5 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil - The Band's Best Album.......2007-07-30

In my opinion this is the band's best album so far. Although they stick to their usual formula there are several really really good songs on this one that raise this up above their other works. My first introduction to Lacuna Coil was when I heard the opening track on this disc "Swamped" on a sampler disc from Century Media. It immediately grabbed my attention especially the absolutely killer female vocals. When I saw the band on the "Comalies" tour they opened with "Swamped" and it literally sent chills up my spine. The song is one of the best the band has ever done with Christina's vocals leading the way. This album is full of very well written songs. The single "Heaven's A Lie", "Tight Rope", "Self Deception", "Ghost Woman And The Hunter", "Unspoken", "Entwined", all really great stuff. Along with the killer vocals (well.....the female ones at least), the music is all good too. As mentioned previously the band does not stray too far from their usual formula, but there are nice touches of progressive rock, Goth, and even some quieter passages that all work really well. Unfortunately I think the band took a step backwards with their next release "Karmacode", but "Comalies" remains a very strong disc and their best so far. If you have ever wanted to check this band out, this is the album to get.

4 out of 5 stars Gothic Wonder.......2007-07-21

This is overall my favorite Lacuna CD. I first purchased Unleashed Memories and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound. However, Comalies is more of what I am looking for in a great band. I really appreciate the heavy metal sound continually contrasted with the beautiful high pitched gothic vocals. Cristina's voice quality is much better on this album and she hits more of the long drawn out high notes. Comalies overall has more of this gothic emotional sound then either of Lacuna's other 2 CDs.

The album opens with "Swamped" and I can't help but be reminded of Cirque du Soleil music from "La Nuoba". It has a haunting voice and smooth tight rock. It is probably the most beautifully down gothic songs. It is pretty mainstream and a good song to hook other listerners to Lacuna Coil.

Then there is Daylight Dancer, this song just has a smooth pummel that mixes both vocalists with a melodic metal undertone. Cristina's voice is definately the centerpiece on this track, but Andrea's voice comes in as back up vocals and isn't too overpowering.

My 2 favorite tracks are "Tight Rope and "Unspoken". "Tight Rope" again has that heavy gothic haunting sound and this song really showcases Cristina's voice. Andrea's voice is just ok and this song would probably be 5 stars if it was all Cristina or had stonger male lyrics. "Unspoken" is one of those songs that just has a catchy melody. I don't think there really is anything special, some good rock, intersting lyrics but a really stong melody that you find pulling you in.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2007-07-20

This is a really good album. This band has a lot of depth and a lot of talent. Every song is very enjoyable. There is rythm and difference between songs, I listen to these guys and they blow the new Velvet Revolver album away (Libertad). The lyrics are awesome. Sounds like I'm hyping them up, but I'm being impartial, this band has talent. I like the album actually better than Karmacode. The combination of the male and female vocals on the album is really cool, Christina Scabbia has an awesome voice and comes through very nicely and so is the lead singer guy, great voice. I would compare this album to the type of music from P.O.D. or a little bit from Type O Negative (but toned down from Type O, definitely not gothic). The guitar work is really amazing, these guys rock!! You will not be dissapointed with this album.

2 out of 5 stars Cannot hold a candle to Evanescence.......2007-06-29

This band has potential if they could record better songs. We need a few more female singers in Rock 'n Roll but there's no way in Hell that this girl or this band is even close to the talent of the band "Evanescence." The song Heaven is a Lie is about as close to a good song as these guys can get. The recording has that Janet Jackson Mish Mash where there is a lot of ground noise.....not a lot of differentiation of the instruments. The used CD stores should have a bunch of these CDs for less than $4.99 I hope this band will get rid of the male singer's influence and concentrate on writing good rock and roll and featuring the female voice in the band a lot more.

5 out of 5 stars Comalies: Amazingly great!.......2007-06-13

I own all of Lacuna Coil's music and, like all the others, I find this release
simply great. Cristina's vocals are, as usual, impeccable. And Andrea's vocals contrast so nicely with Cristina's heavenly voice.
Is this an unbiased review? not by any means.

5 out of 5 stars LACUNA COIL, EUROPE'S VERSION OF EVANESCENCE , WITH ATTITUDE!!.......2006-01-23

LACUNA COIL (Empty Spiral)

Remember that name! If I'm right,(and I think I am) you are going to be seeing it and hearing them a lot in the future.

I know, you're dubious. Lacuna Coil? What's a Lacuna Coil, never heard of them. Well if You've read any of my other reviews then you may remember that I mentioned Lacuna Coil in six of my reviews and categorically stated (actually predicted) that Lacuna Coil had an inside track to be the first European (they're Italian) Femme Fronted Goth Metal band to crash the American vinyl curtain in two of my reviews.

When I first predicted that Lacuna Coil would make it big here stateside, the odds makers in Vegas were giving Fifty to One odds that I was all wet and I wagered two root beers(I grew up in Vegas and I never bet money) on this sure shot/long shot. Now that Lacuna Coil is touring the East coast with the likes of Type 'O' Negative and Anthrax and their single "Heavens a Lie" is starting to get airtime, look out. The odds have dropped to Ten to One and I like my position.

Why do I think Lacuna Coil has such a good chance to make the charts here? For starters let me quote my 42 word prediction from the my semi-infamous Evanescence review from June 21st, "I think Italian prog/gothic metal band Lacuna Coil has the best chance of making a breakthrough since they will be touring the country this summer and fall and their hit single "Heaven's a Lie" is now getting air time on some radio stations." Next I'd like to quote my Lacuna Coil review on In a Reverie, "It seems to me that of all the wonderful goth-metal bands of Europe, Lacuna Coil has the best chance of making an impact in America. They have many songs that would not be out of place on an alternative, heavy metal or even top 40 radio format and they have a small but growing following in the states. This summer they are touring the states as the opening act for Danzig. It seems that Lacuna Coil is bigger than Danzig but I guess not in the states." Enough braggado, the reason I feel so confident in Lacuna Coil's American future is that they and all of their albums are just so damn good (I know a lot of epinionators would say fu*king here but damn works for me), that it's, well, INEVITABLE!!!

LACUNA COIL

Lacuna Coil has made a S/T debut EP and three full albums, chronologically, In a Reverie, Unleased Memories and Comalies and to be perfectly honest I can't say one is better than the other. They are the most consistent group I've ever come across.

Band Members

Cristia Scabbia (female vocals), Andrea Ferro (male vocals), Cristiano Migliore (guitars), Marco Coti Zelati (bass) and Cristiano Mozzati (drums), Marco Biazzi (guitars)

Lacuna Coil is somewhat of a non conformist for an Italian band. Most other Italian bands, like Rhapsody, concentrated on epic power metal, Lacuna Coil devoted themselves to progressive, melodic, gothic style. Lovely singer Cristina Scabbia and singer Andrea Ferro share the mic and do a very good job at it. They compliment each other perfectly and give each song a special emphasis. Cristina's voice, while not quite on a par with other European divas such as Floor Jensen, is quite pleasant to listen to. It is deeper than most and a quality that fits Lacuna Coil's music(which is somewhat progressive)perfectly. Needless to say Lacuna Coil probably would not be where they are today without Christina.

I should point out that Lacuna Coil's brand of metal is not speed or even fast. Their tempo is generally in the medium/slow to medium range, which gives it time for slow minded individuals, like me, to absorb, sort of like Creed and like Creed, the music and delivery is powerful.

"Heaven's a Lie", begins with a lush symphonic introduction, before Christina's sultry vocals along with a strong beat and Andrea's backing on the chorus's.

Other notable songs, in their order of appearance follows;

"Swamped", is an exotic medium slow song with a definite near eastern flavor, with passionate vocals by Andrea and soaring ethereal vocals by Christina.

"Daylight Dancer", is a medium tempo piece where Andrea takes the lead vocals and Christina in a ethereal mood does backup

"Humane", my vote for second best song, is a Quasi-ballad with Andrea and Christina swapping lead and backing vocals.

"Tightrope", a mid tempo song with a slight mid east feeling. For some reason this song reminds me of that fabulous Polish femme-goth metal group Artrosis but sans Andrea.

"The Ghost Woman and the Hunter", has my vote for most interesting title. Another very pretty quasi-ballad with all the trimmings. Of course, Christina could make London Bridge sound good. Seriously this is excellent.

"Unspoken", Medium pace with Christina leading to way and as with most of the songs a full lush sound and a catchy syncopated beat.

"The Prophet Said", Starting to sound a little like previous songs but still good.

"Angel's Punishment", some reviewers claim this song sounds like Garbage and it does a little. Christina does sound a little like Shirley Manson but also Medeah from Artrosis again.

"Comalies", The title track, a medium slow, quasi-ballad with a big intro but slows for the singers.

SUMMATION

If I may borrow and paraphrase the title to an old 60s song "To Know Them is to Love Them" I think that explains all. YES, BUT WOULD I LOVE THEM? Fair question and I'll answer that by saying that if you like or love any of the following bands, yes, you would love them; Evanescence, Garbage, Roxette, Pat Benetar, Joan Jett, Concrete Blonde, even Stevie Nicks.

If my "Prediction" comes through, here is my next prediction. Watch out for Within Temptation, they are already on their way. I did a review on Within Temptation's, Mother Earth (link below) back in June. They are similar to Lacuna Coil but more strident, more symphonic and generally more up tempo.

5 out of 5 stars Here it is.......2005-04-13

I have to say, Comalies by itself is not worthy of a 5 star review. It's not that it's bad music by ANY stretch, it's simply not as experimental as their last several discs. All the songs, incidentally, are very close in tempo... although the feel of songs change.

That being said, the original Comalies has some wonderful offerings, such as the first 4 tracks, The Prophet Said, etc. But the real magic in this set is in the second CD.

First off, I got this in the US domestically for the price of a normal CD. Don't let this price fool you as the only way to get this set. Secondly, I'm beginning to believe that Lacuna Coil's signature sound should not have been the stuff you hear on the radio. I think it should have been the acoustic sound you hear on the last 7 tracks of the second CD. The 12 string guitars combined with the mellowness of Cristina's voice (which at long last doesn't sound forced due to softer music), and the true range of Andrea Ferro's voice, which is nice and low, instead of the higher pitched stuff he usually "pulls off", make these songs which fans will already know a whole new experience. I actually heard the acoustic version of Senzafine before the hard version, and between the two I'll take the acoustic most days. This is where they actually shine brightest; where they never meant to. Aeon, by the way, should never have been electric based on what I heard of the radio acoustic version.

Incidentally, the videos run kind of funny, which might be only me and my friend's computers, but they're very well made, with some awesome effects and scenery. I haven't found the desktop themes... I'll have to look through that later. Buy and enjoy, folks. And stop comparing them to or with Evanescence... dark lyrics and a female voice doesn't make two bands alike.

5 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil : "Comalies IMPORT VERSION".......2005-01-13

***** - FIVE STARS

Lacuna Coil does something no other Goth Metal band has the balls to do, experiment. They don't like staying true to one sound, and on "Comalies", they've outdone themselves. This is one outstanding release. I can't find one negative thing to say about "Comalies"....

I would however have to say that "Unleashed Memories" has a harder edge than "Comalies", and is still my favortie Lacuna Coil release. Everything they've relased is excellent though, they're just one of those bands that can do no wrong....

What you get with the "Imported Version", is some really cool accustic versions off of "Comalies", and it's a wonderful change of pace when you get tired of the studio version. There are also a couple of demo/sudio version songs from "Comalies" which are incredible in their raw, uncut stages. Wonderful....

If you're new to Lacuna Coil, I'd highly recommend purchacing this, the "Imported Version" of "Comalies" over the regular version. It's alittle more costly, but you've got more songs too. Well worth the extra cash if you ask me....

If you enjoy "Comalies", pick up everything Lacuna Coil has released. They are truly an amazing band!!!!!!!

LACUNA LEGIONS FOREVER!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A good introduction into the goth-metal scene.......2004-11-09

Lacuna Coil's 3rd and best-selling album, 2002's Comalies, refines the bands sound from the previous release Unleashed Memories, adds heavier riffs with more accessible choruses, deletes the use of guitar solos, and has spawned two successful radio singles.

This is what happens when bands get popular, I'm sorry to say. The music changes for the worse. As I said, the absence of guitar solos is a big no-no, and causes some of the songs to sound bland. Cristina's vocals are still there, but do not capture the same effect as the previous album, which was significantly better in terms of instrumentalism and songwriting as well. The bass is easily obscured, and the drumming is slow and boring. Any of the progressive elements of the last two records have been thrown out, and the music has become rather predictable. There you have it, the negative.

Now on to the positive. The album does provide a change from the previous material. Not necessarily a good change, as I (and probably others who enjoyed Unleashed Memories and In A Reverie) may have grown accustomed to their old signature sound, but a change nonetheless. I must also mention the improvement of male vocalist Andrea Ferro, who, yes, is still annoying, but still sounds a hell of a lot better. Most importantly however, I find the album's accessability suitable to those who are unfamiliar with the gothic metal scene, but want to learn the basics before they progress into bigger and better things.

Now, am I saying Comalies is bad? No. Three stars is not bad in my book (actually my original review of this album was a full 5-star). Hell, this band rocked the stage at Ozzfest (they are much better live than on disc). All I am implying is that there are other lesser-known bands that have been around longer and have done better musically. I personally prefer the intricacy and beauty of After Forever and Within Temptation, the orchestral accompaniment and progression of Lacrimosa, and the experimentation of the Gathering and Nightwish. This is an opinion from someone who has familiarized himself with a numerous amount of gothic metal bands (it's my favorite genre if you didn't know) and whose tastes have evolved dramatically over the years.

So, as I said, this is a good start into the gothic metal genre. If you were to get one Lacuna Coil album though, I would highly recommend Unleashed Memories over this, as it reaches emotions not capable on Comalies (this is no exaggeration).

However, no CD has moved me quite like Within Temptation's (dare I say) perfect Mother Earth, and probably never will.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album ever!.......2004-09-05

John, if you haven't gotten the album, why review it?
Back to the album, IT F***ING ROCKS SO F***ING HARD!! This is my favorite CD EVER!!!!! Also, I saw an acoustic show last week, and they were signing autographs. When I got my stuff signed, I almost had a heart attack. I also got to shack each members' hand. When I shook Cristina's hand, I thoguht to myself "I'm NEVER washing this hand again!" Anyone who writes a negative review for ANY of their albums should have their ba||s torn off and be force-fed them. This album MUST be in your collection. Well, WTF are you waiting for? Quit reading the review and buy it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I HAVE to review this one!.......2004-10-11

If you read my reviews, listmanias, and "So-you'd-like-to" guides, you'll know that I REALLY REALLY like this album! Yes sir, this is my favorite album ever! The singing alone is worth the money for the album! The female singer, Cristina Scabbia, is EXTREMELY hott!! She is also the world's best singer, EVER!!!!!!!! My favorite songs are....
ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! Every song gets at least 1 15/10! It's THAT good! BTW, i'm so f***ing sick and tired of everyone comparing them to Evangays**t, er...Evanescence. Ev sucks ass!!! Comparing Amy Lee's voice to Cristina's is like comparing the sound of construction machines to an angel's voice! Oh, and Cristina MUST be angel! She SINGS like an angel, LOOKS like angel...she HAS to be an angel!!! Her voice is tooo good to be heard by us humans. I believe she will be mine someday.
BTW, I evan MET them! I got my copy of Comalies and a poster signed. I also got to shake each members' hand! When I shook Cristina's hand, I thought "I'm NEVER washing this hand again!" How cool is that?!?!

5 out of 5 stars dont compare crap to greatness.......2004-01-11

anyone that compares evenesance to lacuna coil needs to be smacked around. First off, lacuna has been around for a lot longer and im getting tired of people saying that lacuna coil is a ripoff of evenesance. second the evenesance album sucked

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-12-21

Lacuna Coil's latest album could possibly be considered their best. I haven't heard one track from any of their albums that I disliked. Lacuna Coil's sound is like no other. Evanescence stole their sound from Lacuna Coil. I strongly recommend that every gothic music fan purchase this cd, and I also strongly recommend that you NOT buy an Evansence CD. 5 out of 5 stars LACUNA COIL, EUROPE'S VERSION OF EVANESCENCE , WITH ATTITUDE.......2003-09-28

These Guys are going to be Big!

I've said it before so I'll say it again, watch out for these guys. They have want it takes to make it here, with great radio friendly songs and a strong label in Century Media, so look out!

They compliment each other perfectly and give each song a special kick.

            "Heaven's A Lie"

            "Oh no,
            here it is again
            I need to know
when I will fall in decay"

            "Something wrong
with every plan of my life
I didn't really notice that you've been here"

            "Dolefully desired
            Destiny of a lie"

            "Set me free
            your heaven's lie
set me free with you love
            set me free"

So goes the fist verse and chorus of Lacuna Coils's brilliant, medium paced, hit single "Heaven's a Lie", which begins with a lush symphonic introduction, before Christina's sultry vocals along with a strong beat and Andrea's backing on the chorus's.

5 out of 5 stars The Pinacle of The Coil.......2002-11-30

Simply Incredible from begining to end. I've been into LC since the 1st EP and this new 1 is amazing. Similar in sound/production to Unleashed Memories but the songwriting has taken a massive leap. The depth of the lyrics is matched by the music; LC is completely at one. I would go as far as to say that this is thier pinacle studio performance. It might take a few listens to fully absorb this sonic masterpiece. The highlight (IMHO) is "Unspoken". The 2 bonus songs are a very cool track from the Unleashed sessions is called "Lost Lullaby" (only available w/the limited digi-pak) and "the Making of Comalies" video documentary which is ok (viewable for PC or MAC). Also w/the digi is a very cool pin (LC/comalies logo, custom shaped) and a large mini-poster poster of the ever-so-lovely Cristina.

For female fronted bands that are extremely well done, I also recommend in no particular order...

the Gathering, Flowing Tears, the Dreamside, Chasing the Ghost, Theatre of Tragedy (TOT), the Shroud, Rhea's Obsession, Rose Chronicles (Kristy Thirsk from Delerium) Love Spirals Downwards (LSD), Love is Colder than Death (LCD), Nightwish, Lullachry, Aghora (extreme progressive fusion), Angelfish (pre-Garbage goth S. Manson), Sinergy (progessive metal), Chastain (progessive metal), Drain s.t.h. (similar to Alice in Chains).

            Hope this helps! :)
