A Mighty Return to Sleaze.......2007-04-03

A pretty good "comeback" album after 5 years off, the 1980 Back In Black line-up playing up to their musical chops and writing songs that sound like some actual effort was put into their creation. As per normal, the much-loved (or much-hated as there is no middle ground in this debate) sleazy sex-obsessed lyrics are here in full-force (enough so to make Bon Scott smile). Regardless, this album rocked pretty hard during my junior year of high school and is still quite entertaining today. Excellent production by the great knob-twister (take that whichever way you want) Rick Rubin.

From my opinion, Ballbreaker deserves 3.5 stars, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt for a couple great songs. Otherwise, Ballbreaker is a sub-par album that is in the same vein as Flick Of The Switch, but some better songs.

1.Hard As A Rock- The best song on the album is incredibly catchy and funny as well. 10/10
2.Cover You In Oil- Okay song, pretty good beat, but not great. 7/10
3.The Furor- Great guitar in the beginning give this song an ominous feel, but it gets old rather quickly. 7/10
4.Boogie Man- Fantastic blues song that has Brian Johnson growling out the vocals while Angus provides the trademark AC/DC guitar. 9/10
5.Honey Roll- More great guitar work in the beginning of this song give it a lasting effect. Also, you gotta love the double entendre "Honey roll over, lettuce on top." 8/10
6.Burnin' Alive- The guitar in this song almost gives it a melodic feel, making it great in the process. 10/10
7.Hail Caesar- Mediocre song, but has a cool chorus. 7/10
8.Love Bomb- Kind of repetitive, not really that good. 6/10
9.Caught With Your Pants Down- Classic AC/DC jokes and great guitar work from Angus, but it's really just a
lame song. 6/10
10.Whiskey On The Rocks- Another great intro by Angus can't really help this sog from getting repetitive. 7/10
11.Ball Breaker- You think they would end it with a better song, but it's just as mediocre as some other ones on this CD. 6/10

This album is speckled with some great guitar work and catchy songs, but in actuality is just a sub-par album. A pretty fun listen though.

AC/DC.......2006-11-05

I'm only giving this albumn 4 stars, because I like about half of the albumn. AC/DC is phenomonal, but a lot of their songs sound the same. If you like raspy-voiced loud, thick rock- you'll LOVE AC/DC, and this albumn.

Not another idiotic AC/DC album..........2006-09-24

AC/DC has plenty of good albums: Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Powerage, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Razor's Edge... Ballbreaker is not one of them. That said, it is better than the crap 80's discs Flick of the Switch and Blow Up Your Video. That's not saying much, but they manage to squeeze two-and-a-half good songs out of this one: Furor and Hail Caesar for the good, plus Boogieman has a cool riff though it's pretty much a rewrite of the much-better Night Prowler. The rest is just more idiocy... it's about time they changed the mid-tempo rock with dirty lyrics formula and tried something new. Come on, haven't we heard Cover You in Oil, The Honey Roll, Burnin' Alive and Love Bomb on all those crap 80's albums? (Or even the classic ones?)

Back In Business Again!.......2006-03-25

Ballbreaker is another great AC/DC album. This is their 16th album and even though they use the same formula as number 1 this in no way sounds worn down or out of style. True as it may be this is not Back In Black or Highway To Hell, but it has many points that make it another triumph for AC/DC.

Hard As A Rock 10/10 - A great opening track and without a doubt the most popular track on the album.

Cover You In Oil 10/10 - Another great rockin track and one of my favs off the album good mid tempo rocker.

The Furor 8/10 - This Song is a pretty decent tune just not one I hit repeat on a lot of times.

Boogie Man 9/10 - This is where most people sit back and go what the heck is this, that's not typical AC/DC. This song is very blues oriented and pretty darn good at that. Another one of my favorites.

The Honey Roll 5/10 - This song is probably my least favorite on the album its kind of long and drugout not very much that I like here, others might like it, but i'm not much for it.

Burnin' Alive 10/10 - My very favorite track on the whole album, it's not very fast or heavy, but the guitar riff in this song is kickin'. Reminds me of the guys just sitting around jamming. Good track!

Hail Caesar 10/10 - Another favorite, this was one of the three singles off the album ( the other two being Hard As A Rock and Cover You In Oil )this song is straight ahead AC/DC rock n roll awesome from start to finish.

Love Bomb 5/10 - This song has never really grown on me for some reason maybe I have not listened to it enough or maybe it's just not that great. Brian sounds tired and kind of forced on this song, not very memorable.

Caught With Your Pants Down 10/10 - Awesome rock n roll song one listen and you'll be hooked typical AC/DC and that's why it's so great!

Whiskey On The Rocks 8/10 - Slow-paced rocker, good tune but kind of lacks energy.

Ballbreaker 10/10 - Last, but certainly not least in any way, this is another straight ahead rocker and another great song, good way to close out the album for the guys.

All in all Ballbreaker is not Back In Black or even Highway To Hell for that matter, but it sure is heck is better than any of the crap they call rock n roll today. Maybe some of the bands today should pick up a copy and play it for non stop at max volume. Long Live the THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER!!!

This is classic AC/DC, all bluesy rock is here in a pure way that only these guys know how to do, its true that AC/DC is a band that hasn't changed anything from their style and thats great! they remain true to themselves

Starts Off Strong,Ends Snoring.......2007-02-02

Ac/Dc had released a great CD called 'Fly On The Wall' filled with memorable sing along hits and some darn fine videos,the follow-up 'Blow Up Your Video' had a couple real strong songs and the rest filler...this was followed by the huge comeback release 'The Razors Edge' which showed that this band was still capable of great things and then came this one,'Ballbreaker'
I bought this the week it came out and was very encouraged by the first single 'Hard As A Rock' which rocks as hard as any Ac/Dc song,it was fantastic,the next song 'Cover You In Oil' was absolutely everything an Ac/Dc song should be,great catchy melody,great Angus solo,Brian's screaming vocals,extremely sexually charged lyrics and best of all a beat that would make any woman in a ten mile radius want to get up and shake what she's got on the dance floor (the hallmark of any great Ac/Dc song)
but what happens after that? Did they lose steam or just not care? 'The Furor' is boring and seems very repetitive,'Boogie Man' has some cool lyrics and atmosphere but it feels like we've heard it before,'Burnin' Alive','Hail Caesar','Love Bomb','Caught With Your Pants Down' and 'Ballbreaker' almost leave me yawning,the music is so repetitive,the songs lack the sing a long charm of most of their past albums,and in fact the majority of this release sound as if it was songs from 'Blow Up Your Video' I will say this,'The Honey Roll' and 'Whiskey On The Rocks' are great songs that have the same feel as songs from their breakthrough 'Back In Black' but it's too little too late to save this album,I will cut them some slack because it's very hard to be writing new music since the mid 70's with the same feel and the same style,and sure,it's bound to get a little repetitive but I think this one is one of their worst

The Upside - 'Cover You In Oil' alone is worth buying this CD,'Whiskey On The Rocks','Hard As A Rock' and 'The Honey Roll' are all great classic Ac/Dc tunes...Angus' solos are still top notch throughout,Brian Johnson can still scream right up there with anyone,and the rhythm section is as tight as can be...the production is very good,much warmer then 'The Razors Edge'

The Downside - Weighed down by far too much filler material,I find myself grabbing the CD cover several times to see when it'll be over,the songs all kind of melt into one another (not a good thing) to the point where you wonder where one ends and another begins

The Bottom Line - All true Ac/Dc fans should buy this,there are enough great songs on here to make it worth your time,but if you are not a huge fan I would pass this one by,definitely not a CD to play for someone new to the band,if you are new to Ac/Dc I would recommend starting with 'Back In Black' 'Highway To Hell' and Dirty Deeds,then move on to the rest of the catalog...it's not a horrible CD but it's certainly not nearly their best...Donutman says so!!!

Contender for AC/DC's worst album........2006-10-27

Now, while I'm not necessarily in the "AC/DC's worst album is better than any other band's best album" camp, it's actually surprising how generally GOOD this album is, and yet when you put on any other AC/DC album after it (I have them all) you realize the others tend to be better.

There are some really nice things about this album. First, Phil Rudd is back playing. I love his playing. He's ample proof that good drummers matter, even if the drumming is pretty simple. Nobody delivers a simple mid-tempo 4/4 beat with as much feeling, IMHO. Cliff Williams is good and audible, which is nice. The guitar tones are kicking. Rick Rubin's production is excellent, better than the last couple studio albums prior to this one, I'd say.

On the down side, Brian Johnson's voice sounds pretty shot. It actually sounds better on "Stiff Upper Lip" and I think it sounds pretty blown there too. His style of singing is just too physical not to take a toll. And it has. On the few tracks he sings in a lower register, it's still a great voice. And, to be fair, he makes it through every track ok. Another down side is that this album features writing only by the Young brothers, lyrics included. I find this a little constraining, and on some tunes (i.e. "Burnin' Alive" and "The Furor") the lyrics just seem weird for AC/DC. Lastly, there are just fewer stand out tracks. The album is never awful, but the true high points are somewhat rare.

In conclusion, it's hardly an embarrassment to their career. But every band must have a "worst" album and I believe this is theirs.

Still Rocking, Not Selling Out.......2006-09-20

AC/DC continues to be a solid hard rock band despite what other supposed artists are trying to do just to make something that will make a buck. They are who they are regardless of what is going on around them in the world of music.

There are a number of great tracks on here. The title track is among the best known on here along with Hard as a Rock. I'm a fan of The Furor. That's my favorite song on here. Hail Caesar, which I find to be amusing to some degree, had grown on me. Whiskey on the Rocks is a solid offering with a catchy guitar part. I'm not a huge fan of Boogie Man or Caught with Your Pants Down. But Love Bomb, Cover You in Oil, Burnin' Alive, and Honey Roll keep this CD rockin in the middle. Another plus on here is the cover artwork. It is good inside and out.

AC/DC did not die off when most hard rock and metal fizzled out and gave way to alterative and grunge in the early 90's. Hopefully, they will continue to bless the world with hard rock music, the way it should be.

Too many people have short memories. When this album came out in 1995, it had been five years since their previous studio recording, "The Razor's Edge." Albeit, songs like "Thunderstruck," "Moneytalks" and "Shot of Love" make for a tough act to follow (esp. "Moneytalks," which just spills over with Bon Scott-era moxie). However, "Razor's Edge" as a whole was uneven, and has quite a bit of filler in it.

"Ballbreaker," on the other hand, is a true "comeback" CD: It is rock solid, and even the weakest song ("Cover You in Oil") is weak only because of the lyrics. However, I like AC/DC's trend of late of simply repeating the name of the song over and over. So there!

This is a comeback album for another, more important, reason: It marks the return of drummer Phil Rudd, absent for 12 years after the 1983 record, "Flick of the Switch." Rudd's straightforward, no-nonsense drumming was a perfect counterpart to Cliff Williams' rhythmic, "let your fingers do the rocking" bass (thanks, Jack Black, for that line). I always thought that Simon Wright was a bit too much on the Dave Brubeck jazzy side for AC/DC and that Chris Slade just sounded generic. Rudd, on the other hand, had some great chops, and cast the solid mortar for Angus and Malcolm's wall of rock.

The best tunes on this record are "Hard as a Rock," which goes without saying, *is* as hard as a rock. "The Furor": Nice double meaning (its homonym, Fuehrer), "Burning Alive" (nice bit about Bill Clinton: "He came from a little town called Hope; and someday, maybe, it'll go up in smoke"), "Hail Caesar" (listen to Phil's go-go beat drumming, which opens the tune; a lot more solid than Simon Wright on "Two's Up"), and what a way to close the album, with the title track. I love Angus' opening riff, an obvious salute to the classic Ben Vereen song, "On Broadway."

Best guitar solo, "Boogieman," Angus tripping on chordal progressions over Brian Johnson's gravelly Louis Armstrong shtick.

Best throwback song, "Caught With Your Pants Down": The opening riff and trippy rhythm are a deja vu on "Shake A Leg," from "Back in Black."

Altogether, this album rocks, and passes the "loop" test: If you play it over and over again on your CD player, it never gets stale, the way "Fly on the Wall" or "The Razor's Edge" do.
