Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19
I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.
great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07
Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.
Supurb.......2007-03-08
This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.
Amazing!.......2007-02-24
This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.
excellent.......2007-01-17
This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

A true masterpiece... Dio's best except for Holy Diver.......2007-05-16
Following the abrupt departure of guitarist Vivian Campbell in the middle of the Sacred Heart tour, there was severe doubt amongst Dio fans as to whether the band could continue on without him. 1987's Dream Evil was the first Dio album to be released after Campbell left the band, and it put any doubts to rest once and forever.
This was the first Dio album to feature Craig Goldy on guitar. I know I'm going to get myself into trouble here, but he's my favorite Dio guitarist INCLUDING Vivian Campbell. He has quite a different approach to playing guitar than Campbell; his playing is thoughtful and melodic whereas Campbell is all fire and passion. Goldy writes great riffs that remind me of Ritchie Blackmore, and his solos have melody lines that I can hum. All three of the albums he's done with Dio (Dream Evil, Magica, and Master Of The Moon) are killer. As for the rest of the band, this was the last Dio album to feature the dynamite rhythm section of Vinny Appice (drums) and Jimmy Bain (bass), and they're as amazing as ever. Bain in particualar delivers a career-defining performance here. Keyboardist Claude Schnell is more apparent here than on any other Dio album except Sacred Heart, and his playing is inventive and athmospheric. Ronnie James Dio outdoes himself on this album. This is one of his finest vocal performances on record. The production isn't quite as good as the Dio's earlier releases. Dio seems to be going for a darker sound, and it winds up sounding a bit muddy in places. The bass isn't terribly well recorded.
This recording features some of the best songs in the Dio catalog; it amazes me that the band doesn't play these tunes much in concert these days. "All The Fools Sailed Away" is a great heavy ballad and definitely the best track here, "Night People" and "Faces In The Window" are kick-butt rockers, and other stand-outs include the riff-rocker "Dream Evil" and the highly melodic "Naked In The Rain". Every track on here is great. The only thing I can really complain about is a kind of awkward chorus on "Sunset Superman", but it really doesn't ruin the song. A lot of people complain about "I Could Have Been A Dreamer" but although it is kind of popish I still like it; it's a really GOOD pop song.
GET THIS ALBUM. This is a great metal masterpiece, and ranks only slightly below Holy Diver as Dio's finest offering.
Don't Be Fooled!.......2007-03-12
Listeners:
Don't get taken away by all the hype surrounding this album. "All The Fools Sailed Away" is an OK ballad. The pop sound of this album is nowhere near Dio's best. For new listeners, I'd recommend Holy Diver, Last In Line, and Lock Up the Wolves, which are all hard-core Dio albums.
Dio's "Evil" Classic.......2006-12-28
This is where all the controversy about "Dio spelled backwards is DEVIL" began; quite humorous in retrospect, but not suprising for the "Satanic Panic" of the 80s. I remember it all from my youth quite well. Anyway, about the album!!! This is clearly essential Dio, and perhaps the last that could truly qualify for that title. Although this would be the first album without the legendary Vivian Campbell, the rest of the classic line-up remains fully intact and newcomer (and future "stable" member) Craig Goldy is a worthy replacement. With the exception of the Tina Turner-esque "I Could Have Been A Dreamer," every track is a pleasure (just my humble opinion by the way-I know there are fans that love that song). What I can't understand is why so many reviewers totally trash Sacred Heart for being "too keyboard heavy" yet seem to turn a blind eye when it comes to Dream Evil. This album is clearly the most synth-saturated of all Dio releases, yet that is not necessarily a bad thing: all hard rock/mainstream metal acts of the mid-late eighties were "doin it." In addition, as with the much maligned Sacred Heart, Ronnie James still keeps his band a guitar driven one, with keyboards playing a complimentary role. As stated before, this is classic Dio, although if you are a newcomer to the band, it's best to begin with either Holy Diver or Last in Line; then, you will be ready for Sacred Heart and Dream Evil.
One of the best DIO albums.......2006-10-07
I have to confess that i haven't been a Ronnie James Dio fan for a long time....but when i heard the incredible rainbow in the dark i became hooked, now I love and buy everything with the Dio name on the cover.
Now, this cd i have to say is amazing.
Night People: 9.5/10
Dream Evil: 10/10
Sunset Superman: 7.5/10
All the fools sailed away: 10/10, the best song on the album, and perhaps my favorite DIO song of all time
Naked in the rain:10/10
Overlove: 9/10
I could have been a dreamer: 8.5/10, I know many people find this song a bit too commercial sounding, but I like it nonetheless
Faces in the window:8.5/10
When a woman cries:8.5/10
DIO i think is a very underrated band, so get this cd inmediately to hear some truly amazing metal!
one of dio's best work.......2006-08-14
i just got this cd i was never a fan of this album when it came out but i have been buying all the dio albums on cd ,had them on vinyl, so this was one of the last one i got and to my surprice it realy is one of his best album. graig goldie is so good on this cd and brings a darker sound to the songs.i could have been a dreamer and all the fools sailed away where the singels from the album top songs and they chapture the feel of the record, night people, dream evil and naked in the rain are wery strong songs as well.

Album Description
Melodic heavy metal from Sweden. 13 killer anthems were nailed down on tape at Studio Fredman with a production that's second to none. Featuring the talents of Fredrik Nordstrom (Hammerfall/In Flames) on guitars and keyboards and drummer Snowy Shaw (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond).

Time to kill the dragon!!.......2007-07-18
First effort from what will become a force in modern Metal. Dream Evil now have four CD's out and each is a 5! This CD follows the tale of the search and destruction of dragons. Each song is powerful and superbly played. The vocals are clear and his range is great. Fans of old school metal and power metal will love these guys. I do.
Great fantasy/power metal CD.......2007-04-03
I can't remember where I originally 'found' this album (probably through Amazon's "Also Bought" section) but when I sampled it my first impression was that it sounded good and worth picking up. So on impulse I bought Dragon Slayer and Evilized by Dream Evil. So far, I have only listened to Dragon Slayer - and that's because I can't seem to stop playing it!
Before I go further in my review, let me say that most of the other reviews are correct. This is a GREAT album; Dream Evil did a great job, and I love the fact that it's a concept album - all songs hinging around a centralized story/concept. Niklas Isfeldt has a very medlodic voice that can hit some incredible notes, all without screaming. The guitar riffs of Fredrik Nordstrom and Gus G, and the drumming of Snowy Shaw on the songs are good to great, all without being over-powering. Yes, it does harken back to some of the stuff you might have heard in the 80's and 90's. And yes, a few of the lyrics might be considered "cheesy".
But those qualities not bad things. For those of us that have been enjoying heavy metal for several decades and still love new "old-school" style music - this is a MUST HAVE! It is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time! And for those that have never heard the category of "fantasy metal" - check it out. It explains the lyrics of this album. With the recent surge of MMORPG players and RP games in general, this genre of music has been making a small scale come back, and I love it.
Now onto a few of the songs. What follows is just a little review on my favorites songs on the album. But it's not complete. All of the other songs are also good, but I thought I would point out these few:
"Chasing the Dragon" - This song showcases Niklas Isfeldt's great vocals! The song has good musical harmony overall.
"In Flames You Burn" - An incredible song - can't stop singing this one! The drumming is excellent, as is the guitar work. This is a great song that has traces of good ole "speed metal" in it.
"Save Us"- Good heavy riffs and drumwork. I absolutely love the group singing in this song - it really brings home the fantasy aspect of the music for me.
"The Prophecy" - Another good speed metal tune, again with great guitars and drumming. Isfeldt's vocals on the chorus really shine also.
"The Chosen Ones"
Cool mood-setting opening music. I absolutely love this song! Incredible vocals all around and Niklas Isfeldt hits some excellent notes!
"Heavy Metal in the Night"
The only song that I would categorize as truly "cheesy" lyrics. That being said, it's still a good tune that I enjoy listening to.
I strongly suggest this album to anyone who likes Power, Symphonic, Melodic, Speed, Old-school, or fantasy metal. While it's a few years old (2002), I think this music shows were the genre(s) are going, and I think you'll like it as much as I do.
Awesome.......2006-11-03
I heard "The Book of Heavy Metal" Through Youtube awhile back. Although I thought it was cheesy, I had to take a closer look and after listening to it, I bought it and this album. It is really well put together and I listen to is frequently. You won't be disapointed.
Great metal album with an 80's feel.......2006-08-12
Dragon Slayer, by Dream Evil is one the best metal albums that I've heard in a long time. It's fast, hard, and powerful without all the screaming that is so common in most modern heavey metal albums. What I think is also great about it is that the whole album is a story, and you can hear it progress as you listen to it.
I personaly would recomend this album to anyone who enjoys good metal.
A Metal Feast.......2006-06-07
Alright, enough with the lyric bashing. Judas Priest has some of the most basic lyrics and they're a great band! This album is a good/bordering on great metal offering. Yes, it's not the most original album, but at least it rips! The Chosen Ones is a great tune and Losing You is a powerful ballad of sorts. \m/

The Book on Dream Evil.......2007-07-12
Dream Evil are straight forward Heavy Metal like you grew up with. I can tell these guys spent hours listening to Judas Priest, Malice, Accept, and Iron Maiden. Their songs are laden with solid chugging rhythms and fast concise leads. They speed it up at times and the singer can get to those high pitched Halfordesque screams. They aren't doing anything you've never heard before but in my opinion anyone who has a resemblence to the classic metal bands is going to help fill my shelves. Other bands to check out for solid METAL are: Tad Morose, Brainstorm, Primal Fear, and Hammerfall. P.S. My CD has a bonus DVD that's just the band in a studio screwing around and talking German, useless to me.
METAL!!.......2007-04-04
I am a metal fan. This cd is all about metal, and making metal hence
(Book of Heavy Metal, SLedge of Rock, Let's Make Rock etc.) The band has a fantastic singer, Snowy Shaw, although not phenomenal, is good at what he does which is laying down metal beats, and Gus G. is a really really good guitarist. The only thing that brings these fellas down is the lyrics. However Ronnie James Dio, The Grand Wizard of Rock and the inventor of the rock fist, made a living writing corny lyrics as well. Bottom line is that if you like generic, cheesy heavy metal(which I happen to be a fan of) these guys take the cake. I like this album, but I would consider Appetite for Destruction: Guns&Roses or Master of Puppets: Metallica to be 5 star quality albums. Nevertheless I give it a 3 because its metal...and I like it
Musically great, lyrically, well...........2006-11-08
I agree with a few of the other reviews. Musically this cd rocks! The production is excellent, the singer sounds great, the band is tight and rocks hard, but the lyrics are VERY CHEESY! If you can ignore the lyrics, it's definitely worth picking up.
Awesome.......2006-11-03
Really good album. If you like this, get Dragonslayer. It is even better.
This band is metal, this cd rocks!.......2006-10-08
I think this cd is excellent.Cliches do exist throughout but this group is sincere in what they do.These guys are being called posers by some, what a joke. The guitar work and the singing is amazing.Snowy has been playing metal for years and is certainly not a fake.I think some people feel that Korn is metal or it has to be free of any melody to be metal but traditional Metal is what these guys play.I like different types of metal myself so I am not downing other styles but I know traditional metal and this stuff is true metal.Buy it,crank it!

United WE Stand.......2007-07-12
More excellent in your face Heavy Metal from the boys in Dream Evil. They use just enough variety to keep each CD sounding fresh. They included a bonus CD with 5 additional songs in this package. Good time classic hard hitting metal. Unless you're into death, black,or doom you won't be disappointed.
Ok but not great.... fun album though.......2007-03-20
(Edit: I reviewed this before listening to the bonus CD but amazon wont let me raise the stars, but I give it a 4/5)
Like the sticker on the cover said, this is music for fans of bands like dragonforce or 3 inches of blood, that don't take themselves seriously. With that in mind it's a reasonably good album, in true power metal fashion. The lyrics are corny, they sing about how metal they are in most of the songs. But the guitar work and singing is pretty good. My favorite songs are Fire! Battle! In Metal!; Let me out; Kingdom at War, and Higher on Fire. If you see it for cheap pick it up, but don't expect to be blown away.
KICKS ASS.......2007-03-19
You're not alone with the reviews anymore. I tripped over this band while on wikipedia. Checked em out, they rock! Good stuff.
Awsome PowerMetal.......2007-02-23
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this album... 4 months after its release... unless this is a special version and i didn't realize? C'mon people! If you like Hammerfall and the like then you can't miss this release! Dream Evil are straigh up hard core power metal. They got all the cheese you would expect but they do it well, very well. Good head bangin metal right here. If you haven't experienced Dream Evil then start with the Book of Heavy Metal. This album isn't as good as that 5 star release but its still 4 stars strong! Every Song keeps you interested and the musicianship is still top notch. I still can't believe I'm the first reviewer. This album came out in Oct of 06 and its almost March of 07. C'mon... calling all metal heads! Buy (or download, he he) United by Dream Evil (and The Book of Heavy Metal if you don't already have it).

Customer Reviews:
Evilized !!.......2007-07-12
This is probably Dream Evil's heaviest CD. Every song has deep solid crunching rhythms and excellent vocals. Classic metal in the Priest style. Highly recommended for old school metal purists. Bang Your Head!!
Excellent Melodic Metal .......2007-02-13
I've been listening to a lot of Melodic- and Power-metal over the last few years. Unfortunately the bands not worth hearing are the ones that get all the mainstream publicity (if they get any). Bands like Dream Evil are often overlooked simply because their albums aren't widely available in record stores (at least in my area).
This is an excellent album from a superior melodic metal band.
I recently saw a CD from a mediocre band I've never heard of (and promptly forgot), that had a sticker on it touting them as the "saviors of swedish melodic metal." I say no savior is needed, not with awesome bands like Dream Evil and Hammerfall and a dozen others going strong.
Best Of Dream Evil.......2006-09-08
While cheesy at times, this is Dream Evil's best work and deserves all 5 stars. I can overlook the cheese because most of it kicks butt. Do not be nervous about buying it because people used the word "cheese" to describe it; it really is not that pronounced, so no worries. What you mostly get is hardcore riffs, good mid-tempo energy and music that gels nicely. If you like Heavy Metal and don't already have this, what are you waiting for?
Dreaming Evil!.......2005-09-27
I don't know what the user "A music fan" was thinking by giving this Cd a 1. Dream Evil isn't suppose to be a serious band, thats what makes it great! I don't know if this is there best, but it is still killer. If you like nice clean power metal this is the band for you.
Dream Evil's best work by far!.......2005-07-02
I'm not going to go over every detail of the CD, if you want that you can look down there at all the other reviews. I just want to point out that EVILIZED is, by far, Dream Evil's best album. It has the best lyrics out of their three--there's no dragons and/or steel, and "metal for life" themes are kept to a minimum--and the songwriting is overall better than the others too. Of course both Dragonslayer and Book of Heavy Metal have their moments, but I don't think there's a single song on Evilized that deserves less than 4 stars. Pure ass-kickage all the way through. HIGHLIGHTS: Break the Chains, Fight you Till the End, Evilized (maybe their best song,) Forevermore, Live a Lie. Children of the Night is a (overrated) fan favorite as well.
I'd recommend this as anyone's first Dream Evil album, although the very song that got me into metal was The Prophecy from Dragonslayer. That one's great too, with several amazing songs and a couple throwaway tracks. Book of Heavy Metal, their latest release, is probably their worst I'd say. More "filler" tracks, less variety, there's maybe 3 great songs from it I'd still listen to. And after the vast lyrical improvements from Dragonslayer to Evilized, the cheese has returned! Evilized wasn't like a profound journey through the human psyche or anything, but there was the occasional line that made me say, "Hmm, that's clever." Book of Heavy Metal is just all about how awesome metal is and how metal they are...
Anyway, you can go to dreamevil.se (the official site,) where they have mp3 downloads of Chasing the Dragon, Break the Chains and the video for Book of Heavy Metal. Then decide what you think.

Customer Reviews:
"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.
