is just like that, Danzig lose his inspiration so he is recycling, this is far the best album since IV, but is not new, so what you gonna do enjoy the devil's hymns

5 out of 5 stars It's about time........2007-07-24

I've been waiting for something like this since Danzig 2. It has some amazing stuff. If you liked his first 3 (4?) albums you'll love this one. I rank em Danzig 1, Danzig 2, then this one.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for FANS of Danzig/Two Horns UP!!!!.......2007-07-21

I say "fans", though it should appeal to ANYONE who likes dark rock-MeTal. It is GREAT to hear the "old-style" vocals/guitar sound on some unheard(by me) songs. Also, it is great that he didn't decide to stink up the collection with a bunch of CRUMMY DISCO SONGS(like off of "Blackacidevil"....c'mon, how insulting to fans THAT album was!) There are only honestly 2 clunkers on here(in my opinion) and one of them happens to be a CRUMMY DISCO REMIX of "Unspeakable"...the other is the tedious "Buick McKane", though I can see it's appeal to some people. No need to go into the various tracks, they've been well-delineated(though sometimes unfairly/erroneously) on other reviews. I just want to add my vote of EXCELLENCE!!!! And DON'T get any pre-concieved notions about "White Devil Rise"; if nobody told anyone the backstory, they'd never know that it is written in retalliation to remarks made by one of the most psychotic, racist PIGS in the history of earth! Something for everyone on here, from Glenn's BEST-ever ballad("Cold, Cold Rain") to just plain heavy ROCKin' tunes like "Soul Eater"...let me say that I've been rather ambivalent to his releases since #4(though I think #6 is a very strong album, despite the taint of electronica), but I am BLOWN AWAY by this collection!!!! And the cover of the booklet is SUPER-COOL! I imagine that SOME may find it "distasteful", but let's keep in mind Glenn's penchant for comic books, babes, and things wicked. TWO HORNS UP, GLENN!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good but unfortunately not great..........2007-07-20

First of all, I am a big Danzig fan and own ALL of his CDs. Like most fans my favorite Danzig's CDs are 1-4 (All worthy of 5 stars in my book). The first Danzig CD I purchsed was Lucifuge... when I first heard it, I was addicted! Even on his later releases, I am able to find something to like about each album (I know they weren't very good but at least he was trying something different and experimental... which takes guts).

That being said, I am dissapointed with The Lost Tracks. I admit I "liked" approximately 7 songs (Soul Eater, The Mandrake's Cry, You Should Be Dying, Warlock, Lick The Blood Off My Hands, Crawl Across Your Killing Floor and When Death Had No Name). But unfortunately the other songs sound like album filler, B sides or demos. Personally, for me, it was not worth the high cost of the two CD set. If you can buy it used for half the "new" price than get it if you are a Danzig fan - Just my hunble opinion.

***An interesting side note... I ripped the album to my hard drive the day it came out and the next day I went to trade it in at my local CD store for a store credit. They already had 9 "trade-ins"... Hmmmm...

5 out of 5 stars this is true metal.......2007-07-19

what i like about danzig is that he doesnt repeat himself, for this reason this 2 cd set shows the progress that danzig made from the 80s till today my fav danzig era had always been the early 90s on this cd its not just the 90's or what ppl say that the classic line is the best that danzig had ever had the most powerful songs are all over the 2 cds i cant make a choice but i recommand you buy this 2 cds in order you can experince true metal.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Danzig.......2007-07-18

This album is not as deep, in terms of great songs, as other Danzig albums. However, the classic Mother has to be owned.

5 out of 5 stars the best.......2007-06-18

THIS IS ONE OF DIRTIEST MOST EVIL ROCK ALBUM OF ALL TIME !!! EVERY THING IS PERFECT - FROM THE ALBUM SLEEVE TO THE RICK RUBIN PRODUCTION TO THE RIFFS & LYRICS AND DRUMS. ITS A MIXT OF OLD ACDC - WITH EVIL ELVIS ON VOCAL !! I SAW THEM IN 92, THEY HAD THE BEST DRUMMER EVER MR CHUCK BISCUIT.I WOULD SUGGEST BUYING DANZIG 2 AND DANZIG 3, ALL 3 ALBUMS ARE GOOD FROM THE 1ST TO THE LAST SONG (+ ITS ALL THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS) AFTER
THAT, DANZIG WENT ALL TECHNO AND I LOST INTEREST. I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT DANZIG

5 out of 5 stars Danzig rules! 5/5 stars.......2007-04-29

I bought my copy at circuit city I thought the lyrics were obscene considering for some reason they have a parental advisory logo displayed in front of the album cover but the lyrics were perfectly clean. My most favorite songs MOTHER ive heard that song years ago and it was awesome and TWISTED CAINER the guitars in this song sound bad a**.

4 out of 5 stars Uttuerly Chessey.......2007-03-30

Glenn Danzig is an old man with no sense of humor. The music was fine, too bad he's an old man with no sense of humor. Apparently Danzig's fans have never heard of something called a date, which would explain the apparent homosexuality rampant in the metal scene a la Rob Halford. And it's out of print, too; gee, I wonder, you think this is still the 50s?

5 out of 5 stars dark and awesome.......2007-02-18

This is the first CD I ever bought from Danzig. I had heard the Misfits before and knew only vaguely of Samhain. This was in 1992. I found this at a used place for 5 bucks, gave it a listen and loved it from the first chords of Twist of Cain. This album is filled with power chords, pounding drums and some nice bass work. The vocals and howls on this album might have been recorded in the woods on some moonlit night.

These are 10 great songs, sequenced perfectly. I can't imagine these songs in any other order. This is high quality metal that was somehow passed over by the mainstream. This album was a million times better than any 80's hair band who dominated the charts at this time (1988). However, the bad thing is that the chosen single, Mother, used to be a good song. I loved it until MTV played the death out of it in 1994. This is the only song by Danzig that many radio stations even play. GRRRR>

The music on this album is played with all the power and intent relevant in the lyrics. The ending part of 'Twist Of Cain' is the best, plodding by slowly. The ending part of 'Not Of This world', which builds up to a nice huge ending which immediately merges into a two cymbal crash that begins the nice bluesy beat that begins 'She Rides'. Soul On Fire (along with End Of Time) are great songs that start quiet and become nice and loud and aggressive. Am I Demon is the best track here and all the more powerful when done live. Possession starts with a howl of desperation that would make your skin crawl. The album ends with The Hunter, a nice song about a stalker (haha) and a great little song called Evil Thing.

All in all, there is not a bad song here. Everything about this album screams 'instant classic.' So if you're into any kind of metal or gothic rock this should be in your collection. If it's not, I would think you'd been living under a rock. Add this to your collection this minute. This is a five star album, without doubt!

4 out of 5 stars A must own.......2007-07-18

This album is a truly great display of musical talents. The bluesy I'm the One demonstrates the talents of Mr. Danzig's vocal abilities. Long Way Back from Hell is a classic Danzig metal song. While the pounding beat of Girl is one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful showcase for Glenn Danzig's incredible voice.......2007-04-03

This CD has been one of my favorites for 17 years, ever since it came out. It was my first exposure to Danzig... despite being a fan of the Misfits before finding this disc, I somehow missed the first Danzig disc. The sound of Danzig the band and of Glenn Danzig's haunting, gorgeous voice are at their best on this CD. I think this is the absolute best Danzig album, with their first release as a close second.

5 out of 5 stars great second album.......2007-02-18

This album was released in 1990. This was before anyone on MTV even knew who Danzig was. It's a real shame because this album was as good, if not better than anything that were playing at that time.

These songs are a bit different than the first self titled album, but are still filled with darkness and shadows. Again, these are 11 great songs in perfect sequence. The first three songs on this album are all merged together which makes it even better to listen to. It's too bad the entire album was not presented this way. The songs here are performed a bit different, adding alot of acoustic blues (I'm The One is the best example) 777 is also a great song that moves back and forth between acoustic chords and heavy guitar. Blood And Tears is a nice ballad that is further explored on later albums with songs like 'Sistanas', 'Dominion' and 'Ashes'

Her Black Wings further explores the female goth angel that started with She Rides and appeared in many later songs. Girl is a great heavy song that starts with some nice deep power chords. Pain In The World is a great closer for this album that mixes all the best elements of light and heavy.

The video for this album, which has yet to see DVD release is also worth checking out. It's a great accompaniment to this CD and filled with dark yet compelling images. So check out this CD and the video if you can find it. This is yet another 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars you know what..........2007-01-29

I think this is some excellent stuff here. I completely agree with the reviewer that said if Jim Morrison and the devil collaborated this is what it would be, because this is exactly what it sounds like. Dark, poetic lyrics with a morrison-esque voice.

I was interested in Danzig because I remember Lacuna Coil saying they were going on tour with him and they called him a metal legend, etc. and I had never heard of them. Tried seeing if he had a myspace but he didn't so I could take a listen, then yesterday I was in a disc replay store and spotted this cd for 4 bucks and I was like, "what the hell? Why not?" and then popped it in and loved it. This is just good quality music that is trapped somewhere between rock and metal. MUST BUY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars better than danzig 1.......2006-12-01

this is a great listen and better than danzig's debut release in my opinion. of course i like everthing glenn danzig has released from the misfits to samhain to danzig...the man is a musical mastermind. anyways...my fav track on here is blood and tears because its alot slower than his usual stuff but still somehow pulls you in. all of the tracks have something to offer though.

5 out of 5 stars The best Danzig!.......2007-07-18

If this album were just one song, it would be a must have for any true Danzig fan (or metal fan for that matter).

Left Hand Black is one of most intense songs of all time. Its vocals are terrific and the actual music is flat out insipring.

Of course, their are other great songs on the album. But Left Hand Black is potentially one of the greatest songs of all time!

5 out of 5 stars old.......2007-05-25

This album is so frickin old, kiss your career goodbye in the next 3 definately 4 years.

5 out of 5 stars another classic .......2007-02-18

This album is one of his best. I reviewed this once before, but it never showed up here. So here I go again.

First off, this was released back in 1992. I don't remember alot of the music from the time being particularly memorable. Some of it was. This was when grunge started to become all the rage and I would have sold my arm to hear something else, anything else.

This album, though not a million seller, was virtually ignored. This really deserved a wider audience.

Anyway, to the songs. Godless is one of those dark songs that caught me instantly. The opening drums and the guitar riff are just amazing. The song then slows down a bit being punctuated with great chords and little drum fills. The lyrics to this are not as sacrilegious as the title suggests. The spoken words at the end of the tracks are more like poetry and a bit spooky.

Anything is a great mix of light and heavy and remains one of my favorite tracks. It's written and sung very well. Bodies is a bit annoying for me. It is a great song and the lyrics are very dark, but something about it doesn't feel right to me. Maybe its the production. I don't know

How The Gods Kill starts out very quiet and once again the dark lyrics bring many images to mind. This gets nice and heavy in the middle and ends as quietly as it started. Dirty Black Summer is one of the best songs here. I love the spooky, windy type sound that starts this track.

Left Hand Black is lyrically one of the best. I wish the music were a bit different though. It sounds to me like it could have used a little quiet part in the middle, but instead it just has a little section of bass and drums playing instead. Heart of the Devil starts with just Danzig's voice before the music kicks in. This has a good vibe to it and his voice is in fine shape here.

Sistinas is a nice slow song that never really gets heavy. Almost any heavy band out there can produce a song like this. This almost sounds like a love song, but careful examination of the lyrics reveal it as something much darker. I'll leave it to you to figure out. Do You Wear the Mark is another of my favorite tracks, the lyrics and music working very well together.

When the Dying Calls is the ending track here. I don't like this as much, but it's still a decent song. The lyrics are well written, but compared to the closer on the previous albums still one falls a bit short.

One more note on the cover art. I am a huge fan of HR Giger and this painting for the cover was a very good idea. Alot of his work is like this so if you're interested at all just Google his name and look up some images.

This is five stars. There are a few weaker songs here, but no bad songs. If you're into Gothic type rock you should already have this. If you're interested in goth rock and want to know a bit about it, this is a great place to start.

3 out of 5 stars Dont read reviews by Justin Paxton.......2006-11-29

I couldnt hold my tongue any longer...any reviewer who thinks Metallicas Master of Puppets sucks and gives The Geto Boys a rave review has no frigging business anywhere near metal. This bonehead hates Bob Dylan, I guess he never took the time to read any of the lyrics to some of the old gems. Im sorry but dude just stick to reviewing rap albums and save us the negative bull****!

5 out of 5 stars One of my alltime favorite albums.......2006-08-23

Basically this is one of those albums that even though is different from the traditional metal and punk style it still come out great. This album is basically a throwback, to the beginning stages of metal in the 70's, and some thrash elements from the 80's, along with some blues and some some satanic songs and you got top notch album. Glenn Danzig has a crooners voice which sounds melodic but the raspiness of his voice gives a scarier edge at times that could give a haunting voice at times.John Christ's guitarring is great from crushing, melodic riffs and great solos, almost Iommi-esque style. Chuck Biscuits drumming actually has grown on me, here he nessesarily overuses the double bass drum but he still came up with great drumming patterns. EErie Hun, bass is audible, and sometimes adds jazzy style bass licks at times.

Many songs here are dark, gothic like and satanic at points, the slow tempo of some songs are haunting and then kick up steam. Some almost feel like a thrash assault. Basically this album is hard to find one bad song, because I enjoyed the whole album, but my picks on Danzig 3 are Left Hand Black(fav track) Dirty Black Summer, Anything, Bodies, How the Gods Kill, Do you wear the Mark, Godless and Heart of the Devil. Pick this album up, ypu wont be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Post-Misfits dark metal.......2005-11-08

Glenn Danzig gained notoriety as the singer for the Misfits and continued his goth metal "I'm a really evil guy" routine with Danzig. This is a raw, but rocking metal CD. The guitar sound is unrefined but works with the songs and their dark tone as does Danzig's measured yowl, and they have just enough melody that you can sing along. Danzig is an evil person and he tells you that on every song. I like the songs but they could use some theme variations. Most people probably know "Mother" by now but "Twist of Cain", "Am I Demon" and "The Hunter" are strong songs as well.

5 out of 5 stars The debut to make the debuts of other bands suck!.......2005-10-07

Danzig's self-titled debut album is my favorite album from Danzig. Every song is its own masterpiece! My favorite track on this very wonderful album was "Posession". I recommend this album for any metalhead, blues lover, or classic rock 'n roller! Whatever someone may price this CD, it is worth it most DEFINITELY!

2 out of 5 stars Uh huh huh - he's all shook up........2005-09-14

Twist of Cain is fine, some of this is beyond parody. Neat album cover though - don't get stuff like that with MP3 eh? Overall, don't waste your money - form your own band.

5 out of 5 stars CANNOT NOT GO WRONG W/ DANZIG.......2005-06-23

I have been a danzig fan for years, every band he has been in has been great from Misfits, Samhain to Danzig, I own every danzig album, I have not been disappointed with any of them. The best Danzig albums are Danzig II: Lucifuge, Danzig IV. This album is very good it has one of my favorite songs, Twist of Cain, I enjoy at least 90% of this album, it is a very strong album. Danzig has a great voice and awesome lyrics..Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Why the explicit content label???.......2005-06-18

I'm just going to get this out of the way because it really frustrates me when they do this. I understand that Danzig's dark and evil music has never gone too well with concerned and controlling parents, but there are absolutely NO swear words to be found on this album - none at all. The reason this bugs me is that I have heard so many records in which cuss words dominate the bulk of the lyrics (i.e. Sepultura's Roots) and yet no Parental Advisory sticker is to be found on the inlay booklet. This tells me that the music advisory board is not doing a very good job of determining what is and what isn't appropriate for certain age levels. On another topic, I love this album.

Danzig (former member of the Misfits and Samhain) premiered in 1988 with this excellent masterpiece, the self-titled debut. Spawning the hit single "Mother", the album went to sell millions of copies worldwide (particularly after the live single of "Mother" was released in 1993). Offering a hard Sabbath-esque metal sound, with the sludgy, gritty pre-Nirvana stoner rock of the time, Danzig would go on to become quite a legend in the world of metal (being one of the headliners of the very first Ozzfest), and gained a large cult following with this release alone. Songs like "Twist of Cain" and personal favorite "Soul on Fire" display brooding lyrics and questionable imagery. Glenn Danzig's vocals, resembling a "metallized" Elvis Presley, are very catchy - probably the best vocals of this sub-genre next to the Ozzman himself. Pounding drums, sludgy riffs and groovy bass all come in to complement - but Danzig's soloing is where the music truly shines.

Following the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy, Danzig truly revolutionized the gothic music scene. If you want to hear the archetype that would determine the sound of bands like Type O Negative and Love Like Blood, look no further.

This is a masterpiece of a composition, an atmospheric journey into darkness. Worth checking out.

1 out of 5 stars What the???!!!!!.......2007-04-27

I am so upset. Black Aria was cool, so I thought this would be a good follow up, but was I wrong! Basically anyone could have made this crap. Totally uninspired and boring. Repetitive melodies that a 9 year old can hum. I cant believe he is charging full price for this! Dont waste your money, stick with the first one.

3 out of 5 stars good but repetitive.......2007-02-24

I probably shouldn't be writing an in depth review here. I have only listened to this CD four times since I bought it and that was back in October. But here goes.

This is a good CD, but can be a bit boring. The opening track is good for about 40 seconds, but then repeats itself. There are absolutely no melodies or harmonies here at all. Many of the songs start strong and atmospheric but really have no where left to go, and can only be repeated.

There are some nice drums in a few of the songs, but I wish they were a bit more powerful and strong. They seemed very subdued to me. There are even some vocal effects on this album that, while interesting and different, are just repeated almost endlessly. Do I need four minutes of Danzig quietly vocalizing a sound like a cow that wants to just be put out if its misery?? ...woooo....ahhhhh?? Hell no.

Don't get me wrong, this is great and interesting stuff, but there's just too much repetitiveness here. If he had taken to time to write an actual melody or edit these songs down this would have been a million times better.

But I still can enjoy this for what it is. This music tells a good story, just not very well and not with anything hummable or easy to remember. I can't even remember the way the music goes.

So while this is good, there are a million other Aria's out there that are much better. I still give this 3 stars because its good backround music. Maybe someday I'll edit this thing down to about 20 minutes and make it more listenable. Barely.

5 out of 5 stars True music of your inner demon!.......2007-02-08

This is great atmospheric music for an erie wedding cerimony, or for performing sacrificial rituals for "The Great Old Ones." The voices on this Cd remind me of imprisoned souls who cry out in anguish and pain as they beg to be released, and yet they go unheard, and I feed on their pain, and I feed well. I butter my bread with delicious pain, and this Cd is the perfect example. If you're composing a dark Opera, and want something to help you on your composition, then this Cd is for you. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Entrancing..........2006-12-17

This is precisely atmospheric music for an eerie embience. Haunting instrumentations go floating into the atmosphere with an etheric grace, manifesting the phantasmagoric muse from antiquity's thrall. A memorable melody underlies the opus throughout, beginning with 'Overture: Winged Night Demon'.

Black Aria II has a very Egyptian/Middle-eastern feel to it, almost 'Necronomicon'-like, wherein one can picture spiraling pillars in some temple of flesh, flickering torch-light upon sinfully hypnotizing contortions, hidden away in ancient wind-blown dunes, where unspeakable horrors emerge from abyssal archways to embrace and consume.

'Unclean Sephira' features a very Diamanda Galas-like voice beckoning the listener to invigorating terrors; 'Bridal Ceremony of The Lilitu' is definitely the gem of the opus, where the strains of the organ blast forth only to give way to a regally demonic procession in all of its unholy splendor. Immediately blending into a spectral dance, both compelling and repulsive; 'Shiddin' unleashes the beast across the sands of time, where shadowy warriors take upon black stallions with sabres, and strange creatures rise from spilled blood from crevasses to devour mortality. 'Zemaragad' employs the theremin to create that quintessential spooky sound for delightful chills and evocative thrills.'Abandonment/Recreation' lends an impression of generating dark forces by chanting echoes from a fathomless pit; Beware the 'Lamia' who will draw your life with a kiss - the music presents a conjuration nicely.

Black Aria II definitely delivers that enthralling darkness we find so pleasant, where visions are projected from deep within the subconscious painting the black canvas with wickedly captivating forms of wonderfully ghoulish fear and lust.

According to mindset, this opus is quite different from the first, which musically illustrated Milton's epic Paradise Lost. Black Aria II definitely accomplishes its particular theme thuroughly.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the end of everything!!.......2007-07-29

One of the songs on this Cd should be used as my entrance music when I go to war against Mr. McMahon. This Cd is the soundtrack to "The End Of Everything." This is music that no Christian scripture, and no amount of exorcism will free you from. Once you buy this, you're trapped in the music forever.

This Cd contains nine tracks that tell you a story, and can wrap you up in the blanket of darkness. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Danzig.......2007-07-26

This is a masterpiece. Glenn Danzig shows that he can compose music outside of the Misfits/Samhain/Danzig realm with this moody orchestral composition. Worth getting to say the very least. BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars decent album.......2007-07-15

I bought this album because I am a huge fan of The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig. I didn't know what to expect.

Musically this album absolutely rocks! It's heavy and very punk but can also be melodic at times.

I am not really a fan of AFI. I know what some of their songs are about (horror punk rock) and even saw them live once back on the Danzig/Samhain tour back at the end of 1999. While they were great live (and the pit was moshing 2 seconds before the music even started) the vocals never really did it for me. I was used to Danzig's rough growl. While I didn't hate it, it was a bit different.

This CD is good but the vocals really don't do it for me. I don't hate the vocals, I just wasn't used to them. They are not so bad now.

Davey Havok wrote all the songs here. For the most part they are dark (how I like em) and the only really bad song here is Invocation. The music for it is great, but the lyrics seem very uninspired and kind of flat. But the rest of this CD is amazing.

Of Power has some great keyboards and the fast drumming by London May is incredible. Stray, Evernight and In The Hills are all a great mixture of Samhain and AFI. The title track here starts a bit slow and is followed by two even better songs in Satiate and Of Man.

Michael is clearly the best song here. The writing is awesome and this is Davey's best vocal. Purevil wasn't quite as good as the other songs, but still decent. And Invocation I have already commented on.

So i can imagine that any AFI or Samhain fan has this already. If not, I would suggest picking it up even if you're a fan on both bands or only one of them. This is a good solid CD. 4 stars for this.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2007-02-14

This CD is so weird that it's just awesome! i love it, it's addictive. it's a perfect combo of people for this band. i swear that i read that the lead singer of the misfits was in this, but i'm not sure. i don't see or hear anything about him in it... :( oh well, awesome CD.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!.......2007-01-13

It's only been a month or two that I got this cd and it quickly became one of my favorites. Great lyrics, great vocals, great music. I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Superteam.......2006-11-03

If you like Afi and high energy music with a classic hard rock feel, then you will love Son of Sam. It's an ally of Danzig(misfits), Afi and Tiger Army. If you like any of those bands you will appreciate this cd. It's not for everyone have you..it's like fine wine, you must already have an aquired taste to like Son of Sam. If you do, you won't be disappointed. This is a classic cd in the staple of Rock. It also makes a good soundtrack while playing Doom or Halo. For those of you who know what I mean, get this rare cd before they are all gone.

5 out of 5 stars one of my all time fav cds.......2006-01-06

This is a great album, the best part is in the lyrics, though the music is good too. The lryics are meaningful, makes you think, and has its own evil but interesting philosophy on life. Listen to "michael" and if you like it, you'll probably like all the other songs. This might not be for everyone if you don't get it.

If Ozzy Osbourne is the self-anointed Prince of Darkness, what does that make Glenn Danzig? The Duke of Doom, perhaps? Since the early 1980s with the Misfits and Samhain, then from 1988 with his eponymous band, the distinctive tenor of Glenn Danzig has driven his foreboding goth metal. I Luciferi stays true to his successful, occasionally silly gloom-grind formula, as evidenced by song titles such as "Black Mass," "Naked Witch," and "Dead Inside." "Kiss the Skull" smacks of Marilyn Manson's militant "Beautiful People," though it's not as memorable, while the funeral, churchy, Type O Negative-like "The Coldest Sun" and the scorching "Halo Goddess Bone" are two more standouts. "Without Light, I Am" is a suitably spooky closer to this surprisingly strong showing. -- Katherine Turman

2 out of 5 stars So much for trusting the reccomendations.......2007-03-20

When I was in high school I loved Danzig, Samhain, the Misfits, and I listened to them incessantly. I was a huge fan of Danzig (the band) especially. I remember showing up at the CD store when it opened to buy "How the Gods Kill" (on my 10-speed!) the day it was released. All of his albums had a slightly different feel, but from the gritty "Danzig" to the more atmospheric & cerebral "4" they were all great no matter the style.

Then came "Blackacidevil". I seem to be in the majority that doesn't like this album. I actually hated it & was horrified that not only did the music (drums included) sound like they had been run through a $19.00 fuzz pedal, but that the VOCALS were too. I gave up on Danzig at that moment. Ironically, this was also about the time when I graduated college & got a real job and the acquisition of heavy metal CDs ceased to be the primary focus of my life.

Then Amazon reccomended some Danzig to me & I read the reviews of this CD, "Circle of Snakes", & "666". I found that most fans agreed with me that Danzig peaked with the 1st 3 albums & that "Blackacidevil" was nearly universally loathed. However, many reviewers were calling this CD and the next ("Circle of Snakes") a return to form. I believed, & I bought this one just to see if maybe it wasn't too good to be true.

Here's the truth in a nutshell. Glenn isn't singing like he used to. Some people say he can't physically do it. Maybe that's just a rumor, but even if he can still belt it out, he obviously doesn't want to, because his style is much more subdued here. Also, it is obvious to me at this point that John Christ, Eerie Von, & Chuck Biscuits were part of the songwriting process for the first few albums, because the "feel" of those albums versus everything else he has ever done, from The Misfits to Samhain to "Blackacidevil" (which represents the 1st album without them in the lineup) is radically different. This album doesn't out-and-out suck like "Blackacidevil" did, but if it were the 1st thing I had ever heard by him I would never have bothered to check out anything else. It has a few decent songs, but nothing worth buying the album for, in my opinion.

I may check out his next one which is supposedly going to be a blues-based collaboration with Jerry Cantrell. I won't bother with "666" or "Circle of Snakes" unless I find them used for a couple bucks. It's a shame that he can't get the old band back together again though.

4 out of 5 stars a mixed bag.......2007-02-24

This is one of those albums that's both good and bad. Some of the riffs are incedible, but it seems like its performed a bit by the numbers. 'Black Mass' is easily too long and should have had a shortened intro. Even adding a few tympani hits or something to the beginning would have helped.

That's only a minor complaint. The rest of this album is suprisingly good. It was almost a return to form. The next album would achieve this. It seems to be that it took two albums (6 and this one) to get back to the sound he had for the first albums.

'Wicked Pussycat' is not a good song however and should not have been used for the 'single'. 'God Of Light' is a great little rocker but 'Liberskull' is a bit overlong and not well written. To make up for this 'Dead Inside' is a great quiet song that gets nice and heavy. I personally think the rimshots over the quiet parts are a bit too forceful and should have been played alot softer. It would have given the heavy part much more weight. 'Naked Witch' has a great riff and a wonderful drum solo bit at the end. 'Angel Blake' is another great song. Just listen to Joey Castillo's drum fills on this one. Incredible!

'The Coldest Sun' is one of the better songs here. Halo Goddess Bone is another strong song. But the best is saved for last (of course) and 'Without Light, I Am' is a great ending to this album.

So this is a strong album, if a little bit uneven. But once again, because of the great sequencing of these songs, the bad songs don't seem so bad when surrounded by better songs. And the three strong songs at the end make the album end on a high note (or three).

The songs are a bit better here and so is the production. But 25 plus years of screaming has taken its toll on his voice. So only 4 stars for this one. But this album is still worthy of a listen. So pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Inconsistent but damn good Danzig.......2007-01-06

For me, you won't find better Danzig song's than Black Mass and Kiss the Skull. Perfectly exectued darkness. Lovely. That said, I also like Dead Inside, I Luciferi and Halo Godess Bone which has a sick riff. The rest are mostly average.. but those songs mentioned above alone put this release above a large number of death metal releases out there.

Danzig is usually under appreciated - mostly because he has been around this long and his standards have been so high from the beginning. He may never reach the expectations of perfection but Danzig never fails to entertain and impress regardless.

2 out of 5 stars rob zombie's I Luciferi, featuring glenn danzig as guest frontman.......2006-06-01

i've been a rather large danzig fan and have had this cd for a long while. it was gathering dust until one day i was into a real danzig frenzy. i had thought it was cool when i first got it, so right after i finished listening to danzig 4, i put this one right on. this album really is a bad example of stubborness.(like someone else mentioned)i think the reviewer who stated that he should ditch the nu-metal and go acoustic is very right. i mean, circle of snakes is an awesome album, not nearly as lame as this, but again nowhere near the greatness of the first 4. just look at the cover and linear notes. that says rob zombie right there! who else poses with naked chicks in heavy face make-up besides rob zombie? cirlce of snakes does that too, but at least the music is ten times better.

save your money for the first 4 danzig albums...or better yet, get some samhain cds!

2 out of 5 stars These people are crazy.......2006-03-27

I think Danzig is the finest artist of the last 30 years, but even I had to draw the line somewhere. This album is weak. There is no feeling at all in it. Glenn is just going through the motions. He realized that going industrial was a mistake and this was his attempt to go back to having a traditional band sound. There are only 2 or 3 songs worth anything.

This double-disc dose of Danzig delves into the dark past of these dramatic metal miners, with 28 live performances stretching from 1992 to 2000. A portion of the set features the classic lineup of guitarist John Christ, bassist Eerie Von, and drummer Chuck Biscuits on such august cuts such as "Dirty Black Summer," "How the Gods Kill," and "Left Hand Black," all recorded, appropriately, at a 1992 Halloween gig. Singer Glenn Danzig's aggro, dark passion matches his band's surprisingly raw and punky sound, though Danzig's Jim Morrison inflections on the portentous likes of "Pain in the World" and "Little Whip" are palpable. Disc two consists of material recorded in 2000 with guitarist Todd Youth, bassist Howie Pyro, and drummer Joey Castillo aboard for versions of "Twist of Cain," "She Rides," and the band's biggest hit, "Mother." On the downside, the sound quality is somewhat shoddy and unbalanced, especially on the second disc. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars partly good, partly bad.......2007-02-03

This album is a mixed bag. The first CD is great. The halloween show from 1992 sounds much better than the 4 songs they mashed together on the Thrall Demonsweatlive EP which were taken from the same show. I would have rather had them release the entire performance from that night, but you can't have everything.

The 1994 show has excellent sound. Unfortunately, some songs are missing here. It was nice to see that Bringer of Death and Little Whip are here. These had been available before on a CD single for I Don't Mind The Pain, from his fourth album. But another CD single from that album, Cantspeak, had live material from this same night that was not added. This included Twist of Cain and Dirty Black Summer. These were obviously left off to avoid repetition which is a real shame since they are great performances.

The second disc is from the 2000 tour. I was lucky enough to see them perform in Nov of 99 and this is a good set list. The sound quality leaves a bit to be desired and the volume and production were not balanced. This could have been edited together much better as well. Some of the cuts between these songs are just terrible. However, the songs for the encore (all taken from the first album) are great to hear. And it's terrible that they ended this CD with Mother. It's a good song, but has been overplayed so many times that i can barely stand to hear it anymore. They could have ended with Earth AD, which is a great Misfits track that they ended with on this tour.

So in the end, the first CD gets played alot more than the second. So if you're a hard core fan you have this already, no matter what. If you're a casual fan who wants to hear some live Danzig, this may be for you. But see if you can download it first.

4 out of 5 stars not the worst.......2007-01-24

after reading the first two reviews i thought this cd was gonna be bad then i read the other reviews and that convinced me to buy it, the cd is not bad at all especialy disc one its a realy great cd the only complaints is disc two when danzig sing in certian songs it sound like hes taking the mic away from his mouth but thats how Evilive and Samhain Live were so im used to hearing that with live danzig songs, its worth 25 bucks but i probly woudnt pay more for it

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-08-06

I've read all the negative reviews on this and must admit it steered me away from this CD until now. I finally broke down and purchased it. I must say it isn't as bad as the majority puts it off to be. The first disc is absolutely fantastic, and well worth the cost of both Cd's. The second disc is a bit disappointing, but not entirely too bad. I just consider it a bonus disc for the first one. Anyway if you are a Danzig fan give it a try. Ive heard much worse live albums (i.e. Black Label Society- Alcohol Fueled Brewtality).

4 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected.......2005-10-22

After reading the reviews of this CD, I was a bit apprehensive of buying this as I was expecting it to sound terrible. It DOES NOT sound terrible in any sense at all. The first disc has the rest of Demonsweatlive that I really wanted to hear and is actually mixed a little different. Kind of bassier. The '94 stuff sounds good too. Disc 2 sounds like a good soundboard tape. Everything is audible and the tones sound good. Even the mix is really good because nothing is drowned out. What more could you want? Its obvious Danzig didn't set out to do a "live" record but the quality isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I'm glad I own this now. I just wish I went to that '92 Halloween show when I had the chance.

1 out of 5 stars Almost as bad as St. Anger........2005-06-05

Definitely the worst live album I've ever heard. The production value is horrible. You can also hear the people in the audience better than you can hear Danzig. Don't waste your money on this crap.
