Album Description
The 7th solo album from singer/songwriter Colin Hay (from Men at Work). This album shows Colin Hay at the top of his game. It is a most compelling work from a brilliant songwriter. The album has a full electric sound with lush string and horn arrangements. Undoubtedly his best album to date.
Customer Reviews:
Colin Hay is awesome!.......2006-05-11
My husband turned me on to Colin Hay as he and his best friend from high school were big "Men at Work" fans and subsequently followed his solo career. "Company of Strangers and "How Long Will It Last?" are beautiful, beautiful songs. I love the strings in "Company of Strangers"; it's a mesmerizing song. Of course, the lyrics on this CD are fantastic, as always, especially in "How Long Will It Last?"
This is my favorite CD right now. Buy it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of the songs are good. (The only one I skip is "Lucky Bastard" because I listen to the CD in the van with my 6-year-old and 4-year-old sons. They love Colin Hay and know the lyrics!
Incidentally, my husband and I were fortunate to have seen Colin Hay in concert at a club in Denver this past year. Colin is an OUTSTANDING performer -- funny, too! I can't wait to see him again!
Colin Hay at Largo In Los Angeles.......2006-04-09
Just saw Colin tonight in the tiny club Largo on Fairfax in Los Angeles where he is a egular since he lives here - He began the set acoustic and then brought on four others, including his wife. The set lasted about 2 hours and was filled with Colin's humor and an absolutely amazing array of his solo work and some MAW singles as well. I hadn't purchased any of his solo work, but after tonight, they are all part of my collection - "Company" being the favorite since he played many of the songs found here -
As Always, Good Stuff.......2005-12-30
You may find this one a bit sleepy at first, but stick with it. It's more mid- and slow-tempo than previous Hay albums like "Looking For Jack," "Wayfaring Sons," and "Topanga." On the first pass, only "Small Town Big Hell," "No Win Situation," "Don't Wait Up," and the haunting title track really jumped out at me. However, if you give it a few tries, songs like "I Got Woken Up," "Dear J," "How Long Will it Last" and the closer really start to grow on you. I started out mildly disappointed and ended up thinking it's among the best work he's ever done. It also features the third recording thus far of "Beautiful World," this one virtually indistinguishable from the version on "Man @ Work." It's a gorgeous song, though, so fine by me. All in all, a very worthy buy for fans of this underrated artist.
I provide the following as a checklist for Colin Completists who are stymied and frustrated by the lack of availability of his solo albums. If you wanna have it all, this is what you gotta get (wherever you can get it):
- LOOKING FOR JACK [1986, not commercially available]
- WAYFARING SONS [1990, not commercially available]
- PEAKS & VALLEYS [1992, available on import]
- TOPANGA [1994, available but expensive]
- TRANSCENDENTAL HIGHWAY [1998, available]
- GOING SOMEWHERE [2000, available]
- COMPANY OF STRANGERS [2002, available]
- MAN @ WORK [2003, available]
Good luck!
Colin Hay is Amazing!.......2005-08-19
There is so much to say about this extremely talented artist, but the other reviews have done such a fine job in doing so. Along with Jeff Lynne (of ELO), Colin Hay is one of the most talented, yet under-appreciated musicians of our time. And, this album is truly one of his finest compilations. Colin is one of the few artists that can bring me to tears with the beauty of his music (in a weak moment). :) Order this CD while you can and try to see Colin in concert. You'll see exactly what I mean.
colin is brilliant.......2004-04-03
well I have seen him twice in Australia in the last 4 years and he is not to be missed. The last time was in Melbourne I flew from Perth Western Australia to see him. I love all of his album but my favs are peaks and valleys , T>Highway and Going somewhere.
There are two sites that fans can visit my page at http//www.downundercom.tripod.com which has photos reviews , articles and mosaiscs on colin hay and men at work and also another site called http//www.menatwork.br.com

Customer Reviews:
Best Bad Company CD without Paul Rodgers.......2006-05-10
Easily this is the best Bad Company CD without Paul Rodgers and better than some of the CDs with Paul Rodgers. It's a shame the follow-up to this album "Stories Untold" (or wahtever it's called) was so bad.
Very great opening three-five tracks.......2006-02-23
The first five tracks are awesome. the rest of the cd is average
Bad Company Returns To Its Roots With A New Singer.......2005-02-15
On COMPANY OF STRANGERS, Bad Company replaces lead singer Brian Howe with the Paul Rodgers-influenced Robert Hart, returns to its roots in the Memphis-Chicago-Texas-St. Louis-Louisiana-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/R&B/soul/rock & roll axis, and releases its best album since 1979's DESOLATION ANGELS. Gone are all the pop affectations of the last five albums, replaced with a raw, dry sound reminiscent of the first three albums and any number of Southern boogie bands. There are numerous great rockers here, but the most riveting moment is the ballad "Little Martha", a sad tale of child mortality that reminds me of seeing children's tombstones while hiking around historical sites to get in shape for my favorite female celebrities. I'd love to ask a cute girl for a dance to this one and the first five with Rodgers, even if this girl doesn't quite fit that "little mold" that others think she should.
Bad Company - 'Company Of Strangers' (Eastwest).......2005-02-08
The very first time I ever heard this CD,I thought that MAYBE Paul Rodgers was back in the band.Okay,THAT-I admit was wishful thinking.New(at the time of this release)vocalist Robert Hart fits in quite well with the long running veteran blues hard hard outfit. Some of the better cuts here include "Where I Belong",the radio friendly "Down,Down,Down","Pretty Women" and the rockin' "Down And Dirty".Too bad Hart didn't last long with the group.I have a feeling the follow-up to this disc could've really been something.I guess we'll never really know.Bad Company had apparently reunited with Rodgers awhile after the tour for this disc.Long live Bad Co.!
DEFINITELY THE BEST BAD COMPANY CD WITHOUT PAUL RODGERS.......2004-12-22
Why they didn't have ROBERT HART in the first place, I really do not understand; however, SIMON KIRKE said both the band and ROBERT were tied up with separate things. Anyway, every song sounds a whole lot like the classics tunes of the original BAD COMPANY. For starters, the acoustic/electric guitar rockin' title track that is written by ROBERT, SIMON, and DAVE COLWELL sounds a whole lot like the 1975 classic FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE, and MICK RALPHS' slide guitar driven GIMME GIMME also sounds a whole lot like his blues driven debut hit CAN'T GET ENOUGH. WHERE I BELONG and LOVING YOU OUT LOUD are excellent piano ballads, and ABANDON AND ALONE is a outstanding ballad/rocker with the distorted vocals, guitar riffs, and FENDER RHODES piano. DOWN AND DIRTY and PRETTY WOMAN sound like MICK RALPHS and DAVE COLWELL are trading lead guitar riffs. CLEARWATER HIGHWAY, DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, and DOWN, DOWN, DOWN are also excellent guitar rock songs while JUDAS MY BROTHER and YOU'RE THE ONLY REASON are also excellent acoustic/electric guitar rock songs. However, I believe the acoustical guitar ballad LITTLE MARTHA that features ROBERT'S calm and low-pitch vocals and the orchestra is the highlight of this cd. RICK WILLS, who has played with PETER FRAMPTON, DAVID GILMOUR, and FOREIGNER is the best bass guitarist with the best sounding bass guitar the band has ever had since they moved on into the 1990s. His FENDER PRECISION bass guitar and AMPEG amp produced a excellent sound that blends in perfectly with BAD COMPANY'S music. I just do not understand why he only last one year with the band when they reformed for the second time in 2001 with PAUL RODGERS. More importantly, he had a whole lot better classic rock style and sound than that JAZ LOCKRIE with that stupid ugly sounding 5 string bass guitar on MERCHANTS OF COOL.

Here's a perplexing mystery of the Americana scene: Why the devil isn't this Virginia-based duo as well known as tradition-minded singer-songwriters Lucinda Williams, Iris DeMent, and Greg Brown? Judging from In the Company of Strangers, Robin and Linda Williams are every bit their equals. Contrary to the title, these 11 original songs (plus an exquisite cover of "Cold, Cold Heart") find the twosome surrounded by longtime friends Kevin Maul (Dobro and pedal steel), Tim O'Brien (fiddle and mandolin), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mary Chapin Carpenter (harmonies), and Stuart Gunter (drums). The songs are loving studies in the art of personal but universal songcraft: cliché-bucking lyrics of sorrowful but inevitable departure, spiritual hope, and lessons found on life's hardest journeys. Sung and played with the effortless intuition of musicians who've immersed themselves in the many streams of American roots music, this is a wholly satisfying work of melodic country and time-defying folk art. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Best ever.......2000-09-18
This is Robin and Linda's best ever (I've been buying their recordings since you could get them on vinyl). "Hard Country" is worth the price of the CD by itself, with Linda's throaty voice accompanied by the flawless musicianship of the players they've assembled for this effort. But after leading off with such a terrific song, the CD only improves. Great recording, well engineered and superbly performed.
Fantastic!.......2000-05-20
What a great CD. The quality of the recording is wonderful, but best of all is the amazingly great storytelling.
This is a subtle change for the Williams - they have a complete band (including the members of The Fine Group!) - even percussion!
I strongly suggest the addition of this great CD to your collection!
No Strangers in my House.......2000-03-10
I have all of the Williams Sugar Hill releases, and this latest one follows their twenty-year pattern of fine lyrics wedded to terrific singing and playing. This release is a bit more country-ish in feel due to fiddle whizzes Stuart Duncan and Tim O'Brien joining doborist Kevin Maul. Stuart Gunter's drumming gives the sound some punch. But what has always distinguished this underrated duo is their superb harmonizing and Linda's awesome voice. Her rendition of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart" would thaw a wooly mammoth. The Williams are also superb lyrcists, augmented by Jerome Clark. "The Hard Country,' "Rumble," and "Some Peculiar Beast" address the great mystery of fate and the devil at war in the human heart. Country music used to address such issues, oh, about thirty years ago, I guess. The Williams do it without cliche and they make it sound both universal and contemporary. I'm glad they keep making this kind of music for those of us who are not interested in the flashy dregs that pass as country artists these days.

I love this CD! I am a big fan of Irish music and this band does such a great job! I've been lucky to see them live so I have witnessed firsthand their energy, style, and enthusiasm! These things come through the CD too! This group sounds great, and if you love Irish, rock, or folk music, this is the one to buy! I've been asked many times "Who's that band?", and as soon as I say the name "Company of Strangers", they buy the CD too. It's REALLY that good.
