5 out of 5 stars Great 1st CD band.......2007-05-20

Great songs from them, but avoid their other stuff. They changed up their sound. This CD follows your 80's hair band look. REPEAT-Avoid their later stuff.

5 out of 5 stars This Rocks.......2006-08-31

Bulletboys has always been one of my favorites. This CD has something for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Real Rock N Roll.......2006-01-03

The Bulletboys were billed as "Van Halen Wannabes" but these guys could rock. Songs like Hard As A Rock and Smooth Up In Ya are 80s hair metal staples. Every song is great, especially my favorite Shoot The Preacher Down. If you like Ratt or the Dangerous Toys you'll enjoy this rock n roll masterpiece. Singer, Marq Torien, screams and wails like no other. The guitarist, Mick Sweda, the bass player, Lonnie Vincent, and drummer, Jimmy D'Anda, are all at the top of their game. They would not release another album like this again. If you like this album, I also recommend their 2nd album, Freakshow.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few.......2005-11-07

In an era where your look became far more important to record sales than actual ability, the Bulletboys were one of a hand-full of bands able to back up their posing with some actual playing. Marq Torien wailed like Diamond Dave circa 1980 and this first album along with their 2nd offering, Freakshow, has riffs o' plenty. Buy this album, boys and girls.

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-06-08

This is when fellas knew how to play their instruments. Unlike this neo crap called "nu metal" where you just drop the e string to d and use 1 finger to play a chord (where's the heart?). Bullet Boys were NOT a one hit wonder and VH1 stabs the type of music in the back that they drooled over 15 years ago. Anyone who know their music can say they have more than just 1 hit. "Hang On St Christopher" "Smooth Up In Ya" "Rock Candy" "Thrill That Kills" I can go on and on. I got made fun of for listening to bands like this as a kid and probably still do today but I do not own a Kelly Osbourne album.

*props to the folks who dig this album*

    1 out of 5 stars don't this cd.......2007-01-17

I have purchased this cd about two months ago. I have listened to this cd for two weeks or more and I find the cd was not very good quality and recording sucks. I don't think this cd was recorded by their engineering or producers. I think it was recorded by their own road crew or one of their buddy bands. The lead guitar seem to drown out their PA monitor system in the gig and the lead singer does not sound like it was on the original cd on the first album
" Bulletboys" I remembered seeing this band at the Roxy Theater in Hollywood, California in mid 97'. The Bulletboys sound great in live concert and they sound like in original cds'. If you want to check some of the Bulletboys cds then check out their first album "Bulletboy", "Freakshow", and "Za Za". I repeat do not get the greatest hits for Bulletboys and there are two greatest hits for Bulletboys. Don't get those cds because the recording suck big times. Ok, enjoy some of those "studio" cds like "Bulletboys", "Freakshow" and "Za Za".

1 out of 5 stars This DVD sucks big time.......2006-07-20

I bought this solely for the DVD thinking it was video clips that were listed in the description...I was wrong. It's a very poor video camera (yes, singular) shot from what looks like 5 rows back on the floor and the sound quality is horrible. Save your money. Good tunes on the cd, although I already have most of them.

2 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for a comeback album.......2007-01-14

Don't get me wrong, I've liked the Bulletboys since I first saw their video for "Smooth Up In Ya" in 1988 on MTV. But this album is poorly done. Why not just make a compilation of greatest hits and be done with it? The songs do not sound the same as Torien's voice has gone to crap, and the music itself sounds like it was done in an oversized trashcan.

I'd suggest to others not to buy this album, and instead purchase a good one like "Freak Show" or their self-titled masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Braverino, but bad title.......2005-02-21

The Bulletboys are easily one of the best 3,584 bands out there today and taking all of their hits and putting them onto one disc is no easy task. I mean, there's "Smooth up in ya" and, um, some other great songs that I just can't remember right off hand. This collection nails it though. Bulletboys are in that Ratt, Britney Fox, Zebra pantheon of great metal bands that make Burt Reynolds wish he'd do another Smokey and the Bandit movie. But what's with the title? I'm a lover of cats. I have 25 of them at home. There's Washinfeet the siamese cat, Cramps the bobcat, Kurtis Blow the jaguar, Keithen McCant the tabby and 21 other cats I love more than my Zwol collection. Why burn them Bulletboys? What did the cats do to you? And picking on amputees? That's truly tasteless. Rick Allen would walk up to you and say, "I can't fell muh Ahm" and whoop you with his good arm if he so chose. So, I think the music is awesome, but I would've called the album Friskies in my pants.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BUNCH OF SONGS!!!.......2003-12-27

What an original, creative & refreshing way to present an excellent band's greatest hits collection to its fans! To not only re-record the songs (without over-producing the crap out of it, I might add) with a heavier, more raw & garage-like sound; but to reunite the original members to do so, resulted in an amazing album.

While every track is truly enjoyable, my hands-down favorite is "St. Christopher". Listen about half-way thru the tune for Marq's voice to transform from a heroin-like, out-of-it-ness; into a psychotic, eruptive scream that demands the listener's full attention. When the band's backup vocals continually repeat "Let it ride....", Marq yells "YEAH" over & over until he ends the track by seemingly nose-diving off a cliff into oblivion. Quite possibly one of recorded music's finest moments of all time.

Also, check out "THC Groove" at about the half-way point, where the Boys break into a reggae-type jam, & Marq provides perfect vocals for the occasion. Very cool.

Being a gigantic Bulletboys fan, this CD is easily one of my most-played & never seems to get old. It's just a goddamn shame that they could not all stay as the great unit they once were.

I highly recommend that any fan of good, hard rock music pick this one up!

4 out of 5 stars Still good stuff.......2001-01-23

It's true that these are just re-recordings and Marq's voice isn't as good as it was, but this is a great CD for those who have all the B-Boys CD's and want something new. The band sounds tight despite the barebones production and the remakes are often heavier and looser than the Templeman produced tracks of old. If you are a true Bulletboys fan then this is a must, trust me. If you are just curious by hearsay, then pick up the self titled CD first.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money........2000-12-27

I got this disc, excited to that I could replace CD's I'd lost at one fell swoop. I was sorely disappointed. Torien's voice isn't what it used to be; and it all sounds live, rough, and unfinished. That's fine if you want a live album, but not what I was looking for. Had I known it was re-recorded, I probably wouldn't have bought it. If you like live albums, go for it; if you're looking for the sound quality, and in particular the vocals, of the original songs, go buy the original CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked hard rock gem .......2007-04-07

THE BAND: Marq Torien (vocals), Mick Sweda (guitars), Lonnie Vencent (bass), Jimmy D'Anda (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1993) 11 tracks clocking in approximately 36 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, black & white individual band member photos, and thank you's. All songs written by the Bulletboys. Recorded at One On One Studios / Alpha Studios / Larrabee North - all in the Los Angeles area. Producer - Ted Templeman. Label - Warner Bros.

COMMENTS: You may have heard the Bulletboys were a poor man's Van Halen. Yes and no. Singer Torien had some similarities to David Lee Roth in hair, antics and swagger... and maybe a few yelps. Guitarist Sweda had some great chops, but is/was/never will be in the same league as Eddie Van Halen. Short albums like this one, matched most of the DLR era VH albums... all in the 30+ minute range. And, the last similarity might be the man behind the controls, Ted Templeman. The Bulletboys took off with their amazing 1989 debut, had mild success with "Freakshow" (1991), and then just kind of fizzled with "Za-Za". I liked "Freakshow" (and the one major hit "Hang On St. Christopher"), but years later I feel this is their weakest album. I believe "Za-Za" to be the band's deepest, most complex and varied release. Where the Bulletboys debut was straight ahead in your face glorious hard rock (a true classic of the time)... "Za-Za" has some of those same style tunes, but dared to mix it up. Highlights - the hard rockers include the humorous "When Pigs Fly", "1-800-Goodbye", "The Show" and "Fess"; the slow doo-wop "Mine"; the uplifting sweet rocker "Sing A Song"; and two of my all-time favorite BB's tracks - "For The Damned" and "Laughing With The Dead". Years later, I still pull this disc out frequently. If you followed 80's hard rock, "Za-Za" is a must own (4 stars).

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked album and band.......2004-06-10

By the time this album was released, musical tastes had drastically changed. Za-Za, was completely overlooked even by people who were previously fans of the band. This is unfortunate, because this was the best album to date by the band. Nice ballads and blues driven rockers were fairly typical of the band, but their lyrics had matured and their already impressive music talents had done the same. "When Pigs Fly", "For The Damned" and "Laughing With The Dead" stand out just as much as any of the group's hits from the previous two albums. In my opinion, there were even hints of the so called nu-metal sound that exists today. I'm not sure if Godsmack or Disturbed ever heard this album, but I'm sure this band and/or bands like it influenced the music we hear today. If you're a fan of metal, buy this album and see for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars If you are reading this..........2004-01-19

then you must be a true 80's metal fan. This is a pretty obscure album and the last major label release for the Bulletboys. Too bad that interest in this music waned by the time this album came out, Za Za really rocks and shows a little diversity in the Bulletboys sound. It still has the head-banging lighter-lifting metal songs of their first two albums but they actually tried a few different sounds on here. The acoustic driven "Sing a Song" is probably the best song on here while the bluesy ballad "Mine" shows a little different side to the glam rockers. Most songs are rough and ready rockers and if you liked their self-titled debut or their second album "Freakshow" then you should give this one a go. I still pull my copy out and throw it in the cd player every now and then just to remember what good 'ol 80's metal sounds like. Recomended for fans of Van Halen, Ratt, Kix, Warrant, etc...

    Album Description

The Bullet Boys were unfairly labeled as a Van Halen clone due to vocalist Marq Torien's (one-time Ratt guitarist) onstage antics, and their association with producer Ted Templeman. They enjoyed massive stardom on the tail end of the L.A. glam movement, but their glory days faded as fast as they arrived. Torien, guitarist Mick Sweda and bassist Lonnie Vencent had played together (briefly) in King Kobra. The three of them left that band and rounded out the Bullet Boys line-up with drummer Jimmy D'Anda. The debut album shot up the charts on its way to platinum sales, backed by the debut single 'Smooth Up In Ya', but then the band went silent. Torien had vocal troubles during the recording of Freakshow, and by the time it was released three years after the debut, the music scene had changed drastically. Fame was short but sweet for the Bullet Boys, however their debut will forever remain a sleaze classic. This Greatest Hits is remastered with sleeve notes and rare photos. Lemon. 2005.

3 out of 5 stars This is already out there........2006-01-01

This is apparently a reissue or repackaging of the Bulletboys album, 'Greatest Hits- Burning Cats and Amputees.' That album was released in 2000 on Deadline Records and reunited the original lineup of Bulletboys. On 'Burning Cats,' the band went back into the studio and rerecorded a whole bunch of material off their first three studio albums. If you need more commentary on this release, please see the reviews already online for 'Burning Cats and Amputees' (including mine).

The band sounds good on these remakes, all done in one take. If you listen closely to the album, you can see the tracks blend into each other, which makes this very close to a live album. "Talk to your daughter" and "Hang on St. Christopher" were both recorded at the same time on this session, the talking amongst the band members at the end of "Daughter" (which leads into "St. Christopher") is proof of this.

The amusing thing of this album is that the Bulletboys chose to rerecord songs they had already covered once. "Hang on St. Christopher", "For the love of money," "Talk to your daughter" and "Rock Candy" were all covered once by the Bulletboys on their first three studio albums. It is odd to discover that they chose to rerecord cover songs. The one newer track here was "Something good", recorded specifically for 'Burning Cats and Amputees' in 2000. The track listing won't generate any complaints or debates, pretty much everything on the disc is here for good reason. Any of your favorites that were left off honestly weren't important enough to include. The out-of-print 'Acid Monkey' album from 1995 doesn't have any cuts used here. However, two of the original members did not even play on it, nor did it spawn any hit singles. The Bulletboys most recent album, 'Sophie', came out in 2003, after these recordings took place, so don't expect any of those cuts here.

In all, this is a good release for the devoted Bulletboys fans. Keep in mind that it has already been released before, five years ago. Chances are, you will be able to pick up the source album, 'Burning Cats and Amputees' (2000), for a cheaper price than this. The major redeeming quality of this album, besides having their best songs in one place, is that anyone listening will recognize the Bulletboys clearly had fun rolling through this material one more time in the studio. This is the last time the original lineup recorded anything together, so it closes the book on the early years of their career.
