predictably excellent.

My collection of Handel oratorios is now almost complete, and what a wonderful musical experience they are. Each is unique in its own way, but Esther is unique in some very special ways, and I suggest that you do not wait until you are my age to get to know it.

Handel began composing the oratorio 'Esther' in 1718. There is some confusion as to who actually worte the libretto for it, but the story follows very closely the biblical story of Esther in the Book of Esther in the old testament. The story tells of a plot of Haman, the Agagite (Michael George-bass) jealous and powerful vizier of King Xerses (Ahasuerus-Tom Randle-tenor) of Persia(485-464), to destroy in a single day all the Jews living in the Roman Empire. He is moved to this out of hatred for the Jewish servant Mordecai (Mark Padmore-tenor),who for religious motives refuses to render him homage. The day of the proposed massacre is determined by lot. Meanwhile, Esther,niece and adopted daughter of Mordecai, is chosen Queen by King Xerses. She averts the pogrom planned against her people and has the royal decree of extermination reversed against Haman and the enemies of the Jews. Mordecai replaces Haman, and together with Esther, works for the welfare of their people. As you can see this makes for an interesting Oratorio, which it truly is!
This is a "small" contribution compared to many of Handel's other works. However, it is not "small" in a musical sense. There is much creativity on the part of Handel as to orchestral scoring; he exploits his small orchestra and chorus in surprising ways, introducing new vocal and instrumental colours throughout the score, adding and subtracting instruments and voices in many and varied ways. This is a listening surprise as it moves along. And what a great performance on the part of the Christophers as well as some outstanding vocal soloists. Mark Padmore's (Mordecai) aria "Tune Your Harps to Cheerful Strains" was superb as was the Duet between Lynda Russell (Esther) and Tom Randle (Ahasuerus).But the aria that really drew me into the entire drama was sung by Michael Chance (Priest) "O Jordan, Jordan, sacred Tide." It was perfection itself!!!!The Chorus was extremely good and dictionally perfect. It is a great listening experience.

Although Henry Purcell usually is cited as the greatest master of English text-setting, such judgments ignore the genius of John Dowland, whose music not only is totally accordant with its texts, but whose melodies are invariably memorable and eminently singable. This recording offers a variety of vocal works, most for mixed voices, accompanied by Anthony Rooley's well-tuned and tastefully realized lute figures. Of the program's 18 songs, 11 are by Dowland; the rest are by several contemporaries--Morley, Tomkins, and Weelkes--who both encouraged and were influenced by Dowland's unique musical persona, a remarkable combination of "distraught melancholy" and flawless melodic and harmonic instincts. Familiar and beloved tunes are here, including "Come again!" and "Sleep wayward thoughts." But just as compelling are Tomkins's "Weep no more, thou sorry boy" and Claudin de Sermisy's "Las, je m'y plains." The four voices--some of England's finest early-music singers--are so distinct that rather than a carefully blended ensemble, we hear each individual voice clearly defined. It's an interesting effect that works well and adds immeasurably to the color and mood of the music. --David Vernier

four voices: evelyn tubb - soprano, lucy ballard - alto, andrew king - tenor, and simon grant - bass. for those of you who think that the human voice is about as pretty a musical instrument that's ever been invented, this is a disc for you. divine stuff. director, anthony rooley adds some nice lute, too. don't miss it.

The absolutely fantastic 2nd album from one of the great underrated instrumental punk bands. The sonic equivalent of the primeval birth of a blasted desert world, and the winds that still rip through the vast canyons of its ancient landscape. The carefully crafted and cadenced rock-dub tracks, like "Clockwork Dub", stand out like great stone monuments, in memorium of a direction dub should have taken, but never did. Thank you, Andy, Gabe, and Ted.
